I was eight years old.

I remember that day clearly

like it happened just yesterday.

My mother is a bidi roller.

제 어머니는 담배를 마는 사람입니다.

She hand-rolls country cigarettes to sustain our family.

손으로 담배를 말아서 가족을 부양했죠.

She is a hard worker

열심히 일하셨습니다.

and spent 10 to 12 hours every day rolling bidis.

매일 열 시간, 열두 시간을 담배를 말았죠.

That particular day she came home and showed me her bidi-rolling wage book.

어느 한 날 어머니가 집에 오셔서는 장부를 보여주셨습니다.

She asked me how much money she has earned that week.

그리고 그 주에 얼마를 벌었는지 제게 물어보셨지요.

I went through that book,

그 장부를 훑어보는 중에

and what caught my eyes were her thumbprints on each page.

각 장마다 찍혀있는 어머니의 지장이 눈에 띄었습니다.

My mother has never been to school.

어머니는 학교에 다닌 적이 없으십니다.

She uses her thumbprints instead of a signature

서명을 지장으로 대신하고 있었던 거죠.

to keep a record of her earnings.

얼마나 벌었는지 기록하기 위해서 말이죠.

On that day, for some reason,

그 날, 무슨 이유에서였는지

I wanted to teach her how to hold a pen and write her name.

저는 어머니께 펜을 잡고 이름을 쓰는 것을 가르쳐드리고 싶었습니다.

She was reluctant at first.

어머니는 처음에는 주저하셨어요.

She smiled innocently and said no.

맑게 미소지으면서 괜찮다고 하셨죠.

But deep down, I was sure she wanted to give it a try.

하지만 마음 속 깊은 곳에서는 분명 해보고 싶으시다는 걸 느낄 수 있었습니다.

With a little bit of perseverance and a lot of effort,

꾸준함과 많은 노력으로

we managed to write her name.

어머니는 자신의 이름을 쓸 수 있게 되셨습니다.

Her hands were trembling, and her face was beaming with pride.

손을 떠셨고, 얼굴은 자랑스러움으로 빛났죠.

As I watched her do this,

어머니의 모습을 보면서

for the first time in my life,

저는 생애 처음으로

I had a priceless feeling:

말로 형용할 수 없는 감정을 느꼈습니다.

that I could be of some use to this world.

바로 제가 세상에 도움이 될 수 있다는 것을 말이죠.

That feeling was very special,

그 느낌은 너무나 특별했습니다.

because I am not meant to be useful.

왜냐하면 저는 쓸모없는 사람이었거든요.

In rural India, girls are generally considered worthless.

인도의 시골에서는 여자아이들은 쓸모없는 존재로 여겨집니다.

They're a liability or a burden.

여자아이들은 책임져야 할 대상 혹은 짐일 뿐입니다.

If they are considered useful,

여자들이 쓸모있는 존재로 여겨질 때에는

it is only to cook dishes, keep the house clean

오직 요리를 하거나 집을 청소하는 때 밖에 없죠.

or raise children.

아니면 육아할 때나요.

As a second daughter of my conservative Indian family,

보수적인 인도 가정의 둘째 딸로서

I was fairly clear from a very early age

저는 아주 어릴 때부터 확실하게 깨달았습니다.

that no one expected anything from me.

제게 뭔가 기대하는 사람은 없다는 걸 말이죠.

I was conditioned to believe that the three identities that defined me --

전 이 세 단어가 저를 정의한다고 믿게되었습니다.

poor village girl --

가난한 시골 여자아이.

meant that I was to live a life of no voice and no choice.

목소리와 선택이 없는 삶을 살 것이라는 걸 의미합니다.

These three identities forced me to think

그 세 단어의 정체성으로 인해

that I should never have been born.

저는 태어났으면 안됐다는 생각을 하게됐죠.

Yet, I was.

하지만 이미 태어났는 걸요.

All throughout my childhood, as I rolled bidis alongside my mother,

어린시절 내내, 어머니 옆에서 담배를 말면서

I would wonder:

고민하고는 했습니다

What did my future hold?

