I was eight years old.

ကျွန်မ အသက်ရှစ်နှစ်တုန်းကပါ။

I remember that day clearly

ကျွန်မ အဲဒီနေ့ကို ကောင်းကောင်းမှတ်မိနေတာ

like it happened just yesterday.

မနေ့က ဖြစ်ပျက်ခဲ့သလိုပါပဲ။

My mother is a bidi roller.

ကျွန်မအမေက bidi လိပ်သူပါ။

She hand-rolls country cigarettes to sustain our family.

သူမဟာ ရိုးရာ စီးကရက်လိုဟာကို လက်နှင့် လိပ်လျက် မိသားစုကို ထောက်ပံ့ပါတယ်။

She is a hard worker

သူမဟာ လက်နဲ့ အလုပ်လုပ်ရပြီး

and spent 10 to 12 hours every day rolling bidis.

နေ့စဉ် bidi တွေကို ၁၀ မှ ၁၂ နာရီကြာ လိပ်ရင်း အချိန်ကုန်ပါတယ်။

That particular day she came home and showed me her bidi-rolling wage book.

အဲဒီနေ့ကျတော့ သူမဟာ သူမရဲ့ bidi လိပ်မှု လုပ်အားခစာအုပ်ကို ပြဖို့ ယူလာခဲ့တယ်။

She asked me how much money she has earned that week.

အဲဒီ ရက်သတ္တပတ် အတွက် သူမ ငွေဘယ်လောက် ရလဲ မေးပါတယ်။

I went through that book,

ကျွန်မ စာအုပ်ကို လေ့လာကြည့်တယ်၊

and what caught my eyes were her thumbprints on each page.

ကျွန်မ သတိထားမိတဲ့ အချက်က စာမျက်နှာ တိုင်းမှာ သူမရဲ့ လက်ဗွေနှိပ်ထားပုံပါ။

My mother has never been to school.

ကျွန်မ အမေဟာ ကျောင်းမတက်ခဲ့ဖူးပါ။

She uses her thumbprints instead of a signature

ဒီတော့ လက်မှတ်အစား သူမဟာ သူမရဲ့ ဝင်ငွေမှတ်တမ်း စာအုပ်ထဲမှာ

to keep a record of her earnings.

လက်ဗွေကိုပဲ နှိပ်ပေးရတယ်။

On that day, for some reason,

အဲဒီနေ့တွင် အကြောင်း တစ်ခုခုကြောင့်

I wanted to teach her how to hold a pen and write her name.

ကျွန်မဟာ ကလောင်ကို ကိုင်ပြီး သူမရဲ့ အမည်ကို ရေးတတ်အောင် သင်ပေးချင်ခဲ့တယ်။

She was reluctant at first.

အစပိုင်းတွင် သူမဟာ တွန့်ဆုတ်နေခဲ့တယ်။

She smiled innocently and said no.

သူမဟာ အပြစ်ကင်းစွာ ပြုံးပြလျက် ငြင်းပါတယ်။

But deep down, I was sure she wanted to give it a try.

ဒါပေမဲ့ သူမဟာ စစ်ကြည့်လိုချင်ခဲ့မှန်း ကျွန်မ ယုံကြည်မိတယ်။

With a little bit of perseverance and a lot of effort,

ဇွဲရှိရှိနဲ့ အတော်ကလေး ကြိုးစားလိုက်တဲ့ နောက်မှာ၊

we managed to write her name.

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ သူ့အမည်ကို ရေးနိုင်လာတယ်။

Her hands were trembling, and her face was beaming with pride.

သူ့လက်တွေ တုန်ရင်နေခဲ့ပေမဲ့ မျက်နှာကတော့ ၀င့်ကြွားနေပုံပါ။

သူမ အဲဒီလို ကိုယ့်အမည် ရေးနေတာကို ကျွန်မ စောင့်ကြည့်ခဲ့တာ

As I watched her do this,

for the first time in my life,

တစ်သက်မှာ တစ်ခါပါ၊

I had a priceless feeling:

ကျွန်မ စိတ်ထဲမှာအဖိုးမဖြတ်နိုင်တဲ့ ခံစားချက် ပေါ်လာခဲ့ပါတယ်-

that I could be of some use to this world.

