Martin Villeneuve: How I made an impossible film

I made a film that was impossible to make,

but I didn't know it was impossible,

and that's how I was able to do it.

"Mars et Avril" is a science fiction film.

『Mars & Avril』はSF映画です

It's set in Montreal some 50 years in the future.

舞台は 50年後の カナダ・モントリオール

No one had done that kind of movie in Quebec before

ケベックで この種の映画を 手がけた人はいませんでした

because it's expensive, it's set in the future,

資金が掛かりますし 未来が舞台となれば

and it's got tons of visual effects,

膨大な数の 視覚効果が必要で

and it's shot on green screen.

グリーンバックで 撮影が行われます

Yet this is the kind of movie that I wanted to make

でも 子供の頃から ずっと こんな映画を

ever since I was a kid, really,

本当に 作りたかったんです

back when I was reading some comic books

子供の頃 コミック・ブックを読みながら

and dreaming about what the future might be.

未来はどうなるんだろうと 想像を巡らせていました

When American producers see my film,

アメリカのプロデューサーは この映画を見ると

they think that I had a big budget to do it,

かなりの予算をかけたと 思います

like 23 million.

But in fact I had 10 percent of that budget.

I did "Mars et Avril" for only 2.3 million.

『Mars & Avril』は 230万ドルで製作しました

So you might wonder, what's the deal here?

なぜ そんな事ができたのかと

How did I do this?

不思議に思われているかもしれません

Well, it's two things. First, it's time.

秘訣は２つあります 先ずは時間です

When you don't have money, you must take time,

お金が無い時は 時間を掛けなければいけません

and it took me seven years to do "Mars et Avril."

私の場合 『Mars & Avril』の完成まで ７年の歳月が掛かりました

The second aspect is love.

２つ目の秘訣は 愛です

I got tons and tons of generosity from everyone involved.

製作に関わった方々から 寛大な支援を受けました

And it seems like every department had nothing,

映画スタッフは 予算も何も無かったので

so they had to rely on our creativity

皆の創造力に 委ねられました

and turn every problem into an opportunity.

そして 全ての問題が 好機に転換しました

And that brings me to the point of my talk, actually,

これが今日の 話の本題に繋がります

how constraints, big creative constraints, can boost creativity.

創作上の制約が どのように 創造性の向上につながるかです

But let me go back in time a bit.

先ずは 少し時間を 巻き戻しましょう

In my early 20s, I did some graphic novels,

私が20代前半の頃 グラフィック小説を手がけました

but they weren't your usual graphic novels.

一般的なグラフィック小説とは違い

They were books telling a science fiction story

文章や写真を使って

through images and text,

SF物語を 伝えるものでした

and most of the actors who are now starring

映画化した 『Mars & Avril』に 出演している 多くの役者が

in the movie adaptation, they were already involved

既に この小説の キャラクターに扮して

in these books portraying characters

実験的 演劇的

into a sort of experimental, theatrical, simplistic way.

単純化した方法で 携わっていました

And one of these actors is the great stage director

その中の 一人は 素晴らしい舞台監督で俳優でもある

and actor Robert Lepage.

ロベール・ルパージュです

And I just love this guy.

彼のことは 大好きです

I've been in love with this guy since I was a kid.

子供の頃から 大好きだったんです

His career I admire a lot.

彼のやる仕事に とても憧れていて

And I wanted this guy to be involved in my crazy project,

私のクレイジーなプロジェクトに 参加してもらえたらと思っていたら

and he was kind enough to lend his image

ウジェーヌ・スパークという キャラクターに

to the character of Eugène Spaak,

彼のイメージを使わせてくれました

who is a cosmologist and artist who seeks relation

このキャラクターは 宇宙論を研究するアーティストで

in between time, space, love, music and women.

時間､空間､愛､音楽､女性の間に 存在する関係を追求しています

And he was a perfect fit for the part,

ロベールは この役にぴったりでした

and Robert is actually the one who gave me my first chance.

