Martin Villeneuve: How I made an impossible film

I made a film that was impossible to make,

“Mars et Avril” é um filme de ficção científica.

but I didn't know it was impossible,

Passa-se em Montreal daqui a cerca de 50 anos.

and that's how I was able to do it.

Nunca ninguém tinha feito um filme deste género no Québec,

"Mars et Avril" is a science fiction film.

porque é caro, desenrola-se no futuro e tem imensos efeitos visuais,

It's set in Montreal some 50 years in the future.

e é filmado em tela verde.

No one had done that kind of movie in Quebec before

No entanto, era este o tipo de filme que eu queria fazer desde que era criança,

because it's expensive, it's set in the future,

and it's got tons of visual effects,

quando lia bandas desenhadas

and it's shot on green screen.

Yet this is the kind of movie that I wanted to make

ever since I was a kid, really,

back when I was reading some comic books

and dreaming about what the future might be.

When American producers see my film,

they think that I had a big budget to do it,

But in fact I had 10 percent of that budget.

Bem, foram 2 coisas.

I did "Mars et Avril" for only 2.3 million.

A primeira foi o tempo.

Quando não têm dinheiro, devem ter tempo,

So you might wonder, what's the deal here?

How did I do this?

e eu demorei 7 anos a fazer “Mars et Avril”.

Well, it's two things. First, it's time.

A segunda coisa é amor.

When you don't have money, you must take time,

Recebi muita, muita generosidade de todas as pessoas envolvidas.

and it took me seven years to do "Mars et Avril."

E parecia que cada departamento não tinha nada,

The second aspect is love.

por isso tinham de confiar na nossa criatividade

I got tons and tons of generosity from everyone involved.

e tornar cada problema numa oportunidade.

And it seems like every department had nothing,

E isso leva-me ao tema desta palestra:

Como as restrições, grandes restrições criativas,

so they had to rely on our creativity

podem aumentar a criatividade.

and turn every problem into an opportunity.

Mas deixem-me voltar um pouco atrás.

And that brings me to the point of my talk, actually,

Aos vinte e poucos anos, fiz algumas novelas gráficas,

how constraints, big creative constraints, can boost creativity.

mas não eram convencionais.

But let me go back in time a bit.

Eram livros que contavam uma história de ficção científica,

através de imagens e texto,

In my early 20s, I did some graphic novels,

e onde a maior parte dos atores que agora entram na adaptação em filme,

but they weren't your usual graphic novels.

They were books telling a science fiction story

estavam já envolvidos nestes livros como personagens,

through images and text,

and most of the actors who are now starring

de uma forma simples, experimental, teatral.

in the movie adaptation, they were already involved

in these books portraying characters

E um destes atores é o grande diretor de palco e ator Robert Lepage.

into a sort of experimental, theatrical, simplistic way.

Eu adoro este homem.

Sou apaixonado por ele desde criança.

And one of these actors is the great stage director

Admiro imenso a sua carreira.

and actor Robert Lepage.

E queria que este homem estivesse envolvido no meu projeto maluco,

And I just love this guy.

I've been in love with this guy since I was a kid.

e ele teve a gentileza de emprestar a sua imagem à personagem Eugène Spaak,

His career I admire a lot.

And I wanted this guy to be involved in my crazy project,

que é um cosmologista e artista que procura a relação

and he was kind enough to lend his image

entre tempo, espaço, amor, música e mulheres.

to the character of Eugène Spaak,

who is a cosmologist and artist who seeks relation

Ele encaixou perfeitamente no papel,

in between time, space, love, music and women.

And he was a perfect fit for the part,

e me encorajou a adaptar os meus livros em filme,

and Robert is actually the one who gave me my first chance.

He was the one who believed in me

and encouraged me to do an adaptation of my books

E o Robert é na verdade o primeiro exemplo

into a film, and to write, direct,

and produce the film myself.

And Robert is actually the very first example

Because this guy is the busiest man on the planet.

I mean, his agenda is booked until 2042,

and I wanted him to be in the movie,

to reprise his role in the movie.