ကျွန်မဟာ သူမကမ္ဘာကြီးထဲမှာ အသုံးဝင်နိုင်ပါကလား။

That feeling was very special,

အဲဒီခံစားချက်ဟာ အရမ်းကို ထူးခဲ့တယ်။

because I am not meant to be useful.

ကျွန်မ ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကို အသုံးဝင်တတ်မှန်း မသိခဲ့ပါ။

In rural India, girls are generally considered worthless.

အိန္ဒိယမှ ကျေးလက်နေ မိန်းကလေးတွေဟာ ဘာတန်ဖိုးမှ မရှိဘူးလို့ ယူဆခံကြရတယ်။

They're a liability or a burden.

သူတို့ဟာ ဝန်ထုပ်ဝန်ပိုးကြီး တစ်ခုလိုပါ။

If they are considered useful,

သူတို့ အသုံးဝင်တာကို ပြောရရင်

it is only to cook dishes, keep the house clean

ထမင်းဟင်း ချက်ပြုတ်ဖို့ အိမ်ကို သန့်စင်ထားဖို့နဲ့

or raise children.

ကလေးတွေ မွေးပေးဖို့ပါပဲ။

As a second daughter of my conservative Indian family,

ရှေးရိုးဆန်တဲ့ ကျွန်မရဲ့ အိန္ဒိယမိသားစု ထဲမှာ ဒုတိယ သမီးဖြစ်တာမို့၊

I was fairly clear from a very early age

ကျွန်မထံမနေပြီး ဘယ်သူမှာမှ ဘယ်တော့မှ ဘာတစ်ခုကိုမှ

that no one expected anything from me.

မျှော်လင့်မထားတာကို ငယ်စဉ် ကတည်းက သိပြီးသားပါ။

I was conditioned to believe that the three identities that defined me --

ကျွန်မ ယုံကြည်ခဲ့တဲ့ ကျွန်မဆိုင်ရာ လက္ခဏာ သုံးရပ်က-

poor village girl --

ဆင်းရဲတဲ့ ရွာသူလေး--

meant that I was to live a life of no voice and no choice.

အသံမရှိ ရွေးစရာ မရှိတဲ့ ဘဝမျိုးနဲ့ ကျွန်မ နေထိုင်ရမယ်လို့ ဆိုလိုပါတယ်။

These three identities forced me to think

အဲဒီလို လက္ခဏာရပ် သုံးခုက ကျွန်မ အတင်းအကြပ် စဉ်းစားလာစေတာက

that I should never have been born.

ငါမမွေးခဲ့ရင် ပိုကောင်းခဲ့မှာ။

Yet, I was.

တကယ်ပဲ၊ အဲဒီလို ထင်နေခဲ့တာ။

All throughout my childhood, as I rolled bidis alongside my mother,

ကျွန်မ ကလေးဘဝ တစ်လျှောက်လုံ ကျွန်မ မိခင်နှင့်အတူ bidi ကို လိပ်နေခဲ့ရင်း၊

I would wonder:

ကျွန်မ တွေးနေမိခဲ့တာက-

What did my future hold?

ကျွန်မရဲ့ အအနာဂတ်က ဘယ်လိုမျိုး ဖြစ်မလဲ။

I often asked my mother, with a lot of anxiety,

ကျွန်မဟာ စိုးရိမ်စွာဖြင့် မိခင်အား ခဏခဏ မေးကြည့်ခဲ့တယ်။

"Amma, will my life be different from yours?

"မေမေ၊ ကျွန်မဘဝဟာ မေမေဘဝနဲ့ ခြားနားမလား။

Will I have a chance to choose my life?

ကျွန်မဟာ ကျွန်မဘဝကို ရွေးချယ်ဖို့ အခွင့်အလမ်း ရမလား။

Will I go to college?"

