What I learned about freedom after escaping North Korea | Yeonmi Park | TED

I was born in 1993 in the northern part of North Korea,

in a town called Hyesan,

which is on the border with China.

I had loving parents

사랑하는 부모님과

and one older sister.

언니와 함께 살았습니다.

Before I was even 10 years old,

제가 10살이 되기 전에

my father was sent to a labor camp

아버지는 강제 노동 수용소에 끌려가셨습니다.

for engaging in illegal trading.

밀수를 했다는 것이 그 이유였습니다.

Now, by "illegal trading" --

아버지가 "밀수"하신 것은

he was selling clogs, sugar, rice and later copper

나막신, 설탕, 쌀, 그리고 구리였고,

to feed us.

가족을 부양하기 위해서였죠.

In 2007, my sister and I decided to escape.

2007년에 언니와 저는 북한을 탈출하기로 마음먹었습니다.

She was 16 years old,

그 당시 언니는 16살이었고

and I was 13 years old.

저는 13살이었습니다.

I need you to understand what the word "escape" means

북한에서 탈출이라는 의미가

in the context of North Korea.

정확히 무엇을 말하는지 알려드릴게요.

We were all starving,

우리는 정말 굶주린 생활을 했었고

and hunger means death in North Korea.

북한에서 굶주림은 곧 죽음입니다.

So it was the only option for us.

그래서 탈출 밖에 다른 선택이 없었죠.

I didn't even understand the concept of escape,

이 당시 저는 탈출이라는 의미조차 이해하지 못했습니다.

but I could see the lights from China at night,

하지만 밤마다 중국 쪽에서 나오는 불빛들을 볼 수 있었습니다.

and I wondered if I go where the light is,

그 불빛이 나오는 곳으로 가면

I might be able to find a bowl of rice.

밥은 먹을 수 있지 않을까 생각했죠.

It's not like we had a grand plan or maps.

우리에게 장대한 계획이나 지도 같은 건 없었습니다.

We did not know anything about what was going to happen.

앞으로 무슨 일이 일어날지도 전혀 몰랐습니다.

Imagine your apartment building caught fire.

만약 여러분의 아파트에 불이 났다고 생각해 봅시다.

I mean, what would you do?

무엇을 하실 건가요?

Would you stay there to be burned,

불타 죽을 때까지 거기 계실 건가요?

or would you jump off out of the window

아님 일단 창문 밖으로 뛰어내리고 나서

and see what happens?

무슨 일이 생길지 보실 건가요?

That's what we did.

저희는 후자를 택했습니다.

We jumped out of the house

저희는 뛰어 내렸습니다.

instead of the fire.

불을 피하기 위해서 말이죠.

North Korea is unimaginable.

북한은 상상조차 불가능한 곳입니다.

It's very hard for me

제가 곤란함을 느낄 때가 있는데

when people ask me what it feels like to live there.

사람들이 그 곳의 생활이 어땠는지 물을 때입니다.

To be honest,

솔직하게

I tell you:

말씀드리자면,

you can't even imagine it.

여러분들은 상상할 수조차 없는 곳이죠.

The words in any language can't describe,

세계 어떤 언어의 단어로도 설명할 수 없습니다.

because it's a totally different planet,

왜냐하면 완전히 다른 세상이니까요.

as you cannot imagine your life on Mars right now.

현재 인간이 화성에서 사는 것을 상상할 수 없듯이 말이죠.

For example, the word "love" has only one meaning:

예를 들어, 사랑이라는 단어는 뜻이 하나 밖에 없습니다.

love for the Dear Leader.

친애하는 수령님에 대한 사랑이죠.

There's no concept of romantic love in North Korea.

북한에서는 로맨틱한 사랑이라는 개념 자체가 없습니다.

And if you don't know the words,

그리고 만약 어떤 단어를 모른다는 것은

that means you don't understand the concept,

개념 자체를 이해 못 하는 것입니다.

and therefore, you don't even realize that concept is even a possibility.

결국에는 그 개념의 가능성조차도 상상 못하게 됩니다.

Let me give you another example.

다른 예를 들어 보겠습니다.

Growing up in North Korea,

북한에서 자라면서

we truly believed that our Dear Leader is an almighty god

친애하는 수령님을 전지전능한 신이라 진심으로 믿어 왔었고

who can even read my thoughts.

