I was eight years old.

I remember that day clearly

My mother is a bidi roller.

She hand-rolls country cigarettes to sustain our family.

家計を支えるために 地元産の煙草を手で巻いています

She is a hard worker

母は働き者です

and spent 10 to 12 hours every day rolling bidis.

毎日10～12時間も 煙草を巻いていました

That particular day she came home and showed me her bidi-rolling wage book.

その日 母は帰ってくるなり 賃金台帳を私に見せ

She asked me how much money she has earned that week.

その週の稼ぎが いくらだったのかを尋ねました

I went through that book,

台帳に目を通すと

and what caught my eyes were her thumbprints on each page.

目に留まったのは 各ページに押された母の拇印でした

My mother has never been to school.

母は一度も学校に行ったことがありません

She uses her thumbprints instead of a signature

だから 自分の稼ぎを記録する時に サインの代わりに

to keep a record of her earnings.

On that day, for some reason,

I wanted to teach her how to hold a pen and write her name.

母にペンの持ち方と 名前の書き方を教えたくなりました

She was reluctant at first.

She smiled innocently and said no.

But deep down, I was sure she wanted to give it a try.

With a little bit of perseverance and a lot of effort,

we managed to write her name.

何とか名前を書けるようになりました

Her hands were trembling, and her face was beaming with pride.

母は 手は震わせながらも 顔は誇らしげに輝いて見えました

As I watched her do this,

そんな母を見ていて

for the first time in my life,

人生で初めて

I had a priceless feeling:

何とも言えない感情が湧いてきました

that I could be of some use to this world.

自分に存在価値があるという感情です

That feeling was very special,

この感情は本当に特別でした

because I am not meant to be useful.

なぜなら 私には価値が無いと 決めつけられてきたからです

In rural India, girls are generally considered worthless.

インドの田舎では 女子は大抵 無価値とみなされています

They're a liability or a burden.

手のかかる厄介者であり

If they are considered useful,

何かに役立つとすれば

it is only to cook dishes, keep the house clean

料理をするか 家の掃除をするか

or raise children.

子供の世話をするくらいだと

As a second daughter of my conservative Indian family,

保守的なインド人家庭の 次女として生まれた私は

I was fairly clear from a very early age

かなり幼い時から よく分かっていました

that no one expected anything from me.

自分は誰からも何も 期待されていないということを

I was conditioned to believe that the three identities that defined me --

私はこんな風に信じ込んでいました 自分を定義する３つの属性ー

poor village girl --

貧しく 田舎育ちで 女であることは

meant that I was to live a life of no voice and no choice.

意見することも 選択することも叶わぬ運命を意味すると

These three identities forced me to think

この３つの属性を前にすると

that I should never have been born.

生まれてくるべきでなかったと 考えてしまうのです

Yet, I was.

それでも私は

All throughout my childhood, as I rolled bidis alongside my mother,

子供時代に 母の隣で仕事を手伝いながら

I would wonder:

ずっと気になっていました

What did my future hold?

将来どんなことが 待ち受けているのだろうと

I often asked my mother, with a lot of anxiety,

不安で一杯になった私は よく母に尋ねたものです

"Amma, will my life be different from yours?

「私はお母さんとは違う人生を送れるの？

Will I have a chance to choose my life?

自分の人生を選ぶことはできるの？

Will I go to college?"

大学に行けるの？」

And she would reply back,

母は答えたものです

"Try to finish high school first."

「まずは高校を出なさい」

I am sure my mother did not mean to discourage me.

母は私を失望させようとした わけではないと思います

She only wanted me to understand

ただ この村の女子としては

that my dreams might be too big for a girl in my village.

私の夢は大きすぎるということを 理解させたかったのでしょう

When I was 13, I found the autobiography of Helen Keller.

13才の時 ヘレン・ケラーの 自伝に出会いました

Helen became my inspiration.

ヘレンは私の励みになりました

I admired her indomitable spirit.

彼女の不屈の精神にあこがれました

I wanted to have a college degree like her,

彼女のように 大学の学位を取りたいと思いました

so I fought with my father and my relatives to be sent to college,

だから 大学へ行かせて欲しいと 父や親戚に反抗しました

and it worked.

結果は成功でした

During my final year of my undergraduate degree,

学部生の最後の年に

I desperately wanted to escape from being forced into marriage,

結婚を無理強いされることから どうしても逃れたくて

so I applied to a fellowship program in Delhi,

デリーで募集中の 奨学金付きプログラムに応募しました

which is about 1,600 miles away from my village.

