I'm a writer-director who tells social-change stories,

ကျမဟာ လူမှုရေး-ပြောင်းလဲရေး ပုံပြင်များကို ပြောပြတဲ့ စာရေးဆရာ-ဒါရိုက်တာပါ၊

because I believe stories touch and move us.

ပုံပြင်တွေဟာ ကျမတို့ကို တို့ထိလျက် လှုပ်ရှားစေတာကို ကျမ ယုံကြည်လို့ပါ။

Stories humanize and teach us to empathize.

ပုံပြင်တွေဟာ လူသားစိတ် ဝင်လာစေလျက် စာနာကြရန် ကျမတို့ကို သွန်သင်ပေးကြတယ်။

Stories change us.

ပုံပြင်တွေဟာ ကျမတို့ကို ပြောင်းလဲပစ်နိုင်တယ်။

ကျမက ပြဇာတ်တွေ ရေးပြီး ညွှန်ကြားပေးတဲ့ အခါမှာ၊

When I write and direct plays,

I'm amplifying voices of disadvantaged groups,

ကျမဟာ ချို့တဲ့ကြတဲ့ အုပ်စုများရဲ့ အသံကို ချဲ့ပေးနေတာပါ၊

I'm fighting the self-censorship

ယူဂန်ဒါသမ္မတဟောင်း Idi Amin လက်ထက် အနုပညာရှင်တွေကို

that has kept many Ugandan artists away from social, political theater

အရေးယူခဲ့ပြီး အနုပညာရှင် အများအပြားတို့ကို လူမှုရေး၊ နိုင်ငံရေး စင်ပေါ်မှ

since the persecution of artists by former Ugandan president, Idi Amin.

ပထုတ်ပစ်လိုက်ခဲ့လို့၊ ကိုယ့်ကိုကိုယ် ဆင်စာ လုပ်မိမှာကိုလည်း တိုက်ပွဲ ဝင်နေရပါတယ်။

And most importantly, I am breaking the silence

ပြီးတော့ အရေးကြီးဆုံးက ကျမဟာ တားမြစ်ထားတဲ့ ပြဿနာတွေရဲ့

and provoking meaningful conversations on taboo issues,

တိတ်ဆိတ်မှုကို ဖြိုခွင်းရင်း အဓိပ္ပါယ် ရှိရှိ ဆွေးနွေးဖြစ်ဖို့ စွပေးနေပါတယ်၊

where often "Silence is golden" is the rule of thumb.

"တိတ်ဆိတ်မှုဟာ ရွှေပဲ" ဆိုတဲ့ စည်းကမ်းကို လက်ခံထားကြတဲ့ နေရာတွေပါ။

Conversations are important

ဆွေးနွေးမှုတွေဟာ အရေးကြီးကြတယ်၊

because they inform and challenge our minds to think,

၎င်းတို့က ကျမတို့ကို အသိပေးလျက် အသိစိတ်ကို စဉ်းစားရန် စိန်ခေါ်ပြီး

and change starts with thinking.

အပြောင်းအလဲ ဆိုတာ စဉ်းစားမှုမှ စတင်လို့ပါ။

One of my struggles with activism is its often one-sided nature

ကျမက လှုပ်ရှားမှုကို ဝင်နေရတဲ့ တိုက်ပွဲ တခုက မတူတဲ့ ရှုထောင့်တွေကို မကြာခဏဆိုသလို

that blinds us to alternative view,

မျက်စိကန်းစေတဲ့ တဖက်သတ်ဆောင်တဲ့ သဘောထားကိုပါ၊

that numbs our empathy,

၎င်းဟာ ကျမတို့ရဲ့ စာနာစိတ်ကို ထုံလာစေလျက်၊

that makes us view those who see issues differently

ပြဿနာတွေကို တမျိုးမြင်ကြသူတို့ကို လျစ်လျူရှူသူတွေ၊ ကိုယ်ကိုမုန်းတီးသူတွေ၊

as ignorant, self-hating, brainwashed, sellout or plain stupid.

ဦးနှောက် ဆေးကြောခံထားရသူတွေ၊ ငွေနဲ့ဝယ်ထား သူတွေ ဒါမှမဟုတ် လူပြိန်းတွေလို မြင်စေတယ်။

I believe no one is ignorant.

မသိနားလည်သူ မရှိကြဘူးလို့ ကျမ ယုံကြည်တယ်။

We are all experts, only in different fields.

ကျမတို့ အားလုံးက နယ်ပယ် အသီးသီးထဲမှာ ကျွမ်းကျင်သူတွေပါ။

And this is why, for me, the saying "stay in your truth" is misleading.

"ကိုယ့်အမှန်တရားပေါ်မှာ ရပ်တည်နေပါ" အဆိုဟာ ကျမအထင် လွဲမှားနေပါတယ်။

Because if you're staying in your truth,

ကိုယ့်အမှန်တရားပေါ်မှာ ရပ်တည်နေရင်၊

isn't it logical that the person you believe is wrong

ကိုယ်က မှားနေတယ်လို့ ယုံကြည်သူကကော သူ့ယုံကြည်ချက်ပေါ်

is also staying in their truth?

