کاتی خۆئاما دەکردن بۆ ئەم قسەیە

I was reflecting on my life and trying to figure out

سەیری ژیانمم کردەوە تا بزانم

where exactly was that moment when my journey began.

لە چ کاتێکدا، گەشتەکەم دەستی پێکرد.

A long time passed by, and I simply couldn't figure out

کات زۆر تێپەڕی، و نەمتوانی بزانم

the beginning or the middle or the end of my story.

سەرەتا و ناوەڕاست و کۆتایی چیرۆکەکەم لە کوێدایە.

I always used to think that my beginning

هەمیشە پێموابوو سەرەتاکەم

was one afternoon in my community when my mother had told me

دوای نیوەڕۆیەک بوو، کاتێک دایکم پێی گوتم

that I had escaped three arranged marriages by the time I was two.

کە من لە سێ داواکاری هاوسەرگیری هەڵهاتووم کاتێک دوو ساڵ بووم.

Or one evening when electricity had failed for eight hours in our community,

شەوێک، کاتێک کارەبا بۆ ٨ کاتژمێر لە کۆمەڵگەکەمان بڕا،

and my dad sat, surrounded by all of us,

هەموومان لە دەوری باوکم دانیشتین،

telling us stories of when he was a little kid struggling to go to school

چیرۆکەکانی هەوڵدانی خۆی بۆ بۆ چوونە قوتابخانە دەگێراینەوە

while his father, who was a farmer, wanted him to work in the fields with him.

لەکاتێکدا باوکی، ڕێگری لێدەکرد، و دەیویست لەگەڵ ئەو ببێتە جوتیار.

Or that dark night when I was 16

یاخود ئەو شەوگارە تاریکەی کە ١٦ ساڵ بووم

when three little kids had come to me and they whispered in my ear

کاتێک ٣ منداڵ هاتن و چرپاندیان بە گوێمدا

that my friend was murdered in something called the honor killings.

هاوڕێکەم لەسەر تاوانی شەرەف کوژراوە.

But then I realized that,

دواتر درکم بەوە کرد کە،

as much as I know that these moments have contributed on my journey,

ڕاستە ئەو چرکەساتانە بەشێک بوونە لە گەشتەکەم،

they have influenced my journey

کاریگەرییان هەبووە لەسەر گەشتەکەم

but they have not been the beginning of it,

بەڵام دەستپێکی گەشتەکەم نەبوونە،

but the true beginning of my journey was in front of a mud house

دەستپێکی ڕاستەقینەی گەشتەکەم لەبەردەم خانویەکی قوردا بوو

in upper Sindh of Pakistan,

لە سەروو سەنده لە پاکستان،

where my father held the hand of my 14-year-old mother

کاتێک باوکم دەستی دایکمی بە ١٤ ساڵی گرتبوو

and they decided to walk out of the village

بڕیاریان دابوو لەو گوندە بڕۆن

to go to a town where they could send their kids to school.

بچن بۆ شارۆچکەیەک بتوانن مندالەکانیان بنێرن بۆ قوتابخانە.

In a way, I feel like my life

هەست دەکەم ژیانی من

is kind of a result of some wise choices and decisions they've made.

ئەنجامی ئەو بڕیارە ژیرانەیە کە ئەوان داویانە.

And just like that, another of their decisions

هەر بەو شێوەیەش یەکێک لە بڕیارەکانیان

was to keep me and my siblings connected to our roots.

هێشتنەوەی پەیوەندی من و خوشک و براکانم بوو بە بنەماڵەکەمانەوە.

While we were living in a community I fondly remember as called Ribabad,

لەکاتێکدا ئێمە لە کۆمەلگەیەک دەژیاین بە حەزەوە بیرمە کە پێی دەوترێ (ڕابابێد)،

which means community of the poor,

واتە کۆمەڵگەی هەژار،

my dad made sure that we also had a house in our rural homeland.

باوکم خانویەکی بۆ دابین کردین لە دەرەوەی شار.

I come from an indigenous tribe in the mountains of Balochistan

من لە هۆزێکی ڕەسەنەوە هاتووم لە چیاکانی بەلۆچستان

called Brahui.

بە براهوی ناودەبرا.

Brahui, or Brohi, means mountain dweller, and it is also my language.

براهوی یاخود برۆهی، واتە شاخەوانی، و هەروەها زمانی منە.

Thanks to my father's very strict rules about connecting to our customs,

سوپاس بۆ یاساکانی باوکم دەربارەی پەیوەندی کردن بە گومرگەکانمانەوە،

I had to live a beautiful life of songs, cultures, traditions, stories, mountains,

دەبوایە لە ژیانێکی جوانی بژیم پڕ لە گۆرانی، کلتور، نەریت، چیرۆک، چیا،

and a lot of sheep.

و مەڕی زۆر.