ကျွန်မ ကောလိပ်ကို တက်နိုင်မလား။"

And she would reply back,

မေမေက ဖြေကြားလေ့ ရှိခဲ့တာက-

"ဦးစွာ အထက်တန်းကျောင်း ပြီးအောင် ကြိုးစားပါ။ "

"Try to finish high school first."

I am sure my mother did not mean to discourage me.

အမေဟာ ကျွန်မကို စိတ်ပျက်အောင် လုပ်လိုခဲ့တာ မဟုတ်တာ သေချာပါတယ်။

She only wanted me to understand

ကျွန်မရဲ့ အိပ်မက်တွေဟာ ကျွန်မတို့ ရွာထဲက ကလေးမလေး အတွက်

that my dreams might be too big for a girl in my village.

သိပ်ကြီးမားတာမျိုး ဖြစ်နိုင်တာကို သူမက ကျွန်မကို သတိပေးခဲ့ချင်တာပါ။

ကျွန်မ ၁၃ နှစ် အရွယ်မှာ Helen Keller ရဲ့ အတ္ထုပ္ပတ္တိကို တွေ့ရှိခဲ့ပါတယ်။

When I was 13, I found the autobiography of Helen Keller.

Helen ဟာ ကျွန်မကို လှုံ့ဆော်ပေးသူ ဖြစ်လာတယ်။

Helen became my inspiration.

I admired her indomitable spirit.

ကျွန်မဟာ သူမရဲ့ အနိုင်မခံ အရှုံးမပေးတဲ့ စိတ်ဓာတ်ကို ချီးကျူးမိတယ်။

I wanted to have a college degree like her,

သူမလိုပဲ ကျွန်မပါ ကောလိပ်ဒီဂရီ ကို ရယူလိုခဲ့တယ်။

so I fought with my father and my relatives to be sent to college,

ကျွန်မကို ကောလိပ်ကို ပို့ဖြစ်ရန် ကျွန်မ ဖခင်၊ ဆွေမျိုးတွေနှင့် တိုက်ပွဲဝင်ခဲ့ရတယ်၊

and it worked.

အဲဒါ အလုပ်ဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်။

During my final year of my undergraduate degree,

ကျွန်မရဲ့ ကောလိပ်ကျောင်း နောက်ဆုံး နှစ်မှာ၊

I desperately wanted to escape from being forced into marriage,

ကျွန်မကို အတင်းအကြပ် လက်ထပ်ခိုင်းတာကို ရှောင်ရှားဖို့ အားထုတ်နေခဲ့တယ်၊

so I applied to a fellowship program in Delhi,

ဒါကြောင့် ဒေလီမှာ သင်တန်းတက်ဖို့ လျှောက်ခဲ့တယ်၊

which is about 1,600 miles away from my village.

ကျွန်မရွာမှ မိုင် ၁၆၀၀ ဝယ်တဲ့ နေရာပါ။

In fact, I recall that the only way I could fill out the application

ကျွန်မ မှတ်မိသလောက် ကျွန်မရဲ့ လျှောက်လွှာကို ရေးဖြည့်နိုင်ခဲ့တာက

was during my commute to college.

ကောလိပ်ကျောင်း အသွားခရီး အတွင်းမှာပါ။

I did not have access to computers,

ကျွန်မဟာ ကွန်ပျူတာတွေကို မသုံးနိုင်ခဲ့ပါ။

so I had to borrow a college junior's cell phone.

အဲဒါနဲ့ ကောလိပ် ကျောင်းသား တစ်ယောက်ထံမှ ဆဲလ်ဖုန်းကို ယူသုံးခဲ့ရတယ်။

As a woman, I could not be seen with a cell phone,

အမျိုးသမီးဖြစ်နေလို့ ကျွန်မကို ဆဲလ်ဖုန်းနှင့် အတွေ့ခံမရခဲ့ဘူး။

so I used to huddle his phone under my shawl

ကျွန်မဟာ သူ့ဖုန်းကို ကျွန်မပုဝါရဲ့ အောက်မှာ ဝှက်သုံးရတယ်။

and type as slowly as possible

ပြီးတော့ တဖြည်းဖြည်းချင်း စာလုံးတွေကို ရိုက်ယူရတယ်။

to ensure that I would not be heard.

