How I use art to bridge misunderstanding | Adong Judith

I'm a writer-director who tells social-change stories,

because I believe stories touch and move us.

Stories humanize and teach us to empathize.

When I write and direct plays,

I'm amplifying voices of disadvantaged groups,

사회적 약자들을 위해 목소리를 키우고

I'm fighting the self-censorship

우간다 예술가들을 사회적 그리고 정치적으로 억압시켜왔던

that has kept many Ugandan artists away from social, political theater

자기검열과 맞서 싸우고 있습니다.

since the persecution of artists by former Ugandan president, Idi Amin.

바로 이디 아민(우간다 악명 높은 독재자)이 예술가들을 응징한 이후로부터 말이죠.

And most importantly, I am breaking the silence

그리고 무엇보다도, 전 침묵을 깨뜨리고

and provoking meaningful conversations on taboo issues,

금기시되는 의미있는 대화를 시작할 수 있게 부추겼어요.

where often "Silence is golden" is the rule of thumb.

"침묵이 금"이라는 확고한 룰이 있는 환경에서 말입니다.

Conversations are important

대화는 중요합니다.

because they inform and challenge our minds to think,

왜냐하면 대화는 우리를 교육시키고 생각을 하도록 합니다.

and change starts with thinking.

그리고 변화는 생각으로부터 시작하죠.

One of my struggles with activism is its often one-sided nature

제가 행동주의에 대해 애를 먹는건, 자주 편향적인 경향이 있는 건데

that blinds us to alternative view,

그 경향은 우리의 다양한 시야를 막고

that numbs our empathy,

우리를 공감에 무감각하게 만들고

that makes us view those who see issues differently

특정 주제에 대해 다른 의견을 가지고 있는 사람들을

as ignorant, self-hating, brainwashed, sellout or plain stupid.

무지하고, 자신을 혐오하고, 세뇌되고, 멍청하고, 바보같다고 단정해버리게 합니다.

I believe no one is ignorant.

저는 그 누구도 절대 무지하다고 생각하지 않습니다.

We are all experts, only in different fields.

우리는 모두 전문가입니다, 다만 각기 분야가 다를 뿐이죠.

And this is why, for me, the saying "stay in your truth" is misleading.

그래서 저에게 있어, "당신의 진실 안에서 살아라"라는 말은

오해의 소지가 있다고 생각합니다.

Because if you're staying in your truth,

왜냐하면 여러분이 진실 안에 있다면

isn't it logical that the person you believe is wrong

논리적으로 봤을 때, 당신이 틀렸다고 외쳤던 그 사람도

is also staying in their truth?

그 사람의 진실 안에서 살고 있지 않을까요?

So, what you have is two extremes

이런 상황은 두 개의 양극단의 길에 서게 되고

that shut out all possible avenues of conversations.

가능한 모든 대화의 길을 차단시키게 됩니다.

I create provocative theater and film to touch, humanize

저는 자극적인 연극과 영화를 만들어 이견을 가진 저와 대립하는 사람들을

감동시키고, 인간성을 부여하며, 서로 대화를 통해

and move disagreeing parties to the conversation table

오해를 풀 수 있는 다리의 역할을 하게 만들고 있습니다.

to bridge misunderstandings.

I know that listening to one another will not magically solve all problems.

저는 경청을 한다고 문제가 마법처럼 없어지지 않는다는 것을 알고 있습니다.

But it will give a chance to create avenues

하지만 이것은 우리가 인류의 문제를

to start to work together to solve many of humanity's problems.

함께 해결해 나갈 기회를 얻게 해 줄 것입니다.

With my first play, "Silent Voices,"

저의 첫 작품, "침묵의 목소리들"은

based on interviews with victims of the Northern Uganda war

정부와 조지프 코니의 '신의 저항군 테러 그룹' 사이에서 일어난

between the government and Joseph Kony's LRA rebel group,

북부 우간다 전쟁의 피해자들의 인터뷰로 이루어져있습니다.