But the thing is, had I waited

for him until 2042, my film wouldn't be

Como é que conseguem que alguém, que está muito ocupado,

a futuristic film anymore, so I just couldn't do that. Right?

Bem, eu fiz uma piada numa reunião de produção —

But that's kind of a big problem.

How do you get somebody who is too busy

isto é uma história verdadeira —

disse: “Porque é que não transformamos este homem num holograma?

to star in a movie?

Well, I said as a joke in a production meeting --

Ele está em todo o lado e em lado nenhum ao mesmo tempo,

and this is a true story, by the way —

e ele é um ser iluminado na minha cabeça,

I said, "Why don't we turn this guy into a hologram?

está entre a realidade e a realidade virtual,

Because, you know, he is everywhere

and nowhere on the planet at the same time,

and he's an illuminated being in my mind,

and he's in between reality and virtual reality,

so it would make perfect sense

to turn this guy into a hologram."

Foi assim que fizemos: Gravamos o Robert com seis câmaras.

Everybody around the table laughed,

but the joke was kind of a good solution,

Ele estava vestido de verde e estava numa espécie de aquário verde.

so that's what we ended up doing.

Cada câmara estava a cobrir 60 graus da sua cabeça,

Here's how we did it. We shot Robert with six cameras.

para que na pós-produção pudéssemos usar qualquer ângulo que precisássemos,

He was dressed in green and he was like

in a green aquarium.

e só gravamos a sua cabeça.

Each camera was covering 60 degrees of his head,

Seis meses depois,

so that in post-production we could use

filmamos um homem a fazer uma mímica para retratar o corpo,

pretty much any angle we needed,

and we shot only his head.

Six months later there was a guy on set,

E ele usou uma cobertura verde, para que pudéssemos depois apagar essa cobertura

And he was wearing a green hood

so that we could erase the green hood in postproduction

So he became like a renaissance man,

and here's what it looks like in the movie.

they're my second example of how

constraints can boost creativity,

because I desperately needed these objects in my movie.

They are objects of desire.

They are imaginary musical instruments.

And they carry a nice story with them.

Mas o problema era que eu não tinha dinheiro para os pagar.

Actually, I knew what these things would look like

Não conseguia.

in my mind for many, many years.

Era um grande problema também.

But my problem was, I didn't have the money

Como é que podem ter algo que não conseguem pagar?

to pay for them. I couldn't afford them.

E, então, uma manhã acordei com uma ideia muito boa:

So that's kind of a big problem too.

“E se fizer com que outra pessoa pague por eles?”

How do you get something that you can't afford?

And, you know, I woke up one morning with a pretty good idea.

(Risos)

Mas quem é que estaria interessado em sete instrumentos musicais por construir,

I said, "What if I have somebody else pay for them?"

(Laughter)

But who on Earth would be interested

Então pensei no Cirque du Soleil em Montreal,

by seven not-yet-built musical instruments

And I thought of Cirque du Soleil in Montreal,

Por isso contactei o Guy Laliberté, o CEO do Cirque du Soleil,

because who better to understand the kind of

e apresentei-lhe a minha ideia maluca com desenhos assim e referências visuais,

crazy poetry that I wanted to put on screen?

So I found my way to Guy Laliberté, Cirque du Soleil's CEO,

e algo maravilhoso aconteceu.

and I presented my crazy idea to him

O Guy ficou interessado nesta ideia, não porque eu lhe pedi que a financiasse,

with sketches like this and visual references,

and something pretty amazing happened.

mas porque recorri a ele com uma boa ideia na qual toda a gente ficou feliz.

Guy was interested by this idea

not because I was asking for his money,

Era um triângulo perfeito, no qual o comprador de arte estava feliz

but because I came to him with a good idea

porque conseguiu os instrumentos por um preço mais barato,

in which everybody was happy.

It was kind of a perfect triangle

porque eles ainda não estavam feitos.

Ele deu um salto de fé.

in which the art buyer was happy

E o artista Dominique Engel, um homem brilhante,

because he got the instruments at a cheaper price,

ficou feliz também porque ia trabalhar num projeto de sonho durante um ano.

because they weren't even made.

