لە ١٩٩٣ لەدایک بووم لە بەشی باکووری کۆرایای باکوور،

لە شارۆچکەیەک کە ناسراوە بە هایسەن،

I was born in 1993 in the northern part of North Korea,

دایک و باوكێکی خۆشەویستم هەبوو

in a town called Hyesan,

which is on the border with China.

I had loving parents

Before I was even 10 years old,

my father was sent to a labor camp

for engaging in illegal trading.

Now, by "illegal trading" --

he was selling clogs, sugar, rice and later copper

لە ساڵی ٢٠٠٧، خوشکەکەم و من بڕیارماندا هەڵبێن.

to feed us.

خوشکەکەم تەمەنی ١٦ ساڵ بوو،

In 2007, my sister and I decided to escape.

و منیش ١٣ ساڵ بووم.

پێویستە تێبگەم مەبەست لە وشەی" هەڵهاتن" چییە

She was 16 years old,

and I was 13 years old.

لە سنوری کۆریا باکوور.

I need you to understand what the word "escape" means

برسیمان بوو.

و برسییەتی لە کۆریای باکوور واتە مردن.

in the context of North Korea.

We were all starving,

ئەوە تاکە هەڵبژاردنی ئێمە بوو.

and hunger means death in North Korea.

تەنانەت تێنەگەیشتبووم لە چەمکی هەڵاتن،

So it was the only option for us.

بەڵام دەمتوانی ڕووناکییەکانی شەوانی چین ببینم،

I didn't even understand the concept of escape,

و خەیاڵم دەکرد ئەگەر بڕۆمە شوێنی ڕووناکییەکە.

but I could see the lights from China at night,

ڕەنگە بتوانم قاپێک برنج بدۆزمەوە.

and I wondered if I go where the light is,

ئەوە بەوشێوەیە نییە کە پلان و نەخشەی گەورەمان هەبووبێت،

I might be able to find a bowl of rice.

هیچ شتێکمان نەدەزانی چی ڕوودەدات.

It's not like we had a grand plan or maps.

بیهێننە پێش چاوتان کەوا شوقەکەتان ئاگر دەگرێت.

We did not know anything about what was going to happen.

مەبەستم ئەوەیە، چی بدەکەیت؟

لەوی دەمێنیتەوە تا دەسوتێت.

یان دەتەویت لە پەنجەرەکەوە خۆت فرێبدەیت

Imagine your apartment building caught fire.

و بزانیت چی ڕوودەدات؟

I mean, what would you do?

ئێمە ئەوەمان کرد.

Would you stay there to be burned,

ئێمە لەماڵەکە خۆمان فرێدا

or would you jump off out of the window

لەجیاتی سوتانمان لە ئاگردا.

and see what happens?

That's what we did.

کۆریای باکوور باوڕپێنەکراوە.

We jumped out of the house

instead of the fire.

زۆر سەختە بۆ من

کاتێک خەڵک پرسیارم لێدەکەن ژیان لەوێ چۆنە

North Korea is unimaginable.

It's very hard for me

گەر ڕاستگۆبم

دەڵیم:

when people ask me what it feels like to live there.

ناتوانیت تەنانەت خەیاڵیشی بکەیت.

To be honest,

هیچ وشەیەک لە هیچ زامانێک ناتوانێت وەسفی بکات،

I tell you:

you can't even imagine it.

چونکە بەتەواوەتی هەسارەیەکی جیاوازە،

وەک ئەوەی ناتوانی خەیاڵی ئەوە بکەیت کە هەر ئێستا لەسەر هەسارەی مەریخ بژیت.

The words in any language can't describe,

because it's a totally different planet,

بۆ نموونە، وشەی" خۆشەویستی" تەنها یەک مانا دەگەیەنیت:

as you cannot imagine your life on Mars right now.

ئەویش خۆشەویستییە بۆ سەرۆکە ئازیزەکە.

