You know, when I looked at the profile of the audience here,

ده‌زانن ، کاتێک که‌سه‌یری دۆسیه‌ی ناسنامه‌ی ئاماده‌بوانی ئێرەم کرد

with their connotations and design, in all its forms,

له‌گه‌ڵ پێناسه‌ و نه‌خشه‌کانیان ، له‌ هه‌موو شێوه‌کان

and with so much and so many people working

لەگە‌ڵ زۆری ژماره‌ی که‌سه‌کان که‌ کارده‌که‌ن

on collaborative and networks, and so on, that I wanted to tell you,

له‌ کاره‌ هه‌ره‌وه‌زیه‌کان و ده‌زگاکاندا ، ویستم ئاگادارتان بکه‌مه‌وه‌

I wanted to build an argument for primary education

که‌ ئاره‌زووم له‌ دروستکردنی گفتوگۆیەکە‌ لە بارەی پەروەردەی سەرەتاییەوە

in a very specific context.

له‌ چوارچێوه‌یه‌کی دیاری کراودا

In order to do that in 20 minutes, I have to bring out four ideas --

بۆ جێبه‌جێ کردنی ئه‌وکاره‌ له‌ماوه‌ی 20 خوله‌کدا پێویسته‌ چوار بیرۆکه‌ باس بکەم

it's like four pieces of a puzzle.

که‌ له‌ شێوه‌ی مه‌ته‌ڵێکی چوار پارچه‌ ده‌چێت

And if I succeed in doing that,

ئه‌گه‌ر هاتوو سه‌رکه‌وتوو بووم له‌ ئەنجام دانی ئەوە

maybe you would go back with the thought

پێدەچێت بە بیرۆکەیەکەوە بچنە ماڵەوە

that you could build on, and perhaps help me do my work.

کە دواتر کاری لەسەر بکەن، وه‌ یان له‌وانه‌یه‌ یارمه‌تیم بده‌ن له‌ کردنی کاره‌که‌مدا

The first piece of the puzzle is remoteness

یه‌که‌م پارچه‌ی ئه‌م بیرۆکه‌یه‌ بریتیه‌ له‌ دووری و

and the quality of education.

کوالیتی فێرکردن

Now, by remoteness, I mean two or three different kinds of things.

ئێستا، مه‌به‌ستم له‌ دووری، دوو شت یان سێ شتی جیاوازه‌

Of course, remoteness in its normal sense, which means

له‌ ڕاستیدا ، پێناسه‌ی دووری به‌ مانا ئاسانە‌که‌ی ، ئه‌وه‌یه‌

that as you go further and further away

که‌ هه‌رچەندە زیاتر و زیاتربڕۆیت

from an urban center, you get to remoter areas.

له‌ ناوەڕاستی شارەوە ، ئه‌گه‌یت به‌ ناوچە دوور ترەکان

What happens to education?

ئەی کەواتە چی به‌سه‌ر پەروەردە دا دێت ؟

The second, or a different kind of remoteness

جۆری دووه‌م یاخود جۆرێکی تری دووری

is that within the large metropolitan areas all over the world,

ئەوەیە کە لە هەموو پایتەختە گەورەکاندا لە سەر تا سەری جیهان

you have pockets, like slums, or shantytowns, or poorer areas,

چه‌ند ناوچه‌یه‌کت هه‌یه‌ وه‌کو گه‌ڕه‌که‌ هه‌ژاره‌کان یاخود شاره‌ دروستکراوه‌کان له‌ پلێت، یاخود ناوچه‌ هه‌ژارنشینەکان

which are socially and economically remote

کە لە ڕووی کۆمەڵایەتی و ئابورییەوە

from the rest of the city, so it's us and them.

لە چاو ناوچەکانی تری شار دابڕاون، کەواتە کارەکە دەکەوێتە نێوان ئێمە و ئەوانەوە

What happens to education in that context?

چی به‌سه‌ر پەروەردەدا دێت له‌م پێگه‌یه‌دا ؟

So keep both of those ideas of remoteness.

کەواتە با ئەم دوو بیرۆکەیەتان لەسەر دووری بیر بمێنێت

We made a guess. The guess was that schools in remote areas

ئێمە شتێکمان هێنایە پێش چاوی خۆمان، وتمان قوتابخانەی ناوچە دوورەکان

do not have good enough teachers.

بە پێی پێویست مامۆستای باشیان نییە

If they do have, they cannot retain those teachers.

وه‌ ئه‌گه‌ر مامۆستای باشیشیان هەبێت، ناتوانن لای خۆیان بیانهێڵنەوە

They do not have good enough infrastructure.

چونکە تەواوی کەرەستەی سەرەکی خوێندنیان نییە

And if they had some infrastructure,

ئەگەر کەرەستەی سەرەکیشیان هەبێت

they have difficulty maintaining it.

ناتوانن بە باشی ڕایان بگرن

But I wanted to check if this is true. So what I did last year was

به‌ڵام ویستم بزانم کە ئاخۆ ئه‌مه‌ راسته‌، له‌به‌ر ئه‌وه‌ له‌ساڵی رابردودا‌

we hired a car, looked up on Google,

ئۆتۆمبیلێکمان بە کرێ گرت، له‌ گۆگڵ گه‌ڕاین

found a route into northern India from New Delhi

لە(نیودەلهی)یەوە ڕێگەیەکمان دۆزییەوە بۆ باکوری هند

which, you know, which did not cross any big cities

وه‌ک هه‌مووتان ده‌زانن ڕێگاکە بەناو هیچ شارێکی گەورەدا ناڕوات

or any big metropolitan centers. Drove out about 300 kilometers,

یاخود بە هیچ پایتەختێکی گەورەدا تێ ناپەڕێت، بۆ نزیکەی( ٣٠٠کم) بەسەیارە ڕۆیشتین

and wherever we found a school, administered a set of standard tests,

وه‌ هه‌رکاتێک قوتابخانه‌مان بهاتایەتە بەرچاو ، تاقیکردنه‌وه‌یه‌کی ئاساییمان ده‌کردن

and then took those test results and plotted them on a graph.

پاشان ئه‌نجامی تاقیکردنه‌وه‌که‌مان ده‌خسته‌ سه‌ر هێڵکاریه‌ک

The graph was interesting, although you need to consider it carefully.