ရပ်တည်နေတာ မဖြစ်နိုင်ဘူးလား။

So, what you have is two extremes

အဲကြောင့်၊ ကိုယ့်ဆီမှာ ရှိနေတာက အစွန်းနှစ်ဖက်ပါ၊

that shut out all possible avenues of conversations.

ရှိနိုင်တဲ့ ဆွေးနွေးရေး နည်းလမ်းအားလုံးကို ပိတ်ပစ်လိုက်မှာပါ။

I create provocative theater and film to touch, humanize

ကျမဟာ သဘောမတူကြတဲ့ ဖက်များ စားပွဲမှာ ဝင်ထိုင်လာကြဖို့

and move disagreeing parties to the conversation table

နားလည်မှု လွဲမှားနေတာတွေ ပေါင်းကူးပေးဖို့ အတွက် ကျမဟာ တို့ထိလျက် လူသားဆန်လာစေကြမယ့်

to bridge misunderstandings.

ဆွပေးကြမယ့် ပြဇာတ်များနဲ့ ရုပ်ရှင်တွေကို ဖန်တီးပါတယ်။

I know that listening to one another will not magically solve all problems.

တဦးက တဦးကို နားထောင်ခြင်းက ပြဿနာအားလုံးကို ဥုံဖွဆိုပြီး ဖြေရှင်းမပေးနိုင်တာ ကျမသိတယ်။

ဒါပေမဲ့ အဲဒါဟာ လူသားတွေရဲ့ ပြဿနာ အများအပြားကို ဖြေရှင်းရန်

But it will give a chance to create avenues

to start to work together to solve many of humanity's problems.

စတင်လုပ်ကိုင်ဖို့ အခွင့်အလမ်းကို ဖန်တီးပေးနိုင်မှာပါ။

With my first play, "Silent Voices,"

အစိုးရနဲ့ Joseph Kony ရဲ့ LRA သူပုန်အုပ်စု အကြားက

based on interviews with victims of the Northern Uganda war

ယူဂန်ဒါမြောက်ပိုင်း စစ်ရဲ့ သားကောင်များနဲ့ မေးမြန်းခဲ့တာတွေကို အခြေခံထားတဲ့

between the government and Joseph Kony's LRA rebel group,

"တိတ်နေကြတဲ့ အသံများ” ဆိုတဲ့ ကျမရဲ့ ပထမဦးဆုံး ပြဇာတ်ထဲတွင် ကျမဟာ

I brought together victims, political leaders, religious leaders,

စစ်ရဲ့ သားကောင်များအတွက် တရားမျှတမှု ယူဆောင်ပေးနိုင်ရန် ဝေဖန်ရေး ရှုထောင့်မှ

cultural leaders, the Amnesty Commission and transitional justice leadership

ဆွေးနွေးကြရန်၊ နိုင်ငံရေး ခေါင်းဆောင်များ၊ ဘာသာရေးနဲ့ ယဉ်ကျေးမှုခေါင်းဆောင်များ၊

for critical conversations on issues of justice for war crime victims --

Amnesty Commissionနဲ့ ကူးပြောင်းရေးကာလ တရားမျှတမှု ခေါင်းဆောင်ပိုင်းတို့ကို

the first of its kind in the history of Uganda.

စုစည်းနိုင်ခဲ့ရာ ယူဂန်ဒါရဲ့ သမိုင်းထဲမှာ ပထမဦးဆုံး အကြိမ်ဖြစ်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

And so many powerful things happened,

အားကျဖွယ် ဖြစ်ရပ်တွေ အများကြီး ဖြစ်ပျက်လာခဲ့ကြလို့

that I can't even cover them all right now.

ကျမ ဒီနေရာမှာ အားလုံးကို ပြောပြဖို့ မဖြစ်နိုင်ပါ။

Victims were given the opportunity to sit at the table

သားကောင်များဟာ Amnesty Commission ခေါင်းဆောင်တို့နဲ့ အတူ

with Amnesty Commission leadership,

စားပွဲမှာ ဝင်ထိုင်ခွင့် ရရှိခဲ့ကြပါတယ်၊

and they expressed the big injustice they suffered

ကော်မရှင်က လျစ်လျူရှုခဲ့ပြီး စစ်ကျူးကျော်ရေး သမားတွေအတွက်

when the Commission ignored them

ဖြေရှင်းညှိနှိုင်းပေးခဲ့လို့ သူတို့ခံစားခဲ့ရတဲ့

and instead facilitated the resettlement of the war perpetrators.

ဧရာမ မတရားမှုတွေကို သူတို့ ထုတ်ဖော်ပြောဆိုခွင့် ရရှိခဲ့ကြပါတယ်။

And the Amnesty Commission acknowledged the victims' pain

အဲဒါနဲ့ Amnesty Commission ဟာ နစ်နာခဲ့ကြရ သူတို့နစ်နာမှုတွေကို အသိအမှတ်ပြုခဲ့ပြီး

and explained the thinking behind their flawed approaches.

