It is often said that the stories of history are written by its victors,

زۆرجار وتراوە چیرۆکەکانی مێژوو لە لایەن پاڵەوانەکانەوە دەنوسرێت،

but if this is true,

بەڵام ئەگەر ئەوە ڕاستە،

what becomes of the downtrodden,

چی بەسەر ستەم لێکراوەکان دێت،

and how can they ever hope to aspire for something greater

وە چۆن ھیچ کاتێک دەتوانن ھیوای شتێکی گەورەتر بخوازن

if they are never told the stories of their own glorious pasts?

ئەگەر ھەرگیز چیرۆکی ڕابردووە شکۆدارەکەیان نەڵێن؟

Ostensibly, I stand before you as a mere maker of clothing,

بە ڕووکەش، من لە پێش ئێوە وەستاوم تەنیا وەک دروستکەرێکی قوماش،

but within the folds of ancient fabrics and modern textiles,

بەڵام لە ناو دەقی کوتاڵە کۆنەکان و چنینی نوێ،

I have found a higher calling.

من بانگەوازێکی بڵندترم دۆزیەوە.

Through my work as a designer,

لەناو کارەکەم وەك نەخشەدانەر،

I've discovered the importance of providing representation

گرنگی دابین کردنی نوێنەرايەتیم دۆزیەوە

for the marginalized members of our society,

بۆ ئەندامە پەراوێزخراوەکانی کۆمەڵگاکەمان،

and the importance of telling the most vulnerable among us

وە گرنگی وتنی بێ دەسەڵاترین کەس لە ناو ئێمە

that they no longer have to compromise themselves

کە چیتر پێویست ناکات خۆیان چارەسەر بکەن

just so they can fit in with an uncompromising majority.

بەم جۆرە دەگونجێن لەگەڵ زۆرینەی چارەسەرنەکراوەکان.

It turns out that fashion,

ئەوە وا دەردەکەوێت کە مۆدە،

a discipline many of us consider to be trivial,

پەروەردەکردنی زۆرێک لە ئێمە بێ بایەخ دادەنرێ،

can actually be a powerful tool for dismantling bias

بەڕاستی دەتوانێت ببێت بە کەرەستەیەک بۆ نەھێشتنی لادان

and bolstering the self-images of underrepresented populations.

وە پاڵپشتی وێنەی خودی بە نەشێواندنی خەڵک

My interest in using design as a vehicle for social change

ئارەزووی من لە نەخشەدانان وەک بارھەڵگرێک بۆ گۆڕانە کۆمەڵایەتییەکان

happens to be a personal one.

ڕوودەدات بۆ بوون بە کەسی.

As a Nigerian American, I know how easily the term "African"

هەروەك نايجيرى ئەمريكى، دەزانم چەند ئاسانە زاراوەی" ئەفريقى "

can slip from being an ordinary geographic descriptor

دەتوانێ بخزێت لە بوون بە دەستپێکەرێکی جوگرافی سەرەتایی

to becoming a pejorative.

بۆ بوون بە ڕسوايەک

For those of us from this beautiful continent,

بۆ ئێمە و مانان لەم کیشوەرە جوانە،

to be African is to be inspired by culture

بوون بە ئەفریقی پابەند بوونە بە کلتور

and to be filled with undying hope for the future.

وە پڕ بوون لە ھیوای نەمر بۆ داھاتوو.

So in an attempt to shift the misguided perceptions that many have

کەواتە لە ھەوڵدان بۆ گۆڕینی تێبینیە نا ماقولەکان کە زۆرێک ھەیانە

about the place of my birth,

دەربارەی شوێنی لە دایک بوونم,

I use design as a means to tell stories,

من نەخشە بە مەبەستی گێڕانەوەی چیرۆک بەکاردەھێنم،

stories about joy,

چيرۆك دەربارەى شادى،

stories about triumph,

چيرۆك دەربارەى سەركەوتن،

stories about perseverance all throughout the African diaspora.