But then, living in two extremes

بەڵام دواتر، ژیان لە ناو ئەو دوو جیاوازییەدا

between the traditions of my culture, of my village,

لە نێوان دابونەریتی کلتورەکەم و گوندەکەم،

and then modern education in my school wasn't easy.

و خوێندنی مۆدێرنی قوتابخانەکەم ئاسان نەبوو.

I was aware that I was the only girl who got to have such freedom,

ئاگاداری ئەوە بووم کە تەنها کچم هێندە ئازادی هەبووبێت،

and I was guilty of it.

و من هەستم به‌ تاوانباری دەکرد..

While going to school in Karachi and Hyderabad,

کاتی چوون بۆ قوتابخانە لە کاراچی و حەیدەرئاباد،

a lot of my cousins and childhood friends were getting married off,

زۆربەی پورزا و خاڵۆزا و هاوڕێکانی منداڵیم بە شوو دەدران،

some to older men, some in exchange,

هەندێکیان بە پیاوی بەتەمەنتر، هەندێکیان بە ژن بە ژنی،

some even as second wives.

هەندێکیان بە ژنی دووەم.

I got to see the beautiful tradition and its magic fade in front of me

بینیم سیحری ئەو کلتورە جوانە لەبەرچاوم کاڵ دەبێتەوە

when I saw that the birth of a girl child was celebrated with sadness,

کاتێک بینیم لە دایکبوونی منداڵێکی کچ بە خەمبارییەوە پێشوازی لێ دەکرا،

when women were told to have patience as their main virtue.

کاتێک بە ژنان دەگوترا ئارامی و سەلاری گرنگترین ئەخلاقیانە.

Up until I was 16,

تا بووم بە ١٦ ساڵ،

I healed my sadness by crying,

خەمەکانم بە گریان چارەدەکرد،

mostly at nights when everyone would sleep

بەتایبەتی شەوان کاتێک هەموان دەخەوتن

and I would sob in my pillow,

هەنسکم هەڵدەڕشت بەسەر سەرینەکەمدا،

until that one night when I found out my friend was killed

تا ئەو شەوەی زانیم هاوڕێکەم

in the name of honor.

لە ژێر ناوی شەرەفەوە کوژراوە.

Honor killings is a custom

کوشتن بە تاوانی شەرەف دیاردەیە

where men and women are suspected of having relationships

کاتێک گومان لە ژن و پیاوێک دەکرێت بە هەموونی پەیوەندییەک

before or outside of the marriage,

پێش یاخود لە دەرەوەی هاوسەرگیری،

and they're killed by their family for it.

لەبەر ئەوە لەلایەن خیزانەکانیانەوە دەکوژرێن.

Usually the killer is the brother or father or the uncle in the family.

هەمیشە بکوژەکە، برا، باوک یاخود مامە لە خێزانەکەدا.

The U.N. reports there are about 1,000 honor murders every year in Pakistan,

UN ڕایگەیاند ساڵی ١،٠٠٠ کوشتن بە ناوی شەرەفەوە لە پاکستان ڕوودەدات،

and these are only the reported cases.

ئەمانە تەنها ئەو کەیسانە کە کراون بە ڕاپۆرت.

A custom that kills did not make any sense to me,

ئەو کلتورەی کە بڕوای بە کوشتن هەیە هیچ مانایەکی نییە لای من،

and I knew I had to do something about it this time.

زانیم ئەمجارە دەبێت شتێک بکەم.

I was not going to cry myself to sleep.

چیتر تا کاتی خەو ناگریم.

I was going to do something, anything, to stop it.

هەرچیم لەدەست بێت دەیکەم، بۆ وەستاندنی ئەم دیاردەیە،

I was 16 -- I started writing poetry

١٦ ساڵ بووم -- دەستم کرد بە نوسینی هۆنراوە

and going door to door telling everybody about honor killings

دەرگە بە دەرگە دەگەڕام باسی کوشتنم بۆ دەکردن بە ناوی شەرەفەوە

and why it happens, why it should be stopped,

و بۆچی ڕوودەدات، بۆ دەبێت بوەستێنرێت،

and raising awareness about it

هۆشیاریم لەبارەیەوە بڵاو دەکردەوە

until I actually found a much, much better way to handle this issue.

تا ئەو کاتەی ڕێگەیەکی زۆر باشترم دۆزییەوە بۆ کارکردن لەم کێشەیەدا.

In those days, we were living in a very small, one-roomed house in Karachi.

لەو ڕۆژانەدا لە یەک ژووری بچووکدا لە کاراچی دەژیاین.

Every year, during the monsoon seasons, our house would flood up with water --

هەموو ساڵێک، لە وەرزە باراناوییەکان خانووەکەمان ئاوی لێ ئەڕژا --

rainwater and sewage --

ئاوی باران و ئاوەڕۆکان --

and my mom and dad would be taking the water out.