I brought together victims, political leaders, religious leaders,

저는 피해자들, 정치 지도자들, 종교 지도자들

cultural leaders, the Amnesty Commission and transitional justice leadership

문화계 지도자들, 사면심사위원회와 임시 정의 대표직들을 한 곳에 모아

for critical conversations on issues of justice for war crime victims --

그들이 전쟁 범죄 피해자들을 위한 진지한 대화를 하게 하였습니다.

the first of its kind in the history of Uganda.

이것은 우간다 역사에서 처음 있는 일이었습니다.

And so many powerful things happened,

그후로 엄청난 일들이 일어났습니다.

that I can't even cover them all right now.

제가 지금 다 언급하지 못할 정도로요.

Victims were given the opportunity to sit at the table

피해자들은 사면심사위원회 관계자들과 함께

한 자리에 앉을 기회를 갖게 됐으며

with Amnesty Commission leadership,

and they expressed the big injustice they suffered

본인들이 겪었던 부당함의 고통을 토로할 수 있었습니다.

when the Commission ignored them

바로 위원회가 피해자인 본인들을 무시하고

and instead facilitated the resettlement of the war perpetrators.

전쟁 가해자들의 재정착을 촉진하며 도울 당시에 느낀 부당함을요.

And the Amnesty Commission acknowledged the victims' pain

사면심사위원회는 피해자들의 고통을 인정하고

and explained the thinking behind their flawed approaches.

그들의 잘못된 접근방식에 대한 생각을 설명을 해줬습니다.

But one of the things that has stayed with me

하지만 그 중에서 아직도 기억나는 것 중 하나는

is when, during my Northern Uganda tour of the play,

제가 작품 투어로 북부 우간다를 여행을 다닐 당시

a man approached me and introduced himself

어떤 남자가 저에게 다가와서는

as a former rebel soldier of Joseph Kony.

자신이 전 조지프 코니의 반란군이었다고 소개했습니다.

He told me that he didn't want me to leave feeling disappointed,

그는 제가 본인이 부적절한 웃음을 짓고 있다고 생각을 하는 것 때문에

due to some of what I considered inappropriate laughter.

실망하며 돌아가는 것을 원하지 않는다고 말했습니다.

He explained that his was a laughter of embarrassment

그는 그의 웃음이 '부끄러움의 웃음'이라고 설명했습니다.

and a recognition of his own embarrassment.

자신도 본인이 부끄럽다고 시인했습니다.

He saw himself in the actors onstage

그는 연극 배우들에게서 자신의 모습을 보았고

and saw the meaninglessness of his past actions.

자신이 저지른 과거의 의미 없는 행동들을 보았다고 했습니다.

So I say: share your truths.

그래서 저는 말했습니다, "당신의 진심을 공유해주세요.

Listen to one another's truths.

그리고 다른 이들의 진심을 들어주세요.

You will discover a more powerfully uniting truth

그렇다면 당신은 하나로 뭉쳐진 더욱 커다란 진실들 사이에서

in the middle ground.

절충점을 발견할 수 있을 거예요."

When I lived in the USA,

제가 미국에서 살 당시에 친하게 지내던

many of my American friends would be shocked at my ignorance

몇 몇의 친구들은 제가 라자냐 같은 고급진 음식을 모른다고 하면

at fancy Western dishes like lasagna, for instance.

저의 무지함에 엄청 놀랄 거예요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And my question to them would be,

그리고 그들에게 이렇게 물을 거예요.

"Well, do you know malakwang?"

"그러면, 너 혹시 말라쾅(아프리카 야채 요리)을 아니?"

And then I would tell them about malakwang,

그런 다음 저는 그들에게 말라쾅을

a fancy vegetable dish from my culture.

우리 나라의 고급 야채 요리라고 소개할 거예요.

And they would tell me about lasagna.

그럼 그들은 제게 라자냐에 대해서 설명해주겠죠.

And we would leave richer and fuller individuals.

그럼 우리는 더 풍부하고 충만한 개개인이 될 겁니다.

Therefore, share your recipe truth.

그러니까 여러분도 진심을 나누세요.

It makes for a better meal.

그럼 더 성장을 하게 될 겁니다.
