We have made it quite clear to these people

We also had someone else who said,

An infinite number of monkeys

could never write the works of Shakespeare.

We know this because they did an experiment."

그분들이 실험을 했었기 때문에 저희도 알고는 있습니다.

Yes, they gave 12 monkeys a typewriter for a week,

and after a week, they only used it as a bathroom.

So the main element though, the main complaint we get --

If you ever think that your life is rubbish,

always remember

there's another you that's made much worse decisions than that.

If you ever think, "Ah, I want to end it all,"

Remember that in the majority of universes,

you don't even exist in the first place.

This to me, in its own strange way,

is very, very comforting.

Now reincarnation, that's another thing gone -- the afterlife.

But it's not gone.

Science actually says

we will live forever.

Well, there is one proviso.

We won't actually live forever. You won't live forever.

Your consciousness, the you-ness of you, the me-ness of me --

여러분의 의식, 여러분 다움이라던가 나다움 같은 것들이

that gets this one go.

이러한 것들이 지속하게 하죠.

But every single thing that makes us,

하지만 우리가 만들어내는 모든 것들과,

every atom in us,

우리의 모든 원자들은,

has already created a myriad of different things

무수히 많은 다른 것들을 만들었고

and will go on to create a myriad of new things.

새로운 무수한 것들을 만들어 낼 것입니다.

We have been mountains

우리가 산이였고

and apples and pulsars

사과였거나, 펄사((눈에 보이지는 않지만 주기적으로 빠른 전파나 방사선을 방출하는 천체)가 있고

and other people's knees.

또한 타인들의 무릎이었습니다.

Who knows, maybe one of your atoms was once Napoleon's knee.

누가 알겠습니까, 여러분의 원자 중 하나가 나폴레옹의 무릎일지도요.

That is a good thing.

Unlike the occupants of the universe,

the universe itself is not wasteful.

We are all totally recyclable.

And when we die,

Understanding, to me,

does not remove the wonder and the joy.

And I can with all honesty

And that is all of these different things -- the love for my child.

그리고 이건 또 다른 것들인데요- 제 자식들에 대한 사랑이요.

I have a son. His name is Archie.

저에게는 아들이 있는데요. 아치라고 합니다.

I'm very lucky,

저는 정말 운이 좋은 편인데요,

because he's better than all the other children.

Now I know you don't think that.

You may well have your own children

That's the wonderful thing about evolution --

the predilection to believe

Now in many ways, that's just a survival thing.

The fact we see here is the vehicle for our genes,

and therefore we love it.

But we don't notice that bit; we just unconditionally love.

That is a wonderful thing.

Though I should say that my son is best

I've done some tests.

And all of these things to me

give such joy and excitement and wonder.

즐거움, 흥미진진함과 궁금증과 같은 것들을 주었죠.

Even quantum mechanics can give you an excuse

심지어 양자 역학은 저에게

for bad housework, for instance.

집안일에 서투름에 대한 핑계가 되어 줍니다.

Perhaps you've been at home for a week on your own.

예를 들어 여러분이 일주일동안 여러분 집에 혼자 머무르게 된다면

You house is in a terrible state.

Your partner is about to return.

여러분의 배우자가 돌아오게 될 쯤.

You think, what should I do?

Do nothing.

아무것도 하지마세요.

All you have to do

여러분이 해야 할 일은,

is, when she walks in, using a quantum interpretation,

그녀가 집에 들어왔을 때, 양자 해석을 이용하여

say, "I'm so sorry.

"미안해,

I stopped observing the house for a moment,

내가 한동안 집을 잘 보살피려는것을 멈추었다가

and when I started observing again,

everything had happened."

That's the strong anthropic principle of vacuuming.

For me, it's a very, very important thing.

Even on my journey up here --

the joy that I have on my journey up here every single time.

If you actually think, you remove the myth and there is still something wonderful.

잘 생각해보시면 신화적인 요소를 없애더라도 여전히 멋있는 것들이 있습니다.

I'm sitting on a train.

저는 기차에 앉아 있어요.

Every time I breathe in,

매번 제가 숨을 쉴때,

I'm breathing in a million-billion-billion

atoms of oxygen.

I'm sitting on a chair.

Even though I know the chair is made of atoms

and therefore actually in many ways empty space,

I find it comfortable.

I look out the window, and I realize

저는 창문을 넘어 보다가, 깨닫게 되죠.

that every single time we stop and I look out that window,

framed in that window,

창문의 프레임을 넘어 보는 것,

wherever we are,

우리가 어디에 있든,

I am observing more life

지구행성을 넘어서

than there is in the rest of the known universe

알려진 우주에 있는것보다도

beyond the planet Earth.

더 많은 삶을 관찰할 것입니다.

If you go to the safari parks

만약에 여러분이 토성이나 목성에 있는

on Saturn or Jupiter,

사파리를 가시에 된다면,

you will be disappointed.

여러분은 실망하시게 될 겁니다.

And I realize I'm observing this

그리고 우리가 알고있는 우주에서

with the brain, the human brain,

가장 복잡한 사물인 인간의 뇌를 통해

the most complex thing in the known universe.

이것들 관찰한다는것을 알게됩니다.

That, to me, is an incredible thing.

And do you know what, that might be enough.

Steven Weinberg, the Nobel laureate, once said,

Now for some people,

And in a pointless universe, that, to me, is a wonderful thing.