村から2,600km離れた場所です

(Laughter)

In fact, I recall that the only way I could fill out the application

今でも覚えていますが 申請書を作成できる唯一の時間は

was during my commute to college.

大学への通学途中くらいでした

I did not have access to computers,

パソコンがなかったため

so I had to borrow a college junior's cell phone.

大学の後輩の携帯電話を 借りる必要がありました

As a woman, I could not be seen with a cell phone,

女の私が携帯電話を持っているのを 見られるわけにはいきません

so I used to huddle his phone under my shawl

だから 背を丸めて 携帯電話をショールに隠し

and type as slowly as possible

音を聞かれないように なるべくゆっくりと

to ensure that I would not be heard.

文字を打ち込んだものです

After many rounds of interviews,

何度もの面接を経て

I got into the fellowship program with a full scholarship.

全額支給の奨学金付きプログラムに 合格しました

My father was confused, my mother was worried --

父は困惑していましたし 母は心配していました

(Applause)

but I felt butterflies in my stomach

一方 私は緊張して落ち着きませんでした

because I was going to step out of my village

for the first time

to study in the national capital.

勉強することになったからです

Of the 97 fellows selected that year,

その年に選ばれた97名の同級生のうち

I was the only rural college graduate.

私が唯一の田舎の大学出身者でした

There was no one there who looked like me or spoke like me.

私のような見た目の人も しゃべり方の人もいませんでした

I felt alienated, intimidated and judged by many.

疎外感を覚え 尻込みしました 大勢から値踏みされている気がしました

One fellow called me "Coconut Girl."

ある同級生から 「ココナッツ娘」と呼ばれました

Can you guess why?

なぜだか分かりますか

Anyone?

どうですか

That's because I applied a lot of coconut oil to my hair.

髪の毛に大量のココナッツオイルを 塗りつけていたからです

(Laughter)

Another asked me where I had learned to speak English,

どこで英語を学んだのか 聞いてくる人もいました

and some of my peers did not prefer to have me on their assignment teams

私と同じ課題のチームになるのを 嫌がる同級生もいました

because they thought I would not be able to contribute to their discussion.

ディスカッションで貢献できないと 思われていたからです

I felt that many of my peers believed that a person from rural India

インドの田舎者は 何一つ価値あるものを提供できないと

could not supply anything of value,

多くの同級生が信じているようでした

yet the majority of Indian population today is rural.

インド人の大多数が 田舎に住んでいるにも関わらずです

I realized that stories like mine were considered to be an exception

私のようなケースは特例であり 決して期待の星ではないのだと

and never the expectation.

気付きました

I believe that all of us are born into a reality that we blindly accept

私たちは皆 生まれながらの境遇を 盲目的に受け入れてしまいます

until something awakens us and a new world opens up.

何かのきっかけで目を覚まし 新しい世界が開ける瞬間までは

When I saw my mother's first signature on her bidi-rolling wage book,

母が初めて賃金台帳に書いた サインを見た瞬間

when I felt the hot Delhi air against my face

50時間に及ぶ 列車の旅を終えて

after a 50-hour train journey,

デリーの熱気を顔に感じた瞬間

when I finally felt free and let myself be,

やっと自由を感じ 本当の自分を取り戻した瞬間に

I saw a glimpse of that new world I longed for,

私は願い続けた新たな世界を 垣間見たのです

a world where a girl like me is no longer a liability or a burden

私のような女性が もはや 手のかかる厄介者ではなく

but a person of use, a person of value

役に立ち 価値があるとみなされ

and a person of worthiness.

必要とされる世界です

By the time my fellowship ended, my life had changed.

プログラムが修了する頃には 私の人生は一変していました

Not only had I traced my lost voice,

物を言う力を取り戻しただけではなく

but also had a choice to make myself useful.

自分の存在価値を確立する道を 選択できるようにもなっていました

I was 22.

22才の時 村に戻り

I came back to my village to set up the Bodhi Tree Foundation,

「Bodhi Tree Foundation」 を設立しました

an institution that supports rural youth

田舎の若者に教育を提供し ライフスキルを教え 機会を与えることで

by providing them with education, life skills and opportunities.

自立を支援する団体です

We work closely with our rural youth

田舎の若者の人生を変え コミュニティに恩恵をもたらせるよう

to change their life and to benefit our communities.

若者と一緒になって取り組みました

How do I know my institution is working?

この団体の活動は うまくいっているのでしょうか？

Well, six months ago, we had a new joinee.

６か月前 新人を迎えました

Her name is Kaviarasi.

