When I was four years old,

کاتێک چوار ساڵ بووم،

my dad taught me the Taos Pueblo Hoop Dance,

باوکم سەمای تۆوس پوبڵۆ ھۆپی فێرکردم،

a traditional dance born hundreds of years ago in Southwestern USA.

سەمایەکی کۆنە دەگەڕێتەوە بۆ سەدان ساڵ پێش ئێستا لە باشووری خۆرئاوای ئەمریکا.

A series of hoops are created out of willow wood,

زنجیرەیەک تەوقە داری چنار دروست دەکەن،

and they're threaded together to create formations of the natural world,

لەیەک ئاڵاون بۆ دروستکردنی جیھانێکی سروشتی

showing the many beauties of life.

بۆ نیشاندانی زۆرێک لە جوانییەکانی ژیان.

In this dance, you're circling in a constant spin,

لەو سەمایەدا،تۆ لە جووڵەیەکی نەگۆڕدا دەخولێیتەوە،

mimicking the movement of the Sun

لاسایی جووڵەی خۆر و

and the passage of time.

تێپەڕبوونی کات دەکەیتەوە.

Watching this dance was magic to me.

سەیرکردنی ئەم سەمایە بۆ من جادوویی بوو.

Like with a time capsule,

بەھۆی حەشارگەی نھێنی,

I was taking a look through a cultural window to the past.

سەرنجێکی ڕابردووم دا بەناو ڕێڕەوی کلتوری.

I felt a deeper connection

ھەستم بە پەیوەندییەکی بەھێزتر دەکرد

to how my ancestors used to look at the world around them.

چۆن باپیرانمان ڕاھاتوون سەیری جیھانی دەوروبەریان بکەن.

Since then, I've always been obsessed with time capsules.

لەدوای ئەوە، ھەمیشە دوودڵ بووم بە حەشارگەی نھێنی.

They take on many forms,

ئەوانە زۆر شێوە دەگرنەوە،

but the common thread is that they're uncontrollably fascinating

بەڵام باوترینیان ئەوەیە کە بێ دەست بەسەردا گرتن دڵڕفێنن

to us as human beings,

بۆ ئێمە وەکو مرۆڤ،

because they're portals to a memory,

لەبەرئەوەی ئەوان دەروازەن بۆ بیرەوەرییەک،

and they hold the important power of keeping stories alive.

وە ھێزە گرنگەکەیان ھەڵگرتووە بۆ ھێشتنەوەی چیرۆکەکان بە زیندوویی.

As a filmmaker and composer,

وەک دەرھێنەرێکی فیلم و ئاواز دانەرێک،

it's been my journey to find my voice,

ئەمە بوو بە گەشتی من بۆ دۆزینەوەی دەنگم،

reclaim the stories of my heritage and the past

گێڕانەوەی چیرۆکەکانی میرات و ڕابردووم

and infuse them into music and film time capsules to share.

و چاندنیان لەناو حەشارگەی نھێنی فیلم و مۆسیقا بۆ بڵاوکردنەوە..

To tell you a bit about how I found my voice,

تا پێتان بڵێم کە چۆن دەنگی خۆمم دۆزییەوە،

I'd like to share a bit about how I grew up.

من حەزدەکەم ئەوەتان پێبڵێم کە چۆن گەورەبووم.

In Southern California, I grew up in a multigenerational home,

لە باشووری کالیفۆڕنیا، لە ماڵێکی فرە نەتەوەدا گەورەبووم

meaning I lived under the same roof

واتا لەژێر ھەمان سەقفدا ژیام لەگەڵیان

as my parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents.

وەک دایکوباوکم، پورەکانم، خاڵەکانم ھەروەھا داپیروباپیرم.

My mother is Dutch-Indonesian and Chinese with immigrant parents,

دایکم ھۆڵەندی-ئەندۆنیسایی و چینییە لەگەڵ دایک وباوکە کۆچەرەکەی،

and my father is Ojibwe

و باوکم خێڵەکییە

and an enrolled tribal member

و بە ئەندامی ھۆز ھەژمار دەکرێت

of the Prairie Band's Potawatomi Tribe in Northeastern Kansas.

لە ھۆزی پۆتاواتۆمی کۆمەڵەی چیمەن نزاری باکوری خۆرھەڵاتی کانساس.

So one weekend I'd be learning how to fold dumplings,

کۆتایی ھەفتەیەک فێری چۆنیەتی پێچانەوەی شیرینی دەبم،

and the next, I'd be traditional-style dancing

و دواتر، سەمای نەریتی دەکەم

at a powwow,

لە ئاھەنگێکدا،

immersed in the powerful sounds of drums and singers.

تێکەڵبوون لەناو دەنگە بەھێزەکانی تەپڵ و گۆرانیبێژەکان.

