I'm a writer-director who tells social-change stories,

because I believe stories touch and move us.

Stories humanize and teach us to empathize.

Stories change us.

When I write and direct plays,

私が戯曲を書き監督する時

I'm amplifying voices of disadvantaged groups,

社会的弱者の声を増幅して伝えています

I'm fighting the self-censorship

私は自己検閲と闘っています

that has kept many Ugandan artists away from social, political theater

自己検閲のため 多くのウガンダ人芸術家が 社会的・政治的活動を避けてきました

since the persecution of artists by former Ugandan president, Idi Amin.

元ウガンダ大統領のイディ・アミンが アーティストを迫害して以来です

And most importantly, I am breaking the silence

and provoking meaningful conversations on taboo issues,

where often "Silence is golden" is the rule of thumb.

Conversations are important

対話は大切なものです

because they inform and challenge our minds to think,

and change starts with thinking.

考えることから変化は始まります

One of my struggles with activism is its often one-sided nature

行動している時にぶつかる私の悩みの１つは 度々視点が一方的になり

that blinds us to alternative view,

他の見方ができなくなり

that numbs our empathy,

共感性が麻痺することです

that makes us view those who see issues differently

それは私達に 問題を違う視点から見ている人を

as ignorant, self-hating, brainwashed, sellout or plain stupid.

無知 自己嫌悪的 洗脳されている 裏切り者 あるいはただの間抜けだと思わせてしまいます

I believe no one is ignorant.

私は無知な人などいないと信じています

We are all experts, only in different fields.

私達は皆 それぞれ違う分野の専門家なのです

And this is why, for me, the saying "stay in your truth" is misleading.

「自分の真実にとどまれ」との格言が 誤解を招くと私が思う理由はそれです

Because if you're staying in your truth,

なぜなら あなたが 自分の真実にとどまる限り

isn't it logical that the person you believe is wrong

あなたが 間違っていると信じている人も

is also staying in their truth?

その人の真実にとどまっていることに なりませんか？

So, what you have is two extremes

つまりそこには２つの極論しかなく

that shut out all possible avenues of conversations.

それが対話への全ての可能性を 閉ざしてしまいます

I create provocative theater and film to touch, humanize

私は心の琴線に触れ 人間的で

and move disagreeing parties to the conversation table

意見の異なる人々に対話を促すような 挑戦的な演劇や映画を作って

to bridge misunderstandings.

誤解に橋渡ししたいのです

I know that listening to one another will not magically solve all problems.

互いの話を聞くことで 魔法のように 全ての問題が解決するとは思っていません

But it will give a chance to create avenues

しかし機会を作るチャンスにはなります

to start to work together to solve many of humanity's problems.

人類の多くの問題を解決する為に 手を取り合うきっかけになります

With my first play, "Silent Voices,"

私の作った初めての戯曲 『Silent Voices（声なき声）』 は

based on interviews with victims of the Northern Uganda war

ウガンダ北部であった戦争の 被害者へのインタビューを基にしています

between the government and Joseph Kony's LRA rebel group,

これは政府とジョセフ・コニーが指揮する 「神の抵抗軍」との戦争でした

I brought together victims, political leaders, religious leaders,

私は様々な人を一堂に集めました 被害者 政治指導者 宗教の指導者達

cultural leaders, the Amnesty Commission and transitional justice leadership

文化的リーダー 恩赦委員会の委員 そして移行期の司法指導者たちです

for critical conversations on issues of justice for war crime victims --

戦争被害者のための正義について 重要な議論をするためです

the first of its kind in the history of Uganda.

ウガンダの歴史上類を見ないものでした

And so many powerful things happened,

that I can't even cover them all right now.

Victims were given the opportunity to sit at the table

被害者たちは 恩赦委員会の指導者との

with Amnesty Commission leadership,

and they expressed the big injustice they suffered

自らが被った大きな不公正を表明しました

when the Commission ignored them

不公正を被ったのは 恩赦委員会が彼らを無視し

and instead facilitated the resettlement of the war perpetrators.

代わりに戦争犯罪者たちの帰還を 促したためだったのです

And the Amnesty Commission acknowledged the victims' pain

恩赦委員会は被害者の苦痛を認め

and explained the thinking behind their flawed approaches.

誤った対応の背景に どんな考えがあったかを説明しました

But one of the things that has stayed with me

しかし私の頭から離れない出来事があります

is when, during my Northern Uganda tour of the play,

ウガンダ北部での演劇公演中でした

a man approached me and introduced himself

１人の男性が私に近づいてきて 自己紹介をしました

as a former rebel soldier of Joseph Kony.

かつてジョセフ・コニーの反乱軍の 兵士でした

He told me that he didn't want me to leave feeling disappointed,

彼は私にがっかりしないでほしいと言いました

due to some of what I considered inappropriate laughter.

観客からの 不謹慎とも感じられた 笑いのことでした

He explained that his was a laughter of embarrassment

彼の笑いは 恥ずかしさのためだったと

and a recognition of his own embarrassment.

恥ずかしかった事を自認していると 説明してくれました

He saw himself in the actors onstage

彼は舞台上の役者達の中に自らを見出し

and saw the meaninglessness of his past actions.

過去の行いの無意味さを知ったのです

So I say: share your truths.

だから私は言います 「あなたにとっての真実を共有しよう」

Listen to one another's truths.

「互いの真実に耳を傾けよう」と

You will discover a more powerfully uniting truth

２人をより深く結びつける真実が 両者の間にあることに

気づくでしょう

in the middle ground.

When I lived in the USA,

私がアメリカに住んでいた時のこと

many of my American friends would be shocked at my ignorance

多くのアメリカ人の友人が 「洒落た」西洋料理―

at fancy Western dishes like lasagna, for instance.

例えばラザーニャを 私が知らなかった事に驚きました

(Laughter)

And my question to them would be,

そこで私から彼らへの質問は

「じゃあ malakwang（マラクワン） を知ってる？」でした

"Well, do you know malakwang?"

And then I would tell them about malakwang,

そして彼らにマラクワンについて説明します

a fancy vegetable dish from my culture.

私の文化での 「洒落た」野菜料理です

And they would tell me about lasagna.

彼らは私にラザーニャについて教えてくれます

And we would leave richer and fuller individuals.

そうすることで 私達はより豊かで 成熟した人間になります

Therefore, share your recipe truth.

つまり 互いのレシピの真実を共有すれば

It makes for a better meal.

より良い食事になるのです
