I'm a writer-director who tells social-change stories,

أنا كاتبة ومخرجة، أروي قصص التغير الإجتماعى.

because I believe stories touch and move us.

لأني أؤمن بأنَّ القصص تلمسنا وتُحركنا.

Stories humanize and teach us to empathize.

قصص تلمسنا وتجعلنا نشعر بالتعاطف والإنسانية.

Stories change us.

قصص تُغيرنا.

When I write and direct plays,

عندما أكتب وأُخرِج مسرحيات،

I'm amplifying voices of disadvantaged groups,

أقوم بتوصيل وإعلاء أصوات المحرومين والمنبوذين.

I'm fighting the self-censorship

أُحارب الرقابة الذاتية

that has kept many Ugandan artists away from social, political theater

التى أبقت كثيرًا من الفنانين الأوغانديين بعيدًا عن المسرح السياسي والإجتماعي

since the persecution of artists by former Ugandan president, Idi Amin.

منذ الإضطهاد الذى لاقاه الفنانين على يد الرئيس الأوغاندي السابق،إيدي أمين.

And most importantly, I am breaking the silence

والأهم من ذلك، أنى أقوم بكسر الصمت

and provoking meaningful conversations on taboo issues,

وإثارة محادثات هادفة حول القضايا المحظورة،

where often "Silence is golden" is the rule of thumb.

حيثُ دائمًا القاعدة الأساسية هى "السكوت من ذهب".

Conversations are important

وتكمُن أهمية النقاشات فى أنها

because they inform and challenge our minds to think,

تُخبر وتتحدى عقولنا للتفكير،

and change starts with thinking.

والتفكير هو بداية التغيير.

One of my struggles with activism is its often one-sided nature

واحدة من معاناتي مع نشاطي هذا، في كونه ذو طبيعة أحادية الجانب،

that blinds us to alternative view,

تعمينا عن وجهات النظر الأخرى،

that numbs our empathy,

تُخدِّر تعاطفنا،

that makes us view those who see issues differently

وتجعلنا ننظر لهؤلاء الذين ينظرون للقضايا بنظرة مختلفة

as ignorant, self-hating, brainwashed, sellout or plain stupid.

كجاهلين، كارهين لأنفسهم، غُسِلَت أدمغتهم، خائنين أو مجرد حمقى.

I believe no one is ignorant.

أنا أؤمن بأنه لا أحد يُعدُّ جاهلًا.

We are all experts, only in different fields.

كلُّنا خبراء، لكن فى مجالاتٍ مختلفة.

And this is why, for me, the saying "stay in your truth" is misleading.

ولهذا، بالنسبة إلي، مقولة "إبقَ فى حقيقتك" هى مقولة مضلِلَة.

Because if you're staying in your truth,

لأنك لو بقيت في حقيقتك،

isn't it logical that the person you believe is wrong

أليس من المنطقى أن الشخص الذى تظنه مخطئ

is also staying in their truth?

هو أيضًا بقا فى حقيقته؟

So, what you have is two extremes

إذًا، فأنت أمام نقيضين

that shut out all possible avenues of conversations.

أغلقا كل السبل الممكنة للحوار.

I create provocative theater and film to touch, humanize

قمت بإنشاء مسرح استفزازي وسينما لكي ألمس،وأحرك الجانب الإنساني

and move disagreeing parties to the conversation table

وأجمع الأطراف المختلفة على طاولة الحوار

to bridge misunderstandings.

لتجاوز سوء الفهم.

I know that listening to one another will not magically solve all problems.

وأنا أعلم أن الاستماع إلى بعضنا البعض، لن يحل جميع المشاكل.

But it will give a chance to create avenues

بل هو فرصة،

to start to work together to solve many of humanity's problems.

للبدء في العمل سوياً، لحل العديد من مشاكل الإنسانية.

