I have a confession.

ကျွန်မမှာ ဝန်ခံစရာတစ်ခုရှိတယ်။

I have been in an affair

အသက် ၁၇ နှစ် ကတည်းက

since I was 17 years old.

ကိစ္စတစ်ရပ်မှာပါဝင်ခဲ့တယ်၊

I wish I could talk about butterflies in my stomach

when I think about this affair,

but I cannot.

I wish I could talk about sweet words spoken

ပြောလိုက်တဲ့ ချိုသာတဲ့ စကားလုံးတွေ (သို့) ဒီကိစ္စကနေ ရလိုက်တဲ့

or gifts that I received

လက်ဆောင်တွေ အကြောင်း

from this affair,

ပြောနိုင်ချင်လိုက်တာ၊

but I cannot.

ဒါပေမဲ့ မတတ်နိုင်ဘူး။

All I can tell you about is the aftermath,

ဒီအကြောင်း ရှင်တို့ကို ပြောနိုင်တာဆိုလို့ နောက်ဆက်တွဲ

about days I spent constantly asking:

"ဘာလို့၊ ဘာဖြစ်လို့ ငါဖြစ်ရတာလဲ"လို့

Why, why, why me?

အဆက်မပြတ်မေးတဲ့ နေ့တွေ အ​ကြောင်းပါ။

I remember how it all began.

ဒါအားလုံး ဘယ်လို စခဲ့တာကို မှတ်မိတယ်။

I was in my final year of high school,

ကျွန်မက အထက်တန်း နောက်ဆုံးနှစ်မှာ ဖြစ်ပြီး

and my class had just won in sports,

ကျွန်မ အတန်းက အားကစားမှာ နိုင်တာကြောင့်

so we were singing and dancing and hugging each other.

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ၊ သီးချင်းဆိုကြ၊ ကခုန်ကြ အချင်းချင်း ဖက်နေကြတာပေါ့။

I went and took a shower.

ကျွန်မ ရေသွားချိုးတယ်၊

Then I went for dinner.

ပြီးတော့ ညစာ သွားစားတယ်။

And when I sat down to eat,

စားဖို့ ထိုင်လိုက်တဲ့အခါ

my teeth started chattering,

ကျွန်မ သွားချင်းရိုက်ပြီး တုန်နေတော့

and so I couldn't put the spoon in my mouth.

ဇွန်းကို ပါးစပ်ထဲ ထည့်လို့ မရခဲ့ဘူး။

I rushed to the nurse's office,

ကျွန်မ သူနာပြုရုံးခန်းကို အပြေးသွာခဲ့ပြီး

and because I couldn't talk, I just pointed at my mouth.

စကားမပြောနိုင်တာကြောင့် ပါးစပ်ကို ထိုးပြခဲ့တယ်။

She didn't know what was happening,

သူနာပြုက ဘာဖြစ်နေမှန်းမသိတော့

so she told me to lie down,

ကျွန်မကို လှဲခိုင်းတယ်။

and it worked --

ဒါက အလုပ်ဖြစ်တယ်၊

after a few minutes, the chattering stopped.

မိနစ်အနည်းငယ်မှာ သွားချင်းရိုက်တာ ရပ်သွားတယ်။

I was about to dash out, and she told me --

ကျွန်မက လစ်တော့မယ်အလုပ်မှာ သူမ မရဘူးဆိုပြီး

no, she insisted -- that I go up to the dormitories to sleep.

ကျွန်မ အိပ်ဖို့ အဆောင်ပေါ် တက်သွားဖို့ အတင်းပြောတယ်။

Here I was in my final year of high school,

ဒီမှာ ကျွန်မ အထက်တန်း နောက်ဆုံးနှစ်ကပါ၊

just a few months from doing my end of high school exams

အထက်တန်း စာမေးပွဲတွေဖြေပြီးစ လအနည်းငယ်နဲ့

and a few days from doing a set of exams we call here in Kenya "mocks,"

ကင်ညာမှာ "အစမ်းစာမေးပွဲ" ခေါ်တဲ့ အတန်းတင် စာမေးပွဲတွေအတွက်

which are somehow meant to gauge how prepared one is for the final exams.

တစ်နည်းတစ်ဖုံ ပြင်ဆင်ပုံကို တိုင်းတာတဲ့ စာမေးပွဲတစ်ခုကို ဖြေပြီး ရက်အနည်းငယ်မှာပါ၊

There is no way I was going to sleep

ကျွန်မ အိပ်ပျော်ဖို့ နည်းလမ်းမရှိပဲနဲ့

and let a set of exams mock me.