وێنه‌ی هێڵکاریه‌که‌ زۆر سه‌رنج ڕاکێش بوو ، له‌گه‌ڵ ئه‌وه‌شدا پێویستی دەکرد کە زۆر بە وریاییەوە لێی بڕوانین

I mean, this is a very small sample; you should not generalize from it.

مه‌به‌ستم ئەوەیە، ئەمە نمونەیەکی بچوکە، ناکرێت گشتگیری بکەین

But it was quite obvious, quite clear,

لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا ئەوە بە تەواوەتی ئاشکراو ڕوونە

that for this particular route that I had taken,

کە ئەو ڕێگا تایبەتەی من پێیدا دەڕۆشتم

the remoter the school was, the worse its results seemed to be.

هه‌رچه‌نده‌ قوتابخانه‌که‌ دوورتر بوایە، ئه‌وا ئه‌نجامه‌که‌ی خراپتر دەبوو

That seemed a little damning,

ئەمە شتێکی ناخۆش بوو

and I tried to correlate it with things like infrastructure,

هه‌وڵمدا ئه‌و دەر ئەنجامانە ببه‌ستمەوە بە ژێرخانی ئابوورییەوە

or with the availability of electricity, and things like that.

.یاخود بە کارەبا، یان هەرشتێکی تری لەو بابەتە

To my surprise, it did not correlate.

بە سەرسوڕمانەوە هیچ جۆرە پەیوەندییەک نەبوو لە نێوان ئەنجامەکان و ئەو شتانەی کە باسم کردن

It did not correlate with the size of classrooms.

هیچ پەیوەندییەکیشی نەبوو بە قەبارەی هۆڵەکانی خوێندنەوە

It did not correlate with the quality of the infrastructure.

وه‌هیچ په‌یوه‌ندیه‌کیشی نه‌بوو بە ژێرخانی ئابوورییەوە

It did not correlate with the poverty levels. It did not correlate.

!هیچ پەیوەندییەکی بە هەژارییەوە نەبوو، هیچ پەیوەندییەک

But what happened was that when I administered a questionnaire

به‌ڵام ئه‌وه‌ی که‌ ڕویدا ئەوەبوو کە کاتێک دەستم کرد بە ڕاپرسییەک

to each of these schools, with one single question for the teachers -- which was,

لە هەریەک له‌و قوتابخانانه‌دا ، لکە یەک پرسیاری تێدا بوو بۆ مامۆستاکان، ئەویش دەیگوت

"Would you like to move to an urban, metropolitan area?" --

"ئایا ده‌ته‌وێت بگوێزرێیته‌وه‌ بۆ شارەکان ؟ پایته‌خته‌کان؟ "

69 percent of them said yes. And as you can see from that,

لە سەدا ٦٩ ی مامۆستاکان دەیانگوت بەڵێ، لەمەوە تێ دەگەن

they say yes just a little bit out of Delhi,

کە ئەگەر یەک تۆز لە دەلهی دوور کەونەوە دەڵێن بەڵێ

and they say no when you hit the rich suburbs of Delhi --

هه‌روه‌ها ده‌ڵێن نه‌خێر ئەگەر بێت و له‌ ناوجه‌ ده‌وڵه‌مه‌نده‌کانی ده‌لهی بن

because, you know, those are relatively better off areas --

چونکە وەک دەازانن، ئەو ناوچانە باشترن

and then from 200 kilometers out of Delhi, the answer is consistently yes.

بە دووری 200کم لە ده‌ره‌وه‌ی ده‌لهی وه‌ڵامه‌که‌ هه‌موو کاتێک به‌ڵێیه‌

I would imagine that a teacher who comes or walks into class

من دەڵێم، ئەو مامۆستایانەی کە بە پێ دێن بۆ قوتابخانەکان

every day thinking that, I wish I was in some other school,

هه‌موو ڕۆژێک لە دڵی خۆیدا دەڵێت، خۆزگە لە قوتابخانەیەکی تر بومایە

probably has a deep impact on what happens to the results.

پێدەچێت ئەمە کاریگەری زۆری لەسەر ئەو ئەنجامە خراپانە هەبێت

So it looked as though teacher motivation and teacher migration

که‌واته‌ بە شێوەیەک لەم بارو دۆخی کۆچکردنی مامۆستیایان و هاندانەیان دەڕواندرێت کە

was a powerfully correlated thing with what was happening in primary schools,

هۆکارێکی سەرەکی بێت بۆ ئەو شتانەی کە لە قۆناغە سەرەتاییەکاندا ڕوو دەدات

as opposed to whether the children have enough to eat,

هیچ پەیوەندییەکی بەوەوە نی یە کە منداڵه‌کان خواردنی ته‌واویان هه‌بێت

and whether they are packed tightly into classrooms

لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا بە ڕێکوپێکی بچنە پۆلەکانیانەوە

and that sort of thing. It appears that way.

.یاخود شتی لەو بابەتە. شتەکان وا دەر دەکەون

When you take education and technology, then I find in the literature that,

کاتێک خۆت خوێندەوار دەکەیت و تەکنەلۆژیاکان بەکاردێنیت، لە نوسراوێکی ئەدەبیدا ئەوەم دۆزییەوە کە

you know, things like websites, collaborative environments --

خۆتان دەزانن شتی وەک ماڵپەڕەکان، یاخود ئەو کەشە هاوکارانەی تر وەک ڕادیۆ

you've been listening to all that in the morning --

کە هەموو کاتەکای بەیانی گوێتان لێ گرتوون

it's always piloted first in the best schools, the best urban schools,

وەک یەکەمین قوتابخانە تەماشا دەکرێن، باشترین قوتابخانەی شارەکانن

and, according to me, biases the result.

بە بۆچونی من، ئەمانەش هۆکارن

The literature -- one part of it, the scientific literature --

ئەدەبیات... بەشێکی ئەمە،کە ئەدەبی زانستییە

consistently blames ET as being over-hyped and under-performing.

هه‌موو کاتێک سه‌رزه‌نشتی ته‌کنه‌لۆجیای فێرکردن دەکات که‌ گوایه‌ ئه‌فسانه‌یه‌کی قوڵه‌ و هی ئەوە نی کاری پێ بکرێت

The teachers always say, well, it's fine, but it's too expensive for what it does.

