and the relation between them.

Some years ago,

a former student of mine called me

“Swarthmore” ကောလိပ်ကိုတက်ချင်ပါတယ်တဲ့။

to talk about his daughter.

အဲဒီမှာနည်းပြလုပ်ခဲ့ဖူးတဲ့

It turns out his daughter was a high school senior,

ကျွန်တော့်အနေနဲ့ ဘယ်လိုအကြံပေးနိုင်မယ် ဆိုတာလည်း သူသိချင်နေပါတယ်။

was seriously interested in applying to Swarthmore,

Swarthmore ‌ကောလိပ်ဆိုတာ ဝင်ခွ့င်ရဖို့ ခက်ခဲတဲ့ကျောင်းပါ

where I taught,

and he wanted to get my sense of whether she would get in.

Swarthmore is an extremely hard school to get into.

So I said, "She sounds fabulous.

She sounds like just the kind of student

that Swarthmore would love to have."

And so he said, "Well, does that mean that she'll get in?"

There aren't enough spots at Harvard or Yale or Princeton or Stanford.

There aren't enough spots at Google or Amazon or Apple.

တော်တဲ့ လူတွေ အများကြီးရှိပြီး

There aren't enough spots at the TED Conference.

There are an awful lot of good people,

သူက “ဒါအရမ်းကောင်းတဲ့မေးခွန်းပါပဲ”

and some of them are not going to make it."

So he said, "Well, what are we supposed to do?"

And I said, "That's a very good question."

What are we supposed to do?

And I know what colleges and universities have done.

In the interest of fairness,

what they've done is they've kept ratcheting up the standards

because it doesn't seem fair to admit less qualified people

and reject better qualified people,

so you just keep raising the standards higher and higher

until they're high enough that you can admit

only the number of students that you can fit.

And this violates a lot of people's sense of what justice and fairness is.

မတူကွဲပြားတဲ့ ထင်မြင်ယူဆချက် မတူညီတဲ့ ခံယူချက်တွေ ရှိကြပါတယ်။

ဒါတွေထဲမှာမှ လူတွေအားလုံးနီးပါး

People in American society have different opinions

သဘောတူမယ့် အချက်ကို ကျွန်တော်သိတယ်။

about what it means to say that some sort of process is just,

" ကိုယ်နဲ့ထိုက်တန်တာ ပြန်ရမယ်ဆိုတာပါ“။

but I think there's one thing that pretty much everyone agrees on,

ဒါကြောင့် ကျွန်တော့်တပည့်ကို ဒီလိုပြောပြခဲ့တယ်။

that in a just system, a fair system,

ကောလိပ်ဝင်ခွင့်တွေ ရွေးချယ်ရာမှာ ကျောင်းသူကျောင်းသားတွေဟာ

people get what they deserve.

သူတို့နဲ့ ထိုက်တန်ရာကို ရမယ်ဆိုတာ မမှန်ကန်ပါဘူး။

And what I was telling my former student

တချို့လူတွေ ရပြီး တချို့က သူတို့နဲ့ သင့်တော်ရာကို မရကြပါဘူး။

is that when it comes to college admissions,

ဒါဟာ ဖြစ်ပျက်နေကြ လောကနိယာမလိုပါပဲ။

it just isn't true that people get what they deserve.

ကောလိပ်ကျောင်းဝင်ခွင့်လျှောက်တဲ့အခါမှာ

Some people get what they deserve, and some people don't,

သင်ဟာအထက်တန်းကျောင်းသားတွေကြားမှာ

and that's just the way it is.

When you ratchet up requirements as colleges have done,

what you do is you create a crazy competition

among high school kids,

because it's not adequate to be good,

it's not adequate to be good enough,

you have to be better than everybody else who is also applying.

And what this has done,

or what this has contributed to,

ဒီလိုပြိုင်ဆိုင်မှုနဲ့ မျိုးဆက်တစ်ခုကို ဖျက်ဆီးနေကြတယ်၊

is a kind of epidemic of anxiety and depression

ကျွန်တော်အဖြေရှာနေခဲ့သလိုပဲ

that is just crushing our teenagers.

