On the dusty roads of a small village,

لە شەقامە قوڕاوییەکانی گوندێکی بچووکدا،

a travelling salesman was having difficulty selling his wares.

He’d recently traversed the region just a few weeks ago,

and most of the villagers had already seen his supply.

Unfortunately, the road was largely deserted,

and the salesman was about to turn back,

لەبەرئەوەش فڕۆشیارەکە بە نیازبوو بگەڕێتەوە،

when he heard a high-pitched yelp coming from the edge of the forest.

هەتا کاتێک گوێی لە دەنگێکی گەورە بوو کە لە دارستانەکەوە دەهات.

Following the screams to their source, he discovered a trapped tanuki.

شوێنی دەنگەکە کەوت ڕاکۆنێکی دۆزیەوە کە بەتەڵەوە بوو بوو.

While these racoon-like creatures were known for their wily ways,

هەرچەندە گیانەوەری وەکو ڕاکۆن بە گیانەوەری بەسوود ناسرابوون،

this one appeared terrified and powerless.

بەڵام ئەمەیان ترسناک و بێ سوود دیار بوو.

The salesman freed the struggling creature,

فڕۆشیارەکە ئەم گیانەوەرە ترساوەی ئازاد کرد،

but before he could tend to its wounds, it bolted into the undergrowth.

بەڵام پێش ئەوەی سەیری برینەکانی بکات خێڕا چووە ژێڕ زەوییەوە.

The next day, he set off on his usual route.

ڕۆژی دواتر، بۆ هەمان ڕێگا ڕێکەوتەوە.

As he trudged along, he spotted a discarded tea kettle.

کاتێک بە ڕێگادا دەڕۆشت، کتریەکی ئاوی فڕێدراوی دۆزیەوە.

It was rusty and old— but perhaps he could sell it to the local monks.

کە کۆن و ژەنگاوی بوو بەڵام لەوانەیە بتوانێت بە قەشەی ناوچەکەی بفڕۆشێت.

The salesman polished it until it sparkled and shone.

فڕۆشیارەکە خاوێنی کردەوە هەتا بریقەدار و درەوشاوەی بوو.

He carried the kettle to Morin-ji Temple and presented it to the solemn monks.

کتریەکەی هەڵگڕت و بەرەو پەرستگای مۆرین جەی ڕێکەوت و پێشکەشی قەشە باشەکەی کرد.

His timing was perfect—

لە کاتێکی گونجاودا چوو بوو

they were in need of a large kettle for an important service,

چونکە ئەوان پێوستیان بە کتریەکی گەورە هەبوو بۆ ڕێوڕەسمەکی تایبەت،

and purchased his pot for a handsome price.

لە بڕی ئەم کتریە پارەیەکی باشیان پێدا.

To open the ceremony, they began to pour cups of tea for each monk—

لەگەڵ دەستپێکی ڕێوڕەسمەکە، ویستیان پەرداخە چیایەک بدەن بە هەریەک لە قەشەکان

but the kettle cooled too quickly.

بەڵام کتریە زۆڕ بەخێڕایی سارد دەبۆوە.

It had to be reheated often throughout the long service,

کە پێویست بەردەوام لەم ڕێوڕەسمەدا دڕێژەدا گەرمی بکەنەوە،

and when it was hot, it seemed to squirm in the pourer’s hand.

کاتەکیش گەرم دەبوو، دەستی بە جووڵە جووڵ دەکرد.

By the end of the ceremony, the monks felt cheated by their purchase,

لە کۆتایی ڕێوڕەسمەکەدا، قەشەکە هەستیکرد کە فێڵیان ڵێکراوە،

and called for the salesman to return and explain himself.

بۆیە داوای لە فڕۆشیارەکە کرد بگەڕێتەوە و ئەوەیان بۆ ڕوونبکاتەوە.

The following morning, the salesman examined the pot,

بۆ ڕۆژی دواتر فڕۆشیارەکە، دەستی بە پشکنینی کتریەکە کرد،

but he couldn’t find anything unusual about it.

بەڵام هیچ شتێکی سەیر و سەمەرەی تێدا نەدۆزیەوە.

Hoping a cup of tea would help them think,

بە هیوایی ئەوەی خواردنەوەی پەرداخە چیایەک یارمەتیان بدات لە بیرکردنەوە،

they set the kettle on the fire.

Within moments, the metal began to sweat.

بۆیە کتریەکەیان خستە سەر ئاگر.

Suddenly, it sprouted a scrubby tail, furry paws and pointed nose.

With a yelp, the salesman recognized the tanuki he’d freed.

The salesman was shocked.

He’d heard tales of shape-shifting tanuki

who transformed by pulling on their testicles.

کە دەتوانن خۆیان بگۆڕن بە ڕاکێشانی ئەندامی زاوێیانەوە.

But they were usually troublesome tricksters,

بەڵام ئەوان هەمیشە فێڵبازی سەر بە کێشە بۆتن،

who played embarrassing pranks on travellers,

کە یاری و فێڵی شەرمەزارکەریان بە گەشتیارەکان دەکرد،

or made it rain money that later dissolved into leaves.

یان پارەیان بەوە کۆدەکردەوە و دواتر لە ژێڕ گەڵاکان دەیان شاردەوە.

Some people even placed tanuki statues outside their homes and businesses

هەندێک خەڵک پەیکەری ڕاکۆن لە دەرەوەی ماڵەکانیان یان شوێنی کارەکانیان دادەنێن

to trick potential pranksters into taking their antics elsewhere.

بۆئەوەی فێڵێکی زۆڕ ناوازە بکەن بە شاردنەوەی کەلوپەلەکانیان.

However, this tanuki only smiled sweetly.

هەرچەندە، ئەم ڕاکۆنە زۆڕ بەجوانی زەردەخەنە دەکات.

Why had he chosen this unsuspecting form?

بۆچی ئەم شێوە شاڕاوەی هەڵبژاردووە؟

The tanuki explained that he wanted to repay the salesman’s kindness.

ڕاکۆنەکە گووتی کە ویستۆتی چاکەی ئەم فڕۆشیارە بەخشندەیە بداتەوە.

However, he’d grown too hot as a tea kettle,

هەرچەندە، وەکو کتریەک زۆڕ گەرم دەبوو،

and didn’t like being burned, scrubbed, or polished.

لەگەڵ ئەوەی حەزی نەدەکرد بسووتێ، خاوێنبکرێتەوە یان سافبکرێت.

The monk and salesman laughed, both impressed by this honourable trickster.

قەشە و فڕۆشیارەکە پێکەنین، هەردووکیان زۆڕ کاریگەر بوو بەم فێڵە ناوازەیە.

From that day on, the tanuki became an esteemed guest of the temple.

لە دوای ئەو ڕۆژەوە، ڕاکۆنەکە بەخێڕهاتنی ڵی دەکرا لەلایەن پەرستگاکەوە.

He could frequently be found telling tales and performing tricks

زۆڕبەی کات چیڕۆکی دەگێڕایەوە و یاری فێڵاوی ئەنجام دەدا

that amused even the most serious monks.

کە بەمەش سەرنجی هەموو قەشەکانی ڕاکێشرا بوو

Villagers came from far away to see the temple tanuki,

گوندنشینەکان لە شوێنی دوورە دەهات بۆ بینی ڕاکۆنەکەی پەرستگا،

and the salesman visited often to share tea made from an entirely normal kettle.

فڕۆشیارەکەش زۆڕکات سەردانی دەکر بۆ خواردنەوەی چایی لەگەڵی.