実は 最初のチャンスを与えてくれのは ロベールでした

He was the one who believed in me

彼が 私を信じてくれたんです

and encouraged me to do an adaptation of my books

そして 私のグラフィック小説を 映画化し

into a film, and to write, direct,

自分で脚本・監督・製作するよう

and produce the film myself.

後押ししてくれました

And Robert is actually the very first example

実は 制約が創造性を 向上させることの

of how constraints can boost creativity.

最初の例になったのも ロベールでした

Because this guy is the busiest man on the planet.

なぜなら 彼は地球上で 一番忙しい人なんです

I mean, his agenda is booked until 2042,

彼の予定は2042年まで ビッシリ詰まっていて

and he's really hard to get,

なかなか時間をとってもらえません

and I wanted him to be in the movie,

でもこの映画でも

to reprise his role in the movie.

本と同じ役を演じてもらいたかった

But the thing is, had I waited

でも問題は 2042年まで 待ったら この映画が

for him until 2042, my film wouldn't be

未来映画では 無くなってしまいますね？

a futuristic film anymore, so I just couldn't do that. Right?

ですから 彼の予定が空くまで 待つわけにはいきません

But that's kind of a big problem.

これは大きな問題です

How do you get somebody who is too busy

こんなに忙しい人に 映画に出演してもらうには

to star in a movie?

どうしたらいいでしょうか？

Well, I said as a joke in a production meeting --

製作会議で冗談めかしに 言ったんですが

and this is a true story, by the way —

ちなみに 本当の話です

I said, "Why don't we turn this guy into a hologram?

「ロベールをホログラムにしたら どうかな？

Because, you know, he is everywhere

彼は同じ時間に 地球上の あらゆる所にいたり

and nowhere on the planet at the same time,

いなかったりするし

and he's an illuminated being in my mind,

私の中では 彼は神のような存在で

and he's in between reality and virtual reality,

現実と仮想世界の 狭間にいるような人なので

so it would make perfect sense

彼をホログラムにするのは

to turn this guy into a hologram."

完璧に的を得ているんだ」って

Everybody around the table laughed,

会議にいた 全員が笑いました

but the joke was kind of a good solution,

でも この冗談で 上手く行けそうだということになり

so that's what we ended up doing.

実際 この方法で 問題を解決しました

Here's how we did it. We shot Robert with six cameras.

まず６台のカメラで ロベールを撮影します

He was dressed in green and he was like

彼には緑色の服を着て 緑色の水槽のような場所に

in a green aquarium.

入ってもらってもらいます

Each camera was covering 60 degrees of his head,

頭部60度の範囲を 各カメラで撮影したので

so that in post-production we could use

撮影後の編集作業で

pretty much any angle we needed,

必要なアングルを ほぼ網羅できました

and we shot only his head.

撮影したのは彼の頭部のみです

Six months later there was a guy on set,

６ヵ月後 実際のセットで演ずるのは

a mime portraying the body,

彼の体となる代役で

the vehicle for the head.

これが頭を乗っける体になります

And he was wearing a green hood

代役の頭には 緑の覆いを被せてあるので

so that we could erase the green hood in postproduction

編集時に この部分を削除し

and replace it with Robert Lepage's head.

ロベール・ルパージュの頭と すげかえるわけです

So he became like a renaissance man,

これで 博学者っぽくなりました

and here's what it looks like in the movie.

didn't account for the technical challenges.

I welded the breech, but the valve is still gaping.

I tried to lift the pallets to lower the pressure in the sound box,

but I might have hit a heartstring.

that you see in this excerpt,

they're my second example of how

制約が 創造性を向上させる

constraints can boost creativity,

２つ目の例です

because I desperately needed these objects in my movie.

私の映画の中で不可欠な

They are objects of desire.

欲望の対象ともいえる

They are imaginary musical instruments.

