So, I have a pretty fun job,

It's taken me almost a decade to figure this out.

My own lackluster emotional response to giving was especially puzzling

In one experiment, my colleagues Kiley Hamlin, Lara Aknin and I

Despite building my career by showing how great giving can feel,

Of course, the Group of Five program takes this idea to a whole new level.

When we first took on this project,

Now, we just refer to them as our family.

Recently, we took the kids ice skating,

and later that day, my six-year-old, Oliver, asked me,

"Mommy, who is the oldest kid in our family?"

"မေမေ၊ ကျွန်တော်တို့မိသားစုမှာ ဘယ်သူ အသက်အကြီးဆုံးလဲ။"

I assumed he was talking about his plethora of cousins,

သူ့ရဲ့ လိုတာထက်ပိုတဲ့ ဝမ်းကွဲတွေအကြောင်း သူပြောနတာလို့ ကျွန်မ ယူဆမိတယ်၊

and he was talking about them,

သူပြောတာ သူတို့အကြောင်းကို တင်မက

but also about our Syrian family.

ကျွန်မတို့ ဆီရီးယန်းမိသားစုအကြောင်းရောပါ။

Since our family arrived,

ကျွန်မတို့မိသားစု ရောက်လာကတည်းက

so many people and organizations have offered to help,

များစွာသောလူတွေနဲ့၊ အဖွဲ့အစည်းတွေဟာ အကူအညီပေးဖို့ ကမ်းလှမ်းကြတယ်၊

providing everything from free dental fillings

to summer camps.

It's made me see the goodness that exists in our community.

ဒါက ကျွန်မတို့လူစုမှာ ကောင်းမွန် မှုတည်ရှိတာ ကျွန်မကိုမြင်စေတယ်။

Thanks to one donation,

လှူဒါန်းတာတစ်ခုရဲ့ကျေးဇူးကြောင့်

the kids got to go to bike camp,

ကလေးတွေဟာ စက်ဘီး စခန်းကို သွားဖြစ်သွားတယ်၊

and every day of the week,

သီတင်းပတ်ရဲ့ ရက်တိုင်းမှာ

some member of our group tried to be there to cheer for them.

I happened to be there

the day the training wheels were supposed to come off,

and let me tell you, the four-year-old did not think this was a good idea.

So I went over and talked to him

ဒါနဲ့ ကျွန်မ စစ်ဆေးပြီး သူ့ကို

about the long-term benefits of riding without training wheels.

လေ့ကျင်ရ​ေးဘီးစီပေါပဲ စီးခြင်းရဲ့ ရေရှည်အကျိုးတွေအကြောင်း သူ့ကိုပြောတယ်။

(Laughter)

Then I remembered that he was four and barely spoke English.

ဒီနောက် သူဟာ လေးနှစ်ပဲရှိပြီး အင်္ဂလိပ်စကား ပြောတတ်ရုံဆိုတာ သတိရမိတယ်။

So I reverted to two words he definitely knew:

ဒါနဲ့ သူအတိအကျသိတဲ့ စကားလုံးနှစ်လုံးကို ပြန်ကောက်လိုက်တယ်။

ice cream.

ရေခဲမုန့်၊

You try without training wheels, I'll buy you ice cream.

လေ့ကျင့်ရေးဘီး မပါပဲ ကြိုးစား၊ မင်းကို ရေခဲမုန့်ဝယ်ပေးမယ်။

Here's what happened next.

ဒီမှာ နောက်ဖြစ်လာတာပါ။

(Video) ED: Yes. Yeah!

(ဗီဒီယို) ED: ဟုတ်ပြီ၊ ဟုတ်ပြီ။

Kid: I'm gonna try.

ကလေး။ ကြိုးစားကြည့်မယ်၊

ED: Oh my God! Look at you go!

ED: ဘုရားရေ၊ တော်လိုက်တာ။

(Squealing) Look at you go! You're doing it all by yourself!

(အသံစီစီပြော) တော်လိုက်တာနော်၊ အားလုံး တစ်ယောက်တည်း လုပ်နေတာ။

(Audience) (Laughter)

ED: So this is the kind of helping that human beings evolved to enjoy,

ED: ဒီတော့ ဒါက ခံစားနှစ်သက်ဖို့ လူသားတွေ ပြောင်းလဲဖြစ်ပေါ်တာကို ကူညီတာမျိုးပါ၊

but for 40 years,

ဒါပေမဲ့ နှစ် ၄၀ လုံးလုံး

Canada was the only country in the world

ကနေဒါ ဟာ ဒုက္ခသည်တွေကို ပံ့ပိုးဖို့

that allowed private citizens to sponsor refugees.

နိုင်ငံသားတွေကို ခွင့်ပြုတဲ့ ကမ္ဘာထဲက နိုင်ငံတစ်နိုင်ငံပါ။

Now -- Canada!

It's pretty great.

Now Australia and the UK are starting up similar programs.

Just imagine how different the refugee crisis could look

if more countries made this possible.