دایکم و باوکم ئاویان دەکردە دەرەوە.

In those days, my dad brought home a huge machine, a computer.

لەو ڕۆژانەدا، باوکم کۆمپیوتەرێکی زۆر گەورەی هێنایەوە،

It was so big it looked as if it was going to take up half of the only room we had,

هێندە گەورەبوو، لەوە دەچوو نیوەی ژورەکەمان بگرێت،

and had so many pieces and wires that needed to be connected.

چەندین وایەر و بەشی هەبوو دەبوو پێکەوە ببەسترێن.

But it was still the most exciting thing

لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا ئەوە خۆشترین شت بوو

that has ever happened to me and my sisters.

لە ژیانی من و خوشکەکانمدا ڕوویدابێت.

My oldest brother Ali got to be in charge of taking care of the computer,

عه‌لی برا گەورەم بوو بە بەرپرسی کۆمپیوتەرەکە،

and all of us were given 10 to 15 minutes every day to use it.

هەر یەکەمان ڕۆژی ١٠ بۆ ١٥ خولەکمان بەردەکەوت بەکاری بهێنین.

Being the oldest of eight kids,

کە من لە هەشت منداڵ بەتەمەنترین بووم،

I got to use it the last,

دەبوو دواجار بەکاری بهێنم،

and that was after I had washed the dishes,

ئەویش دوای ئەوەی قاپەکانم دەشۆردن،

cleaned the house, made dinner with my mom,

و ماڵەکەم پاک دەکردەوە و خوانم لەگەڵ دایکم ئامادە دەکرد،

and put blankets on the floor for everyone to sleep,

و جێگەی خەوی هەموویانم ڕادەخست،

and after that, I would run to the computer,

دوای ئەمانە، ڕامدەکرد بۆ کۆمپیوتەرەکە،

connect it to the Internet,

پەیوەستی ئینتەرنێتم دەکرد،

and have pure joy and wonder for 10 to 15 minutes.

١٠ بۆ ١٥ خولەک چێژێکی ڕاستەقینەم وەردەگرت.

In those days, I had discovered a website called Joogle.

ئەو ڕۆژانە، وێبسایتێکم دۆزییەوە ناوی جۆگل بوو

[Google] (Laughter)

In my frantic wish to do something about this custom,

بە ئاواتی شێتانەم بۆ ئەوەی شتێک بکەم دەربارەی ئەم نەریتانە،

I made use of Google and discovered Facebook,

لە بەکارهێنانی گۆگڵەوە فەیسبوکم دۆزییەوە،

a website where people can connect to anyone around the world,

وێبسایتێک کە خەڵک دەتوانن پەیوەندی بە هەموو دونیاوە ببەستن،

and so, from my very tiny, cement-roofed room in Karachi,

لەبەر ئەوە، لە ژوورە زۆر بچوکەکەی، زەوی چەمەنتۆ لە کاراچی،

I connected with people in the U.K., the U.S., Australia and Canada,

پەیوەندیم بە کەسانێکەوە کرد لە ئەمریکا، بەریتانیا، ئوسترالیا، و کەنەدا،

and created a campaign called

و کەمپینێکم ڕاگەیاند بە ناوی

WAKE UP Campaign against Honor Killings.

کەمپینی هۆشیار بەرەوە دژی کوشتن بە بە ناوی شەرەفەوە.

It became enormous in just a few months.

لە چەند مانگێکی کەمدا زۆر گەورە بوو.

I got a lot of support from all around the world.

لە هەموو دونیاوە پاڵپشتیم کرا.

Media was connecting to us.

میدیاکان پەیوەندییان پێوە کردین.

A lot of people were reaching out trying to raise awareness with us.

کەسانێک هاتن و دەیانویست هۆشیاری لەگەڵماندا بلاوبکەنەوە.

It became so big that it went from online to the streets of my hometown,

هێندە گەورە بوو لە ئۆنلاینەوە چووە سەر شەقامەکانی وڵاتەکەم،

where we would do rallies and strikes

کە ئێمە کۆبونەوە و مانگرتنمان ئەنجام دەدا

trying to change the policies in Pakistan for women's support.

دەمانویست سیاسەتی پاکستان بگۆڕین بۆ پاڵپشتیکردنی ژنان.

And while I thought everything was perfect,

لە کاتێکدا پێموابوو هەموو شتەکان باشن،

my team -- which was basically my friends and neighbors at that time --

تیمەکەشم -- کە هاوڕێ و دراوسێکانم بوون --

thought everything was going so well,

پێیان وابوو شتەکان زۆر باش دەڕۆن،

we had no idea a big opposition was coming to us.

نەماندەزانی چ بەرەنگارییەکی گەورە بەرەوڕوومان دێت.

My community stood up against us,

کۆمەڵگەکەم دژی ئێمە هەستان،

saying we were spreading un-Islamic behavior.