ဒီပြသနာကို ဖြေရှင်းဖို့ နည်းလမ်းရှိပါတယ်။

We are wrecking a generation with this kind of competition.

ဘယ်လိုဖြေရှင်းကြမလဲဆိုတော့

As I was thinking about this,

ကောလိပ်ဝင်ခွင့်ခေါ်တဲ့အခါမှာ

it occurred to me there's a way to fix this problem.

ထက်မြတ်တဲ့ကျောင်းသူကျောင်းသားတွေနဲ့

And here's what we could do:

when people apply to college,

အခြားကျောင်းသားတွေကိုခွဲခြားလိုက်ကြမယ်

ပြီးတော့ အရည်အချင်းမမှီသူတွေကိုတော့ ဝင်ခွင့်ပယ်ချမှာပေါ့

we distinguish between the applicants who are good enough to be successful

ခုနက ရွေးထားတဲ့ သူတွေရဲ့ နာမည်တွေကို စာရွက်လေးတွေမှာရေး

and the ones who aren't,

ဦးထုပ်တစ်လုံးထဲမှာ မဲလိပ်ပြီး ထည့်ထားလိုက်မယ်လေ

and we reject the ones who aren't good enough to be successful,

ပြီးရင်တော့ မဲနှိုက်ကြတာပေါ့ဗျာ

and then we take all of the others, and we put their names in a hat,

ပြောရမယ်ဆိုရင် ကောလိပ်ဝင်ခွင့်ကို ထီမဲဖောက်သလို လုပ်လိုက်တာပါပဲ

and we just pick them out at random

ပြောမရဘူးဗျ... ITကုမ္ပဏီတွေအတွက် အလုပ်ခေါ်ရင်လဲ ဒီနည်းသုံးရင်ရမယ်

and admit them.

In other words, we do college admissions by lottery,

ကဲပါ...ဆက်ပြောရမယ်ဆိုရင်

TED Show ပွဲတွေကို ဖိတ်ကြားမယ့် လူစာရင်းတောင် ဒီလိုရွေးလို့ရနိုင်တယ်။

and maybe we do job offers at tech companies by lottery,

ဒီလို မဲစနစ်နဲ့လေ..

ကဲ ကျွန်တော့ကို အထင်မလွဲပါနဲ့၊

and -- perish the thought --

maybe we even make decisions about who gets invited to talk at TED

ဒီမဲစနစ်ဟာ မတရားမှုကို မျှတသွားစေတယ်လို့တော့ မဆိုလိုဘူး။

သူတို့ထိုက်တန်တာကို မရရှိလိုက်တဲ့ ကျောင်းသူကျောင်းသားတွေရှိနေဦးမှာပါပဲ။

by lottery.

Now, don't misunderstand me,

a lottery like this is not going to eliminate the injustice.

ဒါပေမဲ့ အနည်းဆုံးတော့ ရိုးသားတယ်။

မတရားမှုတွေရှိလာပြီဆိုရင် ဆက်လက်ပြီး မသိဟန်ဆောင်တာ ရပ်ကြဖို့လိုမယ်။

There will still be plenty of people who don't get what they deserve.

But at least it's honest.

မဟုတ်ရင် ပေါက်ကွဲခါနီး ဘောလုံးကို ဆက်ပြီးထိုးနှက်နေသလိုပါပဲ

It reveals the injustice for what it is instead of pretending otherwise,

ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ အနာဂတ်မျိုးဆက်သစ်တွေဟာ အဲဒီဖိအားအောက်မှာ ရှင်သန်နေကြရတယ်။

and it punctures the incredible pressure balloon

ဒါဟာဘာကြောင့် ကျိုးကြောင်းဆီလျော်တဲ့ တင်ပြချက်ဖြစ်ရသလဲဆိုတော့

that our high school kids are now living under.

ကျွန်တော့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် ပြန်ပြောရမယ်ဆိုရင်

ထွေထွေထူးထူးဆွေးနွေးစရာမလိုပါဘူး။

So why is it that this perfectly reasonable proposal,

ဘာကြောင့်လဲဆိုတာ သိမယ်ထင်တယ်။

ဒီလိုဖြစ်တတ်တဲ့အလေ့အထကို မုန်းနေကြတာပဲ ဖြစ်ရမယ်

if I do say so myself,

doesn't get any serious discussion?