Being surrounded by many cultures was the norm,

دەوردران بە چەندان کلتوور ئاسایی بوو،

but also a very confusing experience.

بەڵام ئەزموونێکی زۆر سەر لێ شێوێنەر بوو.

It was really hard for me to find my voice,

زۆر سەخت بوو گوێم لە دەنگی خۆم بێت,

because I never felt I was enough --

لەبەرئەوەی ھەرگیز ھەستم نەکردبوو بەس بم--

never Chinese, Dutch-Indonesian or Native enough.

یان چینیەکان، ھۆڵەندی-ئیندۆنیسایی یان ڕەسەنەکان بەس بن

Because I never felt I was a part of any community,

لەبەرئەوەی ھەرگیز ھەستم نەکردووە بەشێک بم لە کۆمەڵگایەک،

I sought to learn the stories of my heritage

من خوازیاربووم بۆ فێربوونی چیرۆکەکانی میراتم

and connect them together to rediscover my own.

و بەیەکەوە بیان بەستمەوە بۆ دۆزینەوەی خودی خۆم.

The first medium I felt gave me a voice was music.

یەکەم ناوەند کە ھەستم کرد دەنگی بە من بەخشی مۆسیقا بوو.

With layers of sounds and multiple instruments,

لەگەڵ چەند چینێکی دەنگ و ئامێری ھەمەجۆر،

I could create soundscapes and worlds that were much bigger than my own.

دەمتوانی دەنگبێژ و جیھانێک دروست بکەم گەورەتر لە ھی خۆمان.

Through music, I'm inviting you into a sonic portal

لەڕێگەی مۆسیقاوە، بانگھێشتتان دەکەم بۆ دەروازەی دەنگی

of my memories and emotions,

بیرەوەری و ھەستەکانم،

and I'm holding up a mirror to yours.

و من ئاوێنەیەکم بۆتان بەرز کردۆتەوە.

One of my favorite instruments to play is the guzheng zither,

یەکێک لەو ئامێرانەی کە حەزدەکەم بیژەنم ‏یە(guzheng zither)

a Chinese harp-like instrument.

ئامێرێکی قیسارەی چینی.

While the hoop dance is hundreds of years old,

کاتێک تەمەنی سەمای تەوق سەدان ساڵە،

the guzheng has more than 2,000 years of history.

‏(guzheng) تەمەنی زیاتر لە ٢٠٠٠ ساڵە لە مێژوودا.

I'm playing the styles that greatly influence me today,

ئەمڕۆ ئەو شێوازانە دەژەنم کە زۆر کاریگەریان دەبێت لەسەرم،

like electronic music,

وەک مۆسیقای ئەلیکترۆنی،

with an instrument that was used to play traditional folk music long ago.

بە ئامێرێک کە پێشتر بۆ ژەنینی مۆسیقای میللی نەتەوەیی بەکار دەھات.

And I noticed an interesting connection:

وە تێبینی پەیوەندییەکی سەرنج ڕاکێشم کرد:

the zither is tuned to the pentatonic scale,

قانوون ئاوازێک دەردەکات بۆ پێوەرەکانی مۆسیقا،

a scale that is universally known in so many parts of music

پێوەرەکە جیھانیانە ناسراوە لە زۆر لە بەشەکانی مۆسیقا

around the world,

لە سەرتاسەری جیھان،

including Native American folk songs.

لەناویاندا گۆرانییە فۆلکلۆرییە ڕەسەنە ئەمریکییەکان.

In both Chinese and Native folk,

لە ھەردووک چینییەکان و فۆلکلۆری ڕەسەن،

I sense this inherent sound of longing and holding onto the past,

ھەست دەکەم ئەو دەنگە بۆماوەییە پەرۆشت دەکا و دەتگەڕێنێتەوە بۆ ڕابردوو،

an emotion that greatly drives the music I create today.

ھەستێکە ئەو مۆسیقایەی دروستکرد کە ئەمڕۆ خوڵقاندم.

At the time, I wondered if I could make this feeling of immersion

لەوکاتەدا، پرسیم کە ئەگەر بتوانم ئەم ھەستی تێکەڵبوونە دروست بکەم

even more powerful,

تەنانەت بەھێزتریش،

by layering visuals and music --

بەھۆی توێژاڵ کردنی بینراو و مۆسیقا --

visuals and images on top of the music.

بینراو و وێنەکانی لوتکەی مۆسیقا.

So I turned to internet tutorials to learn editing software,

گەڕامەوە بۆ فێرکارییەکانی ئینتەرنێت بۆ فێربوونی چاککردنی سۆفتوێر،

went to community college to save money

چووم بۆ کۆمەڵەی کۆلێژ بۆ پاشەکەوت کردنی پارە

and created films.

