When I was preparing for this talk,

The sweet anxiety of choice.

選択がもたらす甘美な不安です

In today's times of post-industrial capitalism,

このポスト産業資本主義の時代において

choice, together with individual freedom

選択というものは 個人の自由や

and the idea of self-making,

自ら創り出すべきという考えと相まって

has been elevated to an ideal.

理想にまで持ち上げられました

Now, together with this, we also have a belief

これに加え 私たちは 進歩が永遠に続くと

in endless progress.

信じているところがあります

But the underside of this ideology

しかし このイデオロギーには

has been an increase of anxiety,

マイナス面もあり

feelings of guilt,

不安や罪悪感

feelings of being inadequate,

自分には力が足りないという感覚や

feeling that we are failing in our choices.

選択に失敗しているという感覚を 増幅させています

Sadly, this ideology of individual choice

不幸にも この個人の選択という イデオロギーのために

has prevented us from thinking about social changes.

私たちは社会的な変化について 考えられなくなっています

It appears that this ideology was actually

どうやら このイデオロギーは

very efficient in pacifying us

政治や社会について考える私たちの

as political and social thinkers.

牙を抜くのに非常に有効だったようです

Instead of making social critiques,

we are more and more engaging in self-critique,

sometimes to the point of self-destruction.

Now, how come that ideology of choice

is still so powerful,

even among people who have

not many things to choose among?

How come that even people who are poor

very much still identify with the idea of choice,

the kind of rational idea of choice

合理的とも言える概念を

which we embrace?

かなり身近に感じるのでしょうか

Now, the ideology of choice is very successful

選択のイデオロギーのお蔭で

in opening for us a space to think

私たちは 未来を想像し

about some imagined future.

思いを馳せるように なってしまっています

Let me give you an example.

例を挙げましょう

My friend Manya,

私の友人のマーニャは

when she was a student at university in California,

カリフォルニアの大学時代に

was earning money

自動車ディーラーで働いて

by working for a car dealer.

お金を稼いでいました

Now, Manya, when she encountered

マーニャの典型的な接客術は

the typical customer, would debate with him

客のライフスタイルや

about his lifestyle,

車にいくら使いたいか

how much he wants to spend,

子どもは何人いるか

how many children he has,

車を持つ目的などを

what does he need the car for?

話し合うというものでした

They would usually come to a good conclusion

大抵の場合 客は最終的に

what would be a perfect car.

どの車が最適か絞り込みます

Now, before Manya's customer would go home

マーニャは 客が家に帰って

and think things through,

あれこれ検討する前に

she would say to him,

こう言っておきます

"The car that you are buying now is perfect,

「お客様が今 買おうとされている車は 完璧です

but in a few year's time,

ただ 数年後には

when your kids will be already out of the house,

when you will have a little bit more money,

that other car will be ideal.

But what you are buying now is great."

Now, the majority of Manya's customers

すると翌日 店に戻ってきた

who came back the next day

マーニャの客の大多数は

bought that other car,

「あちらの車」を買いました

the car they did not need,

必要でもなければ

the car that cost far too much money.

うんとお金のかかる車です

Now, Manya became so successful in selling cars

マーニャは車の販売で大成功して

that soon she moved on to selling airplanes.

まもなく航空機の販売に転身しました

And knowing so much about the psychology of people

prepared her well for her current job,

which is that of a psychoanalyst.

Now, why were Manya's customers so irrational?

Manya's success was that she was able

to open in their heads an image

of an idealized future,

理想的な未来を描かせ

an image of themselves

今より成功し 自由の多い

when they are already more successful, freer,

and for them, choosing that other car

was as if they are coming closer to this ideal

まるでその理想に 近づいているような感覚で

in which it was as if Manya already saw them.

Now, we rarely make really totally rational choices.

私たちが完全に理性的な選択をするのは まれです

Choices are influenced by our unconscious,

選択は私たち自身の無意識や

by our community.

周りの人たちに影響されます

We're often choosing

私たちは選択するに当たり

by guessing, what would other people

大抵 他の人が自分の選択を

think about our choice?

