I was eight years old.

من تەمەنم هەشت ساڵ بوو.

I remember that day clearly

باش ئەو ڕۆژەم لە بیرە.

like it happened just yesterday.

وەک بڵێی دوێنێ ڕووی دابێت.

My mother is a bidi roller.

دایکم توتنچییە.

She hand-rolls country cigarettes to sustain our family.

توتنی ناوچەکە دەپێچێتەوە بۆ دابینکردنی بژێوی ژیانمان.

She is a hard worker

کرێکارێکی زەحمەتکێشە

and spent 10 to 12 hours every day rolling bidis.

هەروەها ڕۆژانە ١٠ بۆ١٢ سەعات توتن دەپێچێتەوە.

That particular day she came home and showed me her bidi-rolling wage book.

ئەو ڕۆژە گەڕاوە ماڵەوە و دەفتەری توتنەکەی نیشاندام.

She asked me how much money she has earned that week.

پرسیاری لێکردم ئەو ڕۆژە چەندی دەستکەوتوە.

I went through that book,

گەڕانێکم بەناو دەفتەرەکەدا کرد،

and what caught my eyes were her thumbprints on each page.

ئەوەی سەرنجی ڕاکێشام جێ پەنجەکانی بوو لە هەر لاپەڕەیەک.

My mother has never been to school.

دایکم هەرگیز نەچۆتە قوتابخانە.

She uses her thumbprints instead of a signature

پەنجەمۆرەکانی لەجیاتی واژۆ بەکار دەهێنا

to keep a record of her earnings.

تاکو دەستکەوتەکانی تێدا تۆمار بکات.

On that day, for some reason,

لەو ڕۆژەوە، لەبەر هەندێک هۆکار،

I wanted to teach her how to hold a pen and write her name.

دەمویست فێری بکەم چۆن قەڵەم بگری و ناوی خۆی بنوسێت.

She was reluctant at first.

لە سەرتادا بێ هیوا بوو.

She smiled innocently and said no.

بە شێوەیەکی بێتاوان خەندەیەکی کرد و گووتی نەخێر.

But deep down, I was sure she wanted to give it a try.

بەڵام لە ناخیدا، دڵنیا بووم دەیویست هەوڵێک بدات.

With a little bit of perseverance and a lot of effort,

بەهەندێک هەوڵو کۆشش،

we managed to write her name.

سەرکەتوو بوین لە فێر کردنی نوسینی ناوی خۆی.

Her hands were trembling, and her face was beaming with pride.

دەستەکانی دەلەرزین و دەموچاویشی دەگەشایەوەی لە خۆشیان.

As I watched her do this,

هەرکە تەماشام دەکرد،

for the first time in my life,

بۆ یەکەمجار لە ژیانم،

I had a priceless feeling:

هەستێکی بێ پایانم هەبوو:

that I could be of some use to this world.

کە سودێکم بۆ ئەم جیهانە هەبێت.

That feeling was very special,

ئەوە هەستێکی زۆر تایبەت بوو،

because I am not meant to be useful.

چونکە گریمانەی ئەوەم نەدەکر سودێکم هەبێت.

In rural India, girls are generally considered worthless.

لە ژیانی لادێیی لە هیندستان، بەشێوەیەکی گشتی کچەکان بە بێ بەها سەیر دەکرێن.

They're a liability or a burden.

ئەوان عەیبە و بارگرانین.

If they are considered useful,

ئەگەر بە کەسێکی سودبەخشیش دابنرێن،

it is only to cook dishes, keep the house clean

ئەوە تەنها بۆچێشتلێنان و خاوێنکردنەوەی ماڵە

or raise children.

یان گەورەکردنی منداڵ.

As a second daughter of my conservative Indian family,

وەک دووەم کچ لە خێزانێکی پابەند بە بنەماکان،

I was fairly clear from a very early age

من لەسەرەتای تەمەنمەوە زۆر ڕوون بووم

that no one expected anything from me.

کە هیچ کەس هیچ لێ چاوەڕوان نەدەکردم.

I was conditioned to believe that the three identities that defined me --

دەبوو باوەڕ بکەم کە سێ ناسنامە پێناسەی من دەکەن--

poor village girl --

کچە لادێیەکی هەژار--

meant that I was to live a life of no voice and no choice.

