So a while ago, I tried an experiment.

They're baby titans.

အထင်ကရ ပေါက်လေးတွေပါ။

They were 12, 3, and 1 when the hum stopped.

"ဟင်" ရပ်သွားတော့ သူတို့ဟာ ၁၂၊ ၃ နဲ့ ၁ ပါ။

The hum of the engine died.

"ဟင်" ဆိုတဲ့ စက်ဟာ သေသွားတယ်။

I stopped loving work. I couldn't restart the engine.

အလုပ် ကြိုက်တာ ရပ်သွားတယ်၊ စက်ပြန်နှိုးလို့မရခဲ့ပါ။

The hum would not come back.

"ဟင်" ပြန်လာမှာ မဟုတ်တော့ဘူး။

My hum was broken.

ကျွန်မရဲ့ "ဟင်" ပျက်သွားတယ်။

I was doing the same things I always did, all the same titan work,

အမြဲတမ်းလုပ်ခဲ့တဲ့ အထင်ကရအလုပ်ကိုပဲ အပြောင်းအလဲမရှိ လုပ်နေခဲ့တယ်။

15-hour days, working straight through the weekends,

တစ်နေ ၁၅ နာရီ အားရက်တွေ တောက်လျှောက် လုပ်နေခဲ့တယ်၊

no regrets, never surrender, a titan never sleeps, a titan never quits,

full hearts, clear eyes, yada, whatever.

But there was no hum.

Inside me was silence.

I was the perfect titan.

I was a titan you could take home to your mother.

All the colors were the same, and I was no longer having any fun.

And it was my life.

It was all I did.

I was the hum, and the hum was me.

So what do you do when the thing you do,

the work you love, starts to taste like dust?

ကျွန်မရဲ့နှလုံးသားရဲ့ သီချင်းရပ်သွားရင် တိတ်ဆိတ်မှုထဲမှာ ကျွန်မ ရှင်ကျန်နိုင်မလား။

And then my Southern waitress toddler asks me a question.

I'm on my way out the door, I'm late, and she says,

There's nothing special about it.

We play, and we're joined by her sisters,

and there's a lot of laughing,

and I give a dramatic reading from the book Everybody Poops.

And yet, it is extraordinary,

All that exists are sticky fingers

and gooey kisses and tiny voices and crayons

It's all peace and simplicity.

The air is so rare in this place for me that I can barely breathe.

I can barely believe I'm breathing.

And I am happy.

and a rush of energy comes.

And it's not instantaneous, but it happens, it does happen.

I feel it.

A hum creeps back.

Not at full volume, barely there,

it's quiet, and I have to stay very still to hear it, but it is there.

Not the hum, but a hum.

And now I feel like I know a very magical secret.

Well, let's not get carried away.

I have forgotten what the real hum is.

The hum is not power and the hum is not work-specific.

The hum is joy-specific.

The real hum is love-specific.

The hum is the electricity that comes from being excited by life.

The real hum is confidence and peace.

but maybe God was whispering the wrong words,

because which one of the gods was telling me I was the titan?

It's just love.

We could all use a little more love,

The truth is incredibly humbling and humiliating to face.

I don't like playing.

I work all the time because I like working.

I blow bubbles and they pop them.

And I feel stiff and delirious and confused most of the time.

I itch for my cell phone always.

But it is OK.

My tiny humans show me how to live and the hum of the universe fills me up.

I play and I play until I begin to wonder

why we ever stop playing in the first place.

My two- and four-year-old only ever want to play with me

for about 15 minutes or so

before they think to themselves they want to do something else.

It's an amazing 15 minutes, but it's 15 minutes.

If I'm not a ladybug or a piece of candy, I'm invisible after 15 minutes.

လောင်စာ ဖြစ်ဖို့မလိုဘူး။

the place where life feels more good than not good.

ဘဝက မကောင်းတာထက် ကောင်းတာ ပိုခံစားတဲ့ နေရာပါ။

It's not about playing with your kids,

ဒါက ကလေးတွေနဲ့ ကစားတာ မဟုတ်ဘူး၊

it's about joy.

ဒါက ပျော်ရွှင်မှုပါ။

It's about playing in general.

သာမန် ကစားတာပါ။

Give yourself the 15 minutes.

ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကို ၁၅ မိနစ် အချိန်ပေးပါ။

Find what makes you feel good.

ကိုယ့်ကို နေလို့ကောင်းစေတာကို ရှာဖွေပါ။

Just figure it out and play in that arena.

ဒါကို တွက်ဆပြီး ဒီကွင်းထဲမှာ ကစားရုံပါ။

I'm not perfect at it. In fact, I fail as often as I succeed,

ဒီမှာ ကျွန်မက အကောင်းဆုံမဟုတ်ဘူး၊ တကယ်မှာ အောင်မြင်သလို မကြာခဏ ကျရှုံးပါတယ်။

seeing friends, reading books, staring into space.

မိတ်ဆွေတွေကို တွေ့ဆုံတာ၊ စာအုပ်တွေ ဖတ်တာ အာကာသထဲ ငေးကြည့်တာ၊

"Wanna play?" starts to become shorthand for indulging myself

"ကစားမလား" ဟာ ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကို အလိုလိုက်ဖို့ အတိုကောက်ဖြစ်လာတယ်၊

in ways I'd given up on right around the time I got my first TV show,

ကျွန်မရဲ့ ဦးဆုံး တီဗွီပွဲရတဲ့ အချိန် တစ်ဝိုက်က စွန့်လွှတ်ခဲ့သလိုပေါ့။

right around the time I became a titan-in-training,

အထင်ကရ သင်တန်းသား ဖြစ်လာခဲ့ချိန်လောက်ကပေါ့၊

right around the time I started competing with myself for ways unknown.