مامۆستاکان هه‌موو کاتێک ده‌ڵێن شتێكی باشه‌ ، به‌ڵام به‌ به‌راورد کردنیان لەگەڵ خزمەتگوزارییەکانیان، زۆری تێ دەچێت

Because it's being piloted in a school where the students are already getting,

لەبەر ئەوەی لە خوێندنگەیەکدا تاقی دەکرێتەوە کە پێشتر قوتابی تێدا بووبێت

let's say, 80 percent of whatever they could do.

بابڵێین %80 ی قوتابییەکان دەتوانن هەرچییەک بێت بەکاری بهێنن

You put in this new super-duper technology, and now they get 83 percent.

هه‌ڵده‌ستین به‌ دانانی ئه‌م ته‌کنه‌لۆجیا فێڵاویه‌ و ئەوانیش % ٨٣ پێکدەهێنن

So the principal looks at it and says,

وه‌ سه‌رۆک سه‌یری ئەمە دەکات و دەڵێت

3 percent for 300,000 dollars? Forget it.

لە %٣ ی 300.000 دۆلار ؟ کاره‌که‌ له‌بیرخۆتبه‌ره‌وە

If you took the same technology and piloted it into one of those remote schools,

ئەگەر هەمان تەکنەلۆژیا لە یەکێک لە قوتابخانە دورە دەستەکاندا تاقی بکرێتەوە

where the score was 30 percent, and, let's say, took that up to 40 percent --

لەو کاتەدا ئەنجامەکان لە %٣٠ بوون و با بڵێین بەرز دەبێتەوە بۆ %٤٠ بە نزیکەیی

that will be a completely different thing.

کە بەتەواوی شتێکی جیاواز دەردەچێت

So the relative change that ET, Educational Technology, would make,

کەواتە گۆڕانە ڕێژەییەکە لە تەکنەلۆژیای فێرکاریدا دەگونجێت

would be far greater at the bottom of the pyramid than at the top,

گەورەتر بێت لە بنی هەڕەمەکە بە بەراورد لەگەڵ لوتکەکەیدا

but we seem to be doing it the other way about.

بەڵام ئێمە وا دیارە کە ئەو کارە بەشێوەیەکی تر ئەنجام دەدەین

So I came to this conclusion that ET should reach

کەواتە گەیشتم بەم دەرئەنجامە کە تەکنەلۆژیای فێرکاری پێویستە

the underprivileged first, not the other way about.

یەکەم جار بگاتە دەست ناوچە دورە دەستەکان، نەوەک بە پێچەوانەوە

And finally came the question of, how do you tackle teacher perception?

لە کۆتایدا پرسیارێک هەیە، کە چۆن مامەڵە لەگەڵ بۆچونی مامۆستایان دەکرێت؟

Whenever you go to a teacher and show them some technology,

هەرکاتێک بچیت بۆ لای مامۆستا و هەندێ لە تەکنەلۆژیای نیشان بدەیت

the teacher's first reaction is,

یەکەم کاردانەوەی مامۆستا ئەوەیە

you cannot replace a teacher with a machine -- it's impossible.

کە ناتوانیت جێگەی مامۆستا بە ئامێرێک بگریتەوە، ئەوە ئەستەمە

I don't know why it's impossible, but, even for a moment,

من نازانم بۆ ئەستەمە، بەڵام بۆ چرکەیەکیش

if you did assume that it's impossible -- I have a quotation from Sir Arthur C. Clarke,

ئەگەر وامان دانا کە ئەستەمە، وتەیەک هەیە لە لایەن ئارسەر سی کلارک

the science fiction writer whom I met in Colombo,

نوسەری ئەو خەیاڵە زانستییەی کە بینیم لە کۆڵۆمبییا

and he said something which completely solves this problem.

شتێکی وتووە کە بە تەواوی ئەم کێشەیە چارەسەر دەکات

He said a teacher than can be replaced by a machine, should be.

وتویەتی لەوانەیە ئامێرێک شوێنی مامۆستایەک بگرێتەوە

So, you know, it puts the teacher into a tough bind, you have to think.

کەواتە خۆتان دەزانن مامۆستای خستۆتە گێژاوێکی قورسەوە، پێویستە بیری لێ بکەیتەوە

Anyway, so I'm proposing that an alternative primary education,

بەهەرحاڵ، کەواتە من داوای جێگرەوەیەکی فێرکاری سەرەتایی دەکەم

whatever alternative you want, is required where schools don't exist,

هەموو جۆرە جێگرەوەیەک داواکراوە لە هەموو ئەو شوێنانەی کە قوتابخانەی لێ نییە

where schools are not good enough, where teachers are not available

ئەو شوێنانەی کە قوتابخانەکانیان باش نییە، وە هەروەها ئەو شوێنانەی مامۆستای لێ نییە

or where teachers are not good enough, for whatever reason.

یاخود لەو شوێنانەی کە مامۆستاکانی باش نین، لەبەر هەر هۆیەک بێت

If you happen to live in a part of the world where none of this applies,

ئەگەر وا ڕێکەوت کە تۆ لە بەشێک لەو جیهانەدا ژیایت کە هیچ لەوانەی تێدا نەبوو

then you don't need an alternative education.

ئەوا پێویستت بە جێگیر بوون نییە لە فێربووندا

So far I haven't come across such an area, except for one case. I won't name the area,

هەتا ئێستا شوێنێکی وام نەبینیوە، جگە لەیەک شوێن کە نامەوێت ناوەکەی بهێنم

but somewhere in the world people said, we don't have this problem,

بەڵام لە شوێنێکی جیهاندا خەڵک دەیوت کە ئەو کێشەیەمان نییە

because we have perfect teachers and perfect schools.

لەبەرئەوەی ئێمە قوتابخانەی باش و مامۆستای چاکمان هەیە

There are such areas, but -- anyway, I'd never heard that anywhere else.

ئەم شوێنانەش هەیە کە باشن، باڵام بەهەرحاڵ نەمبیستووە لە هیچ شوێنێکی تر ئەمە هەبێت

I'm going to talk about children and self-organization,

ئێستا من دەربارەی منداڵان و ڕێکخستنیان قسە دەکەم

and a set of experiments which sort of led to this idea

کۆمەڵێک لە تاقیکردنەوە گەیاندمییە ئەم بیرۆکەیەی

of what might an alternative education be like.