내 미래는 어떻게 될까?

I often asked my mother, with a lot of anxiety,

가끔 긴장하며 어머니께 물어봤습니다.

"Amma, will my life be different from yours?

"엄마, 내 인생은 엄마의 인생과는 다를까요?

Will I have a chance to choose my life?

제 인생을 선택할 수 있을까요?

Will I go to college?"

대학은 가게 될까요?"

And she would reply back,

그러면 어머니는 제게 말하셨습니다.

"Try to finish high school first."

"고등학교부터 끝내거라."

I am sure my mother did not mean to discourage me.

분명 저를 실망시키고 싶지 않으셔서 그러셨을 겁니다.

She only wanted me to understand

어머니는 제가 이해하길 바라셨죠.

that my dreams might be too big for a girl in my village.

제 꿈은 시골 여자아이에겐 너무 큰 꿈일지도 모른다는 사실을요.

When I was 13, I found the autobiography of Helen Keller.

13살 때, 헬렌켈러의 자서전을 발견했습니다.

Helen became my inspiration.

헬렌의 이야기는 제게 영감이 되었지요.

I admired her indomitable spirit.

그녀의 굽히지 않는 신념을 존경했고

I wanted to have a college degree like her,

그녀처럼 대학학위를 갖고 싶었습니다.

so I fought with my father and my relatives to be sent to college,

그래서 대학에 가기 위해 아버지와 친척들과 싸웠습니다

and it worked.

결국은 제가 이겼어요.

During my final year of my undergraduate degree,

학부 마지막 해를 보내면서

I desperately wanted to escape from being forced into marriage,

전 강제 결혼으로부터 탈출하고 싶었습니다.

so I applied to a fellowship program in Delhi,

which is about 1,600 miles away from my village.

제 마을과 2,500 km 떨어져있는 곳에요.

In fact, I recall that the only way I could fill out the application

was during my commute to college.

통학길에서 뿐이었습니다.

I did not have access to computers,

컴퓨터에 접속할 수 없었기에

so I had to borrow a college junior's cell phone.

대학후배에게 휴대폰을 빌렸어야 했어요.

As a woman, I could not be seen with a cell phone,

여자이기에, 전 휴대폰을 쓰는 걸 보이면 안됐습니다.

so I used to huddle his phone under my shawl

그래서 전 후배의 휴대폰을 숄 아래에 숨겨

and type as slowly as possible

가능한 조용히 타이핑을 했습니다.

to ensure that I would not be heard.

다른 사람에게 들키지 않도록요.

After many rounds of interviews,

여러 번의 인터뷰를 거치고 나서,

I got into the fellowship program with a full scholarship.

협력 프로그램에 전액장학금으로 합격을 했습니다.

My father was confused, my mother was worried --

제 아버지는 황당해하셨고 어머니는 걱정하셨는데

but I felt butterflies in my stomach

하지만 저는 기대감으로 가득찼죠.

because I was going to step out of my village

왜냐하면 제 마을을 벗어나는 거였으니까요.

for the first time

태어나서 처음으로요.

to study in the national capital.

수도에서 공부하기 위해서 말이죠.

Of the 97 fellows selected that year,

그 해의 97명의 수혜자들 가운데,

I was the only rural college graduate.

오직 저만 시골 대학을 졸업했습니다.

There was no one there who looked like me or spoke like me.

저처럼 보이는 사람도, 저처럼 말하는 사람도 없었죠.

I felt alienated, intimidated and judged by many.

동떨어져있는 느낌이었고 움츠러들었고, 많은 사람들에게 지적당했습니다.

One fellow called me "Coconut Girl."

한 친구는 저를 "코코넛 여자" 라고 불렀습니다.

Can you guess why?

왜 그랬을까요?

Anyone?

맞춰보실 분?

That's because I applied a lot of coconut oil to my hair.

그건 제가 제 머리카락에 코코넛 오일을 많이 발랐기 때문이었습니다.