どう思うか考えています

Also we are choosing

他の人の選択を見て

by looking at what others are choosing.

選択することもあります

We're also guessing what is socially acceptable choice.

また社会的に容認される選択を 気にしてもいます

Now, because of this, we actually

even after we have already chosen,

選択をし終わった後でさえ

like bought a car,

たとえば車を買った後も

endlessly read reviews about cars,

車のレビューを読み漁るのです

as if we still want to convince ourselves

that we made the right choice.

Now, choices are anxiety-provoking.

選択は不安を誘発します

They are linked to risks, losses.

選択はリスクや損失と関係しています

They are highly unpredictable.

まったく予測不可能です

Now, because of this,

このため人々は

people have now more and more problems

何一つ選べないという問題を

that they are not choosing anything.

ますます抱えるようになっています

Not long ago, I was at a wedding reception,

先日 ある結婚式に出席して

and I met a young, beautiful woman

若くて美しい女性に出会いました

who immediately started telling me about her anxiety over choice.

彼女は会うなり私に選択に関する不安を 打ち明け始めました

She said to me, "I needed one month

「どのドレスにするか

to decide which dress to wear."

決めるのに１ヶ月かかったの」

Then she said, "For weeks I was researching

さらに「今夜泊まるホテルを探すのに

which hotel to stay for this one night.

何週間もかかったわ」

And now, I need to choose a sperm donor."

「今は精子提供者を選ばなくちゃ ならないの」

(Laughter)

I looked at this woman in shock.

"Sperm donor? What's the rush?"

「精子提供者？何を急いでいるの？」

She said, "I'm turning 40 at the end of this year,

and I've been so bad in choosing men in my life."

Now choice, because it's linked to risk,

is anxiety-provoking,

and it was already the famous

Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard

セーレン・キェルケゴールは

who pointed out that anxiety

is linked to the possibility of possibility.

「不安は可能性のための可能性と つながっている」

Now, we think today that we can prevent these risks.

現在の私たちは こうしたリスクを 防ぐことができると考えます

We have endless market analysis,

市場分析はいくらでもあるし

projections of the future earnings.

将来の収益の予測も立ちます

Even with market, which is about chance,

市場というのは危険性や偶然性を

randomness, we think we can predict rationally

はらんでいるものですが それですら私たちは理性を持って

where it's going.

Now, chance is actually becoming very traumatic.

偶然は時に劇的なことを起こします

Last year, my friend Bernard Harcourt

昨年 友人であるシカゴ大学の

at the University of Chicago organized an event,

a conference on the idea of chance.

He and I were together on the panel,

and just before delivering our papers —

we didn't know each other's papers —

we decided to take chance seriously.

So we informed our audience

that what they will just now hear

a mixture of the two papers

which we didn't know what each was writing.

Now, we delivered the conference in such a way.

Bernard read his first paragraph,

in this way towards the end of our papers.

Now, you will be surprised

驚いたことに

that a majority of our audience

聴衆の大多数は

did not think that what they'd just listened to

自分たちが今 聞いた論文が

was a completely random paper.

ごちゃ混ぜだったとは思いませんでした

They couldn't believe that

教授という私たちのような

speaking from the position of authority

権威ある立場の者が

like two professors we were,

真面目に偶然を捉えるなどと

we would take chance seriously.

聴衆は信じられなかったのです

They thought we prepared the papers together

聴衆は私たちが共同で 論文を用意していて

and were just joking that it's random.

デタラメというのは冗談だと思っていました

Now, we live in times with a lot of information,

私たちが暮らす現代は情報のあふれる

big data,

ビッグデータの時代です

a lot of knowledge about the insides of our bodies.

人体に関する知識も たっぷりある時代です

We decoded our genome.

ゲノムも解読しました

We know about our brains more than before.

脳についても 多くのことがわかっています

But surprisingly, people are more and more

しかし驚くべきことに 人々はこうした知識に対し

turning a blind eye in front of this knowledge.

ますます目をつぶるようになってきています

Ignorance and denial are on the rise.

