Welcome to the world of cyberharassment.

بەخێربێت بۆ جیهانی هەراسانکردنی ئینتەرنیت.

The kind of harassment that women face in Pakistan is very serious

ئەو هەراسانکردنانەی ژنانی پاکستان ڕووبەروی دەبنەوە زۆر جدیین

and leads to sometimes deadly outcomes.

هەندێک جار پێشرەوی دەکات بەرەو مەرگێکی کوشندە.

This kind of harassment keeps women from accessing the internet --

ئەم جۆرە هەراسانکردنانە ژنان دووردەخاتەوە لە بەکارهێنانی ئینتەرنێت--

essentially, knowledge.

بەتایبەتی، زانیاری.

It's a form of oppression.

ئەوە شێوەیەکی ستەمە.

Pakistan is the sixth most populous country in the world,

پاکستان شەشەم گەورەترین وڵاتیە لەجیهاندا،

with 140 million people having access to mobile technologies,

١٤٠ملیۆن کەس دەتوانن مۆبایل بەکاربهێنن.

and 15 percent internet penetration.

و لەسەدا پازدەیان ئینتەرنێت.

And this number doesn't seem to go down with the rise of new technologies.

ئەم ژمارەیە وادەرناکەوێت کەمتربێتەوە لەگەڵ گەشەکرنی تەکنۆلۆجی نوێ.

Pakistan is also the birthplace of the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner,

پاکستان شوێنی لەدایک بوونی گەنجترین براوەی خەڵاتی نۆبڵە،

Malala Yousafzai.

مەلالە یوسفزەی.

But that's just one aspect of Pakistan.

بەڵام ئەوە تەنها یەک ڕووی پاکستانە.

Another aspect is where the twisted concept of honor

ڕووەکەی تری شوێنی چەمکێکی بادراوی شەرەفە.

is linked to women and their bodies;

بەستراوە بە ژنان و لاشەیانەوە،

where men are allowed to disrespect women

شوێنێکە پیاو ڕێگەدراوە بۆ بێرێزیکردن بە ژن

and even kill them sometimes

تەنانەت هەندێک کات دەشیان کوژن

in the name of so-called "family honor";

لە ژێر ناوێک پێدەڵێن، "شەرەفی خێزان":

where women are left to die right outside their houses

لە دەرەوەی ماڵەکانیان ژنان دەکوژن

for speaking to a man on a mobile phone,

بەهۆی قسەکردن لەگەڵ پیاوێک بە موبایل،

in the name of "family honor."

لەژێر ناوی "شەرەفی خێزان".

Let me say this very clearly:

با زۆر بە ڕوونی ئەمە بڵێم:

it's not honor;

ئەو شەرەف نییە:

it's a cold-blooded murder.

ئەوە لەناوبردنە.

I come from a very small village in Punjab, Pakistan,

لە گوندێکی بچووکی لە پونجابی، پاکستانەوە هاتووم،

where women are not allowed to pursue their higher education.

لەوێ ژنانان ناتوانن لە قۆناغی بەرز بخوێنن.

The elders of my extended family didn't allow their women

پیرەکانی بنەماڵەی من ڕێگەیان نەدەدا ژنەکانیان

to pursue their higher education or their professional careers.

زۆر بخوێنن یاخود کاری باش بەدەست بهێنن.

However, unlike the other male guardians of my family,

،جیاواز لەئەندامە نێرەکانی خێزانەکەم،

my father was one who really supported my ambitions.

باوکم تاکە کەس بوو پاڵپشتی ویستەکانی دەکردم.

To get my law degree,

بۆ ئەوەی یاسا بخوێنم،

of course, it was really difficult,

بەدڵنییایەوە، ئەوە زۆر قورس و

and [there were] frowns of disapproval.

نارەحەتبوو.

But in the end, I knew it's either me or them,

بەڵام لەکۆتاییدا، زانیم یان من یان ئەوان،

and I chose myself.

و خۆمم هەڵبژارد.

My family's traditions and expectations for a woman

نەریتی خێزانەکەم و چاوەڕوانی بۆ ژن

wouldn't allow me to own a mobile phone until I was married.

ڕێگەیان نەدام خاوەن موبایلی خۆمبم تا هاوسەرگیریمکرد.

And even when I was married,

تەنانەت کاتێک هاوسەرگیریشم کردبوو،

this tool became a tool for my own surveillance.

مۆبایل بوو بە ئامێرێک بۆ چاودێریکردنم.

