It’s another sweltering morning in Memphis, Egypt.

As the sunlight brightens the Nile, Peseshet checks her supplies.

Peseshet is a swnw, or a doctor.

페세샷은 이집트어로 수누 즉, 의사입니다.

In order to become one,

그녀는 의사가 되기 위해 서기 공부를 해야 했고

she had to train as a scribe

and study the medical papyri stored at the Per Ankh, the House of Life.

생명의 집인 페르앙크에 보관돼있던 의학 파피루스를 공부해야 했습니다.

Now, she teaches her own students there.

이제 그녀는 생명의 집에서 자신의 학생들을 가르칩니다.

Before teaching, Peseshet has a patient to see.

페세샷은 수업에 가기 전에 환자를 보러가야 했습니다.

One of the workers at the temple construction site has injured his arm.

사원을 짓던 중 인부 한 명이 팔을 다쳤기 때문이지요.

When Peseshet arrives,

페세샷이 현장에 도착했을 때

the laborer’s arm is clearly broken,

인부의 팔은 완전히 부러져 있었습니다.

and worse, the fracture is a sed, with multiple bone fragments.

심지어 뼈는 산산이 부서진 상태였죠.

Peseshet binds and immobilizes the injury.

페세샷은 환자의 팔을 움직이지 못하게 고정시켰습니다.

Her next stop is the House of Life.

다음으로 가야 할 곳은 생명의 집이었습니다.

On her way, a woman intercepts Peseshet in the street.

그런데 도중에 한 여성이 페세샷의 앞을 가로막습니다.

The woman’s son has been stung by a scorpion.

그녀의 아들이 전갈에게 물렸기 때문이었습니다.

Peseshet has seen many similar stings and knows exactly what to do.

페세샷은 비슷한 사례를 많이 봐왔으며

어떻게 해야 하는지 정확히 알고 있었습니다.

She must say an incantation to cast the poison out.

독을 뽑아내기 위해 먼저 주문을 외워야 했죠.

She begins to recite the spell,

그녀는 주문을 외우며 세르케트를 부릅니다.

invoking Serqet, patron of physicians and goddess of venomous creatures.

바로 의사들의 수호자이자 독을 가진 생물들의 여신이죠.

Peseshet recites the spell as if she is Serqet.

페세샷은 세르케트가 된 것처럼 주문을 외웁니다.

This commanding approach has the greatest chance at success.

이렇게 주문을 외우면 성공 확률이 높아집니다.

After she utters the last line,

주문을 마칠 때쯤

she tries to cut the poison out with a knife for good measure.

그녀는 칼을 이용해 독을 뽑아냅니다.

Peseshet packs up to leave, but the woman has another question.

페세샷은 떠날 채비를 하지만 여성이 이어서 또다시 질문을 합니다.

She wants to find out if she is pregnant.

여성은 자신의 임신 여부를 알고 싶어 합니다.

Peseshet explains her fail-safe pregnancy test:

페세샷은 자신만의 안전한 임신 테스트 방법을 설명합니다.

plant two seeds: one barley, one emmer.

땅에 보리와 에머 밀을 심고

그 위에 매일 소변을 봅니다.

Then, urinate on the seeds every day.

If the plants grow, she’s pregnant.

식물이 자란다면 임신한 것이지요.

A barley seedling predicts a baby boy,

보리가 자란다면 아들이고

while emmer foretells a girl.

에머 밀이 자란다면 딸을 의미합니다.

Peseshet also recommends a prayer to Hathor, goddess of fertility.

페세샷은 다산의 여신 하토르에게 기도하는 것도 잊지 말라고 전합니다.

When Peseshet finally arrives at the House of Life,

페세샷이 드디어 생명에 집에 도착하자

she runs into the doctor-priest Isesi.

의사이자 사제인 이세시와 마주쳤습니다.

She greets Isesi politely, but she thinks priests are very full of themselves.

그녀는 이세시에게 정중하게 인사하지만 속으론 사제들이 오만하다고 생각합니다.

She doesn’t envy Isesi’s role as neru pehut,

이세시의 네루 페후트 직책도 부러움의 대상이 아니죠.

which directly translates to herdsman of the anus to the royal family,

네루 페후트를 직역하면

아누스 왕족의 목자 또는 아누스 왕의 수호자를 의미합니다.

or, guardian of the royal anus.