کە چی پێویستە بۆ ئەوەی فێرکردن جێگیر بکەین

They're called the hole-in-the-wall experiments.

پێیان دەڵێن تاقیکردنەوەی کونێک لە دیوار

I'll have to really rush through this. They're a set of experiments.

پێویستە لەم بابەتەدا خێرا بکەم، ئەوانە زنجیرەیەکن لە تاقیکردنەوە

The first one was done in New Delhi in 1999.

یەکەم تاقی کردنەوە لە نیودەلهی لە ساڵی ١٩٩٩ ئەنجام درا

And what we did over there was pretty much simple.

ئەوەی لەوێ کردمان زۆر ساکار بوو

I had an office in those days which bordered a slum, an urban slum,

نوسینگەیەکم هەبوو لەو ڕۆژانەدا لە شارێکی هەژار و گەڕەکێکی هەژار بوو

so there was a dividing wall between our office and the urban slum.

دیوارێکی هاوبەش هەبوو لە نێوان نوسینگەکەم و شوێنە هەژارەکە

They cut a hole inside that wall --

کونێکیان لەناو ئەو دیوارەدا دروست کرد

which is how it has got the name hole-in-the-wall --

بە هۆی ئەوەوە ناوی (کونێک لە دیوار)ی لێ نرا

and put a pretty powerful PC into that hole, sort of embedded into the wall

کۆمپیتەرێکی باشمان خستە ناو ئەو کونەوە، بە شێوەیەک جێگیرمان کرد لەناو دیوارەکەدا

so that its monitor was sticking out at the other end,

بە شێوەیەک کە لە کۆتاییەکەیدا شاشەکەی ڕووی لە دەرەوە بوو

a touchpad similarly embedded into the wall,

لەوحەی دەست لێدان لەناو کونەکەدا دانرابوو

put it on high-speed Internet, put the Internet Explorer there,

بە هێڵێکی ئینتەرنێت گەیاندمان، دۆزەرەوەی ئینتەرنێتمان تیا دانا و

put it on Altavista.com -- in those days -- and just left it there.

خستمانە سەر وێب سایتی ئەلتا ڤێستاوە، لەو ڕۆژانەدا.... وە لەوێ بە جێمان هێشت

And this is what we saw.

ئەوە بوو کە بینیمان

So that was my office in IIT. Here's the hole-in-the-wall.

کەواتە ئەوە نوسینگەکەم بوو لە (ئای تی) دا لێرەدا کونێک لە دیوارەکەدا هەیە

About eight hours later, we found this kid.

دوای نزیکەی ٨ سەعات، ئەم منداڵەمان دۆزییەوە

To the right is this eight-year-old child who --

لە لای ڕاستەوە ئەم منداڵە تەمەن ٨ ساڵە کە

and to his left is a six-year-old girl, who is not very tall.

لەلای چەپیەوە کچێکی تەمەن ٦ ساڵە کە زۆر درێژ نییە

And what he was doing was, he was teaching her to browse.

کوڕەکە کچەکەی فێردەکرد کە چۆن شت لە ئینتەرنێت دا بدۆزێتەوە

So it sort of raised more questions than it answered.

کەواتە زۆرتر پرسیار دەکرێت وەک لەوەی وەڵام بدرێتەوە

Is this real? Does the language matter,

ئەمانە ڕاستن؟ ئایا زمان گرنگە

because he's not supposed to know English?

لەبەرئەوەی پێویست ناکات کوڕەکە زمانی ئینگلیزی بزانێت؟

Will the computer last, or will they break it and steal it

ئایا کۆمپیتەر لەناودەچێت، یان دەیشکێنن یان دەیدزن؟

-- and did anyone teach them?

ئایا هیچ کەس ئەوانی فێرکردووە؟

The last question is what everybody said, but you know,

پرسیاری کۆتایی ئەوەیە کە هەموویان کردیان، بەڵام ئەزانن

I mean, they must have poked their head over the wall

پێویست بوو ئەوان سەر بەرز بکەنەوە بۆ سەر دیوارەکە

and asked the people in your office,

وە پرسیار لە خەڵک بکردایە لە نوسینگەکەتەوە

can you show me how to do it, and then somebody taught him.

بیان وتایە، دەتوانیت ڕێگام نیشان بدەیت بۆ چۆنییەتی کردنی ئەو کارە وە پاشان کەسێک ڕێگای نیشان دەدان

So I took the experiment out of Delhi and repeated it,

لەبەرئەوە تاقیکردنەوەکانم بردبووەوە دەرەوەی دەلهی و دووبارەم کردنەوە

this time in a city called Shivpuri in the center of India,

ئەمجارەیان لە شارێک کە ناوی (شیڤپور)بوو لە ناوەڕاستیی هندستان

where I was assured that nobody had ever taught anybody anything.

کە دڵنیا بووم لەوەی کە کەس شتی فێری کەس نەکردووە

(Laughter)

So it was a warm day, and the hole in the wall

ڕۆژێکی گەرم بوو، وە کونەکەی ناو دیوارەکە

was on that decrepit old building. This is the first kid who came there;

کە لە خانوویەکی کۆندا بوو، ئەوە یەکەم منداڵە کە هاتبووە ئەویا

he later on turned out to be a 13-year-old school dropout.

دوای ئەوەی دەرکەوتبوو کە خوێندکارێکی ١٣ ساڵان بوو

He came there and he started to fiddle around with the touchpad.

ئەهاتە ئەوێ و دەستی دەکرد بە دەست لێدانی ئەو شتە

Very quickly, he noticed that when he moves his finger on the touchpad

زۆر بە خێرایی، تێبینی ئەوەشی کردبوو کاتێک پەنجە دەخاتە سەر دوگمەکانی

something moves on the screen --

شتێک لەسەر شاشەکە دەجوڵێت

and later on he told me, "I have never seen a television

دواتر پێی وتم، من هەرگیز تەلەفیزیۆنم نەبینیوە

where you can do something."

