When I was four years old,

my dad taught me the Taos Pueblo Hoop Dance,

a traditional dance born hundreds of years ago in Southwestern USA.

A series of hoops are created out of willow wood,

and they're threaded together to create formations of the natural world,

그걸 서로 연결하며 자연의 모습을 만들어 내고

showing the many beauties of life.

생명의 아름다움을 표현합니다.

In this dance, you're circling in a constant spin,

이 춤에서 계속 빙빙 도는 동작은

mimicking the movement of the Sun

태양의 움직임을 흉내낸 것입니다.

and the passage of time.

시간의 흐름도 의미하죠.

Watching this dance was magic to me.

이 춤을 볼 때면 저는 마법에 걸린 느낌이었습니다.

Like with a time capsule,

마치 타임캡슐을 타고

I was taking a look through a cultural window to the past.

창문을 통해 과거의 문화를 보는 것만 같았어요.

I felt a deeper connection

깊은 유대감이 느껴졌습니다.

to how my ancestors used to look at the world around them.

저희 조상들이 주변 세상을 어떻게 바라보았는지 느껴졌죠.

Since then, I've always been obsessed with time capsules.

그 후로, 저는 타임 캡슐에 항상 집착해왔어요.

They take on many forms,

거기에는 여러 형태가 있지만

but the common thread is that they're uncontrollably fascinating

우리 인간이라는 존재가 감당하기 어려울 만큼 매력적이라는

to us as human beings,

because they're portals to a memory,

and they hold the important power of keeping stories alive.

As a filmmaker and composer,

it's been my journey to find my voice,

reclaim the stories of my heritage and the past

and infuse them into music and film time capsules to share.

To tell you a bit about how I found my voice,

제 목소리를 어떻게 찾았는지 조금 말씀드리기 위해

I'd like to share a bit about how I grew up.

저의 성장 과정을 먼저 알려드리는 것이 좋겠네요.

In Southern California, I grew up in a multigenerational home,

저는 남부 캘리포니아의 다세대 가정에서 자랐습니다.

meaning I lived under the same roof

말하자면, 한 지붕 아래에서

as my parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents.

부모님, 고모들, 삼촌들 그리고 조부모님이 함께 살았죠.

My mother is Dutch-Indonesian and Chinese with immigrant parents,

제 어머니는 네덜란드계 인도네시아인과 중국인 이민자 부모에게서 태어나셨습니다.

and my father is Ojibwe

그리고 오지브와 족인 저희 아버지는

and an enrolled tribal member

캔자스 북동 지역 대초원의 포타와토미 부족 일원으로

of the Prairie Band's Potawatomi Tribe in Northeastern Kansas.

원주민 등록이 되어 있는 분이셨죠.

So one weekend I'd be learning how to fold dumplings,

그래서 저는 어떤 주에는 만두 빚는 방법을 배우고

and the next, I'd be traditional-style dancing

다음 주에는 인디언 모임에서 전통 춤을 배웠습니다.

at a powwow,

immersed in the powerful sounds of drums and singers.

힘찬 북 소리와 노래 소리에 빠져들면서 말이죠.

Being surrounded by many cultures was the norm,

여러 인디언 문화에 둘러싸여 지내는 것은 당연한 것이었지만

but also a very confusing experience.

또한 아주 혼란스러운 경험이었죠.

It was really hard for me to find my voice,

제 목소리를 찾는 일은 정말 어려웠습니다.

because I never felt I was enough --

왜냐하면 제가 그럴 자격이 없다고 느껴졌거든요.

never Chinese, Dutch-Indonesian or Native enough.

중국인도, 네덜란드게 인도네시아인도, 원주민으로서도 자격이 없었죠.

Because I never felt I was a part of any community,

어떤 공동체에도 소속감을 느낄 수 없었기 때문에

I sought to learn the stories of my heritage

저는 제 핏줄의 관한 이야기를 배우기로 찾아나섰습니다.

and connect them together to rediscover my own.

그리고 그것들을 연결해서 저만의 것을 다시 발견하려 했어요.

The first medium I felt gave me a voice was music.

저의 목소리를 느낄 수 있는 첫 수단은 음악이었어요.

With layers of sounds and multiple instruments,

여러 소리와 악기들을 겹겹이 쌓으며

I could create soundscapes and worlds that were much bigger than my own.

제 주변보다 더 큰 세계와 음악적 풍경을 창조할 수 있었습니다.

Through music, I'm inviting you into a sonic portal

저의 추억과 감정으로 통하는 소리의 문으로 여러분을 초대하고

of my memories and emotions,

and I'm holding up a mirror to yours.

여러분의 추억과 감정을 투영할 수 있습니다.

One of my favorite instruments to play is the guzheng zither,

제가 즐겨 연주하는 악기는 '고쟁'이라는 현악기입니다.

a Chinese harp-like instrument.

하프와 비슷한 중국 악기죠.

While the hoop dance is hundreds of years old,

후프 댄스는 수백 년 전에 생겨났지만

the guzheng has more than 2,000 years of history.

고쟁은 2000년 이상의 역사를 갖고 있습니다.

