I'm honored to be here to talk to you,

and what I'm going to talk about today is luck and justice

and the relation between them.

딸이 고등학교 3학년인데

Some years ago,

a former student of mine called me

스와스모어 대학에 정말로 가고 싶어 한다고 했습니다.

to talk about his daughter.

제가 강의하던 곳이었지요.

It turns out his daughter was a high school senior,

제자가 알고 싶었던 것은

딸이 스와스모어에 들어갈 수 있을지에 대한 제 생각이었습니다.

was seriously interested in applying to Swarthmore,

스와스모어는 입학하기가 몹시 어려운 학교입니다.

where I taught,

and he wanted to get my sense of whether she would get in.

전 딸에 대해 말해보라고 했습니다.

그는 딸에 대해 설명했습니다.

Swarthmore is an extremely hard school to get into.

So I said, "Well, tell me about her."

And he told me about her,

what her grades were like, her board scores,

So I said, "She sounds fabulous.

She sounds like just the kind of student

And so he said, "Well, does that mean that she'll get in?"

And I said, "No.

There just aren't enough spots in the Swarthmore class

구글, 아마존, 애플에도 충분한 자리는 없고.

for everybody who's good.

There aren't enough spots at Harvard or Yale or Princeton or Stanford.

TED Conference도 마찬가지라네.

There aren't enough spots at Google or Amazon or Apple.

엄청난 수의 대단한 사람들이 있지만

그들 중 일부는 원하는 걸 얻지 못할 거야.”

There aren't enough spots at the TED Conference.

그는 말했습니다. “그러면 저희는 뭘 해야 할까요?”

There are an awful lot of good people,

전 말했습니다. “정말 좋은 질문이네.”

and some of them are not going to make it."

우리는 뭘 해야 할까요?

So he said, "Well, what are we supposed to do?"

And I said, "That's a very good question."

공정성을 위해,

What are we supposed to do?

대학들은 입학 기준을 점점 올렸습니다.

And I know what colleges and universities have done.

자격을 덜 갖춘 사람을 입학시키고

In the interest of fairness,

what they've done is they've kept ratcheting up the standards

자격을 더 갖춘 사람을 떨어뜨리는 게 공정한 것처럼 보이지 않기 때문입니다.

because it doesn't seem fair to admit less qualified people

그러니 그저 기준을 계속 올리는 거죠.

기준이 아주 높아서

and reject better qualified people,

감당할 수 있는 소수의 학생만 입학시킬 수 있을 때까지요.

so you just keep raising the standards higher and higher

이러한 것은 많은 사람들의

until they're high enough that you can admit

정의와 공정함에 대한 생각에 반합니다.

only the number of students that you can fit.

미국 사회는 어떤 절차가 정당하다고 하는 것이

And this violates a lot of people's sense of what justice and fairness is.

어떤 의미인지에 대해 의견들이 다릅니다.

그러나 제 생각에 거의 모두가 동의하는 게 하나 있는데,

People in American society have different opinions

올바르고 공정한 체계에서는

about what it means to say that some sort of process is just,

자신이 마땅히 받아야 할 것을 받는다는 것입니다.

but I think there's one thing that pretty much everyone agrees on,

제가 옛 제자에게

that in a just system, a fair system,

대학 입학에 대해 했던 말은

people get what they deserve.

사람들이 자신이 마땅히 받아야 할 것을 받는다는 건 사실이 아니란 겁니다.

And what I was telling my former student

어떤 사람들은 받아야 마땅할 것을 얻고 또 일부는 그렇지 않습니다.

is that when it comes to college admissions,

그게 현실입니다.

it just isn't true that people get what they deserve.

대학이 그러했듯, 여러분이 요구 조건을 조금씩 올릴 때

Some people get what they deserve, and some people don't,

여러분이 한 것은 고등학생들 사이에 심각한 경쟁을 만든 겁니다.

and that's just the way it is.

