It started out with an article in Red Herring.

So how do we do this?

The tools and the software: there's lots of tools that allow us --

to self-monitor and to monitor all the work.

This is an example of a page history on "flat Earth,"

and you can see some changes that were made.

어떤 것이 바뀌었는지 볼 수 있죠.

What's nice about this page is you can immediately take a look at this

이 페이지에서 좋은 점은 수정사항을 즉시 볼 수 있다는 것입니다.

and see, "OK, I understand now."

When somebody goes and looks at --

they see that someone, an anonymous IP number,

made an edit to my page.

That sounds suspicious. Who is this person?

Somebody looks at it --

they can immediately see highlighted in red

그리고 즉시 빨갛게 하이라이트 되어있는 수정된 부부을 확인합니다.

all of the changes that took place --

to see, OK, well, these words have changed, things like this.

아, 이 말들이 바뀌었구나. 이렇게 말이죠.

So that's one tool that we can use

to very quickly monitor the history of a page.

Another thing that we do within the community

커뮤니티 안에서 우리가 하는 또 다른 방법은

is we leave everything very open-ended.

모든 것을 "끝맺지 않은 상태"로 끝내놓는 것이예요.

Most of the social rules and the methods of work

모든 일의 규칙과 방법은

are left completely open-ended in the software.

완전히 "끝맺지 않은 상태"로 남아있게 됩니다.

All of that stuff is just on Wiki pages.

모든 것은 위키 페이지들에 올라가게 될 뿐이니까요.

And so there's nothing in the software that enforces the rules.

The example I've got up here is the Votes for Deletion page.

So, I mentioned earlier, people type "ASDFASDF" --

제가 아까 말씀드렸듯, 만약 누군가가 ASDFASDF로 페이지를 만들어 놓으면

it needs to be deleted.

Cases like that, the administrators just delete it.

삭제가 되어야 하는데요, 이런 경우는 관리자가 그냥 지웁니다.

There's no reason to have a big argument about it.

뭐 딱히 논쟁거리가 될 이유가 없으니깐요.

But you can imagine there's a lot of other areas where the question is,

is this notable enough to go in an encyclopedia?

백과사전에 들어가도 될 만한 내용인지,

Is the information verifiable? Is it a hoax? Is it true? Is it what?

정보들이 사실인지, 조작된 내용인지, 도대체 무슨 내용인지 논쟁이 되죠.

So we needed a social method for figuring out the answer to this.

그래서 우리는 이 질문들의 대답을 얻기 위해 사회적 토론이 필요했습니다.

And so the method that arose organically within the community

그래서 커뮤니티 안에서 유기적으로 작동하기 위한 토론방법으로

is the Votes For Deletion page.

And in the particular example we have here,

이 삭제 투표 페이지를 만든 것이죠.

it's a film, "Twisted Issues,"

그리고 특별한 예가 또 있는데요, 한 영화가 있었습니다.

and the first person says,

"꼬인 일들"이라고요. 한 사람이 말합니다.

"Now this is supposedly a film. It fails the Google test miserably."

The Google test is you look in Google and see if it's there,

"구글 테스트"는, 무언가가 존재하는지 구글에서 검색해 보는것을 말합니다.

because if something's not even in Google, it probably doesn't exist at all.

왜냐하면 구글에서 검색해서 없으면, 그건 아마도 세상에 존재하지 않는 것일 확률이 높으니까요.

It's not a perfect rule,

but it's a nice starting point for quick research.

뭐 항상 그런건 아니지만, 그 점은 빠른 조사방법의 좋은 시작점이죠.

So somebody says, "Delete it, please. Delete it -- it's not notable."

그 다음 사람이 말합니다. "지워, 이건 없어져도 되겠네."

And then somebody says, "Wait, I found it. I found it in a book,

그 다음 사람은 얘기하죠, "잠깐, 잠깐. 찾았어."

'Film Threat Video Guide: the 20 Underground Films You Must See.'"

"'독립영화 가이드'라는 책에서 찾았어.

꼭 봐야할 20가지 언더그라운드 영화 중 하나라고 하네."

So the next persons says, "Clean it up."

아, 그래. 다음 사람이 말하죠. "그냥 지워."

Somebody says, "I've found it on IMDB. Keep, keep, keep."

또 누가 얘기하죠. "영화 데이터베이스에서도 찾았어. 그냥 남겨놓자."

And what's interesting about this is that the software is --

이 소프트웨어에 대해 흥미로운 점은

these votes are just text typed into a page.

이 투표들은 그냥 페이지에 입력된 글들입니다.

This is not really a vote so much as it is a dialogue.

이건 투표라기보다는 대화에 가깝죠.

Now it is true that at the end of the day,

하루가 끝나갈 때 쯤에

an administrator can go through here and take a look at this and say,

관리자가 여기에 와서 쭉 한번 읽어보고 말하죠.

"OK, 18 deletes, two keeps: we'll delete it."

그래, 18표 지우고 2표 살리고? 그럼 지워야겠네.

