A woman in rags emerged from the swamp flanked by seven giant scorpions.

انْبثقت امرأة ُُبحُلّةٍ رثّةٍ من المستنقع محاطةٍ بسبع عقارب ضخمة.

Carrying a baby, she headed for the nearest village to beg for food.

So she continued down the road until she came to a cottage.

The woman there took pity on the stranger and offered her what she could:

تقطن فيه امرأة حيث أَشْفقت عليها وقدّمت لها ما تملكه:

a simple meal and a bed of straw.

وجبة خفيفة وسرير من القَشْ.

Her guest was no ordinary beggar.

لم تكن ضيفتها بالمتسوّلة العادية.

She was Isis, the most powerful goddess in Egypt.

بل كانت آيزيس، أعظم إلهة في مصر.

Isis was in hiding from her brother Set,

كانت آيزيس تختبئ من أخيها سات،

who murdered her husband and wanted to murder her infant son, Horus.

الذي قتل زوجها ويسعى لقتل ابنها الرضيع، هورس.

Set was also a powerful god, and he was looking for them.

كان سات إلاهًا ذو قوة جبّارة أيضًا، ويسعى لإيجادهم.

So to keep her cover, Isis had to be very discreet—

ولكي تتوارى عن الأنظار، اضْطرت آيزيس أنْ تُخفي ماهيتهاـــ

she couldn’t risk using her powers.

But she was not without aid.

Serket, goddess of venomous creatures,

had sent seven of her fiercest servants to guard Isis and her son.

As Isis and Horus settled into their humble accommodation,

the scorpions fumed at how the wealthy woman had offended their divine mistress.

They all combined their venom and gave it to one of the seven, Tefen.

In the dead of night, Tefen crept over to the mansion.

وفي سكون الليل، تسلّلت تيفن إلى القصر.

As he crawled under the door,

عندما حَبَت من أسفل الباب،

he saw the owner’s young son sleeping peacefully

وقعت عيناها على ابن المرأة الأصغر الغارق في نومه

and gave him a mighty sting.

ولسعته بقوة.

Isis and her hostess were soon awakened by loud wailing.

سرعان ما استيقظت آيزيس ومُضيفتها على العويل.

As they peered out of the doorway of the cottage,

عندما نظروا مليًّا من مدخل الكوخ،

they saw a mother running through the street,

شاهدوا أُمًّا تركض في الشارع،

weeping as she cradled her son.

تبكي وهي تحتضن ابنها.

When Isis recognized the woman who had turned her away,

عندما تعرّفت آيزيس على المرأة التي طردتها،

she understood what her scorpions had done.

أدركت ما فعلته عقاربها.

Isis took the boy in her arms and began to recite a powerful spell:

حضنت آيزيس الطفل وباشرت بتلاوة تعويذة قويّة:

"O poison of Tefen, come out of him and fall upon the ground!

يا سُمّ تيفن، اخرج من جسده واسقط على الأرض!

Poison of Befen, advance not, penetrate no farther, come out of him,

سُمّ بفين، لا تتطوّر، لا تتسرّب أعمق، اخرج من جسده،

and fall upon the ground!

واسقط على الأرض!

For I am Isis, the great Enchantress, the Speaker of spells.

لأنّني آيزيس، الساحرة الأعظم، ناطِقة التعويذات.

Fall down, O poison of Mestet! Hasten not, poison of Mestetef!

اسقط على الأرض، يا سُمّ مستيت! لا تعجل، سُمّ مستيتف!

Rise not, poison of Petet and Thetet! Approach not, poison of Matet!"

لا تعلو، سُمّ بتيت وتيتت! لا تصعد، سُمّ ماتيت!"

With each name she invoked, that scorpion’s poison was neutralized.

مع كل اسم استشهدت به، أُبطل مفعول سُمّ العقرب.

The child stirred, and his mother wept with gratitude

دبت في الطفل الروح، وبكت أُمّه امتنانًا

and lamented her earlier callousness,

وتَحَسّرت على غلظة قلبها السابقة،

offering all her wealth to Isis in repentance.

وتابت إلى آيزيس بتقدّيم كامل ثروتها لها.

The woman who had taken Isis in watched in awe—

المرأة التي اعتنت بآيزيس كانت تشعر بالرهبةـــــ

she had had no idea who she’d brought under her roof.

فلم يكن لها أدنى فكرة من كانت تقطن تحت سقفها.

And from that day on,

ومنذ ذلك اليوم،

the people learned to make a poultice to treat scorpion bites,

تعلّم البشر الكِمَادة لعلاج لسعات العقرب،

speaking magical incantations just as the goddess had.