کە بتوانیت شتێکی لەسەر بکەیت

So he figured that out. It took him over two minutes

دوو خولەکی پێ چوو تا بۆی دەرکەوت

to figure out that he was doing things to the television.

کە دەتوانێت شتێک بکات لەسەر تەلەفیزیۆنەکە

And then, as he was doing that, he made an accidental click

He did that, and the Internet Explorer changed page.

Eight minutes later, he looked from his hand to the screen,

دوای ٨ خولەک، لە دەستیەوە سەیری شاشەکەی کرد

and he was browsing: he was going back and forth.

ئەو دەگەڕا لە ئینتەرنێتدا: دەچووە پێشەوە و دەگەڕایەوە

When that happened, he started calling all the neighborhood children,

کاتێک ئەمە ڕووی دا، دەستی کرد بە بانگکردنی هەموو منداڵانی گەڕەک

like, children would come and see what's happening over here.

منداڵەکان هاتن و بینییان لەوێ چی بووە

And by the evening of that day, 70 children were all browsing.

بۆ ئێوارەی ئەو ڕۆژە، ٧٠ منداڵ هەموویان لە ئینتەرنێتدا دەگەڕان

So eight minutes and an embedded computer

کەواتە ٨ خولەک و کۆمپیتەرەکە دەورە درابوو

seemed to be all that we needed there.

وا دەرکەوت کە ئەوە هەموو شتێک بێت کە ئێمە پێویستمانە

So we thought that this is what was happening:

کەواتە وامان هەست کرد کە ئەمە لە ئارادایە:

that children in groups can self-instruct themselves

منداڵەکان بە کۆمەڵ دەتوانن فێربن و ئامۆژگاری یەکتر بکەن

to use a computer and the Internet. But under what circumstances?

بۆ بەکارهێنانی کۆمپیتەر و ئینتەرنێت، بەڵام لە ژێر چ بارێکدا؟

At this time there was a -- the main question was about English.

ئەم جارە پرسیارە سەرەکییەکە دەربارەی ئینگلیزی بوو

People said, you know, you really ought to have this in Indian languages.

خەڵک دەیووت ، ئەزانن، بەڕاستی پێویستە ئەمەتان هەبێت بە زمانی هندی

So I said, have what, shall I translate the Internet

منیش دەموت، چی، ئایا پێویستە ئینتەرنێت وەربگێڕمە سەر

into some Indian language? That's not possible.

زمانی هندی؟ ئەوە ناگونجێت

So, it has to be the other way about.

کەواتە دەبێت بە پێچەوانەوە بێت

But let's see, how do the children tackle the English language?

بەڵام با ببینین چۆن منداڵەکان خۆیان ڕادەهێنن لەگەڵ زمانی ئینگلیزیدا؟

I took the experiment out to northeastern India,

ئەم تاقیکردنەوەیەم بردە باکوری ڕۆژهەڵاتی هندستان

to a village called Madantusi,

بۆ دێیەک کە پێیان دەوت مادانتوسی

where, for some reason, there was no English teacher,

لەبەر ئەو هۆکارەی کە مامۆستای ئینگلیزییان نەبوو تاقیکردنەوەکەم بردە ئەوێ

so the children had not learned English at all.

کەواتە منداڵەکانی ئەوێ هەرگیز زمانی ئینگلیزی فێر نەبوبوون

And I built a similar hole-in-the-wall.

منیش هەمان پڕۆژەی کونم دروست کردەوە لە دیوارەکەدا

One big difference in the villages, as opposed to the urban slums:

یەکەم جیاوازی گەورە لە نێوان لادێکان و گەڕەکە هەژارەکان لە شاردا ئەوەیە کە

there were more girls than boys who came to the kiosk.

لەوێ ژمارەی کچەکان زۆرتر بوون لە ژمارەی کوڕەکان کە دەهاتن بۆ فێربون

In the urban slums, the girls tend to stay away.

لە گەڕەکە هەژارەکاندا کچەکان وا ڕاهاتبوون کە دوور کەونەوە

I left the computer there with lots of CDs -- I didn't have any Internet --

کۆمپیتەرەکەم بە جێهێشت لەگەڵ بەشێکی زۆر لە سیدی، هیچ خەتێکی ئینتەرنێت نەبوو

and came back three months later.

وە دوای سێ مانگ چوومەوە بۆ لایان

So when I came back there, I found these two kids,

کاتێک گەڕامەوە بۆ لایان ئەم دوو منداڵەم دۆزییەوە

eight- and 12-year-olds, who were playing a game on the computer.

کە تەمانیان ٨ ساڵ و ١٢ ساڵ بوو کە یارییان لەسەر کۆمپیتەر دەکرد

And as soon as they saw me they said,

هەر کە منیان بینی وتیان

"We need a faster processor and a better mouse."

پێویستمان بە بەرنامەی خێراتر و ماوسێکی باش هەیە

(Laughter)

پێکەنین

I was real surprised.

بە ڕاستی سەرم سوڕما

You know, how on earth did they know all this?

چۆن لەو شوێنەوە ئەم هەموو شتەیان زانی؟

And they said, "Well, we've picked it up from the CDs."

ئەوانیش وتیان، ئێمە لە سیدییەکانەوە دەرمان هێناو زانیمان

So I said, "But how did you understand what's going on over there?"

وتم بەڵام چۆن تێگەیشتن کە چی دەبێت بکەیت؟

So they said, "Well, you've left this machine

ئەوانیش وتیان باشە تۆ ئەم ئامێرەت لێرە بەجێهێشت

which talks only in English, so we had to learn English."

کە تەنها بە ئینگلیزی قسەی دەکرد، کەواتە پێویست بوو لەسەرمان کە فێری ئینگلیزی ببین

So then I measured, and they were using 200 English words with each other

پاشان ئەوام بژارد، کە ئەوان ٢٠٠ وشەی ئینگلیزییان بەکاردەهێنا لەگەڵ یەکتردا

-- mispronounced, but correct usage --

بە هەڵە دەیان ووت بەڵام بەکارهێنانەکانی ڕاست بوو

words like exit, stop, find, save, that kind of thing,

وشەکانی وەک (تەواوبوون، وەستان، دۆزینەوە، خەزن کردن،...) لەم جۆرە وشانە

not only to do with the computer but in their day-to-day conversations.