گوایە ئێمە مامەڵەی نا-ئیسلامی بڵاودەکەینەوە.

We were challenging centuries-old customs in those communities.

ئێمە چەندین سەدە لە بەرەنگاری دابووین لەو کۆمەڵگە گومرگیانە.

I remember my father receiving anonymous letters

بیرمە باوکم نامەیەکی لە کەسێکی نادیارەوە پێ گەیشت

saying, "Your daughter is spreading Western culture

تێیدا هاتبوو، "کچەکەت کلتوری بیانی

in the honorable societies."

بڵاو دەکاتەوە لە کلتورێکی بەشەرەفدا."

Our car was stoned at one point.

ئوتومبیلەکەمان بەردباران کرا.

One day I went to the office and found our metal signboard

ڕۆژێک چووم بۆ ئۆفیسەکەمان و بینیم بۆردی ئۆفیسەکەمان

wrinkled and broken as if a lot of people had been hitting it with something heavy.

قوپێنراوە و شکێنراوە و وەک ئەوەی چەند کەس پێیاندا کێشابێت.

Things got so bad that I had to hide myself in many ways.

شتەکان زۆر خراپ بوون کە من دەبوو لە زۆر ڕوەوە خۆم بشارمەوە.

I would put up the windows of the car,

جامی ئوتومبیلەکەم بەرز دەکردەوە،

veil my face, not speak while I was in public,

ڕوخسارم داپۆشم، لە شوێنە گشتییەکاندا قسە نەکەم،

but eventually situations got worse when my life was threatened,

لەناکاو شتەکان خراپتربوون کاتێك هەڕەشەی کوشتنم لێکرا،

and I had to leave, back to Karachi, and our actions stopped.

دەبوو بگەڕامایەتەوە بۆ کاراچی چالاکیەکانمان وەستان.

Back in Karachi, as an 18-year-old,

گەڕانەوە بۆ کاراچی، ئەو کات ١٨ ساڵان بووم،

I thought this was the biggest failure of my entire life.

هەستم دەکرد ئەوە گەورەترین شکستی هەموو ژیانمە،

I was devastated.

تێکشکێنرا بووم.

As a teenager, I was blaming myself for everything that happened.

وەک لاوێک، خۆم بە هۆکاری هەموو شتەکان دەزانی.

And it turns out, when we started reflecting,

کاتێک تەماشای شتەکانمان کرد،

we did realize that it was actually me and my team's fault.

بۆمان ڕونبوەوە کە ئەوە هەڵەی من و تیمەکەشم بووە.

There were two big reasons why our campaign had failed big time.

ئەوکات کەمپینەکەمان لەبەر دوو هۆکاری گەورە شکستی هێنا.

One of those, the first reason,

یەکەم هۆکار ئەوە بوو،

is we were standing against core values of people.

ئێمە دژی کرۆکی بەهاکانی خەڵک دەوەستاینەوە.

We were saying no to something that was very important to them,

ئێمە بە شتێکمان دەگوت نەخێر کە لاییان زۆر گرنگ بوو،

challenging their code of honor,

بەرەنگاری بنەمای ئەخلاقیاتی ئەوانمان دەکرد،

and hurting them deeply in the process.

زۆر قوڵ لە ناخەوە ئازارمان دەدان.

And number two, which was very important for me to learn,

هۆکاری دووهەم کە کە زۆر گرنگ بوو بۆم،

and amazing, and surprising for me to learn,

هۆکارێکی تایبەت بوو کە فێری بووم،

was that we were not including the true heroes

ئەوە بوو کە ئێمە بەژداریمان بە پاڵەوانە ڕاستەقینەکان نەدەکرد

who should be fighting for themselves.

کە دەبوو شەڕ بۆ خۆیان بکەن.

The women in the villages had no idea we were fighting for them in the streets.

ژنانی گوندەکان نەیاندەزانی ئێمە لەسەر شەقامەکان شەر بۆ ئەوان دەکەین.

Every time I would go back,

هەر کات دەگەڕامەوە،

I would find my cousins and friends with scarves on their faces,

پورزا و هاوڕێکانمم دەبینی دەموچاویان بریندار ببوو،

and I would ask, "What happened?"

دەمپرسی، "چی ڕویداوە؟"

And they'd be like, "Our husbands beat us."

دەیانگوت، "مێردەکانمان لێیانداوین."

But we are working in the streets for you!

بەڵام ئێمە لەبەر ئێوە لەسەر شەقامەکان بووین!

We are changing the policies.

بەرەنگاری کۆمەڵگە دەبوینەوە.

How is that not impacting their life?

چۆن ئەوە کاریگەری نەبووە لەسەر ژیانی ئه‌وان؟

So then we found out something which was very amazing for us.