Another asked me where I had learned to speak English,

다른 사람은 제가 어디서 영어를 배웠는지 물어봤고

and some of my peers did not prefer to have me on their assignment teams

또 다른 사람은 저를 팀에 끼워주고 싶어하지 않았죠.

because they thought I would not be able to contribute to their discussion.

왜냐하면 제가 그 팀에 기여하지 못할 거라고 생각했거든요.

I felt that many of my peers believed that a person from rural India

많은 사람들이 인도 시골에서 올라온 사람은

could not supply anything of value,

아무런 도움이 되지 않을 거라고 생각하는 듯했습니다.

yet the majority of Indian population today is rural.

정작 인도 대다수의 인구가 시골에서 살고있는데 말이죠.

I realized that stories like mine were considered to be an exception

저 같은 이야기는 예외적인 것이지

and never the expectation.

예상되는 것이 아님을 깨달았습니다.

I believe that all of us are born into a reality that we blindly accept

저는 우리 모두가 무턱대고 믿게되는 현실에 태어난다고 생각합니다.

until something awakens us and a new world opens up.

무언가가 우리를 깨워 새로운 세상이 열리기 전까진 말이죠.

When I saw my mother's first signature on her bidi-rolling wage book,

장부 위 어머니의 첫 서명을 봤을 때,

when I felt the hot Delhi air against my face

델리의 뜨거운 공기가 제 얼굴을 스치는 걸 느꼈을 때,

after a 50-hour train journey,

50시간의 기차여정 끝에

when I finally felt free and let myself be,

마침내 자유로워지고 제 자신이 되었다고 느꼈을 때

I saw a glimpse of that new world I longed for,

저는 제가 갈망하던 세상을 얼핏 보았습니다.

a world where a girl like me is no longer a liability or a burden

저같은 소녀가 더이상 골칫거리나 짐이 아니라

but a person of use, a person of value

유용하고 가치 있으며

and a person of worthiness.

필요한 사람이 되는 세상을요.

By the time my fellowship ended, my life had changed.

제 협력 프로그램이 끝났을 때, 제 인생은 바뀌었습니다.

Not only had I traced my lost voice,

잃어버린 제 의견의 권리를 찾았을 뿐만 아니라,

but also had a choice to make myself useful.

스스로를 쓸모있는 사람으로 만들 선택을 했습니다.

I was 22.

전 22살이었습니다.

I came back to my village to set up the Bodhi Tree Foundation,

저는 제 마을로 돌아와 보리 나무 재단을 설립했습니다.

an institution that supports rural youth

시골 아이들에게

by providing them with education, life skills and opportunities.

교육과 삶의 기술 그리고 기회를 제공하는 기관입니다.

We work closely with our rural youth

저희는 시골 아이들 가까이서 일했습니다.

to change their life and to benefit our communities.

아이들의 인생을 바꿔주고 우리 공동체에 이익을 주기 위해서요.

How do I know my institution is working?

제 재단이 잘 작동하는지 어떻게 아냐고요?

Well, six months ago, we had a new joinee.

글쎄요, 여섯 달 전, 새로운 참가자가 왔습니다.

Her name is Kaviarasi.

카비아라시라는 여자였죠.

I first spotted her in a local college in Tirunelveli

저는 그녀를 티루넬벨리의 지역 대학에서 처음 만났습니다

during one of my training sessions.

제 훈련 시즌 중 하나가 진행되는 동안요.

As you can see, she has a smile which you can never forget.

보시다시피 절대 잊을 수 없는 미소를 갖고 있죠.

We guided her to get an opportunity to study at Ashoka University, Delhi.

우린 그녀가 델리의 아쇼카대학에서 공부할 수 있는 기회를 얻도록 도왔습니다.

The best part of her story is that she is now back at Bodhi Tree as a trainer

이 이야기의 가장 좋은 부분은 그녀가 보리 나무 재단에 교육자로 다시 왔다는 겁니다.

working with dedication to make a change in the lives of others like her.

그녀처럼 다른 사람들의 인생에 변화를 주겠다는 신념을 갖고요.