ဘယ်သူမှာမှ မကြားနိုင်ဖို့အတွက်ပါ။

အင်တာဗျူးတွေ အများကြီးကို ဖြတ်ကျော်ခဲ့ရတဲ့ နောက်မှာ

After many rounds of interviews,

I got into the fellowship program with a full scholarship.

ကျွန်မဟာ ထောက်ပံ့ကြေး အပြည့်ရတဲ့ ပညာသင်ဆုကို ရနိုင်ခဲ့တယ်။

My father was confused, my mother was worried --

ကျွန်မ အဖေက စိတ်ရှုပ်သွားခဲ့သလို အမေကျတော့ စိတ်ပူနေခဲ့တယ်--

My father was confused, my mother was worried,

ကျွန်မ အဖေက စိတ်ရှုပ်နေခဲ့ပြီး အမေကျတော့ စိတ်ပူနေခဲ့တယ်။

but I felt butterflies in my stomach

ကျွန်မကျတော့ စိတ်ထဲမှာ လိပ်ပြာတွေ ပျံဝဲနေသလိုပါပဲ။

because I was going to step out of my village

ကျွန်မ ကျွန်မရဲ့ ရွာထဲကနေပြီး ထွက်ခွာရမှာမို့လို့ပါ၊

for the first time

ပထမဦးဆုံးအကြိမ်ပါ၊

to study in the national capital.

မြို့တော်မှာ သွားပြီး ကျောင်းတက်ဖို့ပါ။

Of the 97 fellows selected that year,

အဲဒီနှစ်မှာ အရွေးခံခဲ့ကြရတဲ့ ကျောင်းသား ၉၇ ဦးထဲမှာ

I was the only rural college graduate.

ကျွန်မ တစ်ဦးတည်းသာ ကျေးလက်ကောလိပ်ဘွဲ့ရပါ။

ကျွန်မနှင့် ဆင်တူသူ ဒါမှမဟုတ် ကျွန်မလို ပြောဆိုခဲ့သူ ဘယ်သူမှ မရှိခဲ့ပါ။

There was no one there who looked like me or spoke like me.

I felt alienated, intimidated and judged by many.

အများက ကျွန်မကို စိမ်းကားသလို၊ ခြိမ်းခြောက် ရှုတ်ချသလို ခံစားရတယ်။

One fellow called me "Coconut Girl."

တစ်ယောက်က ကျွန်မကို "အုန်းပင် မိန်းကလေး" လို့ ခေါ်ခဲ့တယ်။

Can you guess why?

ဘာကြောင့်လဲ ရှင်တို့ ခန့်မှန်းနိုင်လား။

Anyone?

တစ်ယောက်ယောက်များ သိလား။

That's because I applied a lot of coconut oil to my hair.

ကျွန်မဆံပင်မှာ အုန်းဆီကို အများကြီး အသုံးပြုခဲ့လို့ပါ။

Another asked me where I had learned to speak English,

ကျွန်မ အင်္ဂလိပ်စကားကို ဘယ်မှာ သင်ယူခဲ့တာလဲ မေးသူ ရှိခဲ့တယ်၊

and some of my peers did not prefer to have me on their assignment teams

တချို့ အတန်းနေ ကျောင်းသားတွေက သူတို့အဖွဲ့ ထဲ ကျွန်မကို အထည့် မခံလိုချင်ခဲ့ကြပါ၊

because they thought I would not be able to contribute to their discussion.

သူတို့ရဲ့ ဆွေးနွေးမှုတွေထဲမှာ ကျွန်မ ပါဝင်နိုင်မှ ာမဟုတ်ဘူးလို့ ထင်ခဲ့ကြတယ်။

I felt that many of my peers believed that a person from rural India

ကျွန်မရဲ့ ကျောင်းနေဘက် အများအပြားတို့က အိန္ဒိယ ကျေးလက်ဒေသမှ လာသူဟာ

could not supply anything of value,

ဘာမှ တန်ဖိုး မရှိနိုင်ဘူးလို့ ထင်ကြသလို ခံစားရပါတယ်။

yet the majority of Indian population today is rural.

