You know, in a dictionary? (Laughter) Yeah, that's what I thought.

Lexicography: the practice of compiling dictionaries.

Notice -- we're very specific -- that word "compile."

The dictionary is not carved out of a piece of granite,

out of a lump of rock. It's made up of lots of little bits.

It's little discrete --

that's spelled D-I-S-C-R-E-T-E -- bits.

And those bits are words.

Now one of the perks of being a lexicographer --

besides getting to come to TED -- is that you get to say really fun words,

Lexicographical has this great pattern:

it's called a double dactyl. And just by saying double dactyl,

Right? It's a fun word to say,

Now, one of the non-perks of being a lexicographer

is that people don't usually have a kind of warm, fuzzy, snuggly image of the dictionary.

But people think that my job is to let the good words

dictionaries have really not changed.

Our idea of what a dictionary is has not changed since her reign.

Online dictionaries right now are paper thrown up on a screen.

This is flat. Look how many links there are in the actual entry: two!

Right? Those little buttons,

So there's not very much going on here.

There's not a lot of clickiness.

And in fact, online dictionaries replicate

almost all the problems of print, except for searchability.

You know, that ham butt is delicious! There's no reason to throw it away.

The bad words -- see, when people think about a place

How can this be? I mean, I love books. I really love books.

You know, anybody who's read a children's book

Do you know what that says to me?

If we think of the dictionary as being the map of the English language,

والنقاط الغير مضيئة معناها إننا في الظلام .

If that was the map of all the words in American English, we don't know very much.

إذا كانت هذه هي خريطة كل الكلمات في الإنجليزي الأمريكي , فنحن لا نعرف كثيرا عنه .

And we don't even know the shape of the language.

ولا نعرف حتي شكل اللغة .

If this was the dictionary -- if this was the map of American English --

إذا كان هذا القاموس -- إذا كانت هذه الخريطة تمثل الإنجليزي الأمريكي --

look, we have a kind of lumpy idea of Florida,

أنظروا , نحن لا نملك فكرة واضحة المعالم عن فلوريدا ,

but there's no California!

لكن ليس هناك كاليفورنيا !

We're missing California from American English.

نحن نفتقد كاليفورنيا من الإنجليزي الأمريكي .

We just don't know enough, and we don't even know that we're missing California.

We don't even see that there's a gap on the map.

So again, lexicography is not rocket science.

But even if it were, rocket science is being done

by dedicated amateurs these days. You know?

It can't be that hard to find some words!

So, enough scientists in other disciplines

are really asking people to help, and they're doing a good job of it.

because the Internet's full of collectors.

And this is a little-known technological fact about the Internet,

but the Internet is actually made up of words and enthusiasm.

And words and enthusiasm actually happen to be

the recipe for lexicography. Isn't that great?

أساس صناعة المعاجم . أليس ذلك عظيما ؟

So there are a lot of really good word-collecting sites out there right now,

لذلك هناك الكثير من أماكن أو صفحات للكلمات الجيدة على الإنترنت الآن ,

but the problem with some of them is that they're not scientific enough.

لكن المشكلة مع بعضهم هو أنهم ليسوا على مستوي علمي كاف .

They show the word, but they don't show any context.

Where did it come from? Who said it?

What newspaper was it in? What book?

Because a word is like an archaeological artifact.

لأن الكلمة هي بمثابة التحفة التاريخية .

If you don't know the provenance or the source of the artifact,

إذا لم تكن تعرف مكان أو مصدر التحفة ,

it's not science, it's a pretty thing to look at.

إنه ليس علم -- لكنه شيئ جميل للنظر إليه .

So a word without its source is like a cut flower.

لذلك كلمة بدون مصدر مثل وردة مقطوفة .

You know, it's pretty to look at for a while, but then it dies.

It dies too fast.

So, this whole time I've been saying,

is that you really want an excuse to say "synecdochically."

هو إنك حقيقة تريد عذر لتقول ( تعبير مجازي ) .

This whole talk has just been an excuse to get me to the point

هذا الحديث كله الذي تحدثته يعتبر عذر لكي يصل بي إلي الهدف

where I could say "synecdochically" to all of you.

عندما أستطيع أن أقول تعبير مجازي لكم كلكم .

So I'm really sorry. But when you use a part of something --

لذلك فأنا حقيقة آسفة . لكن عندما تستخدمون جزء من شيء آخر --

like the dictionary is a part of the language,

مثل القاموس فهو جزء من اللغة ,

or a flag stands for the United States, it's a symbol of the country --

أو علم يرمز للولايات المتحدة , رمز للدولة --

then you're using it synecdochically.

عندها فأنت تستخدم هذا الرمز ليمثل شيء أكبر .

But the thing is, we could make the dictionary the whole language.

لكن الأمر هنا , نستطيع ان نجعل من القاموس اللغة كلها .

If we get a bigger pan, then we can put all the words in.

لو أننا إستخدمنا حلة كبيرة , عندها نستطيع أن نضع كل الكلمات بها .

We can put in all the meanings.

نستطيع أن نضع كل المعاني بها .

Doesn't everyone want more meaning in their lives?

أليس كل واحد منا يريد معني أعمق لحياته ؟

And we can make the dictionary not just be a symbol of the language --

ونستطيع أن نجعل من القاموس ليس فقط رمز اللغة --

we can make it be the whole language.

نستطيع أن نجعله هو اللغة كلها .

You see, what I'm really hoping for is that my son,

أرأيتم , الذي آمله حقيقة لإبني --

who turns seven this month -- I want him to barely remember

الذي يكمل سبعة سنوات هذا الشهر -- أريده فقط أن يتذكر

that this is the form factor that dictionaries used to come in.

أن هذا هو الشكل التقليدي للمعاجم المستخدمة الذي أتت به .

This is what dictionaries used to look like.

I want him to think of this kind of dictionary as an eight-track tape.

أريده أن يفكر في هذا النوع من القاموس كأنه أداة تسجيل قديمة .

It's a format that died because it wasn't useful enough.

إنه نظام كان يستخدم قديما وإنتهي لأنه لم يكن مفيد بما يكفي .

It wasn't really what people needed.

لم تكن حقيقة ما إحتاجته الناس .

And the thing is, if we can put in all the words,

الشيء هو , لو إننا نستطيع أن نضع كل الكلمات معا .

no longer have that artificial distinction between good and bad,

الاختلافات الجوهرية بين الجيد و السيئ غير متاحة حاليا ,

we can really describe the language like scientists.

نستطيع فعليا أن نصف اللغة مثل العلماء .

We can leave the aesthetic judgments to the writers and the speakers.

نترك الحكم على الجماليات للكتاب و المتحدثين .

If we can do that, then I can spend all my time fishing,

لو إستطعنا عمل ذلك , عندها أستطيع أن أقضي وقتي في الصيد

and I don't have to be a traffic cop anymore.