نەک تەنها لە کۆمپیتەر دا بەکاریان دەهێنا بەڵکو لە قسە کردنی ڕۆژانەشیاندا بەکاریان دەهێنا

So, Madantusi seemed to show that language is not a barrier;

کەواتە (مادانتوسی) وای نیشان دا کە زمان ڕێگر نەبووە لە فێربوون

in fact they may be able to teach themselves the language

لە ڕاستیدا لەوانەشە بتوانن کە ئەو زمانە فێری خۆیان بکە

if they really wanted to.

ئەگەر بە ڕاستی بیانەوێت ئەوە بکەن

Finally, I got some funding to try this experiment out

لە کۆتایدا، ویستم ئەم تاقیکردنەوەیە لە دەرەوە بکەم

to see if these results are replicable, if they happen everywhere else.

بۆ ئەوەی بزانم کە ئایا ئەنجامەکان وەکو یەکن، ئەگەر ئەم تاقیکردنەوەیە لە هەر شوێنێک بکەیت

India is a good place to do such an experiment in,

هندستان شوێنێکی باشە بۆ ئەنجام دانی تاقیکردنەوەیەکی بەم شێوەیە

because we have all the ethnic diversities, all the -- you know,

لەبەرئەوەی زۆرترین جیاوازی ڕەگەز و هەموو ..... خۆتان دەزانن

the genetic diversity, all the racial diversities,

بۆ ماوەییە هەمەچەشنەکان، هەموو ڕەگەزە هەمەچەشنەکان

and also all the socio-economic diversities.

وە هەروەها هەموو چەشنە ئابورییە کۆمەڵایەتییەکانیش

So, I could actually choose samples to cover a cross section

لەبەرئەوە توانیم تاقیکردنەوەی کۆمەڵێک لە هەڵبژێردراو بکەم

that would cover practically the whole world.

کە هەموو جیهان دەگرێتەوە

So I did this for almost five years, and this experiment

ئەم ئیشەم نزیکەی ٥ ساڵی خایاند، وە ئەم تاقیکردنەوەیە

really took us all the way across the length and breadth of India.

بە ڕاستی بە درێژایی و پانی هندستان ئێمەی برد

This is the Himalayas. Up in the north, very cold.

ئەمەش هیمالایایە، لە باکورەوە بەرزە و زۆر ساردە

I also had to check or invent an engineering design

هەروەها پێویست بوو کە شێوازێکی ئەندازیاری دابهێنم

which would survive outdoors, and I was using regular, normal PCs,

بۆ ئەوەی بتوانێت لەدەرەوە خزمەت بکات، وە کۆمپیتەری ئاسایم بەکارهێنا

so I needed different climates, for which India is also great,

لەبەرئەوە پێویستم بە ناوچەی کەشوهەوای جیاواز بوو، بۆ ئەمەش هندستان زۆر گونجاوە

because we have very cold, very hot, and so on.

لەبەرئەوەی زۆر گەرم و زۆر سارد و ئەم شتانەی هەیە

This is the desert to the west. Near the Pakistan border.

لە خۆرئاواوە بیابانە، نزیک سنوری پاکستان

And you see here a little clip of -- one of these villages --

لێرەدا ڤیدۆیەکی بچوکی یەکێک لەو لادێیانە دەبینین

the first thing that these children did was to find a website

یەکەم شت کە ئەو منداڵانە کردیان دۆزینەوەی ماڵپەرێک بوو

to teach themselves the English alphabet.

بۆ ئەوەی خۆیان فێری پیتەکانی ئینگلیزی بکەن

Then to central India -- very warm, moist, fishing villages,

پاشان لە ناوەڕاستی هندستان... زۆر گەرم، شێدار ،ماسی گرتن لە لادێکان

where humidity is a very big killer of electronics.

لەو شوێنانەی کە شێداری بکوژێکی گەورەی زانستی ئەلکترۆنییە

So we had to solve all the problems we had

کەواتە پێویست بوو کە هەموو ئەو کێشانە چارەسەر بکەین کە هەمانە

without air conditioning and with very poor power,

بەبێ هەواساردکەر و بە وزەیەکی زۆر کەم

so most of the solutions that came out used little blasts of air

کەواتە زۆربەی چارەسەرەکان کە کراوە بەکارهاتووە بۆ تەقینەوەیەکی بچوکی هەوا

put at the right places to keep the machines running.

دانانی لە شوێنێکی ڕاست و دروستدا بۆ پاراستنی ئامێرە ئیش کردووەکان

I want to just cut this short. We did this over and over again.

دەمەوێت ئەمە کورت بکەمەوە، چەند جارێک ئەمەمان دووبارە کردەوە

This sequence is also nice. This is a small child, a six-year-old,

ئەم زنجیرەیە زۆر باشە. ئەمە منداڵێکی تەمەن ٦ ساڵە

telling his eldest sister what to do.

بە خوشکە گەورەکەی دەڵێت کە چی بکات

And this happens very often with these computers,

ئەمەش زۆر ڕوو دەدات لەگەڵ ئەم کۆمپیتەرانەدا

that the younger children are found teaching the older ones.

کە دەبینین منداڵە بچوکەکان گەورەکان فێردەکەن

What did we find? We found that six- to 13-year-olds can self-instruct

چیمان دەست کەوت؟ ئەوە فێربووین کە منداڵانی تەمەن ٦ بۆ ١٣ ساڵ دەتوانن خۆیان فێربکەن

in a connected environment,

لە ژینگە جیاوازەکاندا

irrespective of anything that we could measure.

کە بە هەر شێوەیەک بتوانێت هەر شتێک پێوەر بکات

So if they have access to the computer, they will teach themselves, including intelligence.

کەواتە ئەگەر کۆمپیتەریان هەبێت دەتوانن خۆیان فێر بکەن، ئەگەر زیرەک بن

I couldn't find a single correlation with anything, but it had to be in groups.

پەیوەندییەک نییە لە نێوان هیچ کەس و شتێکدا، بەڵام دەبێت لەناو کۆمەڵدا بن

And that may be of great, you know, interest to this group,

لەوانەشە باشتر بن، خۆتان دەزانن ئارەزویان لەناو کۆمەڵە

because all of you are talking about groups.