دواتر شتێکمان دۆزییەوە کە زۆر گرنگ بوو بۆمان.

The policies of a country

سیاسەتی هەر وڵاتێک

do not necessarily always affect the tribal and rural communities.

مەرج نییە هەمیشە کاریگەری لەسەر کۆمەڵگەی خێڵەکی و لادێیەکان هەبێت.

It was devastating -- like, oh, we can't actually do something about this?

وێرانکەر بوو، وەک، ناتوانین شتێک بکەین دەربارەی ئەمە؟

And we found out there's a huge gap

و زانیمان کە بۆشاییەکی گەورە هەیە

when it comes to official policies and the real truth on the ground.

کاتێک دێتە سەر سیاسەتی فەرمی و ڕاستی و دروستی لەسەر زەوی.

So this time, we were like, we are going to do something different.

ئەمجارە، بڕیارمان دا شتێکی جیاواز بکەین.

We are going to use strategy,

به‌رنامه‌ڕێژیی بەکار دێنین،

and we are going to go back and apologize.

دەگەڕێینەوە و داوای لێبوردن دەکەین.

Yes, apologize.

بەڵێ، داوای لێبوردن.

We went back to the communities

گەراینەوە بۆ لای کۆمەڵگەکەمان

and we said we are very ashamed of what we did.

گوتمان ئێمە شەرمەزارین بۆ ئەوەی کردمان.

We are here to apologize, and in fact, we are here to make it up to you.

ئێمە لێرەین تا داوای لێبوردن بکەین و بریارەکە بخەینە دەستی ئێوەوە.

How do we do that?

چۆن ئەوە بکەین؟

We are going to promote three of your main cultures.

ئێمە بۆ سێ لە کلتورە سەرەکیەکانتان بەرەو پێش چووین..

We know that it's music, language, and embroidery.

دەزانین ئەوە مۆسیقا، زمان و کاری دەستین.

Nobody believed us.

کەس بڕوای پێنەکردین.

Nobody wanted to work with us.

کەس نەیویست کارمان لەگەڵ بکات.

It took a lot of convincing and discussions with these communities

قەناعەت و گفتوگۆیه‌كی زۆری خایاند لەگەڵ ئەم کۆمەڵگەیانەدا

until they agreed that we are going to promote their language

تا ئەو کاتەی قایل بوون بەوەی ئێمە پەرە بە زمانەکەیان دەدەین

by making a booklet of their stories, fables and old tales in the tribe,

بەوەی چیرۆک و داستان و حیکایەتی خێڵەکان لە کتێبدا کۆبکەینەوە،

and we would promote their music

پەرە بە مۆسیقاکەیان دەدەین

by making a CD of the songs from the tribe, and some drumbeating.

بە دروستکردنی سیدییەک لە گۆرانییەکان لە هۆزەکە، و هەندێک لێدانی تەپڵ.

And the third, which was my favorite,

سێهەم، کە دڵخوازترینم بوو،

was we would promote their embroidery by making a center in the village

پەرە بە کاری دەستی دەدەین بە کردنەوەی سەنتەرێک لە گوندەکە

where women would come every day to make embroidery.

تا ڕۆژانە ژنان بێن و کاری دەستی بکەن.

And so it began.

بەم جۆرە دەستی پێکرد.

We worked with one village, and we started our first center.

بە گوندێک دەستمان پێکرد یەکەم سەنتەری خۆمانمان کردەوە.

It was a beautiful day.

ڕۆژێکی جوان بوو.

We started the center.

سەنتەرەکە دەست بەکاربوو.

Women were coming to make embroidery,

ژنان دەهاتن بۆ کاری دەستی،

and going through a life-changing process of education,

به‌ پرۆسه‌یه‌كی په‌روه‌رده‌ی ته‌واو گۆراودا تێپه‌ڕین،

learning about their rights, what Islam says about their rights,

فێری مافەکانیان دەبوون، ئیسلام چی دەڵێت لەسەر مافەکانیان،

and enterprise development, how they can create money,

و گەشەپێدانی کۆمپانیا، چۆن دەتوانن پارە دروست بکەن،

and then how they can create money from money,

چۆن دەتوانن پارە لە پارە دروست بکەن،

how they can fight the customs that have been destroying their lives

چۆن بەرەنگاری ئەو کلتورەبن کە ژیانیان وێران کردوون

from so many centuries,

بۆ چەندین سەدەیە،

because in Islam, in reality,

چونکە لە ئیسلامدا، لە ڕاستیدا،

women are supposed to be shoulder to shoulder with men.

دەبوو ژنان یەکسان بن لەگەڵ پیاواندا.

Women have so much status that we have not been hearing,

ژنان زۆر لە بارو دۆخیان ھەیە کە ئێمە نەمانبیستوون،

that they have not been hearing,

کە ئەوان گوێ بیستیان نەبوون،

and we needed to tell them that they need to know

پێویستمان بەوە بوو پێیان بڵێین کە پێویستە بزانن

where their rights are and how to take them by themselves,

کە مافەکانیان لە کوێیە و چۆن بە خۆیان بیانبەن،

because they can do it and we can't.