With my first play, "Silent Voices,"

مع أول مسرحياتي "الأصوات الصامتة"

based on interviews with victims of the Northern Uganda war

المبنية على مقابلات مع ضحايا الحرب في شمال أوغندا

between the government and Joseph Kony's LRA rebel group,

بين الحكومة وجماعة جوزيف كوني المتمردة،

I brought together victims, political leaders, religious leaders,

جمعت الضحايا، القادة السياسيين، الزعماء الدينيين،

cultural leaders, the Amnesty Commission and transitional justice leadership

القادة الثقافيين، لجنة العفو وقادة العدالة الانتقالية

for critical conversations on issues of justice for war crime victims --

بشأن حوار حاسم حول قضايا ضحايا جرائم الحرب -

the first of its kind in the history of Uganda.

الأول من نوعه في تاريخ أوغندا.

And so many powerful things happened,

وحدثت الكثير من الأشياء الأخرى،

that I can't even cover them all right now.

التي لا أستطيع الحديث عنها كلها الآن.

Victims were given the opportunity to sit at the table

طرح الضحايا فكرة الجلوس على طاولة النقاش

with Amnesty Commission leadership,

مع قادة لجنة العفو،

and they expressed the big injustice they suffered

وأعربوا عن الظلم الكبير الذي تعرضوا له

when the Commission ignored them

عندما تجاهلتهم اللجنة،

and instead facilitated the resettlement of the war perpetrators.

وقامت بتسهيل إعادة توطين مرتكبي الحرب.

And the Amnesty Commission acknowledged the victims' pain

اعترفت لجنة العفو بمعاناة الضحايا

and explained the thinking behind their flawed approaches.

وأوضحت كيف فكرت في هذه المقاربة الفاشلة.

But one of the things that has stayed with me

ومن الأشياء التي لازلت أتذكرها

is when, during my Northern Uganda tour of the play,

خلال جولة العرض المسرحي شمال أوغندا،

a man approached me and introduced himself

رجل اقترب مني وقدم نفسه

as a former rebel soldier of Joseph Kony.

كجندي سابق متمرد من جماعة جوزيف كوني.

He told me that he didn't want me to leave feeling disappointed,

وقال لي انه كان يتمنى أن أشعر دائما بخيبة الأمل،

due to some of what I considered inappropriate laughter.

نظرا لبعض ما أعتبره ضحكاً غير مناسب.

He explained that his was a laughter of embarrassment

وأوضح أنه كان ضحك عار،

and a recognition of his own embarrassment.

وتقديرا لجهوده في إحراج الخاصة.

He saw himself in the actors onstage

واعتبر أن مكانه على خشبة المسرح

and saw the meaninglessness of his past actions.

ورأى أن أفعاله الماضية كانت دون معنى.

So I say: share your truths.

لذلك أقول: شاركوا صدقكم.

Listen to one another's truths.

استمعوا إلى حقائق الآخرين.

You will discover a more powerfully uniting truth

سوف تكتشفون حقيقة أكثر وحدة وقوة،

in the middle ground.

في الوسط.

When I lived in the USA,

عندما كنت أعيش في أمريكا،

many of my American friends would be shocked at my ignorance

العديد من أصدقائي الأميركيين، انصدموا لعدم معرفتي

at fancy Western dishes like lasagna, for instance.

للأطباق الغربية الفاخرة مثل اللازانيا، على سبيل المثال.

And my question to them would be,

وسؤالي لهم كان،

"Well, do you know malakwang?"

"حسنا، هل تعرفون الملاكوانغ؟"

And then I would tell them about malakwang,

ثم أخبرتهم عنه، أنه

a fancy vegetable dish from my culture.

طبق خضروات فاخر من ثقافتي.

And they would tell me about lasagna.

وكانوا يتكلمون عن اللازانيا.

And we would leave richer and fuller individuals.

سنترك الأغنياء والأفراد كاملي الأوصاف.

Therefore, share your recipe truth.

لذلك، فمشاركة حقيقة وصفتك.

It makes for a better meal.

يجعلها وجبة أفضل.
