What I learned about freedom after escaping North Korea | Yeonmi Park | TED

I was born in 1993 in the northern part of North Korea,

in a town called Hyesan,

I had loving parents

and one older sister.

Before I was even 10 years old,

my father was sent to a labor camp

Now, by "illegal trading" --

he was selling clogs, sugar, rice and later copper

to feed us.

In 2007, my sister and I decided to escape.

2007年 姉と私は 逃亡を決意しました

She was 16 years old,

姉は16歳 そして 私は13歳でした

and I was 13 years old.

I need you to understand what the word "escape" means

北朝鮮で「逃亡」という言葉が 何を意味するのか

in the context of North Korea.

皆さんに 理解していただく 必要があります

We were all starving,

私達は皆 飢えていました

and hunger means death in North Korea.

北朝鮮では 空腹は死を意味します

So it was the only option for us.

だから 私達には逃亡が 唯一の選択肢だったのです

I didn't even understand the concept of escape,

私は 逃亡の概念すら 理解していませんでしたが

but I could see the lights from China at night,

夜になると 中国の灯りが見えました

and I wondered if I go where the light is,

あの灯りのある場所まで行けば

I might be able to find a bowl of rice.

１杯のご飯に ありつけるかもしれない と思ったのです

It's not like we had a grand plan or maps.

壮大な計画や地図があった という訳ではありません

We did not know anything about what was going to happen.

これから 何が起きるのか 全く分かりませんでした

Imagine your apartment building caught fire.

自分の住むアパートが 火事になったとします

I mean, what would you do?

あなたなら どうしますか？

Would you stay there to be burned,

そこにいて 焼け死ぬか それとも

or would you jump off out of the window

窓から飛び出してみる方に

and see what happens?

賭けてみますか？

That's what we did.

私達は後者を選びました

We jumped out of the house

「火事」からではなく

instead of the fire.

「家」から外に飛び出したのです

North Korea is unimaginable.

北朝鮮は 想像を絶するような国です

It's very hard for me

そこに住む事がどんなものかと

when people ask me what it feels like to live there.

人に訊かれても 私には 難し過ぎます

To be honest,

正直にお話しします

I tell you:

you can't even imagine it.

皆さんには 想像も出来ません

The words in any language can't describe,

どんな国の言葉を使っても 表現出来ないでしょう

because it's a totally different planet,

そこは全く違う惑星だからです

as you cannot imagine your life on Mars right now.

皆さんが今 火星での生活を 想像出来ないのと同じです

For example, the word "love" has only one meaning:

例えば「愛」という言葉には 一つの意味しかありません

love for the Dear Leader.

親愛なる将軍様への愛です

There's no concept of romantic love in North Korea.

北朝鮮には ロマンチックな 愛の概念などありません

And if you don't know the words,

言葉を知らなければ

that means you don't understand the concept,

その概念を 理解出来ないという事です

and therefore, you don't even realize that concept is even a possibility.

従って その概念が起こりうると 認識すらしないのです

Let me give you another example.

別の例を挙げてみましょう

Growing up in North Korea,

北朝鮮にいた頃

we truly believed that our Dear Leader is an almighty god

将軍様は 私達の考えをも 見通せる全能の神だと

who can even read my thoughts.

心から 信じていました

I was even afraid to think in North Korea.

北朝鮮では 怖くて 考える事自体 出来ませんでした

We are told that he's starving for us,

将軍様は 私達のために お腹をすかし

and he's working tirelessly for us,

私達のために たゆみなく 働いていると教えられ

and my heart just broke for him.

私の心は 将軍様を思って 悲しみにうちひしがれました

When I escaped to South Korea,

韓国へ逃れた時

people told me that he was actually a dictator,

皆から 彼は本当は 独裁者なのだと言われました

he had cars,

車や沢山の保養地を所有し

many, many resorts,

and he had an ultraluxurious life.

超豪勢な生活をしているのだと 聞かされたのです

And then I remember looking at a picture of him,

その後 彼の写真を見た時に

realizing for the first time

彼が写真に写った中で 一番大きな男だと

that he is the largest guy in the picture.

初めて気づいたのを 今でも覚えています

(Laughter)

And it hit me.

私にはショックでした

Finally, I realized he wasn't starving.

ようやく 彼が飢えてなど いなかった事に気づきました

But I was never able to see that before,

しかし 誰かが彼は太っていると 教えてくれるまで

until someone told me that he was fat.

私には それが全く 見えていませんでした

(Laughter)

Really, someone had to teach me that he was fat.

本当に私は 彼が太っている事を 誰かから教わる必要があったのです

If you have never practiced critical thinking,

批判的思考を行った経験がないと

then you simply see what you're told to see.

見るようにと言われた物だけを ただ見るものなのです

The biggest question also people ask me

皆が私に訊いてくる 最大の質問はこれです

is: "Why is there no revolution inside North Korea?

「なぜ北朝鮮国内で 革命が起きないのか？

Are we dumb?

国民は馬鹿なのか？

Why is there no revolution for 70 years of this oppression?"

なぜこの70年もの圧政に対する 革命が 皆無なのか？」

And I say:

私はこう答えます

If you don't know you're a slave,

自分が奴隷だと分からず

if you don't know you're isolated or oppressed,

孤立している事も 抑圧されている事も分からないなら

how do you fight to be free?