တရားနည်းလမ်း မကျခဲ့တဲ့ သူတို့ရဲ့ ချဉ်းကပ် မှုများကို ရှင်းပြဖို့ ကြိုးပမ်းခဲ့ကြတယ်။

But one of the things that has stayed with me

ဒါပေမဲ့ အခုထိ မှတ်မိနေတဲ့ အရာတခုမှာ

is when, during my Northern Uganda tour of the play,

ကျမရဲ့ ပြဇာတ်ရဲ့ ယူဂန်ဒါ မြောက်ပိုင်းခရီးစဉ် အတွင်းမှာ၊

a man approached me and introduced himself

လူတယောက် ကျမဆီကို လာပြီး ကိုယ့်ကိုကိုယ် မိတ်ဆက်ပေးခဲ့လျက်

as a former rebel soldier of Joseph Kony.

Joseph Konyရဲ့ သူပုန်စစ်မှုထမ်း တဦးပါ။

He told me that he didn't want me to leave feeling disappointed,

ကျမအနေနဲ့ ကျမဖက်မှ မဆီလျော်ဘူးလို့ ထင်မိနိုင်မတဲ့ ရယ်မောမှုတွေကြောင့်

due to some of what I considered inappropriate laughter.

စိတ်မပျက်မိရန် သူဟာ ကျမကို အားပေးစကား ပြောခဲ့ပါတယ်။

He explained that his was a laughter of embarrassment

သူရဲ့ ရယ်မောမှုဟာ စိတ်မလုံမှုကြောင့် ရယ်မောမှု ဖြစ်ပြီး

and a recognition of his own embarrassment.

သူကိုယ်တိုင်ရဲ့ စိတ်မလုံမှုကို အသိအမှတ်ပြုမှုပါလို့ ရှင်းပြခဲ့တယ်။

He saw himself in the actors onstage

သူဟာ သူ့ကိုသူ စင်ပေါ်က ဇာတ်ကောင်တွေ အကြားမှာ မြင်တွေ့လိုက်လို့

and saw the meaninglessness of his past actions.

အတိတ်တုန်းက သူလုပ်ခဲ့တာတွေ အဓိပ္ပာယ်မဲ့ခဲ့ပုံကို နားလည်မိပါတယ်။

So I say: share your truths.

အဲကြောင့် ကျမက ကိုယ့်အမှန်တရားတွေကို မျှဝေကြပါ။

Listen to one another's truths.

တဦးရဲ့ အမှန်တရားကို တဦး နားထောင်ကြပါလို ပြောနေတာပါ။

You will discover a more powerfully uniting truth

ခင်ဗျားတို့ဟာ မြေကြီးခလယ်မှာ ရပ်တည် လာစေမယ့် ပိုအားကောင်း ညီညွတ်စေမယ့်

in the middle ground.

အမှန်တရားကို သင် ရှာတွေ့လာမှာပါ။

ကျမ အမေရိက ပြည်ထောင်စုမှာ နေထိုင်ခဲ့စဉ်၊

When I lived in the USA,

many of my American friends would be shocked at my ignorance

ကျမရဲ့ အမေရိကန် မိတ်ဆွေအများအပြားတို့က lasagna လို လူကြိုက်များတဲ့

at fancy Western dishes like lasagna, for instance.

အနောက်တိုင်း ဟင်းလျာတွေကို လျစ်လျူရှုမှုကြောင့် အံ့အားသင့်ခဲ့ကြရတယ်။

(Laughter)

(ရယ်သံများ)

And my question to them would be,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကျမကတော့ အဲဒီလိုသူတွေကို မေးတတ်တာက၊

"Well, do you know malakwang?"

"ခင်ဗျားတို့က malakwang ကို သိလား။"

And then I would tell them about malakwang,

ပြီးရင် ကျမက သူတို့ကို malakwang အကြောင်းကို ပြောမှာပါ၊

a fancy vegetable dish from my culture.

ကျမရဲ့ ယဉ်ကျေးမှုထဲ လူကြိုက်များတဲ့ ဟင်းသီးဟင်းရွက် ဟင်းလျာ တခုပါ။

And they would tell me about lasagna.

ဒီနောက်မှာ သူတို့က ကျမကို lasagna အကြောင်းပြောကြမယ်။

And we would leave richer and fuller individuals.

ဒီလိုဆို ကျမတို့ဟာ ပိုကြွယ်ဝလျက် ပြည့်စုံတဲ့ သူတွေ ဖြစ်လာကြမှာပါ။

Therefore, share your recipe truth.

အဲကြောင့် ရှင်တို့ရဲ့ အမှန်တရား ရှာနည်းကို မျှဝေကြပါ။

အဲဒီလိုဆိုရင် ဟင်းလျာဟာ ပိုအရသာ ရှိလာမှာပါ။

It makes for a better meal.