제 마음도 읽을 수 있는 분이라 생각했습니다.

I was even afraid to think in North Korea.

그래서 북한에 있을 때는 생각하는 것조차 두려워했습니다.

We are told that he's starving for us,

그는 우리를 위해 배를 굶주리며

and he's working tirelessly for us,

쉬지 않고 일하고 있다고 했었습니다.

and my heart just broke for him.

저는 그를 생각하며 마음 아파했습니다.

When I escaped to South Korea,

탈북해서 한국으로 왔을 때

people told me that he was actually a dictator,

사람들은 그가 사실은 독재자라고 얘기했습니다.

he had cars,

자동차 뿐만 아니라

many, many resorts,

수많은 리조트도 소유하고 있으며

and he had an ultraluxurious life.

아주 호화로운 생활을 하고 있다고 했습니다.

And then I remember looking at a picture of him,

그리고 기억나는 것이 그의 사진을 봤을 때입니다.

realizing for the first time

보자마자 처음으로 생각했던 것이

that he is the largest guy in the picture.

아주 덩치가 크다였습니다.

(Laughter)

And it hit me.

그리고 허탈했습니다.

Finally, I realized he wasn't starving.

마침내, 저는 알게 되었습니다. 그는 굶주리고 있지 않았습니다.

But I was never able to see that before,

그러나 사람들이 말해주기 전까지

until someone told me that he was fat.

그가 뚱뚱하다는 것을 몰랐습니다.

Really, someone had to teach me that he was fat.

If you have never practiced critical thinking,

then you simply see what you're told to see.

다른 사람이 말하는 그대로 보게 될 것입니다.

The biggest question also people ask me

그리고 가장 많이 묻는 질문이

is: "Why is there no revolution inside North Korea?

북한에서는 왜 혁명이 일어나지 않는가입니다.

Are we dumb?

바보라서 그런 걸 까요?

Why is there no revolution for 70 years of this oppression?"

70년간 지속된 억압 속에도 왜 한 번도 혁명이 일어나지 않을까요?

And I say:

제 답변은

If you don't know you're a slave,

만약 자신이 노예라는 걸 모른다면

if you don't know you're isolated or oppressed,

만약 자신이 고립되어 있고 억압을 받고 있는 것도 모른다면

how do you fight to be free?

어떻게 자유를 위해 싸울 수 있을까요?

I mean, if you know you're isolated,

자신이 고립된 것을 안다는 것은

that means you are not isolated.

고립되어 있지 않음을 의미합니다.

Not knowing is the true definition of isolation,

알지 못하는 것이 진정한 고립이라고 볼 수 있죠.

and that's why I never knew

저도 북한에 있을 때

I was isolated when I was in North Korea.

고립되었다는 것을 알지 못했습니다.

I literally thought I was in the center of the universe.

정말 우주의 중심에 있는 줄 알았죠.

So here is my idea worth spreading:

퍼뜨릴 만한 가치가 있는 아이디어를 이제부터 얘기해 볼게요.

a lot of people think

많은 사람들이 생각하기를

humans inherently know what is right and wrong,

인간은 본능적으로 옳고 그름을 분별하여

the difference between justice and injustice,

공정함과 불공정함을 차이도 알고

what we deserve and we don't deserve.

무엇을 누릴만한 자격이 있는 것과 없는 것을 안다고 합니다.

I tell them: BS.

말도 안 되는 헛소리예요.

(Laughter)

Everything,

모든 것.

everything must be taught,

모든 것을 가르쳐 줘야 합니다.

including compassion.

연민 같은 감정도 말이죠.

If I see someone dying on the street right now,

만약 누군가가 길에서 죽어 가고 있는 것을 봤을 때

I will do anything to save that person.

그 사람을 구하기 위해 최선을 다할 것입니다.

But when I was in North Korea,

하지만 북한에 있을 때

I saw people dying and dead on the streets.

길에서 죽어가거나 이미 죽은 사람들을 본 적이 있습니다.

I felt nothing.

저는 아무 느낌도 없었어요.

Not because I'm a psychopath,

제가 사이코패스여서가 아니라

but because I never learned the concept of compassion.

한 번도 연민의 개념을 배운 적이 없었으니까요.

Only, I felt compassion, empathy and sympathy in my heart

제 마음에서 연민, 공감, 동정심을 느낄 수 있었던 것은

after I learned the word "compassion" and the concept,

연민에 대한 단어와 개념을 배우고 나서였습니다.

and I feel them now.

