The year is 1249 CE.

The French King Louis IX is sailing the Nile,

ലൂയി IX നൈൽ നദിയിലൂടെ സഞ്ചരിച്ച്‌

threatening to overthrow the Egyptian sultan and capture Egypt.

ഈജിപ്തിനെ പിടിച്ചടക്കുമെന്ന് ഭീഷണിപ്പെടുത്തി.

Egypt’s army commanders ask the sultan’s wife, Shajar Al-Durr,

ഈജിപ്തിലെ സൈന്യാധിപർ സുൽത്താൻറെ ഭാര്യയായ ഷാജർ അൽ-ദുറിനോട്

to report this news to the sultan, who has been injured in battle.

ഈ വിവരം യുദ്ധത്തിൽ മുറിവേറ്റ സുൽത്താനെ അറിയിക്കാൻ പറഞ്ഞു.

But they don’t know the truth:

Born around 1220 CE, Shajar Al-Durr, whose name means “tree of pearls,”

was sold into slavery.

അടിമയായി വിറ്റു.

This was a common fate for Christian children from Turkic countries like her.

Enslaved boys, or mamaleek, were trained to be elite military personnel

serving the Egyptian Sultanate,

while enslaved girls were forced to become concubines.

As a teenager, Shajar Al-Durr became a concubine

to the son of the Egyptian sultan, As-Salih Ayyub.

അസ്-സാലിഹ് അയ്യൂബിൻറെ വെപ്പാട്ടിയായി.

They had a son named Khalil who died in infancy,

and As-Salih freed her so he could court her formally.

As-Salih became sultan, and he and Shajar Al-Durr married.

When As-Salih died in the middle of the conflict with the crusaders,

Shajar Al-Durr knew King Louis IX had already succeeded

Meanwhile, the truth about the sultan’s death began to leak.

Shajar Al-Durr invited her late husband’s son with another woman

to claim the title of sultan.

At first, both she and her mamaleek advisers supported

Days later, she negotiated the ransom of the French king and his army

As a formerly enslaved person,

Under threat of revolt,

Shajar Al-Durr married on the condition

that her new husband must divorce his first wife.

Shajar Al-Durr intended to maintain her status as supreme ruler.

ഷാജർ അൽ-ദുർ പരമാധികാരിയെന്ന സ്ഥാനം നിലനിർത്താൻ ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചിരുന്നു.

Her new husband threatened to undermine her rule

പുതിയ ഭർത്താവ് അവളുടെ ഭരണത്തിന് തുരങ്കം വയ്ക്കാനായി

by arranging a political marriage between himself and a princess from Mosul.

മൊസൂളിലെ രാജകുമാരിയെ വിവാഹം ചെയ്തു.

So Shajar Al-Durr ordered his assassination.

ഇതുകാരണം ഷാജർ അൽ-ദുർ അയാളെ വധിക്കാൻ ഉത്തരവിട്ടു.

The news reached his first wife,

ഈ വിവരമറിഞ്ഞ് അയാളുടെ ആദ്യ ഭാര്യ

who successfully plotted to murder the Sultana.

കൊലപാതകം ആസൂത്രണം ചെയ്ത് സുൽത്താനയെ വധിച്ചു.

Shajar Al-Durr’s killers threw her body from the Cairo citadel.

പിന്നീട് കൊലയാളികൾ അവളുടെ മൃതദേഹം കയ്‌റോയിലെ കോട്ടയിൽ നിന്ന് വലിച്ചെറിഞ്ഞു.

Shajar Al-Durr left no personal writings, but her legacy was lasting.

സ്വന്തം രചനകളൊന്നുമില്ലെങ്കിലും ഷാജർ അൽ-ദൂറിന്റെ പേര് ശാശ്വതമായിരുന്നു.

Before her death, she built her own mausoleum

മരണത്തിന് മുൻപ്, അവൾ സ്വന്തം ശവകുടീരത്തോടൊപ്പം

with a madrasa, garden, public shower, and palace,

മദ്രസയും, പൂന്തോട്ടവും, പൊതുജലധാരയും, കൊട്ടാരവും പണിഞ്ഞു.