想像上の楽器です

And they carry a nice story with them.

この楽器にまつわる 素敵な逸話があります

Actually, I knew what these things would look like

実はこの楽器がどのようなものか

in my mind for many, many years.

頭の中で想像していました

But my problem was, I didn't have the money

問題は この楽器を作る お金が無かったこと

to pay for them. I couldn't afford them.

とても手が届きませんでした

So that's kind of a big problem too.

ですから ある意味 大問題だったわけです

How do you get something that you can't afford?

手の届かないものを どうやって手に入れるか？

And, you know, I woke up one morning with a pretty good idea.

ある朝 かなり良いアイデアと共に 目覚めました

I said, "What if I have somebody else pay for them?"

「誰かに それを払わせたらどうだろう？」って

But who on Earth would be interested

でも 一体どこの誰が 女性の体に―

by seven not-yet-built musical instruments

インスパイアされた まだ作られもしていない

inspired by women's bodies?

７つの楽器に 興味を持つでしょうか？

And I thought of Cirque du Soleil in Montreal,

そこで モントリオールの シルク・ドゥ・ソレイユが思いつきました

because who better to understand the kind of

スクリーンに映し出したい クレイジーな―

crazy poetry that I wanted to put on screen?

詩みたいなものを 一番理解してくれると思ったからです

So I found my way to Guy Laliberté, Cirque du Soleil's CEO,

それで シルク・ドゥ・ソレイユのCEOである ギー・ラリベルテに会って

and I presented my crazy idea to him

こんなスケッチと ビジュアル資料を使って

with sketches like this and visual references,

私のクレイジーなアイデアを 披露したんです

and something pretty amazing happened.

すると とても素敵なことが起こりました

Guy was interested by this idea

ギーは 私がお金を 求めたからではなく

not because I was asking for his money,

皆がハッピーになれる

but because I came to him with a good idea

良いアイデアを 持って来たから

in which everybody was happy.

興味を持ってくれました

It was kind of a perfect triangle

ハッピーになったのは 実は３人で

in which the art buyer was happy

１人目はアートバイヤー

because he got the instruments at a cheaper price,

彼は まだ作られていない楽器を安値で買えて

because they weren't even made.

ハッピーでした

He took a leap of faith.

賭けをしたわけです

And the artist, Dominique Engel, brilliant guy,

２人目の アーティストの ドミニク・エンゲルは素晴らしい方で

he was happy too because he had a dream project

彼も一年掛けて 取り組める 夢のプロジェクトにハッピーで

to work on for a year.

もちろん 私もハッピーでした

And obviously I was happy because I got the instruments

映画のための楽器を念願どおり タダで手に入れました

in my film for free, which was kind of what I tried to do.

完璧にお互いのニーズが合いました

So here they are.

こちらが その楽器です

And my last example of how constraints

制約が創造性を 向上させる 私の最後の例を

can boost creativity

お話します

comes from the green,

緑に由来します

because this is a weird color, a crazy color,

不思議で クレイジーな色ですよね

and you need to replace the green screens eventually

いずれグリーンスクリーンを 画像に置き換えなければいけません

and you must figure that out sooner rather than later.

どんな画像にするか 早いうちに決める必要があります

And I had, again, pretty much, ideas in my mind

私の頭の中には 様々なアイデアがあって

as to what the world would be,

世界がどうなるかを ほぼ決めていました

but then again I turned to my childhood imagination

これも子供時代の空想に立ち帰り

and went to the work of Belgian comic book master

ベルギーのコミックの達人を思いつきました

François Schuiten in Belgium.

ベルギーの フランソワ・スクイテンです

And this guy is another guy I admire a lot,

この方のことも とても尊敬していて

and I wanted him to be involved in the movie

プロダクション・デザイナーとして 彼にも映画に

as a production designer.