لەبەرئەوەی هەمووتان باس لە کۆمەڵێک دەکەن

So here was the power of what a group of children can do,

کەواتە ئەوە هێزێکە کە کۆمەڵێک منداڵ دەتوانن چی بکەن

if you lift the adult intervention.

ئەگەر دەستێوەردانی گەورەکان بەرز بکەینەوە

Just a quick idea of the measurements.

بیرۆکەیەکی خێرا دەبێت دەربارەی پێوەرەکان

We took standard statistical techniques, so I'm going to not talk about that.

هەستان بە بەکارهێنانی شێوەیەکی بژاردنی بەهێز، من هیچ لە بارەیەوە باس ناکەم

But we got a clean learning curve,

بەڵام ئێمەش فێربوونێکی دیارمان دەست دەکەویت

almost exactly the same as what you would get in a school.

نزیک بوو لەوەی کە لە قوتابخانە دەستمان کەوتبوو

I'll leave it at that,

لە ئەمەدا وازی لێ دەهێنم

because, I mean, it sort of says it all, doesn't it?

لەبەرئەوەی کە مەبەستم ئەوەیە کە هەموو شتێک ڕوون دەکاتەوە، وانییە؟

What could they learn to do?

دەتوانن چی فێربن بۆ ئەوەی بیکەن ؟

Basic Windows functions, browsing, painting, chatting and email,

کاری سەرەکی ئەم ویندۆسە، دۆزینەوە، وێنەکردن، قسەکردن و ئیمەیڵ

games and educational material, music downloads, playing video.

مادەی یاری و فێرکاری، دابەزاندنی مۆسیقا، یاری ئەلکترۆنی

In short, what all of us do.

بەکورتی، هەموو ئەو شتانەی کە ئێمە ئەنجامی دەدەین

And over 300 children will become computer literate

وە زیاتر لە ٣٠٠ منداڵ دەبێتە لێزانی کۆمپیتەر

and be able to do all of these things in six months with one computer.

لە توانایاندا هەیە هەموو ئەو شتانە بکەن لەماوەی ٦ مانگدا بەیەک کۆمپیتەر

So, how do they do that?

کەواتە چۆن دەتوانن ئەمە بکەن؟

If you calculated the actual time of access,

ئەگەر جارەکانی گەیاندن بە ڕاستی بژمێریت

it would work out to minutes per day,

ئەوا لە ڕۆژێکدا دەقەکان دەژمێردرێت

so that's not how it's happening.

کەواتە بەو شێوەیە نییە کە ڕوو دەدات

What you have, actually, is there is one child operating the computer.

چیمان دەستکەوت، لە ڕاستیدا ئەوەمان زانی کە منداڵێک کۆمپیتەر بەکار دەهێنێت

And surrounding him are usually three other children,

هەروەها ٣ منداڵی تریش دەوری دەدەن و

who are advising him on what they should do.

ڕێنمایی دەکەن کە پێویستە چی بکات

If you test them, all four will get the same scores in whatever you ask them.

ئەگەر تاقی بکەیتەوە لە هەر چواریان یەک وەڵامت دەست دەکەوێت ئەگەر هەرچییەکیان لێ بپرسیت

Around these four are usually a group of about 16 children,

ئەو چوار منداڵە بە کۆمەڵێک دەورەدراون کە نزیکەی ١٦ منداڵ دەبن

who are also advising, usually wrongly,

ئەوانیش ئامۆژگاری دەکەن بەڵام بە هەڵە

about everything that's going on on the computer.

دەربارەی ئەوەی کە ڕوو دەدات لەسەر کۆمپیتەرەکە

And all of them also will clear a test given on that subject.

هەر هەمووشیان توانایان هەیە کە دەربچن لەو وانەیەدا

So they are learning as much by watching as they learn by doing.

لەبەرئەوە بە سەیرکردن هێندەی کردن فێردەبن

It seems counter-intuitive to adult learning,

وا دەردەکەوێت کە دژ بە فێربوونی گەورەکانن

but remember, eight-year-olds live in a society

بەڵام ئەوەتان بیر بێت کە تا ٨ ساڵانێک لە کۆمەڵگەیەکدا دەژی

where most of the time they are told, don't do this,

کە زۆر جار پێی دەوترێت، ئەوە مەکە

you know, don't touch the whiskey bottle.

دەست نەدەیت لە قوتوی ویسکییەکەوە

So what does the eight-year-old do?

کە وا بوو منداڵە ٨ ساڵانەکە چی دەکات؟

He observes very carefully how a whiskey bottle should be touched.

چاودێری دەکات کە چۆن پێویستە دەست لە قوتوی ویسکییەکەوە بدات

And if you tested him,

ئەگەر تاقی بکەنەوە

he would answer every question correctly on that topic.

وەڵامی هەموو پرسیارێک بەڕاستی دەداتەوە لەسەر ئەو بابەتە

So, they seem to be able to acquire very quickly.

وا دیارە لە توانایادا هەیە زۆر بە خێرایی شت فێربن

So what was the conclusion over the six years of work?

کەواتە کۆتاییەکەی چی بوو دەربارەی ٦ ساڵ لە کارکردن؟

It was that primary education can happen on its own,

ئەوە بوو بۆمان دەرکەوت کە فێرکردنی سەرەتایی لە خۆیەوە ڕوو دەدات

or parts of it can happen on its own.

یان بەشێکی لە خۆیەوە ڕوو دەدات

It does not have to be imposed from the top downwards.

ناشبێت لەسەرەوە بۆ خوارەوە بکرێت

It could perhaps be a self-organizing system, so that was

لەوانەیە ڕێکخراوێکی خۆیی بێت، کە وا بوو

the second bit that I wanted to tell you,

دووەم بەش کە دەمویست پێتان بڵێم

that children can self-organize and attain an educational objective.

منداڵانیش دەتوانن خۆیان فێربکەن و ئاواتەکانیان بهێننەدی

The third piece was on values, and again, to put it very briefly,

سێیەم بەش دەربارەی نرخەکانە ئەمەشیان بە کورتی باس دەکەین

I conducted a test over 500 children spread across all over India,

هەستام بە تاقیکردنەوەی ٥٠٠ منداڵ لە سەرتاسەری هندستان

and asked them -- I gave them about 68 different

نزیکەی ٦٨ پرسیاری جیاوازم لێ کردن

values-oriented questions and simply asked them their opinions.