When I resisted this idea of being surveilled by my ex-husband,

کاتێک هەوڵمدا ئەو بیرۆکەیە بشکێنم و چاودێری نەکڕیم لە لایەن هاوسەرکەمەوە،

he really didn't approve of this

بەدڵنییایەوە بەوە قایل نەبوو

and threw me out of his house,

لەماڵەکەی هەڵیدامە دەرەوە.

along with my six-month-old son, Abdullah.

بەتەنها لەگەڵ کوڕە شەش مانگەکەم عبدللە.

And that was the time when I first asked myself, "Why?

ئەو کاتە بوو پرسیارم لە خۆمکرد ،"بۆ؟"

Why are women not allowed to enjoy the same equal rights

بۆچی ڕێگەنادرێت ژنان چێژ لە هەمان ماف ببینن

enshrined in our Constitution?

کە لە دەستورەکەماندا هاتووە؟

While the law states that a woman has the same equal access

لەکاتێکد لە یاسای دەوڵەتدا ژنان هەمان مافیان هەیە

to the information,

بۆ زانیاری،

why is it always men -- brothers, fathers and husbands --

بۆچی هەمیشە پیاوەکان--براکان باوکەکان و مێردەکان--

who are granting these rights to us,

ئەر مافانە دەدەن بە ئێمە،

effectively making the law irrelevant?"

بەکاریگەری دروستکردنی یاسایەکی نادروست؟

So I decided to take a step,

بریارمدا هەنگاوێک بنێم،

instead of keep questioning these patriarchal structures

لەجیاتی پرسیارکردنی بەردەوام لەو دەسەڵاتە پیاوسالارییە

and societal norms.

و نۆرمە کۆمەڵایەتییەکان.

And I founded the Digital Rights Foundation in 2012

لەساڵی٢٠١٢ ڕێکخراوی مافە دیجیتاڵییەکانم دامەزراند

to address all the issues and women's experiences in online spaces

بۆ پیشاندانی هەموو نارحەتی و ئەزموونی ژنان لە ئینتەرنیتدا

and cyberharassment.

و هەراسانکردنی ئەینتەرنیت.

From lobbying for free and safe internet

لە گەڕان بۆ ئازادی و سەلامەتی ئینتەرنێت

to convincing young women

بۆ قایلکردنی ژنانی گەنج

that access to the safe internet is their fundamental, basic, human right,

کەوا بەکارهێنانی ئینتەرنیتی سەلامەت مافێکی سەرەتاییەتی

I'm trying to play my part in igniting the spark

هەوڵدەدەم بۆ ئەوەی لە بوارەکەی خۆم ڕۆڵبگێرم

to address the questions that have bothered me all these years.

بۆ پیشاندانی ئەو پرسیارانەی ماوەی چەندین ساڵە بێزارم دەکەن.

With a hope in my heart,

بەو هیواییە لە دڵمدابوو و

and to offer a solution to this menace,

و پێشکەشکردنی چارەسەر بۆ ئەو هەڕەشەیە،

I started Pakistan's and the region's first cyberharassment help line

یەکەمین هێڵی هاوکاری هەراسانکردنم لە پاکستان دروست کرد

in December 2016 --

لە کانوونی یەکەمی ٢٠١٦---

to extend my support to the women who do not know who to turn to

بۆ پیشاندانی پاڵپشتی خۆم بۆ ئەو ژنانەی کە نازانن چی بکەن

when they face serious threats online.

کاتێک بەجدی مەترسی ئینتەرنیت ڕووبەرویان دەبیتەوە.

I think of the women who do not have the necessary support

پێموا یە ژنان پاڵپشتی پێویستیان نییە بۆ مامەڵەکردن

to deal with the mental trauma when they feel unsafe in online spaces,

لەگەڵ نەخۆشی دەروونی کاتێک هەست بەناسەلامەتی دەکەن لە ئینتەرنێت،

and they go about their daily activities,

و سەرقاڵی ژیانی ڕۆژانەیانن،

thinking that there is a rape threat in their in-box.

بیربکەنەوە لەوەی مەترسی دەستدرێژیکردنیان لەسەرە.

Safe access to the internet is an access to knowledge,

دەستگەیشتن بە ئینتەرنێت دەستگەیشتنە بە زانیاری،

and knowledge is freedom.

زانیاریش ئازادییە.

When I fight for women's digital rights,

کاتێک بۆ مافی ژماری ژنان دەجەنگم

I'm fighting for equality.

بۆ یەکسانی دەجەنگم.