چونکە ئەوان دەتوانن ئەوە بکەن و ئێمە ناتوانین.

So this was the model which actually came out -- very amazing.

کەواتە ئەمە ئەو مۆدیلە بوو کە لە ڕاستیدا زۆر سەرسوڕهێنەرە.

Through embroidery we were promoting their traditions.

لە ڕێگەی چنینەوە ئێمە نەریتەکانیانمان بەرز ئەکردەوە.

We went into the village. We would mobilize the community.

چوینە ناو گوندەکە کۆمەڵگە کۆدەکەینەوه.

We would make a center inside where 30 women will come

لە ناوەوە سەنتەرێک دروست دەکەین کە ٣٠ ژن دێن

for six months to learn about value addition of traditional embroidery,

بۆ ماوەی شەش مانگ بۆ ئەوەی دەربارەی بەهای لە جۆری چنراو،

enterprise development, life skills and basic education,

گەشەپێدانی کۆمپانیا بەهرەکانی ژیان و پەروەردەی بنەڕەتی،

and about their rights and how to say no to those customs

and how to stand as leaders for themselves and the society.

و چۆن وەک سەرکردە بوەستنەوە بۆ خۆیان و کۆمەڵگە.

After six months, we would connect these women to loans and to markets

دوای شەش مانگ پەیوەندیمان بەیەکەوە دەکرد ئەو ژنانە بۆ قەرزو بۆ بازاڕ

where they can become local entrepreneurs in their communities.

کە دەتوانن ببن بە بازرگانە ناوخۆییەکان لە کۆمەڵگەکانیان.

We soon called this project Sughar.

زوو پەیوەندیمان بەم پرۆژەی سوگهار کرد.

Sughar is a local word used in many, many languages in Pakistan.

سوگهار وشەیەکی ناوخۆییە کە بەکار هاتووە لە چەندین زمان لە پاکستان.

It means skilled and confident women.

واتە ژنی لێھاتوو و بڕوابەخۆ.

I truly believe, to create women leaders, there's only one thing you have to do:

بەڕاستی بڕوام وایە، بۆ دروستکردنی سەرکردەی ژن، تەنها یەک شت هەیە کە پێویستە بیکەیت:

Just let them know that they have what it takes to be a leader.

تەنها پێیان بلێ کە ئەوان چیان پێویستە بۆ ئەوەی ببنە سەرکردە.

These women you see here,

ئەم ژنانەی لێرە دەیانبینیت،

they have strong skills and potential to be leaders.

ئەوان بەهرەی بەهێزیان هەیە و لەوانەیە سەرکردە بن.

All we had to do was remove the barriers that surrounded them,

تەنها ئەوەی پێویست بوو ئێمە بیکەین ئەو بەربەستانەن کە گەمارۆیانداون،

and that's what we decided to do.

ئەوە ئەو شتەیە کە بڕیارمان دا بیکەین.

But then while we were thinking everything was going well,

بەڵام دواتر کاتێک ئێمە بیرمان دەکردەوە هەموو شتێک باش دەڕۆیشتن،

once again everything was fantastic,

جارێکی تر هەموو شتێک زۆر نایاب بوو،

we found our next setback:

ئێمە کێشە سەرەکییەکانی داهاتوومان دۆزیەوە:

A lot of men started seeing the visible changes in their wife.

زۆر پیاو هەستیان بە گۆڕانکارییە دیارەکان لە هاوسەرەکەیان کرد..

She's speaking more, she's making decisions --

ئەو زیاتر قسە دەکات، ئەو بڕیار دەدات --

oh my gosh, she's handling everything in the house.

ئای خوایە، ئەو هەموو شتێکی ماڵەکە.

They stopped them from coming to the centers,

ڕاشیانگرتن لە هاتنیان بۆ ناوەندەکان،

and this time, we were like, okay, time for strategy two.

ئەم جارە، باشە، کاتی به‌رنامه‌ڕێژی دووەمە.

We went to the fashion industry in Pakistan

چوینە سەر پیشەسازی مۆدەکە لە پاکستان

and decided to do research about what happens there.

و بڕیارماندا توێژینەوە بکه‌ین دەربارەی ئەوەی کە لەوێ ڕوو دەدات.

Turns out the fashion industry in Pakistan is very strong and growing day by day,

دەرکەوت کە پیشەسازی مۆدە لە پاکستان زۆر بەهێزە و ڕۆژ بە ڕۆژ گەشە دەکات،

but there is less contribution from the tribal areas

بەڵام کەمتر بەشداری لە ناوچە خێڵەکییەکان

and to the tribal areas, especially women.