တကယ်တမ်းမှာ အိန္ဒိယလူဦးရေရဲ့ အများစုက ကျေးလက်ဒေသမှာပါ။

I realized that stories like mine were considered to be an exception

ကျွန်မလို အဖြစ်မျိုးဟာ ခြွင်းချက်ဖြစ်ပြီး အများက မျှေလင့်ထားတာမျိုး မဟုတ်ကြောင်း

and never the expectation.

ကျွန်မ နားလည်မိတယ်။

I believe that all of us are born into a reality that we blindly accept

ကျွန်မရဲ့ ယုံကြည်ချက်က ကျွန်မတို့အားလုံးဟာ အရှိတရားထဲမှာ မျက်စိမှိတ် မွေးလာကြရတယ်၊

until something awakens us and a new world opens up.

တစ်ခုခုက ကျွန်မတို့ရှေ့မှာ ကမ္ဘာကြီးအသစ်ကို ဖွင့်မပေးတဲ့ အချိန်ထိပါ။

When I saw my mother's first signature on her bidi-rolling wage book,

ကျွန်မ ကျွန်မမိခင်ရဲ့ ပထမလက်မှတ်ကို သူမရဲ့ bidi လိပ်ရေး မှတ်တမ်းမှာ တွေ့ရှိခဲ့စဉ်

when I felt the hot Delhi air against my face

ကျွန်မ နာရီ ၅၀ ကြာ ရထားစီးလာခဲ့တဲ့နောက်မှာ

after a 50-hour train journey,

ဒေလီမြို့ရဲ့ ပူပြင်းတဲ့ လေက ကျွန်မမျက်နှာ ရိုက်ခတ်ချိန်မှာ၊

when I finally felt free and let myself be,

ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကို လွတ်လပ်လာပြီ ကိုယ့်စိတ် ကြိုက်နေနိုင်ပြီလို့ ခံစားရချိန်မှာ၊

I saw a glimpse of that new world I longed for,

ကျွန်မ မျှော်လင့်လာခဲ့တဲ့ ကမ္ဘာကြီးအသစ်ကို တစေ့တစောင်း မြင်တွေ့လိုက်ရတယ်၊

a world where a girl like me is no longer a liability or a burden

ကျွန်မလို မိန်းကလေးဟာ ဝန်ထုပ်ဝန်ပိုးကြီး မဟုတ်တော့ဘဲ

but a person of use, a person of value

အသုံးဝင်သူ၊ တန်ဖိုးရှိတဲ့သူ၊

and a person of worthiness.

ပြီးတော့ ထိုက်တန်တဲ့ ပုဂ္ဂိုလ်တစ်ဦး ဖြစ်လာတဲ့ ကမ္ဘာပါ။

By the time my fellowship ended, my life had changed.

ကျွန်မရဲ့ သင်တန်း ပြီးဆုံးချိန်မှာ ကျွန်မရဲ့ ဘဝဟာ ပြောင်းလဲသွားပါပြီ။

Not only had I traced my lost voice,

ကျွန်မဟာ ကျွန်မရဲ့ အသံ ပျောက်ဆုံးသွားတာကို ခြေရာခံနိုင်ခဲ့သလို

but also had a choice to make myself useful.

ကျွန်မ ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကို အသုံးဝင်သူ ဖြစ်အောင် ရွေးချယ်နိုင်ခဲ့တယ်။

I was 22.

ကျွန်မအသက် ၂၂ နှစ်ရှိခဲ့တယ်။

I came back to my village to set up the Bodhi Tree Foundation,

ကျွန်မဟာ ဗောဓိပင်ဖောင်ဒေးရှင်းကို ထူထောင်ရန် ကိုယ့်ရွာကို ပြန်လာခဲ့တယ်။

an institution that supports rural youth

ပညာရေး၊ ဘဝဆိုင်ရာ ကျွမ်းကျင်မှုများနဲ့ အခွင့်အလမ်းများကို

by providing them with education, life skills and opportunities.

