The year is 1249 CE.

The French King Louis IX is sailing the Nile,

پاشای فەڕەنسی لویسی نۆیەم گەشت بە ڕوباری نیلدا دەکات،

threatening to overthrow the Egyptian sultan and capture Egypt.

هەڕەشەکردن بۆ لە دەسەڵات لادانی سوڵتانی میسڕ و گرتنی میسڕ.

Egypt’s army commanders ask the sultan’s wife, Shajar Al-Durr,

فەرماندەکانی سوپای میسڕ داوا لە ژنی سوڵتان، شەجەڕ ئەل-دور دەکەن،

to report this news to the sultan, who has been injured in battle.

بۆ ئەوەی ئەم هەواڵە بگەیەنێ بە سوڵتان کە لە شەڕ بریندار بووە.

But they don’t know the truth:

بەڵام ئەوان ڕاستیەکە نازانن:

the sultan is already dead,

سوڵتان پێشتر مردووە،

and Shajar Al-Durr is secretly ruling in his stead.

و شەجەڕ ئەل-دور بە نهێنی فەرمانڕەوایی دەکات لە شوێنی ئەو.

Born around 1220 CE, Shajar Al-Durr, whose name means “tree of pearls,”

شەجەر ئەل-دور کە ناوەکەی مانای“درەختی مرواریە” لە دەروبەری ساڵی١٢٢٠ لەدایک بووە،

was sold into slavery.

بە کۆیلایەتی فرۆشرا.

This was a common fate for Christian children from Turkic countries like her.

Enslaved boys, or mamaleek, were trained to be elite military personnel

serving the Egyptian Sultanate,

As a teenager, Shajar Al-Durr became a concubine

to the son of the Egyptian sultan, As-Salih Ayyub.

کوڕێکیان هەبوو بە ناوی خەلیل، کە مرد لە تەمەنی ساوایی دا،

They had a son named Khalil who died in infancy,

و ئەس-سالح ئەوی ئازاد کرد، تاکو بتوانێت بە فەرمی پەیوەندی خۆشەوویستی لەگەل ببەستێ.

and As-Salih freed her so he could court her formally.

As-Salih became sultan, and he and Shajar Al-Durr married.

ئەس-سالح بووە سوڵتان، و ئەو و شەجەر ئەل-دور هاوسەرگیریان کرد.

When As-Salih died in the middle of the conflict with the crusaders,

کاتێک ئەس-ساڵح مرد لە ناوەڕاستی ئاڵۆزی لەگەل خاچپەرستەکان،

Shajar Al-Durr knew King Louis IX had already succeeded

شەجەڕ ئەل-دور، پاشا لویسی نۆیەمی ناسی کە پێشتر سەرکەوتوو بوو

in conquering important Egyptian port cities.

لە داگیرکردنی شارە بەندەریە گرینگەکانی میسڕ.

Fearing that her husband’s death would threaten the army’s morale,

لەترسی ئەوەی مردنی مێردەکەی هەڕەشە لە ورەی سوپاکەی بکات،

she decided to keep it a secret.

بڕیاری دا ئەوە بە نهێنی بهێڵێتەوە.

To conceal his death, she had food brought to his tent,

and forged his signature on decrees to govern the sultanate

و تزویری ئیمزای لەسەر ئەو بڕیارانە دەکرد کە بۆ بەڕێوەبردنی سەلتەنەتەکە و

and advise military commanders.

رێنوێنیکردنی فەرماندە سەربازیەکان دەریدەکرد.

When the crusaders attacked the Egyptian city of Al-Mansurah,

کاتێک خاچپەرستەکان هێرشیان کردە سەر شاری ئەل- مەنسوڕەی میسر،

Egyptian soldiers ambushed the crusaders and took the French king hostage.

سەربازە میسڕیەکان بۆسەیان بۆ خاچپەرستەکان دانا و پاشای فەڕەنسایان بە بارمتە گرت.

Meanwhile, the truth about the sultan’s death began to leak.