Inside, the House of Life is bustling as usual with scribes,

생명의 집 안에는 보통

서기와 사제, 의사, 그리고 학생들로 북적입니다.

priests,

doctors,

and students.

Papyri containing all kinds of records, not just medical information,

그리고 의학 정보뿐만 아니라 여러가지가 기록된 파피루스가

are stored here.

이곳에 보관되어 있지요.

페세샷의 아들인 아켓헤텝은 문서의 필사본 제작에 열중합니다.

Peseshet’s son Akhethetep is hard at work copying documents

as part of his training to become a scribe.

서기가 되기 위한 훈련의 일환이죠.

He’s a particularly promising student,

그는 아주 유망한 학생이었지만

but he was admitted to study because Peseshet is a scribe,

이는 페세샷이 서기였기에 가능한 일이었습니다.

as was her father before her.

페세샷의 아버지가 그랬던 것처럼 말이지요.

Without family in the profession,

가족 중에 직업을 가진 사람이 없다면

it’s very difficult for boys, and impossible for girls,

공부를 이어나가는 것은 아들에게는 어려운 일이었고

to pursue this education.

딸에게는 불가능한 일이었습니다.

Peseshet oversees all the female swnws and swnws-in-training in Memphis.

페세샷은 멤피스의 모든 여성 수누와 여성 견습생들을 감독합니다.

The men have their own overseer,

남성 수누는 따로 남성 감독관이 있는데

as the male doctors won’t answer to a woman.

그들이 여성과 이야기 하는 것을 꺼렸기 때문입니다.

오늘 페세샷은 해부학에 대해서 수업하려고 합니다.

Today, Peseshet teaches anatomy.

She quizzes her students on the metu,

그녀는 학생들에게 메투에 관해 질문했습니다.

the body’s vessels that transport blood,

메투는 몸 속의 혈관으로, 피와 공기, 소변

air,

urine,

and even bad spirits.

심지어는 나쁜 영혼까지 운반합니다.

Peseshet is preparing to leave

페세샷이 생명의 집을 막 떠나려던 차에

when a pale, thin woman accosts her at the door and begs to be examined.

안색이 창백하고 야윈 여성이 다가와 검진을 부탁했습니다.

The woman has a huge, sore lump under her arm.

그 여성은 팔 아래쪽에 크게 부어오른 종기가 있었습니다.

Peseshet probes the growth and finds it cool to the touch

페세샷이 종기를 찬찬히 살펴보니 만져도 뜨겁지 않고

and hard like an unripe hemat fruit.

덜 익은 피 과일처럼 딱딱했습니다.

She has read about ailments like this, but never seen one.

비슷한 질병에 대한 글은 많이 봤지만 이런 종기는 처음 보는 것이었죠.

For this tumor there is no treatment, medicine or spell.

이 종기에 대해서는 어떠한 치료법이나 약 또는 주문같은 것도 없었습니다.

All the texts give the same advice: do nothing.

모든 문서에는 같은 조언이 기록되어 있었습니다.

아무것도 하지 말라는 거였죠.

After delivering the bad news, Peseshet goes outside.

여성에게 나쁜 소식을 전한 뒤 페세샷은 밖으로 나갔습니다.

She lingers on the steps of the House of Life,

그녀는 생명의 집 계단에 잠시 서서 황혼에 잠긴 도시를 감상했습니다.

admiring the city at dusk.

In spite of all her hard work,

그녀가 아무리 열심히 노력해도

there will always be patients she can’t help,

도움을 줄 수 없는 환자가 항상 있기 마련입니다.

like the woman with the tumor.

아까 진찰했던 그 여성처럼 말이지요.

They linger with her, but Peseshet has no time to dwell.

이것이 마음에 걸렸지만 그녀는 머뭇거릴 시간이 없었어요.

In a few short weeks,

몇 주 후에

매년 찾아오는 나일 강의 범람이 시작될 것이기 때문이지요.

the Nile’s annual flooding will begin,

bringing life to the soil for the next year’s harvest

나일 강의 범람은 땅에 생명을 불어넣어 이듬해의 수확을 풍성하게 해주며

and a whole new crop of patients.

환자들을 위한 새로운 작물들을 탄생시킬 것입니다.