For example, the word "love" has only one meaning:

لە کۆریای باکوور هیچ چەمکێک نییە بۆ خۆشەویستی ڕۆمانسی.

love for the Dear Leader.

و ئەگەر وشەکان نە ناسیت

There's no concept of romantic love in North Korea.

کەوا لە مەبەستی چەمکەکەشی تێناگەیت،

And if you don't know the words,

و لەبەر ئەوە، تەنانەت هەست بەوە ناکەیت کەوا تەنانەت چەمکیش ئەگەرێکە.

that means you don't understand the concept,

با نموونەیەکی دیکەتان بۆ بهێنمەوە.

and therefore, you don't even realize that concept is even a possibility.

گەورەبوون لە کۆریای باکور،

بەڕاستی باوڕمان وابوو کەوا سەرکەردە ئازیزەکەمان خودایەکی بەتواناییە

Let me give you another example.

دەتوانێت بیرکردنەوەکانیشم بخوێنیتەوە.

Growing up in North Korea,

we truly believed that our Dear Leader is an almighty god

تەنانەت لە بیرکردنەوەش دەترسام.

who can even read my thoughts.

پێمان گوترابوو ئەوە برسی دەبیت لە پێناو ئێمە.

و ماندوونەناسانە کارمان بۆدەکات،

I was even afraid to think in North Korea.

و دڵم پی دەسوتا.

We are told that he's starving for us,

کاتێک بۆ کۆریای باشور هەڵاتم.

and he's working tirelessly for us,

خەڵکەکە پێان گوتم کەوا ئەو دیکتاتۆرە،

and my heart just broke for him.

ئۆتۆمبێلی هەبوو

When I escaped to South Korea,

زۆر، زۆرشوێنی خۆشی هەبوو،

و ژیانێکی نایابیشی هەبوو.

people told me that he was actually a dictator,

he had cars,

و دواتر بەبیرمە سەیرکردنی وێنەکەی

many, many resorts,

and he had an ultraluxurious life.

بۆ جاری یەکەم واهەستم دەکرد

کەوا ئەوە گەورەترین پیاوە لە وێنەکەدا.

And then I remember looking at a picture of him,

(پێکەنین)

realizing for the first time

ئەوە کاری تێکردم.

لە کۆتاییدا، زانیم ئەو برسی نەدەبوو.

that he is the largest guy in the picture.

(Laughter)

بەڵام پێشتر ئەوە بوێرییەم نە بوو سەیری بکەم

And it hit me.

Finally, I realized he wasn't starving.

تاوەکو کەسێک پێیگوتم کەوا ئەو قەڵەوە

(پێکەنین)

But I was never able to see that before,

ڕاستیەکەی، کەسێک پێیڕاگەیاندم کەوا ئەوە خەپە بوو.

until someone told me that he was fat.

ئەگەر تا ئێستا ڕاهێنانی بۆچوونی ڕەخنەیت نەکردووە.

(Laughter)

Really, someone had to teach me that he was fat.

ئەوە دەبینیت کە پێتگوتراوە.

If you have never practiced critical thinking,

هەروەها گەورەترین پرسیار خەڵک لێم دەپرسن

then you simply see what you're told to see.

" بۆ چی هیچ شۆرشێک لە ناوخۆی کۆریای باکوور نەبووە؟

گێژن؟

The biggest question also people ask me

بۆ چی لە ماوەی ٧٠ ساڵی ستەم و زوڵمە هیچ شۆرشێک ڕووینەداوە؟"

is: "Why is there no revolution inside North Korea?

Are we dumb?

منیش دەڵێم:

Why is there no revolution for 70 years of this oppression?"