စာမေးပွဲက ကျွန်မကို လှောင်စေတာပါ။

I went to class, sat down,

အတန်းကိုသွားတယ်၊ ထိုင်ချလိုက်တယ်၊

took my Kenyan history notes,

Kenyan သမိုင်းမှတ်စုကို ထုတ်လိုက်တယ်၊

and there I was, down Kenyan coastal town,

ကျွန်မက အဲဒီ Kenyan ကမ်းရိုးတန်းမြို့မှာ

with the great Mekatilili wa Menza,

ကြီးကျယ်လှတဲ့ Mekatilili wa Menza နဲ့လေ

the Giriama woman who led her people against British colonial rule.

ဗြိတိသျှ ကိုလိုနီ အုပ်ချုပ်ရေး ဆန့်ကျင်ရန် လူတွေကို ဦးဆောင်တဲ့ Giriama အမျိုးသမီးလေ

Then, without any notice,

ဒီနောက် ဘာမှ သတိမထားမိပဲ

my left hand started jerking,

ဘယ်ဘက်လက်က ဆတ်ကနဲ တုန်လာတယ်၊

and it was as if I was marking imaginary papers.

စိတ်ကူးယဉ် စာရွက်တွေမှာ အမှတ်အသား လုပ်နေသလို မျိုးပေါ့။

In and out it went,

ဆက်တိုက်ဖြစ်နေပြီး

and with every stroke, one by one,

တစ်ခုပြီးတစ်ခု အချက်တိုင်းမှာ

my classmates stopped concentrating on their reading

အတန်းဖော်တွေရဲ့ စာဖတ်တာ အာရုံပျက်သွားပြီး

and started looking at me.

ကျွန်မကို စကြည့်ကြတယ်။

And I tried really hard to stop it,

ဒါကို ရပ်ဖို့ အတော့ကို ကြိုးစားပေမဲ့

but I couldn't,

ရပ်လို့မရခဲ့ဘူး၊

because it had a life of its own.

အကြောင်းက ဒါက သူဘာသာ လှုပ်နေတာလေ။

And then, when it was sure everybody was looking at us,

ဒီနောက်မှာ လူတိုင်းက ကျွန်မတို့ကို ကြည့်နေတာ သေချာသွားတော့

in its final show and official introduction,

၎င်းရဲ့နောက်ဆုံး ပြကွက်နဲ့ တရားဝင် မိတ်ဆက်မှာ

I had my first full-blown seizure,

ကျွန်မ ပထမဆုံး လုံးလုံး အကြောဆွဲသွားတယ်။

which was the beginning of what has been a 15-year-long affair.

ဒါက ကျွန်မရဲ့ ၁၅ နှစ်ကြာ ကိစ္စရဲ့ အစပါ။။

Seizures are the trademark characteristic for most types of epilepsy,

အကြောဆွဲတာတွေဟာ ဝက်ရူးပြန်အမျိုးအစား အများစုရဲ့ မူပိုင် လက္ခဏာဖြစ်ပြီး

and every first-ever seizure needs to be assessed by a doctor

ပထမအကြောဆွဲတာတိုင်းဟာ ဝက်ရူးပြန်တာလား ဒါမှမဟုတ်

to determine if one has epilepsy

အခြားတစ်ခုခုရဲ့ ရောဂါလက္ခဏာလား ဆိုတာ ဆုံးဖြတ်ဖို့

or if it's a symptom of something else.

ဆရာဝန်ရဲ့ အကဲဖြတ်တာလိုပါတယ်။

In my case, it was confirmed that I had epilepsy.

ကျွန်မရဲ့ ရောဂါမှာ ဝက်ရူးပြန်တာလို့ အတည်ပြုခဲ့တယ်။

I spent a large chunk of my time in hospital and at home,

ကျွန်မဘဝရဲ့ အချိန်အများကြီးကို ဆေးရုံနဲ့ အိမ်မှာ ကုန်ဆုံးခဲ့ပြီး

and only went back to do my final exams.

အတန်းတင် စာမေးပွဲတွေမှပဲ ပြန်ဖြေခဲ့တယ်။

I had seizures in between papers,

စာရွက်တွေကြားမှာ အကြောဆွဲနေပေမဲ့

but managed to get good enough grades

University of Nairobi က အာမခံ ကိန်းဆိုင်ရာ

to be admitted for an actuarial science degree

အာမခံ ကိန်းဆိုင်ရာ သိပ္ပံဘွဲ့အတွက် ဝင်ခွင့်ရဖို့ အဆင့်ကောင်းတွေ

at the University of Nairobi.

ရဖို့တော့ လုပ်နိုင်ခဲ့တယ်။

Unfortunately, I had to drop out in my second year.

I didn't have good enough coping skills

and a support community around me.