カビアラシという女性です

I first spotted her in a local college in Tirunelveli

ティルネルヴェーリにある地方大学で 初めて彼女を目にしました

during one of my training sessions.

私が開催した講習会の最中でした

As you can see, she has a smile which you can never forget.

見ての通り 彼女は記憶に残るような 笑顔の持ち主です

We guided her to get an opportunity to study at Ashoka University, Delhi.

私たちは 彼女がデリーのアショカ大学で 学べるように手引きしました

The best part of her story is that she is now back at Bodhi Tree as a trainer

この話の素晴らしい点ですが 彼女は今 Bodhi Treeに戻り

working with dedication to make a change in the lives of others like her.

同じ境遇の子の人生を変えるべく トレーナーとして献身的に働いているのです

Kaviarasi doesn't want to feel like an exception.

彼女が願うのは 自分が例外的な存在ではない世界です

She wants to be of use to others in this world.

そのために 誰かの役に立ちたいと 願っているのです

Recently, Kaviarasi mentored Anitha,

このほど カビアラシは アニータを担当しました

who also comes from a remote, rural village,

アニータも人里離れた田舎の村出身で

lives in a 10-foot-by-10-foot home,

３メートル四方ばかりの家に 住んでいました

her parents are also farm laborers.

彼女の両親も農家でした

Kaviarasi helped Anitha secure admission in a prestigious undergraduate program

カビアラシの支援でアニータは インドのトップ大学の一流学部の

in a top university in India with a full scholarship.

入学許可を取得できました しかも 全額支給の奨学金付きです

When Anitha's parents were reluctant to send her that far,

アニータの両親は子供を遠くにやるのを 嫌がりましたが

we asked the district administration officials

私たちは 地区の行政職員にお願いして

to speak to Anitha's parents,

両親を説得してもらいました

and it worked.

それが功を奏しました

And then there is Padma.

そして パドマです

Padma and I went to college together.

パドマと私は 一緒に大学に通っていました

She's the first in her entire village to attend graduation.

彼女は村で初めて 大学を卒業した人物です

She had been working with me at Bodhi Tree

私とともにBodhi Treeで 働いていましたが

until one day she decides to go to graduate school.

ある日 団体を離れ 大学院に行くことを決めました

I asked her why.

She told me that she wanted to make sure

人生において 今後一切

that she would never be a liability or a burden to anyone

自分が誰かにとっての 厄介者になることはないという

at any point in her life.

Padma, Anitha and Kaviarasi

パドマ アニータ カビアラシの３人は

grew up in the most tough families and communities

想像しうる最も過酷な家庭環境や地域で

one could only imagine.

生まれ育ちました

Yet the journey of finding my usefulness in this world

それでも 私自身が存在価値を 見出すための過程が

served them in finding their usefulness to this world.

彼女たちの存在価値を 見出すことにも役に立ったのです

Of course there are challenges.

もちろん 困難もあります

I'm aware change does not happen overnight.

一夜にして変化をもたらすことなどできません

A lot of my work involves working with families and communities

私の仕事の多くは 家族や地域の人に理解してもらうことです

to help them understand why getting an education

なぜ教育を与えることが あらゆる人にとって

is useful for everyone.

有益なのかということを

The quickest way to convince them is by doing.

やってみせることが 最短の説得方法です

When they see their kids getting a real education,

実際に子供たちが教育を受け

getting a real job, they begin to change.

仕事を得るところを見ると 考えが変わり始めます

The best example is what happened at my home.

私の家庭が最も良い例でしょう

I was recently given an award in recognition of my social work

先日 私は社会活動を認められ

by the chief minister of my state.

州知事から表彰されました

That meant I was going to be on television.

つまり 私がテレビに出るということです

(Laughter)

Everyone was hooked on to the television that morning, including my parents.

当日の朝 両親を含む皆が テレビにくぎ付けになりました

I would like to believe that seeing her daughter on television

テレビに出演する娘の姿を見て

made my mother feel useful too.

母も自分の存在価値を実感したはずです

Hopefully, she will stop pressuring me to get married now.

できれば 結婚するように迫ることも やめてもらいたいです

(Laughter)

Finding my use has helped me to break free from the identities

存在価値を見つけることで 社会に押し付けられた自分から

society thrusts on me --

解放されました

poor village girl.

「貧しい田舎の女子」である自分です

Finding my use has helped me to break free from being boxed,

存在価値を見つけることで 閉じ込められた檻の中から

caged and bottled.

外に出ることができました

Finding my use has helped me to find my voice,

存在価値を見つけることで 物を言う自信を得て

my self-worth and my freedom.

自尊心と自由を 取り戻すことができました