بۆ ناوچە خێڵەکیەکان، بەتایبەتی ژنان دەکات.

So we decided to launch our first ever tribal women's very own fashion brand,

بۆیە بڕیارماندا یەکەم جارکە لە ناو ئافرەتانی هۆزەکان دا دەست پێبکەین،

which is now called Nomads.

کە ئێستا پێی دەوترێت نۆماد.

And so women started earning more,

بۆیە ژنان دەستیان کرد بە کۆکردنەوەی زیاتر،

they started contributing more financially to the house,

ئەوان دەستیان کرد بە بەشداری زیاتر لە ڕووی داراییەوە بۆ ماڵەکە،

and men had to think again before saying no to them

پیاوان دەبوایە دووبارە بیر بکەنەوە پێش ئەوەی بەوان بڵێن نەخێر

when they were coming to the centers.

In 2013, we launched our first Sughar Hub instead of a center.

لە ساڵی ٢٠١٣دا، یەکەم جار بە سوگهار هوب دەستمان پێ کرد لەجیاتی سەنتەر.

We partnered with TripAdvisor

ئێمە لەگەڵ تریپ ئەدڤایسەر هاوبەشیمان کرد

and created a cement hall in the middle of a village

و هۆڵێکی چیمەنتۆمان لە ناوەڕاستی گوندێک دروستکرد

and invited so many other organizations to work over there.

چەندین ڕێکخراوی ترمان بانگهێشت کرد کە لەوێ کار بکەن.

We created this platform for the nonprofits

ئێمە ئەم پلاتفۆرمەمان دروست کرد بۆ قازانج نەویستەکان

so they can touch and work on the other issues

بۆ ئەوەی دەست بەکار و دەست لێدان بکەن لەسەر کێشەکانی تر

that Sughar is not working on,

کە سوگهار کاری لەسەر نەکات،

which would be an easy place for them to give trainings,

کە شوێنێکی ئاسان دەبێت بۆ ئەوەی مەشقیان پێ بکەن،

use it as a farmer school, even as a marketplace,

وەک قوتابخانەی جوتیارێک بەکاری بهێنیت، تەنانەت وەک بازاڕێک،

and anything they want to use it for,

هەر شتێک کە دەیانەوێت بەکاری بهێنن،

and they have been doing really amazingly.

و ئەوان زۆر بە سەرسوڕهێنەرانە ئەنجامیان دەدا.

And so far, we have been able to support 900 women

تا ئێستا توانیومانه‌ پشتگیری ٩٠٠ ژن بكەین

in 24 villages around Pakistan.

لە ٢٤ گوندی دەوروبەری پاکستان.

But that's actually not what I want.

My dream is to reach out to one million women in the next 10 years,

and to make sure that happens,

بۆ دڵنیابوون لەوەی کە ئەوە ڕوودەدات،

this year we launched Sughar Foundation in the U.S.

ئەمساڵ ئێمە دەستمان بە دامەزراوەی سوگهار لە ئەمریکا پێ کرد.

It is not just going to fund Sughar but many other organizations in Pakistan

ئەوە تەنها بۆ پاڵپشتی دارایی نییە بەڵام چەندین ڕێکخراوی تر لە پاکستان

to replicate the idea

بۆ دووبارە کردنەوەی بیرۆکەکە

and to find even more innovative ways

و بۆ دۆزینەوەی ڕێگە داهێنەرەکانی تر

to unleash the rural women's potential in Pakistan.

بۆ ئەوەی ژنانی لادێیی لە پاکستان ئازاد بکات.

I mean, this story, in many ways, just seems beyond belief.

It's incredible that someone so young could do achieve this much

how much of the current success depends on you,

the force of this magnetic personality?

How does it scale?

Khalida Brohi: I think my job is to give the inspiration out,

خالیدە برۆهی: پێموایە کارەکەم ئەوەیە کە ئیلهامەکە دەربهێنرێت،

give my dream out.

خەونەکەم دەربکەم.

I can't teach how to do it, because there are so many different ways.

ناتوانم فێرتان بکەم چۆن ئەو کارە بکەن، چونکە زۆر ڕێگەی جیاواز هەیە.

We have been experimenting with three ways only.

ئێمە تاقیکردنەوەمان تەنها بە سێ ڕێگە كردووە.

There are a hundred different ways to unleash potential in women.

I would just give the inspiration and that's my job.

I will keep doing it. Sughar will still be growing.

We are planning to reach out to two more villages,

and soon I believe we will be scaling out of Pakistan

و بەم زووانە باوەڕدەکەم ئێمە لە پاکستان دەچینە دەرەوە

into South Asia and beyond.

بۆ باشووری ئاسیا و زیاتر لەمە.