လူငယ်များအား ထောက်ပံ့ပေမယ့် အဖွဲ့အစည်းပါ။

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ ကျေးလက်ဒေသရှိ လူငယ်များရဲ့ ဘဝကို

We work closely with our rural youth

to change their life and to benefit our communities.

ပြောင်းလဲပစ်ရန် ကျွန်မတို့အသိုင်းအဝိုင်း အကျိုးအတွက် လက်တွဲ လုပ်ဆောင်ခဲ့ကြတယ်။

ကျွန်မရဲ့ အဖွဲ့ဟာ ရလဒ်ဖြစ်ထွန်းတာကို ကျွန်မ ဘယ်လို သိရှိနိုင်လဲ။

How do I know my institution is working?

Well, six months ago, we had a new joinee.

ကောင်းပြီ၊ လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ ခြောက်လတုန်းက လက်တွဲပါဝင်လာသူ အသစ်ရှိခဲ့ပါတယ်။

Her name is Kaviarasi.

သူမ အမည်က Kaviarasi ပါ။

I first spotted her in a local college in Tirunelveli

သူ့ကို ကျွန်မပထမဦးဆုံး အကြိမ် သတိထားမိတာက Tirunelveli ကောလိပ် တစ်ခုမှာ

during one of my training sessions.

ကျွန်မ သင်တန််းပေးနေခဲ့စဉ်တုန်းကပါ။

As you can see, she has a smile which you can never forget.

ရှင်တို့ အားလုံး မြင်နိုင်ကြသလို ဘယ်တော့မှ မေ့မရနိုင်တဲ့ အပြုံးကို သူမပိုင်ဆိုင်သူပါ။

We guided her to get an opportunity to study at Ashoka University, Delhi.

ကျွန်မတို့ လမ်းညွန်ပေးလို့ သူမဟာ ဒေလီမြို့ Ashoka University မှာ ပညာသင်ခွင့် ရခဲ့တယ်။

The best part of her story is that she is now back at Bodhi Tree as a trainer

သူမဇာတ်လမ်းရဲ့အကောင်းဆုံးအပိုင်းက အခုသူ ဗောဓိပင်အဖွဲ့မှာ သင်တန်းဆရာ ဖြစ်နေပြီ။

working with dedication to make a change in the lives of others like her.

အခြားသူတို့ရဲ့ ဘဝကိုပါ သူမလိုပဲ ပြောင်း လဲပစ်ရန် စိတ်ပိုင်းဖြတ် အားထုတ်နေသူပါ။

Kaviarasi doesn't want to feel like an exception.

Kaviarasi ဟာ ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကို ခြွင်းချက်သဖွယ် မခံစားလိုပါ။

She wants to be of use to others in this world.

သူမဟာ ဒီကမ္ဘာကြီးထဲက အခြားသူများ အတွက် အသုံးဝင်သူ ဖြစ်လိုပါတယ်။

Recently, Kaviarasi mentored Anitha,

မကြာသေးမီက Kaviarasi ဟာ ဝေးလံတဲ့ ကျေးလက်ဒေသမှ လာသူ

who also comes from a remote, rural village,

ဖြစ်တဲ့ Anitha ကို လမ်းညွန်ပေးခဲ့တယ်၊

lives in a 10-foot-by-10-foot home,

သူမဟာ ၁၀ ပေ ပတ်လည် အိမ်ထဲမှာ နေထိုင်ခဲ့ရပြီး

her parents are also farm laborers.

သူ့မိဘတွေကလည်း လယ်ယာလုပ်သားတွေပါ။

Kaviarasi helped Anitha secure admission in a prestigious undergraduate program

Anitha အတွက် အိန္ဒိယနိုင်ငံထဲက ထိပ်သီး တက္ကသိုလ် တစ်ခုမှာ စက​ောလားရှစ် အပြည့်

in a top university in India with a full scholarship.