چیرۆك دەربارەی تێکۆشان بە درێژایی ئەفریقای ئاوارە.

I tell these stories

ئەم چیرۆکانەم گێڕایەوە

as a concerted effort to correct the historical record,

وەك ئەرکێکی دوانی بۆ ڕاستکردنەوەی تۆماری مێژوو،

because, no matter where any of us is from,

چونکە، گرنگ نیە ھەریەك لە ئێمە لە کوێوە ھاتووە،

each of us has been touched by the complicated histories

ھەریەك لە ئێمە مێژوویەکی ئاڵۆزی ھەبوو

that brought our families to a foreign land.

کە خێزانەکانمانی بۆ خاخێکی بێگانە بردبوو.

These histories shape the way we view the world,

ئەو مێژووانە شێوازی بینینی ئێمەیە بۆ جیھان،

and they mold the biases we carry around with us.

وە قاڵبی لاریەکانیان کرد کە لەگەڵ خۆمان ھەڵمان گرتبوو.

To combat these biases,

بۆ بەرەنگار بوونەوەی ئەو لاریانە،

my work draws aesthetics from different parts of the globe

کارەکەم وێنەی جوان دەکێشێ لە بەشە جیاوازەکانی زەوی

and crafts a narrative about the importance

وە ھونەری چیرۆك دەربارەی گرنگی

of fighting for inclusivity.

شەڕکردن بۆ ھەمە لایەنی.

By refashioning images from classic European art

بۆ نوێکردنەوەی وێنەکان لە ھونەری ئەوروپی کۆن

and marrying them with African aesthetics,

وە تێکەڵ کردنیان لەگەڵ جوانیەکانی ئەفریقا،

I am able to recast people of color in roles of prominence,

دەتوانم دەرکەوتنی مرۆڤە ڕەنگ جیاوازەکان داڕێژمەوە،

providing them with a degree of dignity

پێدانی پلەی شکۆداری بە ئەوان

they didn't have in earlier times.

کە لە کۆندا نەیان بووە.

This approach subverts the historically accepted narrative of African inferiority,

ئەم ڕێبازە مێژووی چیرۆکە قبوڵکراوەکانی ئەفریقیە نا تەواوەکان دەڕووخێنێ،

and it serves as inspiration for people of color

وە ئەوە بیروڕایەك بە خەڵکانی ڕەنگ جیاواز دەبەخشێ

who have grown wary of seeing themselves depicted without sophistication

کە ھۆشیاری پێدان لە بینینی خۆیان وەسف کراون بەبێ کارامەیی

and without grace.

وە بەبێ جوانی.

Each of these culture-bending tapestries

ھەریەک لەم لادانانە لە کلتوری قوماش

becomes a tailored garment

بووبە پۆشاکی بەرگدروو

or a silk scarf, like the one I am very coincidentally wearing right now.

یان ملپێچی ئاوریشم، کە من ئێستا زۆر دەیپۆشم.

And even when surrounded in a structure of European classicism,

هەتا کاتێک چوار دەور درابووين بە ياسای ئەوروپای کلاسيزم،

these narratives boldly extoll the merits of African empowerment.

ئەم چیرۆکانە مەردانە بەھای دەسەڵاتی ئەفریقای بەرەو پێش برد.

In this way, the tools of the masters become masterworks

لەو ڕێگەيە، کەرەستەکانی گەورەکان دەبن بە کاری گەورەکان

to celebrate those who were once subservient.

بۆ پيرۆز کردنی ئەوانەی کە يەکەم شوێن کەوتە بوون

This metaphor extends beyond the realm of art

ئەو ميتافۆرە لە جيهانی هونەری بەرفراوان دەبێت

and out into the real world.

هەروەها لەدەرەوەی جيهانە ڕاستەقينەکە.

