So a while ago, I tried an experiment.

The Southern waitress asked me to play with her one evening

when I was on my way somewhere, and I said, "Yes."

And that yes was the beginning of a new way of life for my family.

I work a lot, very hard, and I love it.

When I'm hard at work, when I'm deep in it,

there is no other feeling.

For me, my work is at all times building a nation out of thin air.

It is creative and mechanical and exhausting and exhilarating

and cruel and judicious,

and what makes it all so good is the hum.

There is some kind of shift inside me when the work gets good.

A hum begins in my brain,

and it grows and it grows and that hum sounds like the open road,

and I could drive it forever.

And a lot of people, when I try to explain the hum,

they assume that I'm talking about the writing,

that my writing brings me joy.

And don't get me wrong, it does.

But the hum --

it wasn't until I started making television

that I started working, working and making

and building and creating and collaborating,

that I discovered this thing, this buzz, this rush, this hum.

The hum is more than writing.

The hum is action and activity. The hum is a drug.

And when you have a hum like that,

you can't help but strive for greatness.

Or, maybe it's called being a workaholic.

Maybe it's called genius.

Maybe it's called ego.

자존심일 수도 있겠죠.

Maybe it's just fear of failure.

그저 실패에 대한 두려움일 수도 있고요.

I don't know.

잘 모르겠습니다.

I just know that I'm not built for failure,

그저 전 실패라는 것은 인정하지 않는다는 것만 알고 있고

and I just know that I love the hum.

그 "험"을 사랑한다는 것만 압니다.

I just know that I want to tell you I'm a titan,

and I know that I don't want to question it.

But here's the thing:

the more successful I become,

the more work there is to do,

The more I work to be successful,

And what did I say about work?

The nation I'm building, the marathon I'm running,

the troops, the canvas, the high note, the hum,

Now, my three daughters are used to the truth

I stopped loving work. I couldn't restart the engine.

I was doing the same things I always did, all the same titan work,

All the colors were the same, and I was no longer having any fun.

And it was my life.

And I'm just about to say no, when I realize two things.

And now I feel like I know a very magical secret.

I wish it were that easy,

The truth is incredibly humbling and humiliating to face.

진실을 대한다는 것은 대단히 겸허하고 부끄러운 일입니다.

I don't like playing.

저는 노는 걸 좋아하지 않아요.

I work all the time because I like working.

일하는 것을 좋아하기 때문에 항상 일만 하죠.

I like working more than I like being at home.

집에 있는 것 보다도 일하는 것을 더 좋아합니다.

Facing that fact is incredibly difficult to handle,

because what kind of person likes working more than being at home?

TV 쇼 노래를 부르고 공을 차고 놀기도 합니다.

I blow bubbles and they pop them.

제가 비누방울을 불면 아이들이 터뜨리죠.

And I feel stiff and delirious and confused most of the time.

그동안 저는 주로 뻣뻣하고 정신이 혼미한 혼란 상태에 있습니다.

I itch for my cell phone always.

항상 제 핸드폰을 찾고 있죠.

But it is OK.

하지만 괜찮아요.

My tiny humans show me how to live and the hum of the universe fills me up.

아이들이 제대로 사는 법을 가르쳐 주고 우주의 "험"이 저를 가득 채웁니다.

I play and I play until I begin to wonder

한참을 계속 놀다보면 저는 의아해 합니다.

why we ever stop playing in the first place.

You have to force them to bathe. But you can do 15 minutes.

아이들 목욕도 시켜야 하지만 15분은 낼 수 있습니다.

My kids are my happy place, they're my world,

아이들은 행복의 장소이자 제 모든 것입니다.

but it doesn't have to be your kids,

하지만 꼭 여러분의 아이들이 아니어도 괜찮아요.

"험"을 북돋는 근원이,

the fuel that feeds your hum,

the place where life feels more good than not good.

I'm not perfect at it. In fact, I fail as often as I succeed,

"Wanna play?" starts to become shorthand for indulging myself

in ways I'd given up on right around the time I got my first TV show,

그것을 그만 둔 건 첫 TV 방송을 맡았을 즈음,

right around the time I became a titan-in-training,

타이탄이 되기 위해 노력하기 시작하고

right around the time I started competing with myself for ways unknown.

알지 못하는 것들을 위해 제 자신과 경쟁하기 시작한 즈음이죠.