Kaviarasi doesn't want to feel like an exception.

카비아라시는 예외가 되는 걸 원하지 않았습니다.

She wants to be of use to others in this world.

세상의 다른 사람들에게 도움이 되고 싶어했지요.

Recently, Kaviarasi mentored Anitha,

최근에, 카비아라시는 아니타를 지도했는데

who also comes from a remote, rural village,

매우 먼 시골에서 온

lives in a 10-foot-by-10-foot home,

가로 세로 3m 밖에 안되는 작은 집에 살고

her parents are also farm laborers.

부모님은 농장 노동자인 아이였습니다.

Kaviarasi helped Anitha secure admission in a prestigious undergraduate program

카비아라시는 아니타가 유명한 학부 프로그램이 있는

in a top university in India with a full scholarship.

인도의 높은 대학에 전액장학금을 받고 입학하도록 도왔습니다.

When Anitha's parents were reluctant to send her that far,

아니타의 부모님이 아이를 먼 곳으로 보내기를 주저할 때,

we asked the district administration officials

우린 지역 공무원에게 부탁해서

to speak to Anitha's parents,

아니타의 부모님을 설득하도록 했고

and it worked.

설득은 성공했습니다.

And then there is Padma.

그리고 여기 파드마가 있습니다.

Padma and I went to college together.

파드마와 저는 대학을 같이 다녔는데

She's the first in her entire village to attend graduation.

She had been working with me at Bodhi Tree

until one day she decides to go to graduate school.

I asked her why.

She told me that she wanted to make sure

that she would never be a liability or a burden to anyone

at any point in her life.

Padma, Anitha and Kaviarasi

파드마, 아니타, 그리고 카비아라시는

grew up in the most tough families and communities

몹시 어려운 환경의 가족과 공동체에서 자랐습니다.

one could only imagine.

상상하기도 힘들만큼 말이죠.

Yet the journey of finding my usefulness in this world

그렇지만 세상에서의 제 자신의 가치를 찾는 여정이

served them in finding their usefulness to this world.

그들이 세상에서의 그녀들 자신들의 가치를 찾도록 도왔습니다.

Of course there are challenges.

물론 힘들 때도 있습니다.

I'm aware change does not happen overnight.

변화는 하룻밤 사이에 이뤄지는 게 아니라는 걸 잘 알고있죠.

A lot of my work involves working with families and communities

제 일의 많은 부분은 가족과 공동체가

to help them understand why getting an education

이해할 수 있도록 돕는 것입니다.

is useful for everyone.

왜 교육이 모두에세 유용한 것인지요.

The quickest way to convince them is by doing.

제일 빠른 방법은 직접 하는 겁니다.

When they see their kids getting a real education,

그들이 자신의 아이들이 진짜 교육을 받고

getting a real job, they begin to change.

괜찮은 직장을 잡는 걸 봤을 때, 그들은 변화하기 시작하겠죠.

The best example is what happened at my home.

저희 집에 일어난 일은 아주 좋은 예시입니다.

I was recently given an award in recognition of my social work

최근에 저는 사회봉사에 대한 감사패를 받았습니다.

by the chief minister of my state.

제 도시의 시장에게서요.

That meant I was going to be on television.

그 말은 제가 TV에 나올 거라는 거였죠.

(Laughter)

Everyone was hooked on to the television that morning, including my parents.

그날 아침, 부모님을 포함한 모두가 TV에 매달려 있었습니다.

I would like to believe that seeing her daughter on television

자신의 딸이 TV에 나오는 것을 보며,

made my mother feel useful too.

어머니가 자신의 삶도 유용했다고 느끼게 했다고 믿고싶습니다.

Hopefully, she will stop pressuring me to get married now.

희망적이게도,그러면 어머니는 제게 결혼 압박을 멈추실테니까요.

갇혀있고, 막혀있는 상태에서부터요.

Finding my use has helped me to find my voice,

제 쓸모를 찾는 여정이 제 목소리와

my self-worth and my freedom.

저의 가치, 저의 자유를 찾도록 해주었습니다.