ရရှိအောင် Kaviarasi က ကူညီပေးနိုင်ခဲ့တယ်။

Anitha ရဲ့မိဘမျာက သူ့ကို အဲဒီလို ဝယ်တဲ့ နေရာပို့ရေးကို တွန့်ဆုတ်နေချိန်မှာ၊

When Anitha's parents were reluctant to send her that far,

we asked the district administration officials

ကျွန်မတို့က ခရိုင်အုပ်ချုပ်ရေး အာဏာပိုင်များအား

to speak to Anitha's parents,

Anitha ရဲ့မိဘများနဲ့ စကားပြောရန် မေတ္တာရပ်ခံခဲ့ကြရာ၊

and it worked.

And then there is Padma.

အောင်မြင်လာခဲ့ပါတယ်။

ပြီးတော့ Padma ဆိုတာလည်း ရှိပါသေးတယ်။

Padma and I went to college together.

She's the first in her entire village to attend graduation.

သူမဆိုရင် သူမရဲ့ တရွာလုံးထဲ ဘွဲ့ရထားသူ တဦးတည်းပါ။

She had been working with me at Bodhi Tree

သူမဟာ ကျွန်မနဲ့အတူ ဗောဓိပင်မှာ လက်တွဲလုပ်လာခဲ့ပြီး

until one day she decides to go to graduate school.

တနေ့တွင် ဘွဲ့ယူဖို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်ခဲ့တယ်။

I asked her why.

ဘာ့အတွက်လဲလို့ သူမကို ကျွန်မ မေးကြည့်ခဲ့တယ်။

She told me that she wanted to make sure

သူမရှင်းပြခဲ့တာက သူမဘဝရဲ့ ဘယ်လို အချိန်မှာမှ သူမဟာ

that she would never be a liability or a burden to anyone

ဘယ်သူအတွက်မှ ဝန်ထုပ်ဝန်ပို မဖြစ်စေရကြောင်း

at any point in her life.

သေချာ စိတ်ချရစေဖို့အတွက်ပါ ဆိုပြီး ရှင်းပြခဲ့တယ်။

Padma, Anitha နဲ့ Kaviarasi တို့ဟာ

grew up in the most tough families and communities

စိတ်ကူးရနိုင်တဲ့ အခက်ခဲဆုံးသော မိသားစုများနဲ့ အသိုင်းအဝိုင်းများထဲမှာ

one could only imagine.

ကြီးပြင်းလာခဲ့ကြရတဲ့ သူတွေပါ။

Yet the journey of finding my usefulness in this world

ကျွန်မက ဒီကမ္ဘာကြီးမှာ အသုံးဝင်သူ ဖြစ်ကြောင်း ရှာနိုင်ခဲ့တဲ့ လမ်းကြောင်းဟာ

served them in finding their usefulness to this world.

သူတို့ကိုပါ ဒီကမ္ဘာကြီးမှာ အသုံးဝင်သူ ဖြစ်အောင် ရှာကြံရန် ကူပေးခဲ့တယ်။

စိန်ခေါ်မှုတွေကို ရင်ဆိုင်ကြရတာဓမ္မတာပါပဲ။

Of course there are challenges.

I'm aware change does not happen overnight.

အပြောင်းအလဲဆိုတာ နေ့ချင်းညချင်း ဖြစ်မလာနိုင်တာကို ကျွန်မ သိပါတယ်။

A lot of my work involves working with families and communities

ကျွန်မရဲ့ အလုပ်အများစုက မိသားစုများနဲ့ ရပ်ကွက်ပြည်သူတို့နဲ့

to help them understand why getting an education

ဆက်ဆံလျက် ပညာရေးကို ရယူရေးဟာ လူတိုင်းအတွက် ဘာဖြစ်လို့ အရေးပါတာကို

is useful for everyone.

ရှင်းပြ ပေးနေရခြင်းပါ။

The quickest way to convince them is by doing.

သူတို့ကို လက်ခံစည်းရုံးရန် အအမြန်ဆုံး နည်းလမ်းက လုပ်ပြရန်ပါပဲ။

When they see their kids getting a real education,

သူတို့က သူတို့ရဲ့ ကလေးတွေ ပညာရေးကို တကယ့် ရနေပါလား၊

getting a real job, they begin to change.