ကိုယ့်ဘေးမှာ ထောက်ပံတဲ့ အသိုက်အဝန်း မရှိဘူး

I was lucky enough to get a job,

အလုပ်တစ်ခုရတာ ကံကောင်းတယ်ဆိုပေမဲ့

but I was fired from that job when I had a seizure in the workplace.

အလုပ်ခွင်မှာ အကြောဆွဲတဲ့အခါ အလုပ်က ထုတ်တာခံလိုက်ရတယ်။

So I found myself in a space

ဒီတော့ ဒါက ဘာကြောင့် ငါ့ကိုမှ ဖြစ်တာလဲလို့

where I was constantly asking myself

ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကို အမြဲမေးမေးနေတဲ့

why this had to happen to me.

နေရာတစ်ခုမှာ ရောက်ရှိသွားတယ်။

I lived in denial for a long time,

ငြင်းပယ်မှုထဲမှာ အကြာကြီးနေခဲ့ပြီး

and the denial was maybe because of the things that had happened,

ငြင်းပယ်မှုကလည်း ဖြစ်ပျက်ခဲ့တဲ့ အရာတွေကြောင့် ဖြစ်နိုင်ပါတယ်၊

dropping out of school and being fired from my job.

ကျောင်းထွက်လိုက်ရတယ်၊ အလုပ်ဖြုတ်ခံရတယ်တို့ပေါ့။

Or maybe it was because of the things I had heard about epilepsy

ဒါမှမဟုတ် ဝက်ရူပြန်အကြောင်းနဲ့ ဝက်ရူးပြန်ရောဂါနဲ့ ရှင်သန်သူတွေအကြောင်း

and about people living with epilepsy:

ကိုယ်ကြားမိတာ တွေကြောင့် ဖြစ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

that they would never live on their own;

သူတို့ဟာ ဘယ်တော့မှ ကိုယ့်ဘာသာ နေလို့မရတာ၊

that they would never travel on their own

ဘယ်တော့မှ ကိုယ့်ဘာသာ ခရီးထွက်လို့မရတာ၊

or even get work;

အလုပ်တောင် သွားလို့မရတာ၊

that they were outcasts,

သူတို့ဟာ အပယ်ခံတွေ၊

with a spirit in them that they needed to be delivered from.

ကယ်တင်ဖို့ လိုတယ်ဆိုတဲ့ စိတ်နဲ့လူတွေပေါ့။

And so the more I thought about these things,

ဒါနဲ့ ဒီအရာတွေကို ပိုတွေးလေ

the more my seizures became,

အကြောပိုဆွဲလေဖြစ်ပြီး

and I spent days with my legs locked,

ကျွန်မ ခြေထောက်တွေကို သော့ခတ်ပြီး နေ့တွေကုန်ဆုံးခဲ့တယ်၊

my speech became blurred

ကျွန်မ စကားတွေဟာ မပီမသဖြစ်လာပြီး

and on days on end, this is how I'd be.

နေ့စဉ် မရပ်မနားပဲ ကျွန်မဖြစ်မယ့်ပုံပါ။

Two or three days after a seizure,

အကြောဆွဲပြီး နှစ်ရက် နှစ်ရက်၊ သုံးရက်အကြာ

my head and my hand would still be twitching.

ကျွန်မ ခေါင်းနဲ့ လက်ဟာ ဆန့်တငင်ငင် ဖြစ်တုန်းပါ။

I felt lost,

ဆုံးရှုံးမှုကို ခံစားလိုက်ရတယ်၊

like I'd lost everything,

အရာတိုင်း ဆုံးရှုံးတာမျိုးဖြစ်ပြီး

and sometimes,

တစ်ခါတစ်ခါမှာ

even the will to live.

ဆက်လက် ရှင်သန်ဖို့ စိတ်ဆန္ဒတောင်ပါ။

(Sigh)

I had so much frustration in me.

ကျွန်မမှာ ခံပြင်းမှုတွေ အများကြီး ရှိခဲ့တယ်။

And so I started writing,

ဒါနဲ့ စာစရေးခဲ့တယ်၊

because the people around me didn't have answers

အကြောင်းက ကိုယ့်ဝန်းကျင်က လူတွေမှာ

to the questions that I had.

ကိုယ့်မေးခွန်းတွေအတွက် အဖြေတွေမရှိလို့ပါ

And so I wrote my fears

ဒါနဲ့ကျွန်မရဲ့ ကြောက်စိတ်တွေနဲ့

and my doubts.

သံသယတွေကို ရေးခဲ့တယ်။

I wrote about my good days and my bad days and my really ugly days,

ကျွန်မရဲ့ နေ့ကောင်းတွေ၊ နေ့ဆိုးတွေ၊ တကယ့် ရုပ်ဆိုးတဲ့ နေ့တွေအကြောင်း ရေးခဲ့ပြီး

and I shared them on a blog.