15 minutes? What could be wrong with giving myself my full attention

for 15 minutes?

ပေးတာ ဘာမှား သွားမှာမို့လဲ။

Turns out, nothing.

ဘာမှ ဖြစ်မသွားပါဘူး။

The very act of not working has made it possible for the hum to return,

အလုပ်မလုပ်ခြင်းရဲ့ လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်စင်စစ်က "ဟင်" ပြန်လာဖို့ ဖြစ်အောင်လုပ်ပေးတာပါ။

as if the hum's engine could only refuel while I was away.

ကိုယ် အဝေးရောက်နေတုန်း "ဟင်" အင်ဂျင် လောင်စာပြန်ဖြည်နိုင်လိုပေါ့။

Work doesn't work without play.

အလုပ်ဟာ ကစားတာမပါပဲ အလုပ်မလုပ်ဘူးလေ။

It takes a little time, but after a few months,

အချိန်နည်းနည်းလေး လိုပေမဲ့ လအနည်းငယ်ကြာပြီးနောက်မှာ

one day the floodgates open

တစ်နေ့ ရေလွှဲပေါက် ပွင့်လာပြီး

and there's a rush, and I find myself standing in my office

ကမန်းကတန်းနဲ့ ရုံးထဲမှာ ရပ်မိလျက်သား ဖြစ်နေတယ်၊

filled with an unfamiliar melody, full on groove inside me,

မကြားဖူးတဲ့ တေးသွားတွေပြည့်လို့ ကိုယ်တွင်းမှာ အပြည့်အဝ လှိမ့်ဝင်လာတယ်၊

and around me, and it sends me spinning with ideas,

ပြီး အနားမှာ၊ ဒါက ကျွန်မကို စိတ်ကူးမျိုးစုံ ပို့ပေးတယ်။

and the humming road is open, and I can drive it and drive it,

"ဟင်" လမ်းမ ပွင့်သွားပြီး ဒါကို မောင်းနိုင်၊ မောင်းလိုက်တယ်၊

and I love working again.

ပြီးတော့ အလုပ်ကို ပြန်နှစ်သက်သွားတယ်။

But now, I like that hum, but I don't love that hum.

အခုတော့ အဲဒီ"ဟင်"ကို ကြိုက်တယ်၊ ချစ်တော့မချစ်ဘူးပေါ့။

I don't need that hum.

အဲဒီ"ဟင်" မလိုအပ်ဘူး။

I am not that hum. That hum is not me,

ကျွန်မက အဲဒီ"ဟင်" မဟုတ်၊ အဲဒီ"ဟင်"က ကျွန်မ မဟုတ်ဘူး။

not anymore.

မဟုတ်တော့ဘူး။

I am bubbles and sticky fingers and dinners with friends.

ကျွန်မဟာ ပူဖောင်းတွေ၊ စေးကပ်နေတဲ့ လက်ချောင်းတွေ မိတ်ဆွေတွေနဲ့ ညစာတွေပါ။

I am that hum.

ကျွန်မက အဲဒီ"ဟင်"ပါ။

Life's hum.

ဘဝရဲ့"ဟင်"ပါ။

Love's hum.

ချစ်ခြင်းရဲ့"ဟင်"ပါ။

Work's hum is still a piece of me, it is just no longer all of me,

အလုပ်ရဲ့ "ဟင်"က တစ်စိတ်တစ်ပိုင်းရှိဆဲပါ၊ အကုန်လုံးတော့ မဟုတ်တော့ပါဘူး။

and I am so grateful.

ပြီးတော့ ကျေးဇူးအရမ်းတင်ပါတယ်။

And I don't give a crap about being a titan,

အထင်ကရဖြစ်ခြင်းကို ကျွန်မ ရှော်ပစ်တာ မဟုတ်ပါ

because I have never once seen a titan play Red Rover, Red Rover.

အကြောင်းက Red Rover ကစားတဲ့ အထင်ကရ တစ်ခါမှ မမြင်ဖူးလို့ပါ။

I said yes to less work and more play, and somehow I still run my world.

အလုပ်လျှော့လုပ်ပြီး ပိုကစားဖို့ သဘောတူ လိုက်ပြီး ကျွန်မ ကမ္ဘာကို လည်ပတ်ဆဲပါ။

My brain is still global. My campfires still burn.

ကျွန်မ ဦးနှောက်က ကျယ်ပြန့်ဆဲ၊ ကျွန်မ မီးပုံက လောင်ကျွမ်းဆဲ၊

The more I play, the happier I am, and the happier my kids are.

ပိုကစားလေ၊ ကျွန်မ ပိုပျော်လာလေ၊ ကလေးတွ ပိုပျော်လာလေ၊

The more I play, the more I feel like a good mother.

ပိုကစားလေ၊ မိခင်ကောင်း တစ်ယောက်လို ပိုခံစားရလေ၊

The more I play, the freer my mind becomes.

awkward, brand new,

alive non-titan feels like me.

အသက်ရှင်တဲ့ ဘယ်အထင်ကရမှ ကျွန်မလို မခံစားရဘူး။

The more I feel that hum, the more I know who I am.

ဒီ"ဟင်"ကို ပိုခံစားရလေ၊ ကျွန်မဘယ်သူဆိုတာ ပိုသိလေပါ။

I'm a writer, I make stuff up, I imagine.

ကျွန်မက စာရေးဆရာ၊ ဇာတ်လမ်း ထွင်တယ်၊ စိတ်ကူးယဉ်တယ်။

That part of the job, that's living the dream.