و فیلممان دروستکرد.

After a few years experimenting,

دوای چەند ساڵێکی کەم لە تاقیکردنەوە،

I was 17 and had something I wanted to tell and preserve.

من١٧ساڵبووم و ھەندێک شتم ھەبوو دەمویست بیڵێم و بیپارێزم.

It started with a question:

بە پرسیارێک دەستم پێکرد:

What happens when a story is forgotten?

چی ڕوودەدات کاتێک چیرۆکێک لەبیردەکرێت؟

I lead with this in my latest documentary film,

من بەمە دوایین فیلمی بەڵگەنامەییم ڕابەری دەکەم،

"Smoke That Travels,"

"دووکەڵ کە گەشت دەکات,"

which immerses people into the world of music, song, color and dance,

کە خەڵک نقووم دەکات لە جیھانی مۆسیقا، گۆرانی،ڕەنگ و سەما

as I explore my fear that a part of my identity, my Native heritage,

کاتی گەڕان ترسم بەشێکە لە ناسنامەم، میراتی نەتەوەییم،

will be forgotten in time.

لە کاتی خۆیدا لەبیر دەکرێت.

Many indigenous languages are dying due to historically forced assimilation.

زمانی زۆر ھاوڵاتی دەمرن بەھۆی بەزۆر تواندنەوەی مێژوویی.

From the late 1800s to the early 1970s,

لە کۆتاییەکانی ١٨٠٠ و سەرەتاکانی ١٩٧٠،

Natives were forced into boarding schools,

ڕەسەنەکان بەزۆر خرانە خوێندنگا ناوخۆییەکان،

where they were violently punished if they practiced traditional ways

کە تیایدا بە توندی سزا دەدران ئەگەر ڕێگا نەریتییەکانیان کار پێ کردبا

or spoke their native language,

یا قسەیان بە زمانی نیشتمانییان کردبا،

most of which were orally passed down.

زۆرینەیان بەشێوەیەکی زارەکی لەناوچوون.

As of now, there are 567 federally recognized tribes in the United States,

ئێستا، ٥٦٧ ھۆزی سەربەخۆی ناسراو ھەن لە ویلایەتە یەکگرتووەکانی ئەمریکا،

when there used to be countless more.

لە کتێکدا بێ شومار زیادیان دەکرد.

In my father's words,

لە قسەکانی باوکمەوە،

"Being Native is not about wearing long hair in braids.

"نیشتمانی بوون تەنھا ھۆنینەوەی قژێکی درێژ نییە.

It's not about feathers or beadwork.

تەنھا کاری پەڕ و زەنگیانەکاری نییە.

It's about the way we all center ourselves in the world as human beings."

بە ناوەند کردنی خۆمانە لە جیھانی مرۆڤایەتیدا."

After traveling with this film for over a year,

دوای گەشتکردن لەگەڵ ئەو فیلمە بۆ زیاتر لە ساڵێک،

I met indigenous people from around the world,

ھاوڵاتی ڕەسەنم دەبینی لە سەرتاسەری جیھان,

from the Ainu of Japan,

لە ئەینوی ژاپۆن،

Sami of Scandinavia,

سامی سکاندیناڤیا،

the Maori

ماوری

and many more.

و زۆر زیاتر.

And they were all dealing with the exact same struggle

و ھەموویان لەگەڵ ھەمان ململانێدا ڕەفتاریان دەکرد

to preserve their language and culture.

بۆ پاراستنی زمان و کلتوریان.

At this moment, I not only realize the power storytelling has

لەم ساتەدا، من تەنھا ھەست بە ھێزی چیرۆک خوێندنەوەکە ناکەم کە ھەیەتی

to connect all of us as human beings

بۆ بەستنەوەی ھەموومان وەک مرۆڤ

but the responsibility that comes with this power.

بەڵکو ئەو بەرپرسیاریەتییەش کە لەگەڵ ئەم ھێزە دێت.

It can become incredibly dangerous when our stories are rewritten or ignored,

دەکرێت زۆر مەترسیدار بێ ئەگەر چیرۆکەکانمان بنوسرێنەوە یا فەرامۆش بکرێن،

because when we are denied identity,

چونکە کاتێک نکۆڵی لە ناسنامەمان دەکرێت،

we become invisible.

ئێمە ون دەبین.

We're all storytellers.

ئێمە ھەموومان چیرۆک بێژین.

Reclaiming our narratives and just listening to each other's

گێڕانەوەی چیرۆکەکانمان و گوێگرتن بۆ چیرۆکی یەکتری

can create a portal that can transcend time itself.

دەتوانێت دەروازەیەک دروست بکات کە بتوانێ خودی کات تێپەڕێنێت.