When you ratchet up requirements as colleges have done,

왜냐하면 잘하는 것만으로 충분하지 않고

what you do is you create a crazy competition

필요한 만큼 잘하는 것으로도 충분하지 않고,

같이 지원하는 다른 모든 이들보다 더 잘해야 하기 때문입니다.

among high school kids,

because it's not adequate to be good,

이러한 현상이 한 일은,

혹은 이러한 현상이 유발한 것은,

it's not adequate to be good enough,

불안과 우울증의 확산입니다.

you have to be better than everybody else who is also applying.

이건 십 대들을 망가뜨릴 뿐입니다.

And what this has done,

or what this has contributed to,

우리는 이러한 경쟁으로 한 세대를 망가뜨리고 있습니다.

is a kind of epidemic of anxiety and depression

저는 이 문제에 대해 생각하다가 이 문제를 해결할 방법이 떠올랐습니다.

that is just crushing our teenagers.

We are wrecking a generation with this kind of competition.

이것이 우리가 할 수 있는 것입니다.

As I was thinking about this,

학생들이 대학에 지원할 때

it occurred to me there's a way to fix this problem.

지원자들을 분류해서

성공하기에 충분한 사람들과 그렇지 않은 사람들로 나누고

And here's what we could do:

when people apply to college,

그렇지 않은 사람을 탈락시킵니다.

we distinguish between the applicants who are good enough to be successful

남은 사람들을 모아서 그들의 이름을 모자 안에 넣고,

and the ones who aren't,

무작위로 고른 다음에 합격시키는 겁니다.

and we reject the ones who aren't good enough to be successful,

and then we take all of the others, and we put their names in a hat,

다른 말로, 대학 입학을 추첨으로 하는 것입니다.

and we just pick them out at random

아니면 어쩌면

and admit them.

기술 회사의 사원 선발을 추첨으로 할 수도 있고

In other words, we do college admissions by lottery,

그리고, 말도 안 되지만,

TED 강연자를 초청하는 것 역시

and maybe we do job offers at tech companies by lottery,

추첨으로 결정할 수 있습니다.

and -- perish the thought --

maybe we even make decisions about who gets invited to talk at TED

이러한 추첨이 부당함을 없앨 순 없을 겁니다.

마땅히 가져야 할 것을 얻지 못한 사람이 여전히 많을 겁니다.

by lottery.

Now, don't misunderstand me,

a lottery like this is not going to eliminate the injustice.

하지만 최소한 이 방식은 정직합니다.

이 방식은 부당함을 있는 그대로 드러냅니다.

There will still be plenty of people who don't get what they deserve.

그렇지 않은 척하지 않습니다.

But at least it's honest.

그리고 이 방식은 고등학생 아이들을 짓누르는

It reveals the injustice for what it is instead of pretending otherwise,

무지막지한 압력 풍선에 구멍을 냅니다.

and it punctures the incredible pressure balloon

그렇다면 이렇게 완벽하게 합리적인 제안이,

that our high school kids are now living under.

만약 제가 말한 그대로라면,

어떠한 진지한 의논도 이끌어내지 못하는 걸까요?

So why is it that this perfectly reasonable proposal,

저는 이유를 알 것 같습니다.

우리는 이런 생각을 싫어하기 때문입니다.

if I do say so myself,

doesn't get any serious discussion?

인생에서 정말 중요한 것들이

I think I know why.

운이나 우연에 의해 일어난다는 생각,

I think it's that we hate the idea

인생에서 정말 중요한 것들이 우리의 통제하에 있지 않다는 생각이요.

that really important things in life might happen by luck or by chance,

저도 그런 생각이 싫습니다.

사람들이 그런 생각을 싫어하는 것은 놀랍지 않습니다.

that really important things in our lives are not under our control.

하지만 이게 그저 현실입니다.

I hate that idea.

무엇보다,

It's not surprising that people hate that idea,

대학 입시는 이미 추첨제입니다.

but it simply is the way things are.

단지 입학처에서 그렇지 않은 척할 뿐입니다.