He took a leap of faith.

And the artist, Dominique Engel, brilliant guy,

E eu fiquei obviamente feliz porque consegui ter os instrumentos

he was happy too because he had a dream project

no meu filme de graça, que foi meio o que eu tentei fazer.

to work on for a year.

And obviously I was happy because I got the instruments

Aqui estão eles.

in my film for free, which was kind of what I tried to do.

So here they are.

And my last example of how constraints

and you must figure that out sooner rather than later.

And I had, again, pretty much, ideas in my mind

as to what the world would be,

but then again I turned to my childhood imagination

Este homem é alguém que eu admiro imenso e queria que ele estivesse envolvido

and went to the work of Belgian comic book master

François Schuiten in Belgium.

no filme, como designer de produção.

Mas as pessoas disseram-me: “Martin, é impossível,

And this guy is another guy I admire a lot,

ele é uma pessoa muito ocupada e vai dizer que não”.

and I wanted him to be involved in the movie

Eu disse: “Sabem que mais, em vez de imitar o seu estilo,

as a production designer.

But people told me, you know, Martin, it's impossible,

posso muito bem ligar-lhe e perguntar”.

the guy is too busy and he will say no.

Enviei-lhe os meus livros,

Well, I said, you know what, instead of mimicking his style,

e ele respondeu que estava interessado em trabalhar comigo no filme

I might as well call the real guy and ask him,

porque ele poderia ser um peixe grande num aquário pequeno.

and I sent him my books,

and he answered that he was interested

Por outras palavras, havia espaço para ele sonhar comigo.

in working on the film with me

because he could be a big fish in a small aquarium.

Então aqui estava eu com um dos meus heróis de infância,

a desenhar todos os fotogramas que estão no filme,

In other words, there was space for him to dream with me.

para os transformar no Montreal do futuro.

So here I was with one of my childhood heroes,

Foi uma colaboração maravilhosa, trabalhar com este grande artista que eu admirava.

drawing every single frame that's in the film

to turn that into Montreal in the future.

Mas, a certa altura, temos de tornar estes desenhos em realidade.

And it was an amazing collaboration

to work with this great artist whom I admire.

Por isso, uma vez mais, a minha solução era apontar

But then, you know, eventually you have to turn

para o melhor artista em que eu poderia pensar.

E há um homem em Montreal, também de Québec, chamado Carlos Monzon,

all these drawings into reality.

So, again, my solution was to aim

e ele é um artista de efeitos visuais muito bom.

for the best possible artist that I could think of.

Ele tinha sido o compositor principal de filmes como “Avatar”,

And there's this guy in Montreal, another Quebecois

called Carlos Monzon, and he's a very good VFX artist.

“Star Trek”, “Transformers”, e outros projetos desconhecidos como este,

This guy had been lead compositor on such films

e eu sabia que ele era perfeito para este projeto, tinha de o convencer,

as "Avatar" and "Star Trek" and "Transformers,"

e em vez de ele trabalhar no próximo filme do Spielberg, aceitou trabalhar no meu.

and other unknown projects like this,

and I knew he was the perfect fit for the job,

Porquê?

Porque eu ofereci-lhe um espaço para sonhar.

and I had to convince him,

and, instead of working on the next Spielberg movie,

Por isso, se não tiverem dinheiro para oferecer às pessoas,

he accepted to work on mine.

Why? Because I offered him a space to dream.

So if you don't have money to offer to people,

you must strike their imagination with something

as nice as you can think of.

So this is what happened on this movie,

and that's how it got made,

and we went to this very nice postproduction company

for six months to do this crazy film.

So I want to tell you that, if you have some crazy ideas

in your mind, and that people tell you

that it's impossible to make,

well, that's an even better reason to want to do it,

mas se começarem a lidar com os problemas,

because people have a tendency

to see the problems rather than the final result,

a vida vai começar a dançar com vocês de uma forma maravilhosa.

whereas if you start to deal with problems

as being your allies rather than your opponents,

life will start to dance with you

quem sabe, podem acabar a viajar para Marte.

in the most amazing way.

I have experienced it.