CA: I love that when you talked about your team in the talk,

سی ئەی: حەزم لەوەیە کاتێک قسەت دەربارەی تیمەکەت لە ئاخاوتنەکە کرد،

I mean, you were all 18 at the time.

مەبەستم ئەوەیە، ئێوە لەو کاتەدا هەمووتان لە ١٨ ساڵ بوون.

What did this team look like?

This was school friends, right?

ئەمە هاوڕێی قوتابخانە بوون، وایە؟

KB: Do people here believe that I'm at an age

ک. ب.: ئایا خەڵکی ئێرە باوەڕ دەکەن کە من لە تەمەنێکم

where I'm supposed to be a grandmother in my village?

کە من دەکرێ من داپیرەیەک بم لە گوندەکەم؟

My mom was married at nine, and I am the oldest woman not married

دایکم لە ٩ ساڵی هاوسەرگیری کرد، ومن بەتەمەنترین ژنم کە هاوسەرگیرم نەکردووە

and not doing anything in my life in my village.

هیچ شتێک ناکه‌م لە ژیانمدا لە گوندەکەم.

CA: Wait, wait, wait, not doing anything?

سی ئەی: بوەستە، بوەستە، بوەستە، هیچ شتێک مەکە؟

KB: No. CA: You're right.

ک. ب: نەخێر. سی ئەی: تۆ ڕاست دەکەیت.

KB: People feel sorry for me, a lot of times.

ک. ب.: خەڵک زۆرجار، بۆ من هەست بە دڵگرانی دەکەن.

CA: But how much time are you spending now actually back in Balochistan?

سی ئەی: بەڵام چەند کات بەسەر دەبەیت ئێستا لە بەلۆچستان گەڕایتەوە؟

KB: I live over there.

ک. ب.: من لەوێ دەژیم.

We live between, still, Karachi and Balochistan.

ئێمە لەنێوان کاراچی و بەلۆچستانین.

My siblings are all going to school.

خوشک و براکانم هەموویان دەچن بۆ قوتابخانە.

I am still the oldest of eight siblings.

من لە خوشک و براکانم لە هەمووان گەورەترم.

CA: But what you're doing is definitely threatening to some people there.

سی ئەی: بەڵام ئەوەی تۆ دەیکەی بەدڵنیاییەوە هەڕەشە لە هەندێک کەس دەکات لەوێ.

How do you handle safety? Do you feel safe?

چۆن سەلامەتی چارەسەر دەکەیت؟ هەست بە سەلامەتی دەکەیت؟

Are there issues there?

ئایا لەوێ کێشەیەک هەیە؟

KB: This question has come to me a lot of times before,

ک. ب.: پێشتر ئەم پرسیارە زۆرجار بۆ من هاتووە،

and I feel like the word "fear" just comes to me and then drops,

هەست دەکەم کە وشەی "ترس" تەنها دێتە لای من و دواتر نامێنێت،

but there is one fear that I have that is different from that.

بەڵام ترسێک هەیە کە من هەمە کە جیاوازە لەگەڵ ئەوە.

The fear is that if I get killed, what would happen to the people

ترس ئەوەیە ئەگەر بکوژرێم، چی بەسەر ئه‌وخەڵکه‌ دا بێت

who love me so much?

که‌ زۆر منیان خۆشدەوێت؟

My mom waits for me till late at night that I should come home.

دایکم تا درەنگانی شەو چاوەڕێم دەکات کە من بگەڕێمەوە ماڵەوە.

My sisters want to learn so much from me,

خوشکەکانم دەیانەوێت زۆر شت لە من فێربن،

and there are many, many girls in my community who want to talk to me

و چەندان كچ لە کۆمەڵگەکەم کە دەیانەوێت قسەم لەگەڵ بکەن

and ask me different things,

پرسیاری شتی جیاوازم لێ بكەن،

and I recently got engaged. (Laughs)

من بەم دواییانە شووم کرد. (پێدەكەنێت)

KB: Escaping arranged marriages, I chose my own husband

across the world in L.A., a really different world.

لە سەرانسەری جیهاندا لە لۆس ئانجلۆس، جیهانێکی زۆر جیاواز.

I had to fight for a whole year. That's totally a different story.

دەبوایە بۆ ماوەی ساڵێکی تەواو شەڕ بکەم. ئەوە چیرۆکێکی جیاوازە.

But I think that's the only thing that I'm afraid of,

بەڵام وابزانم ئەمە تەنها شتە کە لێی دەترسم،

and I don't want my mom to not see anyone when she waits in the night.

CA: So people who want to help you on their way,

they can go on, they can maybe buy some of these clothes

that are actually made, the embroidery is done back in Balochistan?

KB: Yeah.

CA: Or they can get involved in the foundation.

سی ئەی: یان دەتوانن لە دامه‌زراوه‌كه‌ به‌شداربن.

KB: Definitely. We are looking for as many people as we can,

because now that the foundation's in the beginning process,
