How I use art to bridge misunderstanding | Adong Judith

I'm a writer-director who tells social-change stories,

من نووسەر و دەرهێنەرم، چیڕۆكی گۆڕانكارییە كۆمەڵایەتییەكانتان بۆ باس دەکەم،

because I believe stories touch and move us.

چونكە پێم وایە چیڕۆكەكان فێرمان دەکەن و هەستمان دەجولێنن.

Stories humanize and teach us to empathize.

هەروەها فێری هەست بە مرۆڤبوون، دڵسۆزیمان دەکەن

Stories change us.

و دەمان گۆڕن.

کاتێک خەریکی نوسین و دەڕهێنانی شانۆگەریم،

When I write and direct plays,

I'm amplifying voices of disadvantaged groups,

دەنگی گروپە زیان بەڕکەوتووەکان دەگەیەنم،

I'm fighting the self-censorship

من بەرەنگاری یاسای سانسۆرکەرەکان کە لە

that has kept many Ugandan artists away from social, political theater

لایەن ئیدی ئەمین سەرۆکی پێشووی ئۆگەندا بۆ چەوسادنەوە و سنوردارکردنی هونەرمەندانی،

since the persecution of artists by former Ugandan president, Idi Amin.

ئۆگەندا داناوە لە ڕووی کۆمەلایەتی و سیاسی دەبمەوە.

And most importantly, I am breaking the silence

لە هەمووی گرنگتر، بێدەنگیم دەشكێنم

and provoking meaningful conversations on taboo issues,

و گفتوگۆێكی پڕ مانا سەبارەت بە کێشە قەدەغەکراوەکان دەوروژێنم،

where often "Silence is golden" is the rule of thumb.

هەر چەندە بێدەنگی باشترین چارەسەرە.

Conversations are important

گفتوگۆکان گرنگن

because they inform and challenge our minds to think,

چونكە مێشکمان هۆشیار و ناچار دەكات بیر بکەینەوە،

and change starts with thinking.

کاری لەپێشینەمان گۆڕانکارییە لە بیر و هزرماندا.

One of my struggles with activism is its often one-sided nature

یەكێك لە گرفتەکانم لەگەڵ چالاكبوونم تەنها یەک لایەنی بەر چاوە

that blinds us to alternative view,

و لایەنەکانی تر شاراوەن،

that numbs our empathy,

توانایی هەستەکانمان کەم دەکاتەوە،

that makes us view those who see issues differently

وامان لێدەکات ئەو کەسانەی کێشەکان بە شێوەیەکی جیاواز دەبینن

as ignorant, self-hating, brainwashed, sellout or plain stupid.

وەک نەزانێک، کەسێکی ڕق لە دڵ، سەر لێشێواو، خۆ فرۆش و گەمژە دێنە بەرچاو.

I believe no one is ignorant.

پێم وایە کەس نەزان نییە.

We are all experts, only in different fields.

هەر یەک لە ئێمە شارەزایەکی تایبەت لە بوارە جیاوازەکاندا هەیە.

And this is why, for me, the saying "stay in your truth" is misleading.

بۆیە "ڕاستگۆبە لەگەڵ خۆت" چەواشەکارە.

Because if you're staying in your truth,

چونکە ئەگەر تۆ لەگەڵ خۆت ڕاستگۆ بیت،

isn't it logical that the person you believe is wrong

ژیرانە نییە پێت وابێت کەسێک هەڵەیە

is also staying in their truth?

کە لەگەڵ خۆیی ڕاستگۆیە؟

So, what you have is two extremes

ئەگەر، دوو هەڵبژاردەت هەبێت

that shut out all possible avenues of conversations.

دەشێ هەموو ڕێگەکانی گفتوگۆ دابخرێت.

I create provocative theater and film to touch, humanize

شانۆ و فیلم دروست دەکەم بۆ نزیک بوونەوە لە مرۆڤایەتی

and move disagreeing parties to the conversation table

و کۆکردنەوەی لایەنە ناڕازییەکان بۆ سەرمێزی گفتوگۆ.

to bridge misunderstandings.

بۆ ئەوەی هەڵە تێگەیشتنەکان چارەسەر بکرێ.

I know that listening to one another will not magically solve all problems.

دەزانم گوێگرتن لە یەکتری ڕاستەوخۆ هەموو کێشەکان چارەسەر ناکات.

But it will give a chance to create avenues

بەڵام دەرفەتی دروستکردنی ڕێگەیەکی تر

to start to work together to solve many of humanity's problems.

بۆ کارکردن بە یەکەوە بۆ چارەسەرکردنی زۆربەی کێشە کۆمەڵایەتیەکان دەدات .

