just waiting for a bead of sweat

to drop off the face of this person

so they can soak up all that knowledge.

আর তারা তাঁর জ্ঞান নিজেদের মধ্যে শুষে নেবে।

Right now there is also a person

এই মুহূর্তে আছেন আর এক ব্যক্তি

who has an entire audience rapt with attention,

যাঁর সামনে রয়েছেন মনোযোগী দর্শকবৃন্দ,

a person that is weaving a powerful narrative

about a world

that the people who are listening

have never imagined or seen before,

The reality is, the folks I described

They may not even have the degrees

এমন কী, হয়ত তাঁদের কোনো বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়-প্রদত্ত এমন কোনো উপাধিও নেই

to be able to have anything

যাতে আনুষ্ঠানিক ভাবে

to call an education.

বলা যায় যে তাঁদের শিক্ষাগত যোগ্যতা আছে।

And that to me is sad.

আমার কাছে, এটা অত্যন্ত দুঃখের ব্যাপার।

It's sad because the people who I described,

দুঃখ এই জন্য, কারণ এঁরা

they were very disinterested in the learning process,

শিক্ষাগ্রহনের প্রক্রিয়ায় বিশেষ আগ্রহী নন,

want to be effective teachers,

তবু এরা দক্ষ ও কার্যকরী শিক্ষক হতে চান,

but they have no models.

I'm going to paraphrase Mark Twain.

Mark Twain says that proper preparation,

টোয়েন বলতেন, সঠিক প্রস্তুতি

or teaching,

অথবা শিক্ষাদান,

is so powerful that it can turn bad morals to good,

it can turn awful practices into powerful ones,

The folks who I described earlier

যাঁদের কথা আমি একটু আগে বলছিলাম,

got proper preparation in teaching,

তাঁরা শিক্ষাদানে যথাযথভাবে তৈরী,

not in any college or university,

তবে কোনো কলেজ বা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রশিক্ষণ কার্যক্রমের মাধ্যমে নয়,

but by virtue of just being in the same spaces of those who engage.

Guess where those places are?

Barber shops,

in the black church.

And I've been framing this idea called Pentecostal pedagogy.

We got a couple of hands.

You go to a black church,

their preacher starts off

and he realizes that he has to engage the audience,

So why does teacher education

with the basic skills, that magic that you need

to engage an audience, to engage a student?

যার দ্বারা শ্রোতাদের অথবা ছাত্রদের আগ্রহ ধরে রাখা যায়?

So I make the argument that we reframe teacher education,

তাই আমার বক্তব্য হল, শিক্ষক প্রশিক্ষণ পাঠক্রমের মূল কাঠামোটির পরিবর্তন করা দরকার,

that we could focus on content, and that's fine,

পাঠ্যসূচীর ওপর বিশেষ গুরুত্ব থাকুক, ক্ষতি নেই,

and we could focus on theories, and that's fine,

but content and theories

with the absence of the magic

of teaching and learning means nothing.

Now people oftentimes say, "Well, magic is just magic."

লোকে বলে, "জাদু তো কেবল ভোজবাজি, আর কিছু নয়।"

There are teachers who,

এমন শিক্ষকও আছেন

despite all their challenges, who have those skills,

যাঁরা বিভিন্ন প্রতিকূলতা সত্ত্বেও তাঁদের এই বিশেষ দক্ষতা নিয়ে

get into those schools and are able to engage an audience,

স্কুলে পড়ান, ও সফল ভাবে ছাত্রদের আগ্রহ ও মনোযোগ ধরে রাখেন।

and the administrator walks by and says,

তাঁদের দেখে প্রশাসনের কর্তারা বলেন

"Wow, he's so good, I wish all my teachers could be that good."

"বাহ! ইনি তো বেশ ভালো পড়ান! স্কুলের বাকি শিক্ষকেরাও তার মত দক্ষ হলে মন্দ হত না।"

And when they try to describe what that is,

যখন এমন শিক্ষকের এই বিশেষ দক্ষতার বিবরণ দিতে অনুরোধ করা হয়,

they just say, "He has that magic."

উত্তর আসে, "উনি জাদু জানেন।"

But I'm here to tell you

কিন্তু আমার বক্তব্য হল,

that magic can be taught.

Now, how do you teach it?

You teach it by allowing people

to go into those spaces

If you want to be an aspiring teacher in urban education,

you've got to leave the confines of that university

তাহলে আপনাকে বের হতে হবে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ক্লাসের গন্ডি ছেড়ে

and go into the hood.

You've got to go in there and hang out at the barbershop,

you've got to attend that black church,

and you've got to view those folks

that have the power to engage

and just take notes on what they do.

At our teacher education classes at my university,

বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে আমার শিক্ষক-প্রশিক্ষণ ক্লাসে

I've started a project where every single student

আমি একটি প্রকল্প শুরু করেছি, যাতে প্রতিটি ছাত্র

that comes in there sits and watches rap concerts.

সেখানে এসে বসে র‍্যাপ কন্সার্ট দেখে।

They watch the way that the rappers move

তারা দেখে র‍্যাপাররা স্টেজে কীভাবে ঘোরেফেরে

and talk with their hands.

কীভাবে তাঁরা তাঁদের অঙ্গ সঞ্চালনের মাধ্যমে কথা বলেন।

They study the way that he walks proudly across that stage.

ছাত্রেরা লক্ষ্য করতে শেখে কীভাবে র‍্যাপাররা স্টেজে সগর্বে হাঁটেন।

They listen to his metaphors and analogies,

তারা শোনে এরা কীভাবে বিভিন্ন রূপক ও অলঙ্করণের দ্বারা সাদৃশ্যের উপস্থাপনা করেন।

and they start learning these little things

এভাবে ছাত্রেরাও শিখতে শুরু করে এই কৌশলগুলি।

that if they practice enough

ক্রমাগত আনুশীলনের ফলে

becomes the key to magic.

এই কৌশলগুলিই জাদুখেলার চাবিকাঠি হয়ে ওঠে।

They learn that if you just stare at a student

তারা বুঝতে শেখে যে একটি ছাত্রের দিকে কেবল স্থির দৃষ্টিতে

and raise your eyebrow about a quarter of an inch,

ভ্রু উঁচিয়ে তাকিয়ে থাকতে পারলে,

you don't have to say a word

because they know that that means that you want more.

And if we could transform teacher education

to focus on teaching teachers

how to create that magic

পারদর্শী করার ওপর গুরুত্ব দিয়ে,

then poof! we could make dead classes come alive,

we could reignite imaginations,

এ ভাবে আমরা পারব সুপ্ত কল্পনাশক্তি আবার জাগ্রত করতে,

and we can change education.