တကယ့်အလုပ် ရတာကို၊ မြင်ရတဲ့ အခါမှာ သူတို့ဟာ ပြောင်းလဲလာကြတယ်။

The best example is what happened at my home.

အကောင်းဆုံး ဥပမာက ကျွန်မ အိမ်ရဲ့ အဖြစ်ပါပဲ။

I was recently given an award in recognition of my social work

ကျွန်မရဲ့ လူမှုရေး လုပ်ငန်းတွေကို အသိအမှတ် ပြုတဲ့ အနေနဲ့ ပြည်နယ် ဝန်ကြီးချုပ်က

by the chief minister of my state.

မကြာမီကပဲ ကျွန်မ ဆုချီးမြှင့်ခဲ့တယ်။

That meant I was going to be on television.

ဆိုလိုတာက ကျွန်မကို တီဗီမှာ ပြပေးတော့မှာ။

Everyone was hooked on to the television that morning, including my parents.

အဲဒီ မနက်တုန်းက လူတိုင်းဟာ၊ ကျွန်မမိဘများ အပါအဝင် တီဗီကို စောင့်ကြည့်နေခဲ့ကြတယ်။

I would like to believe that seeing her daughter on television

ကိုယ့်သမီးကို တီဗီမှာ မြင်လိုက်ရခြင်းက ကျွန်မရဲ့ မိခင်ကိုပါ

made my mother feel useful too.

ငါလည်း အသုံးဝင်တဲ့သူ တစ်ယောက်ပါကလားလို့ ခံစားစေခဲ့မှာ သေချာပါတယ်။

Hopefully, she will stop pressuring me to get married now.

သူမဟာ ကျွန်မ အခုကို လက်ထပ်ဖို့ ဖိအားပေး နေတာ ရပ်တန့်သွားမယ်လို့ မျှော်လင့်ချင်တယ်။

Finding my use has helped me to break free from the identities

ကျွန်မကို အသုံးဝင်သူ ဖြစ်အောက် လုပ်နိုင် ခြင်းက လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းက ကျွန်မအား မြင်ခဲ့တဲ့

society thrusts on me --

အရည်အချင်း လက္ခဏာတွေကို၊

poor village girl.

ဆင်းရဲတဲ့ ရွာသူလေး ဆိုတာကို ပြောင်းပစ်ခဲ့တယ်။

Finding my use has helped me to break free from being boxed,

ကျွန်မကို အသုံးဝင်သူ ဖြစ်အောက် လုပ်နိုင် ခြင်းက အဖက်ဖက်မှ လှောင်ပိတ်ခံနေခဲ့ရမှုမှ

caged and bottled.

ကျွန်မကို လွတ်မြောက် လာစေခဲ့ပါတယ်။

ကျွန်မကို အသုံးဝင်သူ ဖြစ်အောက် လုပ်နိုင်ခြင်းက ကိုယ့်အသံကို ရှာနိုင်ရန်၊

Finding my use has helped me to find my voice,

မိမိကိုမိမိ ထိုက်တန်သူနဲ့ လွတ်လပ်သူ အဖြစ် ခံစားလာစေပါတယ်။

my self-worth and my freedom.

ရှင်တို့အတွက် ကျွန်မရဲ့ အတွေး တစ်ခုကို ထားရစ်ခဲ့ချင်ပါတယ်-

I leave you with this thought:

Where do you feel useful to this world?

ရှင်တို့ဟာ ဒီကမ္ဘာကြီးအတွက် အသုံးဝင်ကြောင်း ဘယ်မှာ ခံစားကြရပါသလဲ။

Because the answer to that question

အဲဒီမေးခွန်းရဲ့ အဖြေဟာဖြင့်

is where you will find your voice and your freedom.

ရှင်တို့ရဲ့ အသံတွေကို ရှာတွေ့နိုင်ပြီး ရှင်တို့ လွတ်လပ်တဲ့ နေရာပဲ ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။