واتا ژیانێک بگوزەرێنم هیچ دەنگ و هەڵبژاردەیەکی نەبێت.

These three identities forced me to think

ئەو سێ ناسنامە وای لێکردم بیر لەوە بکەمەوە

that I should never have been born.

هەرگیز نەدەبوایە لە دایک بومایە.

Yet, I was.

لەگەڵ ئەوەش، من بووم.

All throughout my childhood, as I rolled bidis alongside my mother,

لە هەموو تەمەنی منداڵیم لەتەک دایکم توتنم دەپێچایەوە،

I would wonder:

پرسیارم لە خۆم دەکرد:

What did my future hold?

داهاتوو چی بۆ هەڵگرتووم؟

I often asked my mother, with a lot of anxiety,

هەمیشە پرسیارم لەدایکم دەکرد، بەو پەڕی نیگەرانییەوە،

"Amma, will my life be different from yours?

" دایکە تۆ بڵێی ژیانم لە تۆ جیاواز بێت؟

Will I have a chance to choose my life?

تۆ بڵێی چانسی هەڵبژاردنی ژیانی خۆم هەبێت؟

Will I go to college?"

تۆ بڵێی بچمە زانکۆ؟"

And she would reply back,

ئەویش وەڵامی دەدامەوە،

"Try to finish high school first."

" سەرەتا هەوڵ بدە ئامادەیی تەواو بکەیت."

I am sure my mother did not mean to discourage me.

دڵنیام دایکم مەبەستی نەبوو ساردم بکاتەوە.

She only wanted me to understand

تەنیا دەیویست تێبگەم

that my dreams might be too big for a girl in my village.

خەونەکەم بۆ کچێکی لادێی زۆر گەورەیە.

When I was 13, I found the autobiography of Helen Keller.

کاتێک بووم بە ١٣ ساڵ ژیاننامەی هێلین کێلێرم بەرچاو کەوت.

Helen became my inspiration.

هێلین بوو بە ئیلهام بەخشی من.

I admired her indomitable spirit.

سەرسامی گیانی نەمری بووم.

I wanted to have a college degree like her,

دەمویست وەک ئەو بڕوانامەی زانکۆییم هەبێت،

so I fought with my father and my relatives to be sent to college,

بۆیە لەگەڵ باوکم و خزمەکانم جەنگام تا بنێردرێمە کۆلێژ،

and it worked.

لەوەش سەرکەوتوو بووم.

During my final year of my undergraduate degree,

لە دواهەمین ساڵی خوێندنم لە زانکۆ،

I desperately wanted to escape from being forced into marriage,

دەمویست بەوپەڕی توانا خۆم بەدوور بگرم لە هاوسەرگیری،

so I applied to a fellowship program in Delhi,

داواکاریم پێشکەشی پڕۆگرامێکی خوێندن کرد لە دێلهی،

which is about 1,600 miles away from my village.

کە نزیکەی ١و٦٠٠ میل لە لادێکەم دوور بوو.

In fact, I recall that the only way I could fill out the application

was during my commute to college.

I did not have access to computers,

so I had to borrow a college junior's cell phone.

بۆیە دەبوایە مۆبایلێکی زیرەک لە قوتابییەکی کۆلێژ وەرگرم.

As a woman, I could not be seen with a cell phone,

وەک ئافرەتێک، نەدەکرا مۆبایلی زیرەک بەکار بێنم،

so I used to huddle his phone under my shawl

بۆیە مۆبایلەکەم لە ژێر شاڵەکەم دەشاردەوە

and type as slowly as possible

بەهێواشیش تایپم دەکرد

to ensure that I would not be heard.

تاکو کەس ئاگای لێنەبێت.

After many rounds of interviews,

پاش چەند جارێک لە چاوپێکەوتن،

I got into the fellowship program with a full scholarship.

توانیم سکۆلەرشیپێکی تەواو وەرگرم.