ဘလော့ဂ်တစ်ခုမှာ မျှဝေခဲ့တယ်။

And before long,

သိပ်မကြာခင်မှာပဲ

I began to be seen and heard by people who had epilepsy

ဝက်ရူးပြန်ရောဂါရှိသူတွေ၊ သူတို့မိသားစုတွေ၊

and their families,

ရောဂါမပေါ်သေးတဲ့

and even those who did not have the diagnosis.

လူတွေဆီကတောင် စတင် မြင်ရ၊ ကြားလာရတယ်။

And I moved from that girl who constantly asked why me

ကျွန်မဟာ ဘာလို့ ငါဖြစ်ရတာလဲလို့ အမြဲမေးတဲ့ ကောင်မလေးကနေ

to one who not only self-advocates,

ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကို အားပေးတာ တင်မက အသံတွေကို

but does it for those who are yet to find their voices.

ရှာမတွေ့သေးသူတွေ အတွက်ပါ အားပေးတဲ့သူ အဖြစ် ပြောင်းသွားတယ်။

My seizures are greatly reduced, from two to three times a day,

ကျွန်မရဲ့ အကြောဆွဲတွေဟာ တစ်ရက်ကို နှစ်ကြိမ်၊ သုံးကြိမ်ကနေ

to sometimes two to three times in one year.

တစ်ခါတစ်ရံ တစ်နှစ်နှစ်ကြိမ်၊ သုံးကြိမ်ထိ အတော်ကြီး လျော့ကျသွာတယ်။

I went on --

ကျွန်မ ရှေ့ဆက်ခဲ့တယ်။

I went on to employ five people,

ကင်ညာရဲ့ ပထမဦးဆုံး အခမဲ့ စိတ်ဆိုင်ရာကျန်းမာရေးနဲ့

when I began what was Kenya's first

ဝက်ရူးပြန်ရောဂါ ပံ့ပိုးမှုလိုင်း စတင်တော့

free mental health and epilepsy support line.

လူငါးဦးကို ဆက်ခန့်ခဲ့တယ်။

And I travel --

ခရီးထွက်တယ်။

And I travel to speak about my affair,

ကျွန်မ ကိစ္စအကြောင်း ပြောဖို့ ခရီးထွက်တယ်၊

all these things that I had been told

ကျွန်မလို့ လူတွေ အပြောခံရတာက

people like me living with epilepsy could never be able to do.

ဝက်ရူးပြန် ရောဂါနဲ့ ရှင်သန်သူတွေဟာ ဒါတွေ အားလုံးကို ဘယ်တော့မှ မလုပ်နိုင်ဘူးဆိုတာပါ။

Every year, a population as big as 80 percent of Nairobi

နှစ်တိုင်း Nairobi ရဲ့လူဦးရေ ၈၀ ရာခိုင်နှုန်း လောက်ကြီးတောင်

gets diagnosed with epilepsy

ကမ္ဘာတစ်လွှားက

across the globe.

ဝက်ရူးပြန်ရောဂါ တွေ့ရှိရပါတယ်။

And they, like me,

ကျွန်မလိုပဲ သူတို့ဟာ

go through the emotions of stigma and exclusion.

အရှက်ရခြင်းနဲ့ ချန်လှပ်ခံရခြင်းရဲ့ စိတ်ခံစားမှုတွေကို ကျော်ဖြတ်ခဲ့ရပါတယ်။

And so I have made it my life journey

ဒါနဲ့ ဒါကို ကျွန်မရဲ့ ဘဝခရီးအဖြစ် ဖန်တီးခဲ့တယ်၊

to keep these conversations going,

ဒီပြောဆိုမှုတွေဆက်ဖြစ်ဖို့၊

and I keep confessing about my affair

ကျွန်မရဲ့ ကိစ္စကို ဆက်လက်ဝန်ခံဖို့

so that those people who do not have the diagnosis

ရောဂါတွေ့ရှိချက်ကို မသိသူတွေဟာ

might know and might have a constant reminder

ကျွန်မတို့လို လူတွေနဲ့ တွေဆုံတာ ကောင်းတယ်၊

that it is alright to engage with people like us,

အရှက်ရခြင်းနဲ့ ချန်လှပ်ခံရခြင်းရဲ့ နံရံတွေကို ဆွဲချသရွေ့

that as long as they pull down the walls of stigma and exclusion,

၎င်းတွေလိုပဲ ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ဘဝက ကိုယ့်ဆီ ပစ်ပေါက်သမျှကို

that we, just like them,

ယူနိုင်စွမ်းရှိနိုင်တယ်ဆိုတာ

can be able to take anything life throws at us.

သိဖို့နဲ့ အမြဲ နှိုးဆောင်ချက် ဖြစ်လောက်အောင်ပါ။