無知と否定が増大しています

Now, in regard to the current economic crisis,

現在の経済危機について

we think that we will just wake up again

私たちが考えているのは こうです

and everything will be the same as before,

ある朝 目覚めたら すべて元どおり

and no political or social changes are needed.

政治的変革も社会的変革も必要なし

In regard to ecological crisis,

生態上の危機についても

we think nothing needs to be done just now,

今は何もしなくていい あるいは―

or others need to act before us.

自分より先に誰かが 行動すると思っています

Or even when ecological crisis already happens,

たとえば福島での大惨事のように

like a catastrophe in Fukushima,

生態上の危機が実際に起きても

often we have people living in the same environment

住む環境を変えない人がいます

with the same amount of information,

同じ量の情報を与えられても

and half of them will be anxious about radiation

半分の人は放射能に不安を抱き

and half of them will ignore it.

半分の人は無視するのです

Now, psychoanalysts know very well

精神分析学者は 人々が意外にも

that people surprisingly don't have

知への情熱を持たず

passion for knowledge

無知への情熱を持っていることを

but passion for ignorance.

よく知っています

Now, what does that mean?

どういうことでしょう

Let's say when we are facing

たとえば

a life-threatening illness,

命に関わる病気に直面しても

a lot of people don't want to know that.

多くの人は そのことを知りたがりません

They'd rather prefer denying the illness,

むしろ病気であることを 否定したがります

which is why it's not so wise to inform them

だから聞かれてもいないのに 本人に伝えるのは

if they don't ask.

まずいというわけです

Surprisingly, research shows that sometimes

驚くべきことに研究によると

people who deny their illness

自分の病気を否定する人は

live longer than those who are rationally choosing

理性的に最良の治療を選ぶ人より

the best treatment.

長生きすることがあります

Now, this ignorance, however,

しかし このような見て見ぬふりは

is not very helpful on the level of the social.

社会ではあまり役に立ちません

When we are ignorant about where we are heading,

私たちがどこへ向かっているのか 知らずにいれば

a lot of social damage can be caused.

多くの社会的損害を引き起こすことに なりかねません

Now, on top of facing ignorance,

見て見ぬふりに加え

we are also facing today

some kind of an obviousness.

Now, it was French philosopher

フランスの哲学者

Louis Althusser who pointed out

that ideology functions in such a way

「イデオロギーは自明性のベールを

that it creates a veil of obviousness.

作り出すという方法で機能している」

Before we do any social critique,

社会批判をする以前に 切実に求められるのは

it is necessary really to lift that veil of obviousness

この自明性のベールを剥がして

and to think through a little bit differently.

別の角度から考え抜くことです

If we go back to this ideology

私たちが大切に思いがちな

of individual, rational choice

個人の合理的な選択のイデオロギーに

we often embrace,

話を戻すなら

it's necessary precisely here

まさに今こそ

to lift this obviousness

この自明性を取り除き

and to think a little bit differently.

考え方を少し変える必要があります

Now for me, a question often is

私はよく疑問に思います

why we still embrace this idea of a self-made man

資本主義が当初から依存してきた 独立独行の精神を

on which capitalism relied from its beginning?

なぜ私たちはいまだに 大事にしているのでしょう

Why do we think that we are really such masters

なぜ私たちは自分の人生を巧みに操り

of our lives that we can rationally

理性を持って理想的な最高の選択をし

make the best ideal choices,

損失やリスクには巻き込まれないと

that we don't accept losses and risks?

思ってしまうのでしょう

And for me, it's very shocking to see sometimes very poor people,

私が非常に衝撃的だと思うのは

for example, not supporting the idea

たとえば非常に貧しい人々が

of the rich being taxed more.

お金持ちへの増税案を 支持していないことです

Quite often here they still identify

多くの場合 彼らは自分の身に

with a certain kind of a lottery mentality.

Okay, maybe they don't think that they will make it

in the future, but maybe they think,

my son might become the next Bill Gates.

And who would want to tax one's son?

Or, a question for me is also,

why would people who have no health insurance

not embrace universal healthcare?