First of all, college admissions already is a lottery.

솔직해져 봅시다.

두 번째.

만약 대학 입시가 추첨제라고 인정한다면

It's just that the admissions officers pretend that it isn't.

일생 거의 모든 것들에서

So let's be honest about it.

And second,

운의 중요성도 인정하게 됩니다.

I think if we appreciated that it was a lottery,

저의 이야기를 봅시다.

it would also get us to acknowledge the importance of good fortune

저의 인생에서 일어난 가장 의미 있던 일 거의 모두는

in almost every one of our lives.

Take me.

거의 대부분 행운의 결과였습니다.

Almost all the most significant events in my life have occurred,

제가 7학년이었을 때 우리 가족은 뉴욕을 떠나서

웨스트체스터 카운티로 갔죠.

to a large degree,

as a result of good luck.

학기가 막 시작할 때, 사랑스러운 소녀를 만났고 우리는 친구가 됐습니다.

When I was in seventh grade, my family left New York

그녀는 저의 가장 친한 진구가 되었고

and went to Westchester County.

제 여자 친구가 되었고

Right at the beginning of school,

I met a lovely young girl who became my friend,

그리고 제 아내가 되었습니다.

행복하게도 이제 그녀가 제 아내가 된지 52년째입니다.

then she became my best friend,

then she became my girlfriend

제가 한 일은 거의 없고 운이 좋은 우연이었던 것이죠.

and then she became my wife.

Happily, she's been my wife now

저는 대학에 진학했고

for 52 years.

첫 학기에 심리학개론을 수강했습니다.

I had very little to do with this. This was a lucky accident.

저는 심리학이 무엇인지조차 알지 못했지만

I went off to college,

심리학개론이 제 시간표에 맞았고, 요구 조건을 만족했습니다.

and in my first semester, I signed up for a class in introduction to psychology.

그래서 수강했는데 우연하게도

심리학개론의 전설적인 수퍼스타 교수가 강의를 했습니다.

I didn't even know what psychology was,

but it fit into my schedule and it met requirements,

so I took it.

그래서 심리학을 전공하게 되었습니다.

And by luck, the class was taught

by a superstar introductory psychology teacher, a legend.

대학원에 갔고, 마무리 짓던 중이었죠.

스와스모어에서 강의를 하던 친구가

Because of that, I became a psychology major.

더 이상 교수를 하고 싶지 않다고 결정했고

Went off to graduate school.

의과 대학에 진학하기 위해 교수직을 그만두었습니다.

I was finishing up.

A friend of mine who taught at Swarthmore decided

그가 있던 자리가 공석이 되었고,

he didn't want to be a professor anymore,

제가 지원을 했고 그 자리에 들어가게 되었습니다.

and so he quit to go to medical school.

제가 지원했던 유일한 일자리였습니다.

저는 저의 직업에 막심한 영향을 미친 기관인

The job that he occupied opened up,

I applied for it, I got it,

스와스모어에서 45년간 강의를 해왔습니다.

the only job I've ever applied for.

I spent 45 years teaching at Swarthmore,

마지막으로 예를 하나 더 들자면,

제 일에 관해 뉴욕에서 강연하고 있을 때였습니다.

an institution that had an enormous impact on the shape that my career took.

청중 한 명이 강연이 끝난 뒤 저에게 찾아왔습니다.

And to just give one last example,

I was giving a talk about some of my work in New York,

그는 자신을 소개했습니다. “제 이름은 크리스입니다.”

“TED에서 강연해보지 않으시겠어요?”

and there was somebody in the audience who came up to me after my talk.

제 답은 ‘TED가 뭡니까?’였습니다.

He introduced himself.

He said, "My name is Chris.

제 말은, 그가 제게 권유했다는 거고,

Would you like to give a talk at TED?"

그때 TED는 지금 같지 않았습니다.

And my response was, "What's TED?"

하지만 몇 년이 지난 사이

제가 TED에서 했던 강연은 2천만이 넘는 사람들이 봤습니다.