دەربارەی نرخ، بە بیروڕای خۆیان بە ئاسانی وەڵامیان دایەوە

We got all sorts of opinions. Yes, no or I don't know.

لەهەموو جۆرەکانی بیروڕامان دەستکەوت. بەڵێ، نەخێر یان نازانم

I simply took those questions where I got 50 percent yeses and 50 percent noes --

وەڵامی پرسیارەکان کە وەرم گرت %٥٠ی بەڵێ بوو %٥٠ی نەخێر

so I was able to get a collection of 16 such statements.

توانیم ١٦ لەم دەرخستنانە کۆبکەمەوە

These were areas where the children were clearly confused,

ناوچە هەبوو کە منداڵان تیایدا شڵەژاوبوون

because half said yes and half said no.

لەبەر ئەوەی نیوەی بەڵێ و نیوەی نەخێر بوو

A typical example being, "Sometimes it is necessary to tell lies."

لەم جۆرە نمونانە" هەندێ کات پێویستە درۆ بکەین"

They don't have a way to determine which way to answer this question;

هیچ ڕێگەیەک نییە بۆ ئەوەی بتوانین وەڵامی ئەم پرسیارانە بدەینەوە

perhaps none of us do.

لەوانەیە کەس لە ئێمە نەتوانێت ئەوە بکات

So I leave you with this third question.

لەبەرئەوە پرسیاری سێیەم دەکەم

Can technology alter the acquisition of values?

ئایا تەکنەلۆژیا دەتوانێت نرخ دەستەبەر بکات؟

Finally, self-organizing systems,

لە کۆتایدا سیستەمەکانی ڕێکخستن خۆیان

about which, again, I won't say too much

دەربارەی ئەوە، دووبارە نامەوێت زۆر بڵێم

because you've been hearing all about it.

لەبەرئەوەی هەمووشتێکتان دەربارەی ئەوە بیستووە

Natural systems are all self-organizing:

شێوازە سروشتییەکان هەموویان خۆڕێکخەرن

galaxies, molecules, cells, organisms, societies --

گالاکسی، گەردیلەکان، خانەکان، شتە زیندووەکان، کۆمەڵگەکان

except for the debate about an intelligent designer.

بێجگە لە گفتوگۆکردن دەربارەی دیزاینەرە زیرەکەکان

But at this point in time, as far as science goes,

بەڵام لەم کاتەدا زانستیش

it's self-organization.

ڕێکخراوێکی خۆییە

But other examples are traffic jams, stock market, society

بەڵام نمونەکانی تر، قەرەباڵغی ترافیکەکانن و کۆمەڵگا

and disaster recovery, terrorism and insurgency.

وە گێڕانەوەی کارەکانمان و تیرۆرست و یاخیبووەکان

And you know about the Internet-based self-organizing systems.

وە هەروەها دەربارەی سیستەمەکانی ئینتەرنێت و خۆڕێکخستن دەزانن

So here are my four sentences then.

کەواتە ئەمە چوار ڕستەکەی منە

Remoteness affects the quality of education.

دووری کار دەکاتە سەر چۆنییەتی فێربوون

Educational technology should be introduced into remote areas first,

تەکنەلۆژیای فێرکردن دەبێت یەکەم جار بدرێت بە ناوچە دابڕاوەکان

and other areas later.

وە دواتر بۆ ناوچەکانی تر

Values are acquired; doctrine and dogma are imposed --

نرخ دروست دەبێت، بیروباوەڕە ئاینییەکان دەسەپێنرێن

the two opposing mechanisms.

پێچەوانەی دەزگا میکانییەکان

And learning is most likely a self-organizing system.

بەزۆری فێربوون لە ڕێکخستنی خۆیی دەچێت

If you put all the four together, then it gives -- according to me --

ئەگەر هەرچواریان بەیەکەوە دابنێیت ئەوەمان دەست دەکەوێت، بە بیروڕای من

it gives us a goal, a vision, for educational technology.

ئامانجمان دەداتێ، هیوامان دەداتێ بۆ تەکنەلۆژیای فێربون

An educational technology and pedagogy that is digital, automatic,

تەکنەلۆژیای فێربوون و فێربونی خۆیەتی

fault-tolerant, minimally invasive, connected and self-organized.

داگیرکاری، پێکەوە لکان، وە ڕێکخستنی خۆیی

As educationists, we have never asked for technology; we keep borrowing it.

وەک فێرکەر، هەرگیز داوای تەکنەلۆژیامان نەکردووە، هەمیشە قەرزی دەکەین

PowerPoint is supposed to be considered a great educational technology,

پێویست بوو پاوەرپۆینت بە تەکنەلۆژیایەکی فێربونی نایاب دابنێین

but it was not meant for education, it was meant for making boardroom presentations.

بەڵام بۆ فێرکردن نەبوو، بۆ پێشکەشکردنی سیمینار بوو

We borrowed it. Video conferencing. The personal computer itself.

ئێمە قەرزمان کرد.ئێمە ڤیدیۆی کۆنفرانس و کۆمپیتەری تایبەتمان دەستەبەر کرد

I think it's time that the educationists made their own specs,

وابزانم کاتی ئەوەیە کە پسپۆڕی پەروەردە چاویلکەی خۆیان دروست بکەن

and I have such a set of specs. This is a brief look at that.

وە من شتێکی لەو جۆرەم هەیە، کە ئەمە ڕوون کردنەوەکەیەتی

And such a set of specs should produce the technology

دەستە چاویلکەیەکی ئاوا پێویستە تەکنەلۆژیا بەرهەم بهێنێت

to address remoteness, values and violence.

بۆ مامەڵەکردن لەگەڵ دوری و بایەخ و زەبر و زەنگ

So I thought I'd give it a name -- why don't we call it "outdoctrination."

کەواتە ناوێکم لێ ناوە، بۆچی پێی نەڵێین (ئاوتدۆکترینەیشن) وە

And could this be a goal for educational technology in the future?

ئایا دەبێتە ئامانجێکی تەکنەلۆژیای پەروەردەیی لە داهاتوودا؟

So I want to leave that as a thought with you.
