The kind of harassment that women face in Pakistan is very serious

파키스탄 여성들이 마주하는 이런 폭력은 매우 심각한 수준이며

and leads to sometimes deadly outcomes.

종종 치명적인 결과를 가져오기도 합니다.

This kind of harassment keeps women from accessing the internet --

이런 폭력은 여성들이 인터넷에 접근하는 것을 막습니다.

essentially, knowledge.

근본적으로는 지식에 말이죠.

It's a form of oppression.

이것은 억압의 한 형태입니다.

Pakistan is the sixth most populous country in the world,

파키스탄은 세계에서 여섯 번째로 인구가 많은 나라이며

with 140 million people having access to mobile technologies,

1억4천만 명의 사람들이 휴대폰을 이용하고 있으며

and 15 percent internet penetration.

인터넷 보급률은 15%에 달합니다.

And this number doesn't seem to go down with the rise of new technologies.

새로운 기술이 발전함에 따라 이 숫자는 결코 줄지 않을 것입니다.

Pakistan is also the birthplace of the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner,

또한 파키스탄은 최연소 노벨 평화상 수상자인

말랄라 유사프자이의 출생지이기도 합니다.

Malala Yousafzai.

But that's just one aspect of Pakistan.

그러나 이것들은 파키스탄의 오직 한 면일 뿐이죠.

Another aspect is where the twisted concept of honor

다른 관점에서 보면 잘못된 명예의 개념이

is linked to women and their bodies;

여성들의 신체에 굴레를 씌우고 있는 곳이기도 합니다.

where men are allowed to disrespect women

남성들은 여성들을 존중할 필요가 없으며

and even kill them sometimes

심지어 "가족 명예"라는 구실로

in the name of so-called "family honor";

여성들을 죽이기도 하는 곳이며

where women are left to die right outside their houses

다른 남성과 휴대폰 통화를 하였다는 이유만으로

"가족 명예"를 내세우며

for speaking to a man on a mobile phone,

여성들을 내쫓아 집 밖에서 죽게 내버려 두는 곳입니다.

in the name of "family honor."

Let me say this very clearly:

저는 확실히 말하고 싶습니다.

it's not honor;

이것은 명예가 아닙니다.

it's a cold-blooded murder.

이것은 냉혹한 살인입니다.

I come from a very small village in Punjab, Pakistan,

제 고향은 파키스탄의 매우 작은 마을인 펀자브이며

where women are not allowed to pursue their higher education.

이곳에서는 여성들이 고등 교육을 추구하는 것을 허락지 않았습니다.

The elders of my extended family didn't allow their women

제 대가족의 어른들도 집안의 여성들이

to pursue their higher education or their professional careers.

고등 교육을 받거나 직업 경력을 가지지 못하게 했습니다.

However, unlike the other male guardians of my family,

그러나 제 가족 중 다른 남성들과는 다르게

my father was one who really supported my ambitions.

제 아버지는 저의 목표를 진심으로 지지해주시는 분이셨습니다.

To get my law degree,

저는 법학 학위를 받기 위해

of course, it was really difficult,

당연하게도 정말 힘든 시간을 보내야만 했으며

and [there were] frowns of disapproval.

반감을 표시하며 눈살을 찌푸리는 많은 사람들을 견뎌내야 했습니다.

But in the end, I knew it's either me or them,

저는 그들과 저의 기준 중 하나를 선택해야 했지만

and I chose myself.

결국 저는 저 자신을 선택했습니다.

My family's traditions and expectations for a woman

여성에 대한 제 가족의 전통과 요구는

wouldn't allow me to own a mobile phone until I was married.

휴대폰의 사용조차도 결혼 전까지 허락하지 않았습니다.

And even when I was married,

제가 결혼한 이후에도

this tool became a tool for my own surveillance.

휴대폰은 저를 감시하기 위한 도구로 사용되었을 뿐입니다.

When I resisted this idea of being surveilled by my ex-husband,

저는 저를 감시하는 행동에 대해 전남편에게 항의했지만

he really didn't approve of this

그는 제 의견에 동의하지 않았고

and threw me out of his house,

여섯 살 된 아들인 압둘라와 함께

along with my six-month-old son, Abdullah.

저를 집 밖으로 내쫓아버렸습니다.

And that was the time when I first asked myself, "Why?

그리고 이것이 제가 처음으로 저에게 스스로 "왜 이런 거지?"

Why are women not allowed to enjoy the same equal rights

"왜 여성들은 헌법에 명시되어 있는

동등한 권리를 누리도록 허락받지 못할까?"

enshrined in our Constitution?

While the law states that a woman has the same equal access

"여성도 정보를 이용할 동등한 권리가 있다고

헌법이 명시하는데도 불구하고

to the information,

why is it always men -- brothers, fathers and husbands --

왜 항상 형제, 아버지, 남편들과 같은 남성들만이

who are granting these rights to us,

이러한 권리를 허락하는 주체가 되며

effectively making the law irrelevant?"

법을 무의미하게 만드는 걸까?" 라고 자신에게 질문하였습니다.

So I decided to take a step,

그 이후 저는

instead of keep questioning these patriarchal structures

이런 가부장적인 사회적 기준에 계속 질문을 던지는 대신

and societal norms.

And I founded the Digital Rights Foundation in 2012

그리고 저는 여성들이 온라인상에서 겪었던 문제들과

to address all the issues and women's experiences in online spaces

그들이 당해왔던 사이버 폭력을 다루기 위하여

2012년에 디지털 인권 재단 (Digital Rights Foundation)을 설립했습니다.

and cyberharassment.

From lobbying for free and safe internet

저는 젊은 여성들에게 안전하게 인터넷을 이용하는 것은

to convincing young women

우리들의 기본적이고 중요한 인권이라는 것을 알리기 위해

that access to the safe internet is their fundamental, basic, human right,

여성들의 안전한 무료 인터넷 보급을 위한 로비 활동을 펼치며

I'm trying to play my part in igniting the spark

지금껏 저를 괴롭혀왔던 질문에 답을 할 수 있는

to address the questions that have bothered me all these years.

시발점이 될 수 있도록 제 역할에 최선을 다하고 있습니다.

With a hope in my heart,

가슴에 희망을 품고

and to offer a solution to this menace,

이러한 위협에 대한 해결책을 마련하기 위해

I started Pakistan's and the region's first cyberharassment help line

to extend my support to the women who do not know who to turn to

온라인에서 심각한 위협을 받았을 때 누구에게 의지할지 모르는 여성들에게

when they face serious threats online.

더 많은 도움을 주도록 하였습니다.

I think of the women who do not have the necessary support

저는 온라인에서 성폭력 협박 메일을 받고 항상 불안에 떨며

to deal with the mental trauma when they feel unsafe in online spaces,

그 트라우마와 하루를 시작해야 하는

and they go about their daily activities,

사회 지원이 꼭 필요한 여성들을 항상 고려하고 있습니다.

thinking that there is a rape threat in their in-box.

Safe access to the internet is an access to knowledge,

안전하게 인터넷에 접근하는 것은 곧 지식에 접근하는 것이며

and knowledge is freedom.

지식은 곧 자유를 의미합니다.

When I fight for women's digital rights,

여성의 디지털 권리에 대해 투쟁하는 것은

I'm fighting for equality.

평등을 위한 투쟁인 것입니다.