国民皆保険制度を支持しないのでしょうか

Sometimes they don't embrace it,

支持しない理由として

again identifying with the idea of choice,

選択の話を持ち出す人もいますが

but they have nothing to choose from.

彼らに選択肢などないのです

Now, Margaret Thatcher famously said

マーガレット・サッチャーは ご存じのとおり こう言いました

that there is nothing like a society.

「社会などというものは存在しない」

Society doesn't exist, it is only individuals

存在するのは社会ではなく

and their families.

個人とその家族だけなのです

Sadly, this ideology still functions very well,

悲しいことに このイデオロギーは いまだに非常によく機能しており

which is why people who are poor might feel

貧乏人が自らの貧困を

ashamed for their poverty.

恥じる理由となっています

We might endlessly feel guilty that we are

私たちは正しい選択をせず その結果

not making the right choices,

成功しなかったという思い込みを持ち

and that's why we didn't succeed.

ずっと罪悪感を抱えていくのでしょう

We are anxious that we are not good enough.

私たちは自分の力不足に不安を覚えます

That's why we work very hard,

だから懸命に働き

long hours at the workplace

長時間を職場で過ごし

and equally long hours on remaking ourselves.

また長時間かけて自己改革をします

Now, when we are anxious over choices,

選択に不安を持つと

sometimes we easily give our power of choice away.

私たちは選択する力を あっさり放棄してしまうことがあります

We identify with the guru

何をすべきか指示してくれる―

who tells us what to do,

権威ある者や

self-help therapist,

自己啓発のセラピストに自分を重ねたり

or we embrace a totalitarian leader

選択に関して迷いを見せない

who appears to have no doubts about choices,

訳知り顔の全体主義的な指導者を

who sort of knows.

受け入れたりするのです

Now, often people ask me,

私はよくこんな質問をされます

"What did you learn by studying choice?"

「選択の研究から学んだことは 何ですか？」

And there is an important message that I did learn.

私が学んだ重要なメッセージがあります

When thinking about choices,

選択について考えるようになって

I stopped taking choices too seriously, personally.

私は選択を深刻に そして 個人的なものとして捉えるのをやめました

First, I realized a lot of choice I make

まず私は自分の選択の多くが

is not rational.

It's linked to my unconscious,

my guesses of what others are choosing,

or what is a socially embraced choice.

I also embrace the idea

that we should go beyond

thinking about individual choices,

that it's very important to rethink social choices,

since this ideology of individual choice has pacified us.

個人の選択というイデオロギーによって 私たちは牙を抜かれ

It really prevented us to think about social change.

社会的変化について 考えられなくなってしまいました

We spend so much time choosing things for ourselves

私たちは自分のための選択に 多大な時間を費やし

and barely reflect on

皆のためにできる選択については

communal choices we can make.

ほとんど考えません

Now, we should not forget that choice

選択は常に変化と

is always linked to change.

関連していることを忘れてはなりません

We can make individual changes,

私たちは個人の変化を起こせますが

but we can make social changes.

社会の変化も起こせるのです

We can choose to have more wolves.

オオカミを増やすという選択もできます

We can choose to change our environment

環境に変化を起こし

to have more bees.

ハチを増やすという選択もできます

We can choose to have different rating agencies.

新たな格付け機関を導入するという 選択もできます

We can choose to control corporations

企業に支配されるのではなく

instead of allowing corporations to control us.

私たちが企業を支配するという 選択もできます

We have a possibility to make changes.

私たちは変化を起こす可能性を 持っています

Now, I started with a quote from Samuel Johnson,

さて冒頭にサミュエル・ジョンソンの 言葉を紹介しましたね

who said that when we make choice in life,

「人生において選択をする時

we shouldn't forget to live.

生きることを蔑ろにしてはならない」

Finally, you can see

とうとう私は

I did have a choice

冒頭で使いたかった

to choose one of the three quotes

with which I wanted to start my lecture.

１つを選ぶという選択をしましたよ

such as nations, as people,

国家として 国民として 私たちにも

we have choices too to rethink

将来どんな社会に住みたいか

in what kind of society we want to live in the future.

再考する選択権があるのです