My father was confused, my mother was worried --

باوکم سەری لێشێوا بوو, دایکیشم نێگەران بوو--

(Applause)

My father was confused, my mother was worried,

باوکم سەری لێشێوا بوو, دایکیشم نێگەران بوو--

but I felt butterflies in my stomach

بەڵام من دڵخۆش بووم

because I was going to step out of my village

چونکە لە لادێکەم دەردەچم

for the first time

بۆ یەکەمجار

to study in the national capital.

تا لە پایتەخت بخوێنم.

Of the 97 fellows selected that year,

لە هەر ٩٧ پاڵێوراو ئەو ساڵ،

I was the only rural college graduate.

تەنیا من دەرچوویەکی لادێی بووم.

There was no one there who looked like me or spoke like me.

کەس هاوشێوەی من نەبوو یان کەس وەک من قسەی نەدەکرد.

I felt alienated, intimidated and judged by many.

زۆر کەس خۆی لێ دوور دەگرتم، هەڕەشەی لێ دەکردم یان ڕەخنەی لێ دەگرتم.

One fellow called me "Coconut Girl."

یەکێکیان بە "کچی گوێزی هیندی" بانگی دەکردم.

Can you guess why?

دەزانن بۆچی؟

Anyone?

کەس دەزانێ؟

That's because I applied a lot of coconut oil to my hair.

چونکە ڕوونی گوێزهیندیم زۆر لە قژم دابوو.

Another asked me where I had learned to speak English,

یەکێکی تر پرسیاری لێ کردم لە کوێندەر ئەو ئینگلیزییە فێر بووم،

and some of my peers did not prefer to have me on their assignment teams

هەندێک لە هاوپۆلەکانم حەزیان نەدەکرد بەکۆمەڵ لەگەڵیان ئەرکەکان بکەم

because they thought I would not be able to contribute to their discussion.

چونکە وایان دەزانی ناتوانم بەشداری گفتوگۆکەیان بکەم.

I felt that many of my peers believed that a person from rural India

هەستم کرد زۆر لە هاوپۆلەکانم باوەڕیان وابوو کەسێکی لادێی

could not supply anything of value,

ناتوانێت هیچ بەهایەک پێشکەش بکات،

yet the majority of Indian population today is rural.

لەکاتێکدا زۆربەی دانیشتوانی هیندستا لە ئێستادا لادێین.

I realized that stories like mine were considered to be an exception

بۆم دەرکەوت چیرۆکی وەک من بەشتێکی نامۆو سەیر دادەنرێت

and never the expectation.

هەرگیز پێشبینی کراو نەبوو.

I believe that all of us are born into a reality that we blindly accept

لەو باوەڕەدام هەموومان لەو ڕاستیە لەدایک بووین کە بەکوێرانە قبولی دەکەین

until something awakens us and a new world opens up.

هەتا شتێک بە ئاگامان دێنێت و جیهانێکی نوێمان بۆ دەکرێتەوە.

When I saw my mother's first signature on her bidi-rolling wage book,

کاتێک یەکەم واژۆی دایکم لەسەر دەفتەری توتنەکە دیت،

when I felt the hot Delhi air against my face

کاتێک دەموچاوم هەستی بەگەرمای دێلهی کەوت

after a 50-hour train journey,

دوای گەشتێکی ٥٠ سەعاتی شەمەندەفەر،

when I finally felt free and let myself be,

کاتێک هەستم بە ئازادی کرد و هەستم بە خودی خۆم کرد،

I saw a glimpse of that new world I longed for,

تروسکایەک لەو جیهانە نوێیەم دیت کە هیوام بۆ دەخواست،

a world where a girl like me is no longer a liability or a burden

جیهانێک کە تیایدا کچ بە عەیبەو بارگرانی دانانرێت

but a person of use, a person of value

بەڵکو بە کەسێکی سودبەخش و پڕ بەها

and a person of worthiness.

و بەکەسێکی شایستە دادەنرێت.

By the time my fellowship ended, my life had changed.

ئەوکاتەی سکۆلەرشیپەکەم تەواو بوو، ژیانم گۆڕانی بەسەردا هات.

Not only had I traced my lost voice,

نەک تەنیا دەنگە وونبوەکەی خۆم دۆزییەوە،

but also had a choice to make myself useful.