이젠 그것을 느낄 수 있어요.

Now I live in the United States as a free person.

저는 현재 미국에서 자유롭게 살고 있습니다.

And recently,

그리고 최근에

the leader of the free country, our President Trump,

자유의 나라의 지도자이신 트럼프 대통령이

met with my former god.

제가 예전에 믿었던 신을 만났습니다.

And he decided human rights is not important enough

그리고 트럼프 대통령은 인권문제가 중요하지 않다고 판단하시고

to include in his agendas,

이번 아젠다에서 제외하셨습니다.

and he did not talk about it.

그 문제에 대해 얘기를 하지 않으셨죠.

And it scares me.

정말 무서웠습니다.

We live in a world right now

지금 우리가 사는 세상은

where a dictator can be praised for executing his uncle,

독재자가 칭송받고 있습니다. 자기 삼촌을 사형시키고

for killing his half brother,

이복형제와 수천만 북한 사람들을 죽였는데도 말이죠.

killing thousands of North Koreans.

And that was worthy of praise.

그리고 칭송받을만 하다고 얘기합니다.

And also it made me think:

그러고 나서 이런 생각이 들었습니다.

perhaps we all need to be taught something new about freedom now.

우리 모두 자유에 대한 새로운 무언가를 배워야 하는 것 입니다.

Freedom is fragile.

자유는 깨지기 쉽습니다.

I don't want to alarm you, but it is.

여러분을 놀라게 하고 싶진 않지만, 사실입니다.

It only took three generations

북한은 단 3세대 만에

to make North Korea into George Orwell's "1984."

조지 오웰의 소설 1984에서 나오는 국가 되었습니다.

It took only three generations.

단 3세대 만에 말이죠.

If we don't fight for human rights

우리가 인권을 위해 싸우지 않는다면

for the people who are oppressed right now who don't have a voice,

지금 현재 숨죽인 채 억압 속에서 살아가는 사람들을 위해서

as free people here,

자유로운 사람으로서 하지 않는다면

who will fight for us when we are not free?

우리가 자유롭지 못할 때 누가 우릴 위해 싸워 줄까요?

Machines? Animals? I don't know.

기계? 동물? 글쎄요.

I think it's wonderful that we care about climate change,

정말 우리가 훌륭하다고 생각하는 것이

animal rights, gender equality,

기후변화, 동물 인권, 성평등

all of these things.

모든걸 신경 쓴다는 사실입니다.

The fact that we care about animals' rights,

우리가 동물 인권을 생각하는 것은

that means that's how beautiful our heart is,

그만큼 따뜻한 마음을 가졌다는 것이고

that we care about someone who cannot speak for themselves.

스스로 목소리를 내기 힘든 사람에게 관심을 기울인다는 뜻입니다.

And North Koreans right now cannot speak for themselves.

지금 북한 사람들은 자신을 위해 목소리를 낼 수 없습니다.

They don't have internet in the 21st century.

21세기 시대에 인터넷도 사용할 수 없죠.

We don't have electricity,

전기도 공급되지 않습니다.

and it is the darkest place on earth right now.

바로 지구상에서 가장 어두운 곳이죠.

Now I want to say something to my fellow North Koreans

지금 그 어두운 곳에서 살아가는 우리 북한 사람들에게

who are living in that darkness.

할 말이 있습니다.

They might not believe this,

그들이 믿을지 모르겠지만

but I want to tell them that an alternative life is possible.

새로운 삶은 가능하다는 것을 말해 주고 싶습니다.

Be free.

자유로워지세요.

From my experience,

제 경험상으로는

literally anything is possible.

말 그대로 그 어떤 것도 가능합니다.

I was bought,

저는 노예로

I was sold as a slave.

인신매매를 당한 적도 있습니다.

But now I'm here,

그러나 저는 지금 여기 있습니다.

and that is why I believe in miracles.

그래서 저는 기적이 있다고 생각합니다.

The one thing that I learned from history

역사를 통해 배운 것이 있다면

is that nothing is forever in this world.

세상에 어떤 것도 영원한 것은 없다는 것 입니다.

And that is why we have every reason to be hopeful.

그렇기에 우리는 충분히 희망을 품어도 된다고 생각합니다.