15 minutes? What could be wrong with giving myself my full attention

완벽히 집중하는 데 나쁠 게 뭐가 있나요?

for 15 minutes?

Turns out, nothing.

아무것도 없습니다.

The very act of not working has made it possible for the hum to return,

일을 하지 않음으로써 다시금 "험"을 느낄 수 있었습니다.

as if the hum's engine could only refuel while I was away.

마치 일을 하지 않아야만 재충전이 될 수 있듯이요.

Work doesn't work without play.

일이라는 것은 노는 게 없이는 불가능합니다.

It takes a little time, but after a few months,

시간은 조금 걸리겠지만,

one day the floodgates open

몇 달 후에는 수문이 열리고

and there's a rush, and I find myself standing in my office

무언가 몰아쳐 오는 걸 느끼며 저는 사무실에서

filled with an unfamiliar melody, full on groove inside me,

익숙하지 않은 멜로디와 리듬이 제 안에, 제 주변에 있는 것을 느끼고

and around me, and it sends me spinning with ideas,

그것은 새로운 아이디어로 저를 핑 돌게 만듭니다.

and the humming road is open, and I can drive it and drive it,

"험"의 길은 열리고 저는 그 곳을 끝없이 운전해 갑니다.

and I love working again.

또 다시 일을 사랑하게 되죠.

But now, I like that hum, but I don't love that hum.

그 "험"이 좋긴 하지만 이젠 그것을 사랑하지는 않습니다.

I don't need that hum.

꼭 필요하지도 않고요.

I am not that hum. That hum is not me,

전 그 "험"이 아니고, 그 "험"도 제가 아니죠.

not anymore.

더 이상은요.

I am bubbles and sticky fingers and dinners with friends.

저는 비누방울이고 끈적거리는 손이며 친구들과의 저녁식사입니다.

I am that hum.

전 그런 "험"입니다.

Life's hum.

인생의 "험".

Love's hum.

사랑의 "험".

Work's hum is still a piece of me, it is just no longer all of me,

일의 "험"은 아직 저의 일부이지만 제 전부는 아닙니다.

and I am so grateful.

And I don't give a crap about being a titan,

타이탄이 되는 것에 신경쓰지 않아요.

because I have never once seen a titan play Red Rover, Red Rover.

한번도 타이탄이 술래잡기를 하며 노는 건 본 적이 없거든요.

I said yes to less work and more play, and somehow I still run my world.

덜 일하고 더 노는 것에 예스를 했지만 전 아직 제 세상을 지휘합니다.

My brain is still global. My campfires still burn.

제 두뇌는 세계로 뻗어나가고 있고 모닥불은 아직 타고 있죠.

The more I play, the happier I am, and the happier my kids are.

더 많이 놀수록 전 더 행복해지고 아이들 역시 더 행복해집니다.

The more I play, the more I feel like a good mother.

더 많이 놀수록 제가 더 나은 엄마가 되는 기분입니다.

The more I play, the freer my mind becomes.

더 많이 놀수록 제 마음은 더 자유로워지고

The more I play, the better I work.

더욱더 일을 열심히 하게 됩니다.

The more I play, the more I feel the hum,

더 많이 놀수록 "험"을 더 느낄 수 있고

the nation I'm building, the marathon I'm running,

제가 창조하는 국가, 제가 달리고 있는 마라톤,

the troops, the canvas, the high note, the hum, the hum,

군대, 캔버스, 높은 음, "험", "험",

the other hum, the real hum,

또 다른 "험", 진짜 "험",

life's hum.

인생의 "험"을 느낍니다.

The more I feel that hum,

그것을 더 많이 느낄수록

the more this strange, quivering, uncocooned,

이 낯선, 떨고 있는, 보호받지 않은,

awkward, brand new,

어색한, 완전히 새로운

alive non-titan feels like me.

타이탄이 아닌 이 사람이 저처럼 느껴집니다.

The more I feel that hum, the more I know who I am.

"험"을 더 느낄수록 제 자신이 누구인지 알게 되죠.

I'm a writer, I make stuff up, I imagine.

저는 작가이고 창조를 하며, 상상을 합니다.

That part of the job, that's living the dream.

바로 그것들이 제 꿈을 실현해 나가는 방법입니다.

That's the dream of the job.

그게 바로 꿈의 직업이라는 것입니다.

Because a dream job should be a little bit dreamy.

꿈의 직업이라는 건 어느 정도는 공상적이어야 하니까요.