Whether worn by refugees or world-changing entrepreneurs,

ئەگەر لەلایەن پەنابەرەکانەوە بپۆشرێ، دەسپێشخەرەکانی گۆڕینی جیھان،

when people are allowed the freedom to present themselves

کاتێک خەڵکی ئازاد بوون لە پیشاندانی خۆیان

in a manner that celebrates their own unique identities,

لە ڕەوتێك دا کە ناسنامە بێ ھاوتاکەیان پیرۆز دەکرد،

a magical thing happens.

شتی جادووی ڕوودەدەن.

We stand taller.

ئێمە بەھێزتر دەبین.

We're more proud and self-aware

سەربەرزترین وە هۆشياری خودين

because we're presenting our true, authentic selves.

چونکە ڕاستيەکانمان پێش کەش دەکەين ڕاستی خۆمان.

And those of us who are around them in turn become more educated,

وە ئێمەو مانان کە لەدەوری ئەوانين لەو ڕووەوە ڕووناكبیرتر دەبێت،

more open and more tolerant of their different points of view.

زۆر کراوە و زۆر بەرگە گرتوو لە چەند بيرو ڕايەکيان.

In this way, the clothes that we wear

بەو شێوەيە جلوبەرگەکان کە لەبەری دەکەين

can be a great illustration of diplomatic soft power.

دەتوانێت ببێتە هەڵوێستێکی مەزن بۆ هێزی نەرمی ديبلۆماسی.

The clothes that we wear can serve as bridges

پۆشاکەکانی دەيپۆشين خزمەتمان دەکات وەك پردێك

between our seemingly disparate cultures.

لەنێوان کلتورە جياوەزەکانمان.

And so, yeah, ostensibly I stand before you as a mere maker of clothing.

وە، بەڵێ، وادیارە من لە پێش ئێوە وەستاوم وەك قوماش دروستکەرێکی تەنیا.

But my work has always been about more than fashion.

بەڵام کارەکەم هەميشە لە مانای مۆد زياتر بووە.

It has become my purpose to rewrite the cultural narratives

ئەوە بووە مەبەستی من بۆ نوسينەوەی چيرۆکەکانی کەلتور

so that people of color can be seen in a new and nuanced light,

هەروەها خەڵکی ڕەنگ دەتوانرێت ببينرێت لە ڕووناکيەکی نوێ و جياوازيەکی بچووکدا،

and so that we,

هەروەها کە ئێمە،

the proud children of sub-Saharan Africa,

منداڵە مەزنەکانی ئەفریقای ساھەرانی دووەمی،

can traverse the globe

دەتوانن گۆی زەوی تێبپەڕێنن

while carrying ourselves with pride.

کاتێک خۆمان سەربەرز دەبینین.

It was indeed true that the stories of history

ئەوە ڕاست بوو کە چیرۆکەکانی مێژوو

were told by its old victors,

لەلایەن پاڵەوانە کۆنەکانی وتراوە،

but I am of a new generation.

بەڵام من لە نەتەوەیەکی نوێم.

My work speaks for those

کارەکەم قسە لەسەر ئەوانە دەکات

who will no longer let their futures be dictated by a troubled past.

کە چیتر ڕێگا نادەن ڕابردووە ناخۆشەکەیان کاریگەری ھەبێت لەسەر داھاتویان.

Today, we stand ready to tell our own stories

ئەمڕۆ، ئێمە وەستاوین و ئامادەین بۆ وتنی چیرۆکەکانمان

without compromise, without apologies.

بەبێ سازان، بەبێ پۆزش

But the question still remains:

بەڵام پرسیارەکە ھێشتا ماوە:

are you prepared for what you are about to hear?

تۆ ئامادەی بۆ ئەوەی کە گوێت لێ دەبێ؟

I hope you are, because we are coming regardless.

ھیوادارم ئامادەبن، چونکە ئێمە دێین ھەرچۆنێک بێت.