With my first play, "Silent Voices,"

یەکەمین شانۆم ،"دەنگە خامۆشەکان"،

based on interviews with victims of the Northern Uganda war

ناوەڕۆکی شانۆکە: چاوپێکەوتنێکە لەگەڵ قوربانییانی شەری باکوری ئۆگەندا

between the government and Joseph Kony's LRA rebel group,

لە نێوان دەسەڵات و جۆسێف کۆنیس ‏LRAدەستەی یاخی،

I brought together victims, political leaders, religious leaders,

قوربانییەکان و سەرکردە سیاسی، ئاینی،

cultural leaders, the Amnesty Commission and transitional justice leadership

پێشەوا کلتورییەکان، سەرۆکی دەستەی لێخۆشبوون و دادپەروەری پێکەوە هێنان.

for critical conversations on issues of justice for war crime victims --

بۆ گفتوگۆیەکی دادپەروەر و ڕەخنەئامێز لەسەر تاوانبارانی قوربانیانی جەنگ،

the first of its kind in the history of Uganda.

کە لە مێژووی شانۆی ئۆگەندی شێوەی نییە.

And so many powerful things happened,

شتگەلێکی جیاواز ڕوویاندا

that I can't even cover them all right now.

ئێستا ناتوانم باسیان بکەم.

Victims were given the opportunity to sit at the table

قوربانییان دەرفەتێکیان پێدرا تا لەسەر مێزی گفتوگۆ

with Amnesty Commission leadership,

لەگەڵ سەرۆکی دەستەی لێخۆشبوونی گشتی دابنیشن،

and they expressed the big injustice they suffered

بۆ باس کردنی ئەم ئازارانەی کە چەشتبوویان

when the Commission ignored them

کاتێک لێژنەکە ئەوانی پشتگوێ خستبوو

and instead facilitated the resettlement of the war perpetrators.

لەجیاتی ئاسان کردن و دابین کردنی شوێنی حەوانەوە بۆ قوربانیانی جەنگ.

And the Amnesty Commission acknowledged the victims' pain

دەستەی لێخۆشبوون دانی بە ئازاری ئەم قوربانیانەدا نا

and explained the thinking behind their flawed approaches.

و بۆیان ڕوونکردنەوە کە هەڵە تێگەیشتنێک هەبووە.

But one of the things that has stayed with me

بەڵام یەکێک لەم یادەوەریانەی کە لە بیرم ناچێتەوە:

is when, during my Northern Uganda tour of the play,

کاتێ بۆ نمایش کردنی شانۆکەم سەردانی باکوری ئۆگەندەم کرد،

a man approached me and introduced himself

پیاوێک لێم هاتە پێش و خۆی

as a former rebel soldier of Joseph Kony.

وەک سەربازێکی پێشوی یاخی بووی جۆزێف کۆنی پێ ناساندم.

پێی گووتم کە نایەوێت هەست بە بێهیوابوون بکەم،

He told me that he didn't want me to leave feeling disappointed,

due to some of what I considered inappropriate laughter.

بەهۆی زۆری پێکەنینە نەشیاوەکانی کاتی نمایشەکە.

He explained that his was a laughter of embarrassment

ڕوونی کردەوە ئەوە پێکەنینی شەرمەزاریە

and a recognition of his own embarrassment.

و ئەمە خود شەرمەزاریە.

He saw himself in the actors onstage

لەسەر تەختی شانۆ خۆی وەک ئەکتەرێک دەهاتە بەرچاو و

and saw the meaninglessness of his past actions.

و کارە بێ ماناکانی پێشووی دەهاتەوە یاد.

So I say: share your truths.

پێم گوت: ڕاستیەکان بخە ڕوو.

Listen to one another's truths.

گوێ بۆ ڕاستی یەکتر بگرن.

You will discover a more powerfully uniting truth

ڕاستیەکی بەهێزی کۆکەرەوە

in the middle ground.

لە هاوبەشیەکانمان دەدۆزینەوە.

When I lived in the USA,

کاتێک لە ئەمریکا دەژیام، زۆربەی هاوڕێ

many of my American friends would be shocked at my ignorance

ئەمریکییەکانم سەریان لە بێئاگایم

at fancy Western dishes like lasagna, for instance.

سەبارەت بەخواردنی لازانیای رۆژئاوایی سوڕما بوو.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

And my question to them would be,

منیش لێم دەپرسین:

"Well, do you know malakwang?"

"باشە، دەزانن مالاکوانگ چییە؟"

And then I would tell them about malakwang,

دواتر باسی ئەم خواردنەم بۆ دەکردن

a fancy vegetable dish from my culture.

خواردنێکی گیایی کەلتوری وڵاتەکەمە.

And they would tell me about lasagna.

ئەوانیش باسی لازانیایان بۆ دەکردم.

And we would leave richer and fuller individuals.

هەر یەک لە ئێمە زیاتر فێر دەبووین و ئاسودەتر دەبووین.

Therefore, share your recipe truth.

کەواتە، ڕەچەتەی ڕاستیەکانت بخە ڕوو.

It makes for a better meal.

بۆ ئەوەی ژەمێکی باشتر دروست بێت.