関わって欲しいと思っていました

But people told me, you know, Martin, it's impossible,

でも 周りの人に 「マーティン 彼は忙し過ぎるから

the guy is too busy and he will say no.

どうせ断られるよ」と言われました

Well, I said, you know what, instead of mimicking his style,

それでも 彼のスタイルを真似するくらいなら

I might as well call the real guy and ask him,

本人に電話して頼もうと決め

and I sent him my books,

私の本も贈りました

and he answered that he was interested

すると映画の製作に参加したいと言う

in working on the film with me

返事が来ました

because he could be a big fish in a small aquarium.

なぜなら彼は小さな水槽で大きな魚になれる

In other words, there was space for him to dream with me.

夢を追いかけることができるからです

So here I was with one of my childhood heroes,

なんと 私の子供時代の ヒーローと

drawing every single frame that's in the film

映画の１コマ１コマの絵を描いて

to turn that into Montreal in the future.

未来のモントリオールを創り上げたのです

And it was an amazing collaboration

彼のような 敬愛する 偉大なアーティストとの

to work with this great artist whom I admire.

仕事は 素晴らしい 協同作業でした

But then, you know, eventually you have to turn

でも 究極的にはこの絵を

all these drawings into reality.

実際に作らなくてはいけません

So, again, my solution was to aim

そこで また私の解決策は

for the best possible artist that I could think of.

私の中の最高のアーティストを 見つけることでした

And there's this guy in Montreal, another Quebecois

モントリオールにいる カルロス・モンソンは

called Carlos Monzon, and he's a very good VFX artist.

ケベック人で とても才能のある 視覚効果アーティストです

This guy had been lead compositor on such films

この分野を 牽引するアーティストで

as "Avatar" and "Star Trek" and "Transformers,"

『アバター』 『スタートレック』 『トランスフォーマー』

and other unknown projects like this,

その手の無名の作品も手がけました

and I knew he was the perfect fit for the job,

私の映画製作に ピッタリだと確信しました

and I had to convince him,

ですから 次の スピルバーグ映画で

and, instead of working on the next Spielberg movie,

仕事をする代わりに 私と 働いてくれるよう 説得しました

he accepted to work on mine.

承諾してくれました

Why? Because I offered him a space to dream.

なぜかって？それは 彼に夢を追いかけるチャンスをあげたからです

So if you don't have money to offer to people,

ですから 皆さんに 差し出せる お金が無かったら

you must strike their imagination with something

考えられる ありったけの素晴らしい力で

as nice as you can think of.

その人の 想像力を 刺激してみてください

So this is what happened on this movie,

以上が この映画に まつわる出来事で

and that's how it got made,

どうやって製作が実現したかです

and we went to this very nice postproduction company

その後 モントリオールにある ビジョングローバルと言う

in Montreal called Vision Globale,

とても素晴らしい ポストプロダクション会社に 巡り合いました

and they lent their 60 artists to work full time

私のクレイジーな映画のため そこに所属する 60名のアーティストを

for six months to do this crazy film.

フルタイムで ６ヶ月も貸してくれたんです

So I want to tell you that, if you have some crazy ideas

ですから 皆さんにお伝えしたいことは

in your mind, and that people tell you

クレイジーなアイデアがあって

that it's impossible to make,

周りの人から 不可能だと言われたら

well, that's an even better reason to want to do it,

むしろ ぜひ挑戦してください

because people have a tendency

なぜなら人は成果よりも

to see the problems rather than the final result,

問題を見てしまう 傾向があるからです

whereas if you start to deal with problems

問題を敵と考えるのではなく

as being your allies rather than your opponents,

味方にすることで

life will start to dance with you

人生は思いもしなかったように

in the most amazing way.

すばらしく踊り始めるでしょう

I have experienced it.

私が経験済みです

And you might end up doing some crazy projects,

そうすれば クレイジーな プロジェクトをやって

and who knows, you might even end up

気づいたら 火星にだって

going to Mars.

行けるかもしれません