Well, I mean, he told me,

and TED then wasn't what it is now.

그래서 저의 결론은, 저는 운이 좋은 사람이라는 겁니다.

But in the intervening years,

the talks I've given at TED have been watched

결혼에서도 운이 좋고, 교육에서도 운이 좋습니다.

by more than 20 million people.

직업에서도 운이 좋습니다.

TED 같은 무대에서 목소리를 낼 수 있었던 것도 운이 좋았습니다.

So the conclusion is, I'm a lucky man.

I'm lucky about my marriage.

I'm lucky about my education.

제가 이런 성공을 누릴 자격이 있을까요?

I'm lucky about my career.

And I'm lucky to have had a platform and a voice at something like TED.

물론 그런 성공의 자격이 있습니다.

여러분이 여러분의 성공에 자격이 있는 것만큼이요.

하지만 수많은 사람들이

Did I deserve the success I've had?

우리와 같은 성공을 할 자격이 있지만

Sure I deserve that success,

just as you probably deserve your success.

성공하지 못햇습니다.

But lots of people also deserve successes like ours

그래서 사람들은 마땅히 받아야 할 것을 다 받습니까?

사회는 공정한가요?

who haven't had it.

물론 아닙니다.

정해진 대로 열심히 일하고 노는 것은

So do people get what they deserve?

아무것도 보장해주지 않습니다.

Is society just?

우리가 이러한 부당함의 불가피성을 받아들인다면,

Of course not.

Working hard and playing by the rules is just no guarantee of anything.

그리고 행운의 중요성을 이해한다면

자신에게 물어봐야 합니다.

If we appreciate the inevitability of this kind of injustice

우리는 어떠한 책임이 있는가 말입니다.

이 팬데믹 시기에 우리가 영웅이라고 부르는 사람들에게

and the centrality of good fortune,

we might ask ourselves

그들의 가족에 큰 병이 닥칠 때

what responsibilities do we have

to the people we are now celebrating as heroes in this time of the pandemic

그들의 삶을 온전히 유지하고

치료 비용 때문에 삶이 망가지지 않게 노력하는 이들에 대해 말입니다.

when a serious illness befalls their family

to make sure that they remain whole and their lives aren't ruined

우리가 이들에게 빚진 게 무엇인가요?

고군분투하고, 열심히 일하지만, 우리보다 운이 덜 좋은 사람들에게요.

by the cost of dealing with the illness?

약 50년 전,

What do we owe people who struggle,

철학자 존 롤스가 ‘정의론’이라는 책을 썼습니다.

work hard and are less lucky than we are?

책에서 그는 ‘무지의 베일’이라는 개념을 소개합니다.

About a half century ago,

the philosopher John Rawls wrote a book called "A Theory of Justice,"

그가 제기한 질문은 이것입니다.

만약 여러분이 사회에서 처할 지위를 알지 못한다면

and in that book, he introduced a concept that he called "the veil of ignorance."

여러분은 어떤 종류의 사회를 만들고 싶습니까?

The question he posed was:

If you didn't know what your position in society was going to be,

그리고 그가 제안한 것은

우리가 사회의 상층부로 진입할지 하층부로 진입할지 모를 때

what kind of a society would you want to create?

우리가 원하는 것은 아주 평등한 사회입니다.

And what he suggested

is that when we don't know whether we're going to enter society

품위 있고, 의미 있고, 만족스러운 삶을 살 수 있습니다.

at the top or at the bottom,

what we want is a society that is pretty damn equal,

그러니 운이 좋고 성공한 여러분은

so that even the unlucky

will be able to live decent, meaningful and satisfying lives.

지역 사회로 돌아가서

우리만큼 성공할 만한 자격이 있지만

So bring this back, all of you lucky, successful people, to your communities,

단지 운이 부족했던 사람들을

우리가 존중하고 돌볼 수 있게

and do what you can to make sure that we honor and take care of

여러분이 할 수 있는 것을 하세요.