ئەگەر نەزانیت کۆیلەیت،

ئەگەر نەزانیت تۆ جیاکراویتەتەوە یان ستەمت لێدەکرێت،

And I say:

چۆن دەجەنگیت تا ئازدبیت؟

If you don't know you're a slave,

if you don't know you're isolated or oppressed,

مەبەستم، ئەگەر بزانیت جیاکراویتەتەوە،

واتە تۆ دانەبڕاویت.

how do you fight to be free?

نازانیت پێناسەی جیاکراوە چییە،

I mean, if you know you're isolated,

that means you are not isolated.

لەبەر ئەوە هەرگیز نەمزانیبوو

من جیاکرابوومەوە کاتێک لە کۆریای باکووربووم

Not knowing is the true definition of isolation,

بەتەواوەتی پێموابوو من لە ناوەڕاستی گەردوونم.

and that's why I never knew

I was isolated when I was in North Korea.

ئەمە بیرۆکەیەک شایەنی بڵاوکردنەوەیە:

I literally thought I was in the center of the universe.

زۆربەی خەڵک بۆچوونیان وایە

So here is my idea worth spreading:

مرۆڤەکان لە بنچینەوە دەزانن چی ڕاستە و چی هەڵەیە.

جیاوازی لە نێوان دادپەروەری و نا دادپەروەری،

a lot of people think

humans inherently know what is right and wrong,

شایەنی چین و شایەنی چی نین.

the difference between justice and injustice,

منیش پێیان دەڵێم: ئەوە قسەی پرو پوچە.

(پیکەنین)

what we deserve and we don't deserve.

(چەپڵەرێزان)

I tell them: BS.

هەموو شتێک

(Laughter)

(Applause)

دەبێت هەموو شتێک فێربکرێین

بە بەزەییشەوە.

Everything,

ئەگەر ئێستا کەسێک لەسەر شەقامێک بمرێت.

everything must be taught,

including compassion.

هەمووشتێک دەکەم بۆ ڕزگارکردنی.

If I see someone dying on the street right now,

بەڵام کاتێک لە کۆریای باکوور بووم

خەڵکم دەبینی لەسەر شەقامەکان دەمردن.

I will do anything to save that person.

هەستم بەهیچ نەدەکرد.

But when I was in North Korea,

I saw people dying and dead on the streets.

نەک لەبەر ئەوەی من نەخۆشی دروونیم هەیە

بەڵام لەبەر ئەوەی چەمکی بەزەیی فێرنەکرابووم.

I felt nothing.

تەنها، هەستم بە بەزەی، عاتیفە و سۆز لە دڵم دەکرد

Not because I'm a psychopath,

but because I never learned the concept of compassion.

دواتر فێری وشەی" بەزەی" بووم و چەمکەکەشی،

Only, I felt compassion, empathy and sympathy in my heart

و ئێستا هەستیان پێدەکەم.

ئێستا لە وڵاتە یەگرتووەکان دەژیم وەک کەسێکی ئازاد.

after I learned the word "compassion" and the concept,

and I feel them now.

(چەپڵەرێزان)

سوپاس.

Now I live in the United States as a free person.

(چەپڵەڕێزان)

لەم دواییانەدا،

(Applause)

Thank you.

سەرۆکی وڵاتە ئازادەکە، سەرۆک ترەمپ،

لەگەڵ خواوەندەکەی پێشوم کۆبووەوە.

And recently,

the leader of the free country, our President Trump,

و بڕیاریدا مافەکانی مرۆڤ هێندە گرنگ نییە

met with my former god.

تا لە کارناماکانی بیگرێتەوە خۆی،

و سەبارەت بەوە قسەی نەکرد.

And he decided human rights is not important enough

و ئەوە منی ترساند.

to include in his agendas,

ئێستا لە جیهان دەژین

and he did not talk about it.

کە دیکتاتۆرێک دەتوانێت پێیدا هەڵبدرێت بۆ لەسێدارەدانی مامی.

And it scares me.

We live in a world right now

بۆ کوشتنی زربراکەی،

where a dictator can be praised for executing his uncle,

کۆشتنی هەزارەها هاوڵاتی کۆریای باکوور.