بەڵکو توانم ببم بەکەسێکی سودبەخش.

I was 22.

من تەمەنم ٢٢ ساڵان بوو.

I came back to my village to set up the Bodhi Tree Foundation,

گەڕامەوە لادێیەکەم تاکو دەزگای درەختی بوزی دابمەزرێنم،

an institution that supports rural youth

دەزگایەک بۆ یارمەتی دانی گەنجانی لادێنشین

by providing them with education, life skills and opportunities.

لەڕێگەی فەراهم کردنی پەروەردە, کارامەییەکانی ژیان ودەرفەتەکان.

We work closely with our rural youth

بەجدی لەگەڵ گەنجانی لادێکە کار دەکەین

to change their life and to benefit our communities.

بۆ گۆڕینی ژیانیان و سود گەیاندن بە کۆمەڵگەکەمان.

How do I know my institution is working?

چۆن بزانم دەزگاکەم کار دەکات؟

Well, six months ago, we had a new joinee.

باشە، پاش شەش مانگ هاوبەشێکی نوێمان بۆ پەیدابوو.

Her name is Kaviarasi.

ناوی کاڤیاڕاسییە.

I first spotted her in a local college in Tirunelveli

یەکەم جار لە گوندێکی خۆجێی تیرونێلڤێلی دیتم

during one of my training sessions.

لەکاتی یەکێک لە خولەکانی ڕاهێنانم.

As you can see, she has a smile which you can never forget.

وەک دەبینن، خەندەیەکی هەیە هەرگیز لە بیری ناکەن.

We guided her to get an opportunity to study at Ashoka University, Delhi.

ڕێبەریمان کرد تا هەلێک وەرگرێت لە زانکۆی ئاشۆکا لە دێلهی بخوێنێت.

The best part of her story is that she is now back at Bodhi Tree as a trainer

ئەو ئێستا گەڕاوەتەو وەک ڕاهێنەر لەدەزگای درەختی بوزی کار دەکات

working with dedication to make a change in the lives of others like her.

بە دڵسۆزی کار دەکات بۆ بەدیهێنانی گۆڕانکاری لە ژیانی کەسانی تر.

Kaviarasi doesn't want to feel like an exception.

کاڤیاراسی نایەوێت خۆی جودا بکاتەوە.

She wants to be of use to others in this world.

دەیەوێت سودبەخش بێت بۆ کەسانی تر لەم جیهانە.

Recently, Kaviarasi mentored Anitha,

بەمدوایە، ڕاڤیاراسی ڕاهێنانی بە ئەنیتا کرد،

who also comes from a remote, rural village,

هەروەها ئەویش لە لادێیەکی دوورەدەست هاتبوو،

lives in a 10-foot-by-10-foot home,

لە ماڵەکی ١٠٠ پێ چوارگۆشە دەژیت،

her parents are also farm laborers.

هەروەها دایک و باوکیشی کرێکارن.

Kaviarasi helped Anitha secure admission in a prestigious undergraduate program

کاڤیاسی یارمەرتی ئەنیتای دا تا لە کۆلێژێکی بەرز بخوێنێت

in a top university in India with a full scholarship.

لە بەرزترین زانکۆ لە هیندستان بە سکۆلەرشیپێکی تەواو.

When Anitha's parents were reluctant to send her that far,

کاتێک دایک و باوکی ئەنیتا ڕێگر بوون,

we asked the district administration officials

داوامان لە بەرپرسانی کارگێڕی کرد

to speak to Anitha's parents,

لەگەڵیان قسە بکەن

and it worked.

ئەنجامیشی هەبوو.

And then there is Padma.

پاشانیش پادما هەبوو

Padma and I went to college together.

من و پادما پێکەوە بۆ کۆلێژ چووین.

She's the first in her entire village to attend graduation.

یەکەم کەس بوو لە لادێکەی ئامادەی مەراسیمی دەرچون بێت.

She had been working with me at Bodhi Tree

لەگەڵ من لە دەزگای بوزی تری کاری دەکرد

until one day she decides to go to graduate school.

تا ڕۆژێک بڕیاریدا بچێتە خوێندنی باڵا.

I asked her why.