Creating these kinds of meaningful connections between individuals

provides an opportunity to deal with challenges

that feel overwhelming.

One of those challenges lies just blocks from where I'm standing right now,

in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver.

By some measures, it's the poorest urban postal code in Canada.

We actually debated whether to bring over a family of refugees,

because there are so many people right here already struggling.

My friend Evan told me that when he was a kid

and his parents drove through this neighborhood,

he would duck down in the back seat.

But Evan's parents never would have guessed

he would open up the doors of a local restaurant

The program that Evan helped build is called "Plenty of Plates,"

and the goal is not just to provide free meals

Each night, a local business sponsors the dinner

and sends a team of volunteers

Afterward, the leftovers get distributed to people who are out on the street,

and importantly, there's enough money left

to provide a thousand free lunches for this community

ဒီလူစုအတွက် အခမဲ့ နေလည်စာ တစ်ထောင် ပံ့ပိုးပေးဖို့

in the days that follow.

But the benefits of this program extend beyond food.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒီအစီအစဉ်ရဲ့ အကျိုးကျေးဇူးတွေက အစာအစာကိုလွန်ပြီး ကျယ်ပြန့်သွားတယ်။

For the volunteers, it provides an opportunity to engage with people,

စေတနာ့ဝန်ထမ်းတွေအတွက် လူတွေနဲ့ ထိတွေ့ဖို့၊ ထိုင်ပြီး သူတို့ရဲ့ဇာတ်လမ်းတွေ

to sit down and hear their stories.

After this experience, one volunteer changed his commute

ဒီအတွေ့အကြုံနောက်မှာ စေတနာ့ဝန်ထမ်းတစ်ယောက်ဟာ

so that instead of avoiding this neighborhood,

ဒီဝန်းကျင်ကို ရှောင်တာအစား ဒါကို ဖြတ်လျှောက်သွားနိုင်အောင်

he walks through it,

သူ့အသွားအြပန်ကို ပြောင်းခဲ့တယ်။

smiling or making eye contact as he passes familiar faces.

ရင်းနှီးနေတဲ့ မျက်နှာတွေကိုဖြတ်သွားစဉ် ပြုံးရင်း(သို့)အကြည့်ချင်းဆုံရင်းပေါ့။

All of us are capable of finding joy in giving.

ကျွန်မတို့အားလုံးဟာ လှူရာမှာ ပီတိကို ရှာနိုင်စွမ်းရှိပါတယ်။

But we shouldn't expect this to happen automatically.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒါကို အလိုအလျောက်ဖြစ်လာဖို့ မမျှော်လင့်သင့်ပါဘူး။

Spending money helping others doesn't necessarily promote happiness.

အများကိုကူညီရာမှာ ငွေသုံးခြင်းဟာ ပျော်ရွှင်မှုကို သေချာပေါက် မတိုးစေပါဘူး။

Instead, it matters how we do it.

ဒီအစား ကျွန်မတို့ လုပ်ပုံက အရေးပါတာပါ။

And if we want people to give more,

we need to subvert the way we think about charitable giving.

We need to create opportunities to give

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ ရိုင်းပင်းတဲ့ စာနာမှုကို

that enable us to appreciate our shared humanity.

နှစ်သက်ခံစားစေဖို့ ထောက်ကူတဲ့ အခွင့်လမ်းတွေပေးဖို့ ဖန်တီးဖို့လိုပါတယ်။

If any of you work for a charity,

အလှူခံအဖွဲတစ်ခုအတွက် အလုပ်လုပ်ရင်

don't reward your donors with pens or calendars.

အလှူရှင်တွေကို ဖောင်တိန်တွေ၊ ပြက္ခဒိန်တွေနဲ့ ဆုမချီးမြှင့်ပါနဲ့။

Reward them with the opportunity

to see the specific impact that their generosity is having

and to connect with the individuals and communities they're helping.

We're used to thinking about giving as something we should do.

ပေးလှူခြင်းဟာ ကျွန်မတို့လုပ်သင့်တာ တစ်ခုလို့ တွေးတာ အကျင့်ပါနေတယ်။

And it is.

ပြီးတော့ ဒါပါ။

But in thinking about it this way,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒါကို ဒီနည်းအတိုင်းတွေးရာမှာ

we're missing out on one of the best parts of being human:

လူသားဖြစ်ခြင်းရဲ့ အကောင်းဆုံး အစိတ်အပိုင်းတစ်ခု ပျောက်နေပါတယ်။

that we have evolved to find joy in helping others.

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ အများကိုကူညီခြင်းမှာ ပီတိကို ရှာတွေ့ဖို့ ပြောင်းလဲဖြစ်ပေါ်ခဲ့တာပါ။

Let's stop thinking about giving as just this moral obligation

ပေးလှူခြင်းကို သမစိတ္တ ဝတ္တရားအနေနဲ့ပဲ တွေးတာကိုရပ်ပြီး၊

and start thinking of it as a source of pleasure.
