I'm a writer-director who tells social-change stories,

मैं एक लेखक और निर्देषक हूँ, जो सामाजिक बदलाव की कहानियाँ सुनाती है|

because I believe stories touch and move us.

क्युँकि मेँ समझती हूँ कि कहानियाँ हमारे मन को छूती हैं |

Stories humanize and teach us to empathize.

कहानियाँ हमें इन्सानियत और सहानुभूति सिखती हैं |

Stories change us.

कहानियाँ हममें परिवर्तन लाती हैं |

When I write and direct plays,

जब मैं नाटक लिखती हूँ,

I'm amplifying voices of disadvantaged groups,

मैं कमज़ोर समूहों को आवाज़ देती हूँ |

I'm fighting the self-censorship

मैं सेंसरशिप के विरुद्ध लड़ रही हूँ,

that has kept many Ugandan artists away from social, political theater

अनेक यूगांडा के कलाकार सामाजिक और राजनीतिक थिएटर से दूर रेहने लगे

since the persecution of artists by former Ugandan president, Idi Amin.

जब युगांडा के पूर्व राष्ट्रपति ईदी अमीन ने कलाकारों का उत्पीड़न किया |

And most importantly, I am breaking the silence

and provoking meaningful conversations on taboo issues,

और बात करना चाहती हूँ उन निषिद्ध मुद्दों पर,

where often "Silence is golden" is the rule of thumb.

Conversations are important

because they inform and challenge our minds to think,

and change starts with thinking.

One of my struggles with activism is its often one-sided nature

अक्सर सक्रियता की एक-तरफा प्रकृति मेरे लिये अक्सर एक संघर्ष बन जाती है |

that blinds us to alternative view,

येह हमे वैकल्पिक राय से अलग रखती है,

that numbs our empathy,

हमारी सहानुभूति सुन्न करती है,

that makes us view those who see issues differently

वैकल्पिक राय रखने वालों को हम

as ignorant, self-hating, brainwashed, sellout or plain stupid.

या तो अज्ञानी, स्वयं से नफरत करने वाले, गद्दार या फिर मंदबुद्धि समझते है|

I believe no one is ignorant.

मेरा मानना ​​है कि कोई भी अज्ञानी नहीं है।

We are all experts, only in different fields.

And this is why, for me, the saying "stay in your truth" is misleading.

और यही कारण है कि, मेरे लिए यह कह "अपने सच्चाई में रहो " भ्रामक है |

Because if you're staying in your truth,

क्यूँकि अगर आप अपनी सच्चाई में ही सीमित रहोगे

isn't it logical that the person you believe is wrong

is also staying in their truth?

So, what you have is two extremes

that shut out all possible avenues of conversations.

I create provocative theater and film to touch, humanize

मैं उत्तेजक नाटक और फिल्म बना रहीं हूँ जो असहमत दलों का मानवीकरण करें

and move disagreeing parties to the conversation table

और उन्हें स्थानांतरित करें वार्तालाप तालिका में

to bridge misunderstandings.

जिससे उन्की ग़लतफ़हमिया दूर हों | मुझे पता है कि

I know that listening to one another will not magically solve all problems.

केवल एक दूसरे के विचार सुनने से सभी समस्याओं का जादुई हल नहीं होगा|

But it will give a chance to create avenues

लेकिन यह ज़रिया होगा एक साथ मिलकर

to start to work together to solve many of humanity's problems.

मानवता की अनेक समस्याओं को हल करने का |

With my first play, "Silent Voices,"

मेरा प्रथम नाटक , "मूक आवाज़ें", उत्तर युगांडा युद्ध के

based on interviews with victims of the Northern Uganda war

पीड़ितों के साथ साक्षात्कार पर आधारित है, जो कि सरकार और जोसफ कोनी के

between the government and Joseph Kony's LRA rebel group,

एलआरए विद्रोही समूह के बीच चल रहा था |

I brought together victims, political leaders, religious leaders,

cultural leaders, the Amnesty Commission and transitional justice leadership

for critical conversations on issues of justice for war crime victims --

और उन मुद्दों पर बातचीत की जिससे युद्ध अपराध पीड़ितों को न्याय मिले |

the first of its kind in the history of Uganda.

यूगांडा के इतिहास में ऐसा पहली बार हुआ है |

And so many powerful things happened,

कई शक्तिशाली परिमाण निकले

that I can't even cover them all right now.

और उन सबको इस मंच पर शामिल करना मुष्किल होगा

Victims were given the opportunity to sit at the table

युद्ध के पीड़ितों को अवसर दिया गया एम्नेस्टी कमीशन नेतृत्व को

with Amnesty Commission leadership,

and they expressed the big injustice they suffered

when the Commission ignored them

and instead facilitated the resettlement of the war perpetrators.

And the Amnesty Commission acknowledged the victims' pain

and explained the thinking behind their flawed approaches.

But one of the things that has stayed with me

is when, during my Northern Uganda tour of the play,

a man approached me and introduced himself

as a former rebel soldier of Joseph Kony.

He told me that he didn't want me to leave feeling disappointed,

due to some of what I considered inappropriate laughter.

He explained that his was a laughter of embarrassment

and a recognition of his own embarrassment.

He saw himself in the actors onstage

So I say: share your truths.

इसी लिये मेरा केहना है: अपनी सच्चाइयों को सबके साथ बाँटे|

Listen to one another's truths.

You will discover a more powerfully uniting truth

मध्याँतर में आपको सशक्त रूप से

in the middle ground.

संयुक्त सत्य का एहसास होगा|

When I lived in the USA,

जब मैं अमरीका में रेहती थी

many of my American friends would be shocked at my ignorance

मेरे कई अमेरिकी मित्र अक्सर चौक जाते थे

at fancy Western dishes like lasagna, for instance.

लैसग्ना जैसे पश्चिमी व्यंजन के प्रति मेरी अज्ञानता को देखकर|

(Laughter)

(हँसी)

And my question to them would be,

और फिर मैं उनसे पूछती थी,

"Well, do you know malakwang?"

"क्या आपको पता है मलकवंग के बारे में?"

And then I would tell them about malakwang,

और फिर मैं उन्हें मलकवंग के बारे में बताती थी,

a fancy vegetable dish from my culture.

जो की मेरी संस्कृति में एक अनोखी सब्जी से बना पकवान है |

And they would tell me about lasagna.

और वह मुझे लज़ान्या के बारे में बताते थे|

And we would leave richer and fuller individuals.

और हम सब ज्ञान के साथ निकलेंगे|

Therefore, share your recipe truth.

इसलिए अपनी सच्चाई के नुस्खे सबके साथ बाँटे|

It makes for a better meal.

यह एक बेहतर भोजन बनाता है|