پرسیارم لێکرد بۆچی.

She told me that she wanted to make sure

گوتی دەیەوێت دڵنیا بێت

that she would never be a liability or a burden to anyone

کە نابێتە بارگرانی و ئاستەنگ بۆ هیچ کەس

at any point in her life.

لە هەر بوارێکی ژیان.

Padma, Anitha and Kaviarasi

پادما، ئەنیتا و کاڤیاراسی

grew up in the most tough families and communities

لە سەرسەخترین کۆمەڵگە و خێزان گەورە بوون

one could only imagine.

تەنیا دەتوانی خەیاڵ بکەی.

Yet the journey of finding my usefulness in this world

لە کاتێکدا گەشتی دۆزینەوەی سودی خۆم لەم جیهانە

served them in finding their usefulness to this world.

وای لێکردم سودی ئەوان لەم جیهانە بزانم.

Of course there are challenges.

بێگومان بەربەسەت هەن.

I'm aware change does not happen overnight.

دەزانم گۆڕانکاری لە شەو ڕۆژێک ڕوو نادات.

A lot of my work involves working with families and communities

زۆربەی کارەکانم کارکردنە لەگەڵ خێزان و کۆمەڵگە

to help them understand why getting an education

تا یارمەتیان بدەم لە تێگەیشتنی هۆکاری ئەوەی پەروەردە

is useful for everyone.

بۆ هەموو کەسێک سوود بەخشە.

The quickest way to convince them is by doing.

خێراترین ڕێگە بۆ قەناعەت پێهێنانیان ئەنجام دانییەتی.

When they see their kids getting a real education,

کاتێک منداڵەکانیان پەروەردەیەکی ڕاستەقینە دەکرێن,

getting a real job, they begin to change.

کارێکی ڕاست دەکەن، دەست بەگۆڕینی دەکەن.

The best example is what happened at my home.

باشترین نمونە ئەوەیە کە لە ماڵی من ڕوویدا.

I was recently given an award in recognition of my social work

بەم دواییە بەرامبەر چالاکییە کۆمەڵایەتییەکان پاداشتیان کردم

by the chief minister of my state.

لە لایەن سەرۆک وەزیرانی وڵاتەکەم.

That meant I was going to be on television.

واتە من دەچومە سەرشاشەی تەلەڤزیۆن.

(Laughter)

Everyone was hooked on to the television that morning, including my parents.

ئەو بەیانییە هەموویان لە بەردەم تەلەڤزیۆن چاوەڕوان بوون، لەوانە دایک و باوکم.

I would like to believe that seeing her daughter on television

حەزم دەکرد باوەڕ بەوە بکەم دیتنی کچەکەی لەسەر شاشەی تەلەڤزیۆن

made my mother feel useful too.

وا لەدایکم بکات هەست بکات سودبەشخە

Hopefully, she will stop pressuring me to get married now.

خۆشبەختانە، چیتر پەستان ناخاتە سەرم تا شوو بکەم ئێستا.

Finding my use has helped me to break free from the identities

دۆزینەوەی سودەکانم یارمەتی دام تا ڕزگارم بێت لە و ناسنامانەی

society thrusts on me --

کۆمەڵگە بۆی داناوم--

poor village girl.

کچە لادێیەکی هەژار.

Finding my use has helped me to break free from being boxed,

دۆزینەوەی سودەکانم یارمەتی دام تا لەم چوارچێوەیە ڕزگارم بێت,

caged and bottled.

لەم قەفەس و زیندانە.

Finding my use has helped me to find my voice,

دۆزینەوەی سودەکانم یارمەتی دام تا دەنگی خۆم بدۆزمەوە,

my self-worth and my freedom.

کەرامەت و ئازادیم.

I leave you with this thought:

لەگەڵ ئەم بیرۆکەیە بەجێتان دێڵم:

Where do you feel useful to this world?

لە کوێندەری ئەم جیهانە هەست دەکەی سودبەخشیت؟

Because the answer to that question

چونکە وەڵامی ئەم پرسیارە

is where you will find your voice and your freedom.

لەم شوێنەیە دەنگ و ئازادیت لێی دەدۆزییەوە.