自由になるために どうやって闘えるというのか？と

I mean, if you know you're isolated,

つまり 自分が孤立していると 分かっているなら

that means you are not isolated.

それは 孤立していないと いう事なのです

Not knowing is the true definition of isolation,

「知らない」ことこそが 真の孤立の定義なのです

and that's why I never knew

だから 私は北朝鮮にいた時

I was isolated when I was in North Korea.

自分が孤立しているとは 決して思っていませんでした

I literally thought I was in the center of the universe.

自分は 文字通り 世界の中心にいると思っていました

So here is my idea worth spreading:

私の広める価値のあるアイディアを 聞いてください

a lot of people think

多くの人はこう思っています

humans inherently know what is right and wrong,

人間は生まれつき 物の善悪とは何かや

the difference between justice and injustice,

公平と不公平の違い

what we deserve and we don't deserve.

そして 自分に値するものと そうでないものを知っているのだと

I tell them: BS.

私に言わせれば そんなのは嘘です

(Laughter)

Everything,

全てが

everything must be taught,

全てが 教えられなければ なりません

including compassion.

「思いやり」も含めて―

If I see someone dying on the street right now,

たった今 瀕死の誰かを 道端で見かけたら

I will do anything to save that person.

その人を助けるために 私は何でもするでしょう

But when I was in North Korea,

でも北朝鮮にいた頃は

I saw people dying and dead on the streets.

瀕死の人や死人を 道端で見かけても

I felt nothing.

何も感じなかったのです

Not because I'm a psychopath,

私がサイコパスだからではなく

but because I never learned the concept of compassion.

思いやりの概念を学んだ事が なかったからです

Only, I felt compassion, empathy and sympathy in my heart

私は「思いやり」という言葉と その概念を学んでから

after I learned the word "compassion" and the concept,

心の中で思いやりや共感 同情という感情が生まれ

and I feel them now.

今はそれを実感しています

Now I live in the United States as a free person.

現在 私は自由な人間として アメリカで暮らしています

And recently,

そして最近

the leader of the free country, our President Trump,

我が自由の国の指導者 トランプ大統領が

met with my former god.

私がかつて崇めていた神と 会いました

And he decided human rights is not important enough

そして彼は人権を協議事項に 含める重要性はないとして

to include in his agendas,

and he did not talk about it.

その事については 話をしませんでした

And it scares me.

それを知り 私は怖くなりました

We live in a world right now

私達はたった今 一人の独裁者が

where a dictator can be praised for executing his uncle,

叔父を死刑にし

腹違いの兄を殺し

for killing his half brother,

killing thousands of North Koreans.

数多くの北朝鮮の人々を殺す事を 称えられうる世界に生きています

And that was worthy of praise.

それが称賛に価したのです

And also it made me think:

そこで 私は考えました

perhaps we all need to be taught something new about freedom now.

おそらく今 私達は皆 自由について 新たに教わる必要があります

Freedom is fragile.

自由とは 壊れやすいものなのです

I don't want to alarm you, but it is.

不安を煽りたくはありませんが それは真実です

It only took three generations

北朝鮮では たった３世代の間に

to make North Korea into George Orwell's "1984."

ジョージ・オーウェルの『1984』を 現実のものにしてしまったのです

It took only three generations.

たった３世代しか かからなかったのです

If we don't fight for human rights

もし私達が 自由な国民として

for the people who are oppressed right now who don't have a voice,

今まさに抑圧され声を持たない人々の 人権のために闘わないなら

as free people here,

who will fight for us when we are not free?

私達がこの自由を失った時に 誰が闘ってくれるのでしょう？

Machines? Animals? I don't know.

機械？ 動物？ 私には分かりません

I think it's wonderful that we care about climate change,

私達が気候変動、動物の権利 ジェンダー平等といった

animal rights, gender equality,

全ての事柄を気にかけるのは

all of these things.

素晴らしい事だと思います

The fact that we care about animals' rights,

私達が動物の権利について 気にかけるという事実は

that means that's how beautiful our heart is,

私達の心が とても美しい という事であり

that we care about someone who cannot speak for themselves.

自分では話す事の出来ない誰かを 大切にしているという事です

And North Koreans right now cannot speak for themselves.

北朝鮮の人達は今 自分から 話す事が出来ません

They don't have internet in the 21st century.

21世紀になっても インターネットは使えないのです

We don't have electricity,

電気もありませんし

and it is the darkest place on earth right now.

そこは現在 地球上で 最も暗い場所なのです

Now I want to say something to my fellow North Koreans

さてその暗闇に住んでいる 北朝鮮の仲間に向けて

who are living in that darkness.

伝えたい事があります

They might not believe this,

皆 信じてくれないかもしれませんが

but I want to tell them that an alternative life is possible.

私は 彼らにこう言いたい 新たな生活は可能なのだと

Be free.

自由になろう

From my experience,

自分の経験から

literally anything is possible.

文字通り 全ての事は可能なのです

I was bought,

私は身を買われ

I was sold as a slave.

奴隷として売られました

But now I'm here,

しかし 私は今ここにいます

and that is why I believe in miracles.

だからこそ 奇跡を信じているのです

The one thing that I learned from history

私が歴史から学んだの一つの事は

is that nothing is forever in this world.

この世界に 永遠のものなど 何一つないという事です

And that is why we have every reason to be hopeful.

だから 私達には希望を持つ 十分な理由があるのです