တကယ်အရေးကြီးတဲ့အရာတွေဟာကံကောင်းလို့ ဒါမှမဟုတ် အခွင့်အရေးရလိုသာ ရောက်လာတယ်။

I think I know why.

I think it's that we hate the idea

ကျွန်တော်တို့ဟာ ကိုယ်လိုချင်တာကိုယ်ရဖို့ ဘဝဖန်ဆင်းရှင်တွေ မဟုတ်ကြဘူးလေ

that really important things in life might happen by luck or by chance,

ကျွန်တော်တော့ ဒါကိုမုန်းတယ်။

လူတွေလည်း ဒါကိုမုန်းတာ မဆန်းပါဘူးလေ။

that really important things in our lives are not under our control.

ဒါပေမဲ့ နည်းလမ်းတွေက ရိုးရှင်းပါတယ်။

I hate that idea.

ပထမဆုံး ကောလိပ်ဝင်ခွင့်တွေကို မဲစနစ်နဲ့ရွေးချယ်ကြမယ်။

It's not surprising that people hate that idea,

but it simply is the way things are.

၀င်ခွင့်ရွေးချယ်သူတွေကတော့ ဒါကို ထုတ်ပြောလို့မရဘူးပေါ့။

First of all, college admissions already is a lottery.

ပွင့်ပွင့်လင်းလင်း ပြောရအောင်။

ပြီးတော့ ဒုတိယတစ်ခုက

မဲစနစ်သာ တကယ်အလုပ်ဖြစ်တယ်ဆိုရင်

It's just that the admissions officers pretend that it isn't.

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ဘဝရဲ့ လူတိုင်းနီးပါးမှာ ရှိတဲ့ ကံကြမ္မာရဲ့ အရေးပါမှုကိုလည်း

So let's be honest about it.

And second,

I think if we appreciated that it was a lottery,

အသိအမှတ်ပြုရလိမ့်မယ်။

ကျွန်တော့ကို ကြည့်ပါ။

it would also get us to acknowledge the importance of good fortune

in almost every one of our lives.

Almost all the most significant events in my life have occurred,

to a large degree,

as a result of good luck.

When I was in seventh grade, my family left New York

and went to Westchester County.

Right at the beginning of school,

I met a lovely young girl who became my friend,

then she became my best friend,

Happily, she's been my wife now

I had very little to do with this. This was a lucky accident.

I went off to college,

I didn't even know what psychology was,

but it fit into my schedule and it met requirements,

so I took it.

And by luck, the class was taught

by a superstar introductory psychology teacher, a legend.

Because of that, I became a psychology major.

Went off to graduate school.

I was finishing up.

A friend of mine who taught at Swarthmore decided

he didn't want to be a professor anymore,

and so he quit to go to medical school.

The job that he occupied opened up,

I applied for it, I got it,

the only job I've ever applied for.

I spent 45 years teaching at Swarthmore,

And to just give one last example,

I was giving a talk about some of my work in New York,

and there was somebody in the audience who came up to me after my talk.

He introduced himself.

He said, "My name is Chris.

Would you like to give a talk at TED?"

အဲ့ဒီတုန်းက TED ဆိုတာ အခုလိုလူသိမများသေးဘူး။

And my response was, "What's TED?"

ကျွန်တော်ရဲ့ TED talk show ဟာ

Well, I mean, he told me,

လူသန်းပေါင်း ၂၀ကျော်ကြည့်ရှုအားပေးတဲ့ ပွဲဖြစ်လာပါတယ်။

and TED then wasn't what it is now.

အနှစ်ချုပ်ရမယ်ဆိုရင် ကျွန်တော်ဟာ ကံကောင်းတဲ့ လူပါ။

But in the intervening years,

the talks I've given at TED have been watched

အိမ်ထောင်ရေး ကံကောင်းတယ်။

by more than 20 million people.

So the conclusion is, I'm a lucky man.

I'm lucky about my marriage.

I'm lucky about my education.

I'm lucky about my career.