لە هەمانکاتدا، ڕاستی دەربارەی مردنەکەی سوڵتان دەستی بە دزەکردن کرد.

Shajar Al-Durr invited her late husband’s son with another woman

شەجەرئەل-دور بانگێشتی کوڕی مێردەکەیکرد لەگەڵ ئافرەتێکی تر

to claim the title of sultan.

At first, both she and her mamaleek advisers supported

her stepson’s claim to the throne.

But then he began threatening to exile her and kill the mamaleek,

making wild accusations about them.

دروستکردنی تۆمەتی نارەوا دەربارەی ئەوان.

The mamaleek had served Shajar Al-Durr’s husband before her,

مەمالیکەکان پێش شەجەڕ ئەل-دور خزمەتی میردەکەیان کردبوو،

and seen her capable rule so far.

تا ئەوکاتە فەرمانڕەواییە بەهيزەکەی بینیبوو.

They thought she would make a better ruler than the unpredictable prince,

پێیان وابوو ئەو فەرمانڕەواییەکی باشتر دەکات لە شازادە ڕاڕاکە،

and conspired with her to assassinate him.

و پلانیان دانا لەگەڵ شەجەڕ ئەل-دور بۆ کوشتنی ئەو

In May of 1250, with the support of the mamaleek military,

لە مانگی پێنجی ساڵی ١٢٥٠، بە پشگیری سوپای مەمالیک

Shajar Al-Durr was inaugurated as Sultana of Egypt.

شەجەر ئەل-دور وەک سوڵتانی میسڕ دەستبەکاربوو.

Days later, she negotiated the ransom of the French king and his army

ڕۆژانی دواتر، دانوستانی کرد بۆ ئازاد کردنی پاشای فەڕەنسا و سوپاکەی

in exchange for an enormous sum of money

لە بەرامبەر بڕێکی زۆر پارە

and the surrender of the occupied port city.

In spite of her success leading Egypt through this military crisis,

سەرەڕای ئەو سەرکەوتنەی کە میسڕ بەو قەیرانە سەربازیەوە بەڕێوە دەبا،

she had to work to cement her credibility in the eyes of the public.

As a formerly enslaved person,

وەک کەسێکی بە کۆیلەکراوی پێشوو،

her rise to power wasn’t linked to royal ancestry,

بەرزبوونەوەی ئەو بۆ دەسەڵات نەبەسترابۆوە بە خیزانی شاهانە،

while as a woman, societal restrictions prevented her

کاتێک وەک ژنێک، کۆتەکانی کۆمەڵگا ڕێگریان لێکرد

from participating in many of the events a sultan would typically attend.

لە بەژداری کردن لە زۆربەی بۆنەکان کە سوڵتانێک بە شێوەیەکی ئاسایی ئامادە دەبێت.

To increase her visibility and solidify her claim to the throne,

she constructed a public mausoleum for her husband,

Unfortunately, the sultanate’s premier religious authority,

the caliph of Baghdad, still objected to having a woman rule.

Under threat of revolt,

Shajar Al-Durr married on the condition

Her new husband threatened to undermine her rule

by arranging a political marriage between himself and a princess from Mosul.

So Shajar Al-Durr ordered his assassination.

The news reached his first wife,

who successfully plotted to murder the Sultana.

Shajar Al-Durr’s killers threw her body from the Cairo citadel.

بکوژەکانی شەجەر ئەل-دور لاشەکەیان فڕێدایە قەڵای قاهیرە.

Shajar Al-Durr left no personal writings, but her legacy was lasting.

شەجەر ئەل-دور هیچ نوسینێکی کەسی نەهێشتەوە، بەڵام میراتەکەی بێ کۆتا بوو.

Before her death, she built her own mausoleum

پێش مردنەکەی،مەزارگەی بۆ خۆی دروستکرد

with a madrasa, garden, public shower, and palace,

لەگەڵ قوتابخانەیەک، باخچە ، گەرماوی گشتی و کۆشک،

decorated with her signature tree of pearls

نەخشاندی بە ئیمزایەکەی (داری مرواریی)

to remind Egyptians who made it.