ئەوە شایەنی پیاهەڵدانە.

for killing his half brother,

killing thousands of North Koreans.

وای لێ کردم بیر بکەمەوە:

ڕەنگە هەموو پیویستبێت شتێک دەربارەی ئازادی فێربکرێین.

And that was worthy of praise.

And also it made me think:

perhaps we all need to be taught something new about freedom now.

ئازادی ناسکە.

نامەوێت ئاگادارتان بکەمەوە، بەڵام ئەوە ڕاستییەکەیە.

Freedom is fragile.

تەنها سێ نەوەی خایاند

بۆ ئەوەی کۆریای باکوور ببێتە جۆرج ئۆروێڵی "١٩٨٤".

I don't want to alarm you, but it is.

It only took three generations

تەنها سێ نەوەی خایاند.

to make North Korea into George Orwell's "1984."

ئەگەر بۆ مافەکانی مرۆڤ نەجەنگین

It took only three generations.

بۆ ئەوە خەڵکەی ئێستا ستەمیان لێدەکرێت هیچ دەنگێکیان نییە،

If we don't fight for human rights

وەکو ئەو خەڵکە ئازادانەی ئێرە،

کێ لەپێناو ئێمە دەجەنگێت کاتێک ئازاد نەبین؟

for the people who are oppressed right now who don't have a voice,

as free people here,

ئامێرەکان؟ ئاژەڵەکان؟ نازانم.

who will fight for us when we are not free?

پێموایە ئەوە سەرنج ڕاکێشە کەوا گرنگی بە گۆڕانی کەش و هەوا دەدەین،

Machines? Animals? I don't know.

مافەکانی ئاژەڵ، یەکسانی جێندەر.

I think it's wonderful that we care about climate change,

هەموو ئەوە شتانە،

لەڕاستیدا گرنگی بە مافەکانی ئاژەڵ دەدەین،

ئەوە دەگەیەنێت کە دڵمان چەند جوانە،

animal rights, gender equality,

all of these things.

کەوا گرنکی بە کەسانێک بدەین کە ناتوانن قسەکانی خۆیان بکەن

The fact that we care about animals' rights,

that means that's how beautiful our heart is,

و ئێستا خەڵکی کۆریای باکوور ناتوانن قسەکانی خۆیان بکەن

that we care about someone who cannot speak for themselves.

لە جەرخی ٢١ ئینتەرنێتیان نییە.

And North Koreans right now cannot speak for themselves.

و وزەی کارەباشمان نییە،

و ئێستا تاریکترین شوێنە لەسەر زەوی،

They don't have internet in the 21st century.

We don't have electricity,

ئێستا دەمەوێت شتێک بە هاوڕێ کۆریەکانم بڵیم

and it is the darkest place on earth right now.

کە لە تاریکی دەژین.

لەوانەیە باوڕ بەمە نەکەن.

Now I want to say something to my fellow North Koreans

بەڵام دەمەوێت پێیان بڵیم کە ژیانی جێگرەوە ئەستەم نییە.

who are living in that darkness.

ئازادبن.

They might not believe this,

but I want to tell them that an alternative life is possible.

لە ئەزموونی خۆمەوە،

هیچ شتێک ئەستەم نییە.

Be free.

From my experience,

کڕدرام

فرۆشرام وەک کۆیلەیەک

literally anything is possible.

بەڵام ئێستا وا لێرەم،

لەبەر ئەوە بڕوام بە پەرجوو هەیە.

I was bought,

I was sold as a slave.

یەک شت کەوا لە مێژوو فێربووم

But now I'm here,

and that is why I believe in miracles.

لەم جیهانە هیچ شتێک هەتاهەتای نییە.

The one thing that I learned from history

هەموو هۆکارێکمان هەیە تا بە هیوابین.

is that nothing is forever in this world.