ကျွန်တော့ အောင်မြင်မှုနဲ့ ထိုက်တန်လား။

And I'm lucky to have had a platform and a voice at something like TED.

ဒါပေါ့ ထိုက်တန်တာပေါ့ဗျာ။

Did I deserve the success I've had?

Sure I deserve that success,

just as you probably deserve your success.

But lots of people also deserve successes like ours

ဒါဆို လူတွေက သူတို့ ထိုက်တန်တဲ့ အရာကို ရကြလား။

who haven't had it.

ဘယ်ဟုတ်မလဲ

အလုပ်ကြိုးစားပြီး စည်းကမ်းလိုက်နာတာတွေဟာ ဘာမှ အာမခံချက် မရှိပါဘူး။

So do people get what they deserve?

Is society just?

ဒီလိုမတရားမှုတွေနဲ့ ကံကောင်းခြင်းရဲ့ဗဟိုကျမှုဟာ

Of course not.

Working hard and playing by the rules is just no guarantee of anything.

ရှောင်လွှဲလို့မရတာကို သဘောပေါက်ရင်

ကျွန်တော်တို့ ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် မေးနိုင်တာက

If we appreciate the inevitability of this kind of injustice

and the centrality of good fortune,

we might ask ourselves

what responsibilities do we have

to the people we are now celebrating as heroes in this time of the pandemic

ရောဂါကုစရာငွေလည်းမကုန်တော့ ပျော်ကြတယ်၊ ပါတီလုပ်ကြတယ်။

to make sure that they remain whole and their lives aren't ruined

by the cost of dealing with the illness?

ရောဂါကူးစက်ခံနေရတဲ့လူတွေကို ကျွန်တော်တို့ဘာလုပ်ပေးသင့်သလဲ။

What do we owe people who struggle,

လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ နှစ်ငါးဆယ်ခန့်က

အတွေးအခေါ်ပညာရှင် John Rawls က “Theory of Justice”ဆိုတဲ့စာအုပ်ကို ရေးပြီး

work hard and are less lucky than we are?

" The veil of ignorance”လို့သူခေါ်တဲ့ အယူအဆကို မိတ်ဆက်ထားတယ်။

About a half century ago,

the philosopher John Rawls wrote a book called "A Theory of Justice,"

မေးခွန်းက..

လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းမှာ ဖြစ်လာမယ့် သင့်နေရာမှန်ကို မသိရင်

and in that book, he introduced a concept that he called "the veil of ignorance."

ဘယ်လိုမျို့ လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းကို သင်ဖန်တီးချင်လဲ။

The question he posed was:

If you didn't know what your position in society was going to be,

သူက အကြံပေးတာက

အခြေမှာပဲဖြစ်ဖြစ်၊ အထက်မှာပဲဖြစ်ဖြစ်၊ လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းထဲကို

what kind of a society would you want to create?

ဝင်ရောက်ချိန်ကို မသိတဲ့အခါ

ကျွန်တော်တို့ လိုချင်တာက တော်တော်လေး ညီမျှတဲ့ လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းပါ။

And what he suggested

is that when we don't know whether we're going to enter society

ဒါမှ ကံဆိုးသူ​တွေ​တောင်​

သင့်​တင့်​​တဲ့၊အဓိပ္ပါယ်ရှိတဲ့ ကျေနပ်စရာ ဘဝတွမှာ ရှင်သန်နိုင်မှာလေ။

at the top or at the bottom,

what we want is a society that is pretty damn equal,

ဒီတော့ အောင်မြင်၊ကံကောင်း သူတွေအားလုံးက ဒါကို လူမှုသိုင်းအဝိုင်းဆီ ပြန်ယူလာပေးပြီး

so that even the unlucky

will be able to live decent, meaningful and satisfying lives.

ကျွန်တော်တို့လို အောင်မြင်မှုနဲ့ ထိုက်တန်ပေမဲ့ ကံကို မကောင်းတဲ့

So bring this back, all of you lucky, successful people, to your communities,

လူတွေကို ဂုဏ်ပြုဖို့၊ စောင့်ရှောက်ဖို့

and do what you can to make sure that we honor and take care of