I'm playing the styles that greatly influence me today,

저는 요즘 큰 영향을 받은 음악 스타일을 연주합니다.

like electronic music,

예를 들면 전자 음악을

with an instrument that was used to play traditional folk music long ago.

옛날에 전통 민속음악을 연주하던 악기로 연주하고 있는 거죠.

And I noticed an interesting connection:

저는 거기에서 흥미로운 연결고리를 발견했는데요.

the zither is tuned to the pentatonic scale,

고쟁은 5 음계로 조율됩니다.

a scale that is universally known in so many parts of music

전 세계적으로 정말 많은 음악에서 널리 알려져 있는 음계이죠.

around the world,

전 세계적으로요.

including Native American folk songs.

미국 인디언 원주민의 민속음악도 마찬가지였습니다.

In both Chinese and Native folk,

중국과 인디언 민속음악 모두에게서

I sense this inherent sound of longing and holding onto the past,

과거를 열망하고, 과거를 지키려는 듯한 고유의 소리를 느낄 수 있었고,

an emotion that greatly drives the music I create today.

그 감정으로 오늘날 저의 음악을 창조할 수 있었습니다.

At the time, I wondered if I could make this feeling of immersion

그럴 때면, 그런 몰입감을 더 강하게 이끌어낼 수 있을지 궁금해졌죠.

even more powerful,

by layering visuals and music --

음악과 영상을 겹침으로써 말이죠.

visuals and images on top of the music.

음악 위에 영상과 이미지를 더하는 것입니다.

So I turned to internet tutorials to learn editing software,

그래서 저는 편집 기술을 배우려고 인터넷 강의를 듣기 시작했고

went to community college to save money

돈을 아끼기 위해 지역 대학을 다니며

and created films.

영화를 만들었습니다.

After a few years experimenting,

몇년 동안 경험을 쌓고 나서 17살이 되었을 때,

I was 17 and had something I wanted to tell and preserve.

이야기로 남기고 싶은 무언가가 떠올랐습니다.

It started with a question:

What happens when a story is forgotten?

I lead with this in my latest documentary film,

"Smoke That Travels,"

which immerses people into the world of music, song, color and dance,

as I explore my fear that a part of my identity, my Native heritage,

저의 정체성, 조상의 유산이 시간이 지나면서 잊혀지는 것에 대한

will be forgotten in time.

Many indigenous languages are dying due to historically forced assimilation.

과거부터 공동체에 강제로 동화되면서 많은 토착어들이 사라지고 있습니다.

From the late 1800s to the early 1970s,

1800년대 후반부터 1970년대 초반까지는

Natives were forced into boarding schools,

원주민들은 강제로 기숙학교를 다녀야 했고,

where they were violently punished if they practiced traditional ways

그곳에서 전통적인 방식으로 행동하거나 원주민 언어로 대화하면

or spoke their native language,

폭력적인 처벌을 받았습니다.

most of which were orally passed down.

원주민 언어 대부분은 입에서 입으로 전해졌죠.

As of now, there are 567 federally recognized tribes in the United States,

그 때문에 현재 미국에서 공식적으로 인정받는 부족은 567개에 불과합니다.

when there used to be countless more.

과거에는 이보다 셀 수 없을 정도로 많았었죠.

In my father's words,

아버지는 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.

"Being Native is not about wearing long hair in braids.

"원주민으로 사는 것은 머리를 길게 땋고 있는 것이 아니다.

It's not about feathers or beadwork.

깃털이나 구슬 세공을 하는 것도 아니다.

It's about the way we all center ourselves in the world as human beings."

그것은 우리가 인간으로서 스스로를 세상의 중심에 두고 사는 것이다."

After traveling with this film for over a year,

이 영화를 들고 일 년 넘게 돌아다니며

I met indigenous people from around the world,

저는 전 세계의 토착민들을 만났습니다.

from the Ainu of Japan,

일본의 아이누족,

Sami of Scandinavia,

스칸디나비아의 사미인,

the Maori

마오리족,

and many more.

그 외에 더 있죠.

And they were all dealing with the exact same struggle

이들 모두가 같은 싸움을 하고 있었습니다.

to preserve their language and culture.

그들의 언어와 문화를 지키기 위해서 말이죠.

At this moment, I not only realize the power storytelling has

그 순간, 저는 이야기에는 인간을 연결해주는 힘뿐만 아니라

to connect all of us as human beings

but the responsibility that comes with this power.

그 힘에 뒤따르는 책임감을 깨달았습니다.

It can become incredibly dangerous when our stories are rewritten or ignored,

우리 이야기가 잘못 쓰여지거나 무시당하면 대단히 위험해질 수 있습니다.

because when we are denied identity,

우리 정체성을 인정받지 못하면 투명인간처럼 취급받기 때문입니다.

we become invisible.

We're all storytellers.

우리는 모두가 이야기를 전하는 사람들입니다.

Reclaiming our narratives and just listening to each other's

우리의 이야기를 되찾고 서로에게 귀를 기울이는 것만으로도

can create a portal that can transcend time itself.

시간 그 자체를 초월할 수 있는 문을 만들 수 있습니다.
