On the dusty roads of a small village,

Following the screams to their source, he discovered a trapped tanuki.

While these racoon-like creatures were known for their wily ways,

this one appeared terrified and powerless.

이 녀석은 겁에 질리고 아무 힘도 없어 보였습니다.

The salesman freed the struggling creature,

상인은 발버둥치는 동물을 풀어줬죠.

but before he could tend to its wounds, it bolted into the undergrowth.

상처를 봐주기도 전에 너구리는 쏜살같이 굴로 도망쳤습니다.

The next day, he set off on his usual route.

다음 날, 상인은 항상 가던 길을 나섰습니다.

As he trudged along, he spotted a discarded tea kettle.

터벅거리며 길을 걷던 상인은 못 쓰는 찻주전자를 발견했습니다.

It was rusty and old— but perhaps he could sell it to the local monks.

녹슬고 낡은 주전자였지만, 승려들에게 팔 수 있겠다고 생각해서

The salesman polished it until it sparkled and shone.

주전자를 반짝일 때까지 닦았습니다.

He carried the kettle to Morin-ji Temple and presented it to the solemn monks.

그는 주전자를 모린지 절로 가져가

점잖은 승려들에게 보여줬습니다.

His timing was perfect—

they were in need of a large kettle for an important service,

and purchased his pot for a handsome price.

To open the ceremony, they began to pour cups of tea for each monk—

but the kettle cooled too quickly.

It had to be reheated often throughout the long service,

and when it was hot, it seemed to squirm in the pourer’s hand.

By the end of the ceremony, the monks felt cheated by their purchase,

and called for the salesman to return and explain himself.

The following morning, the salesman examined the pot,

but he couldn’t find anything unusual about it.

Hoping a cup of tea would help them think,

they set the kettle on the fire.

Within moments, the metal began to sweat.

얼마 지나지 않아 쇠에서 땀이 나기 시작했고

Suddenly, it sprouted a scrubby tail, furry paws and pointed nose.

갑자기 주전자에서 수북한 꼬리와 앞발 그리고 뾰족한 코가 자라났습니다.

With a yelp, the salesman recognized the tanuki he’d freed.

소리를 꽥 지른 상인은 그가 풀어줬던 너구리를 알아봤습니다.

The salesman was shocked.

상인은 놀랐습니다.

He’d heard tales of shape-shifting tanuki

변신하는 너구리 얘기를 들은 적이 있는데

who transformed by pulling on their testicles.

음낭을 늘어트려 모습을 바꾸곤 한다죠.

But they were usually troublesome tricksters,

그렇지만 그런 너구리들은 대개 골칫거리 장난꾸러기들로

who played embarrassing pranks on travellers,

당혹스러운 장난으로 여행자들을 놀리거나

or made it rain money that later dissolved into leaves.

나중에 이파리로 바뀔 돈을 뿌렸습니다.

Some people even placed tanuki statues outside their homes and businesses

어떤 사람들은 심지어 너구리 상을 집이나 가게 앞에 세우기도 했죠.

to trick potential pranksters into taking their antics elsewhere.

혹시나 찾아올 그 장난꾸러기들을 속여 다른 곳에서 장난치길 바라면서요.

However, this tanuki only smiled sweetly.

그렇지만, 이 너구리는 그저 귀엽게 미소만 지었습니다.

왜 아무도 의심하지 않을 모습을 고른 걸까요?

Why had he chosen this unsuspecting form?

The tanuki explained that he wanted to repay the salesman’s kindness.

너구리는 상인의 은혜에 보답하고 싶었다고 말했습니다.

However, he’d grown too hot as a tea kettle,

그렇지만, 찻주전자로 변해 너무 뜨거웠고

and didn’t like being burned, scrubbed, or polished.

데거나 문질러지거나 닦이는 게 싫었답니다.

The monk and salesman laughed, both impressed by this honourable trickster.

승려와 상인은 이 정직한 장난꾸러기에게 감명받아 웃었습니다.

From that day on, the tanuki became an esteemed guest of the temple.

그날부터, 너구리는 그 절에서 사랑받는 손님이 되었습니다.

He could frequently be found telling tales and performing tricks

재밌는 이야기를 해 주거나 묘기를 선사하는 모습이 자주 보였죠.

that amused even the most serious monks.

그 모습은 제일 근엄한 승려들까지도 즐겁게 했답니다.

Villagers came from far away to see the temple tanuki,

절의 너구리를 보러 먼 마을에서 오는 사람들도 있었습니다.

and the salesman visited often to share tea made from an entirely normal kettle.

상인은 가끔 너구리에게 들러 평범한 주전자로 만든 차를 나눴답니다.