But in other cases, this could be 18 deletes and two keeps,

또는 반대로 18표 지우고, 2표 살리고? 그럼 살려야겠네.

and we would keep it, because if those last two keeps say,

"Wait a minute. Nobody else saw this but I found it in a book,

왜냐하면 2표의 살리자는 사람들이 "잠깐만요"

"아무도 이걸 본적이 없지만, 저는 책에서 찾았습니다."

and I found a link to a page that describes it,

"이걸 설명하는 페이지에 대한 링크도 찾았어요. 제가 내일 아침에 정리할테니까

and I'm going to clean it up tomorrow, so please don't delete it,"

지우지말아요." 이러면 그 페이지는 안 지워지죠.

then it would survive.

And it also matters who the people are who are voting.

그래서 역시 누가 투표를 하는지도 중요해요.

Like I say, it's a tight-knit community.

말씀드렸듯이 아주 좁은 커뮤니티거든요.

Down here at the bottom, "Keep, real movie," RickK.

RickK is a very famous Wikipedian who does an enormous amount of work

릭 케이는 한 유명한 위키백과 편집자에요.

with vandalism, hoaxes and votes for deletion.

반달리즘이나 장난, 그리고 삭제 투표에 관해서

His voice carries a lot of weight within the community

엄청나게 참여한 인물이죠.

그의 목소리는 커뮤니티 안에서 힘이 있어요.

because he knows what he's doing.

So how is all this governed?

그래서 어떻게 이것들이 조절되냐고요?

People really want to know about administrators, things like that.

사람들은 관리자 그런 시스템에 대해 진짜 알고싶어해요.

So the Wikipedia governance model, the governance of the community,

그리고 위키백과의 운영 방식이나 운영자들의 커뮤니티에 대해서도요.

is a very confusing, but workable mix of consensus --

meaning we try not to vote on the content of articles,

because the majority view is not necessarily neutral --

some amount of democracy --

all of the administrators --

these are the people who have the ability to delete pages.

That doesn't mean that they have the right to delete pages.

페이지를 마음대로 지운다는 것이 아니에요.

They still have to follow all the rules -- but they're elected by the community.

그들은 여전히 규칙을 지켜야 합니다.

Sometimes people -- random trolls on the Internet --

like to accuse me of handpicking the administrators

to bias the content of the encyclopedia.

I always laugh at this, because I have no idea how they're elected, actually.

You got a hint of that when I mentioned, like,

I give this talk sometimes with Angela,

could get away with doing absolutely anything within Wikipedia,

But the irony is, of course, that Angela can do this because she's the one person

And I also like to say she's the only person

And then there's monarchy,

and that's my role on the community, so ...

I was describing this in Berlin once,

and the next day in the newspaper the headline said,

"I am the Queen of England."

And that's not exactly what I said, but --

the point is my role in the community --

Within the free software world, there's been a long-standing tradition

of the "benevolent dictator" model.

So if you look at most of the major free software projects,

they have one single person in charge

and we don't want to get bogged down too heavily

So as an example of how this can be important:

we recently had a situation where a neo-Nazi website discovered Wikipedia,

최근에 네오나치의 웹사이트가 위키백과를 발견한 사건이 있습니다.

and they said, "Oh, well, this is horrible,

그 사람들은, "오, 이건 최악이다. 유태인의 음모다.

this Jewish conspiracy of a website,

and we're going to get certain articles deleted that we don't like.

우리 맘에 들지 않는 내용들은 지워버리겠다.

And we see they have a voting process, so we're going to send --

너희가 삭제 투표 과정이 있다는 것도 봤으니까,

we have 40,000 members and we're going to send them over

우리 회원이 4만 명이 있으니 그 사람들을 다 불러모아서

and they're all going to vote and get these pages deleted."

모두 투표를 하게해서, 그 페이지들을 지워주마."라고 했어요.

Well, they managed to get 18 people to show up.

간신히 18명을 모았더라고요.

That's neo-Nazi math for you.

그게 네오나치의 계산법이죠.

They always think they've got 40,000 members when they've got 18.

18명의 사람 밖에 못 모으면서, 4만 명의 회원이 있다고 항상 생각하는거죠.

But they managed to get 18 people to come and vote in a fairly absurd way

완벽히 유효한 글 하나를 꽤나 어리석은 방법으로 지우기 위해서

to delete a perfectly valid article.

Of course, the vote ended up being about 85 to 18,

간신히 18명 모은것이죠.

물론 이 투표는 85대 18로 끝났습니다.

so there was no real danger to our democratic processes.

저희 민주주의적 절차에는 아무런 문제가 없다는거죠.

On the other hand, people said, "But what are we going to do?

반면, 어떤 사람들은 묻습니다.

I mean, this could happen.

What if some group gets really seriously organized

"만약에 실제로 어떤 그룹의 사람들이 제대로 뭉쳐서

and comes in and wants to vote?"

단체로 투표를 해버리면 어떻게 할 것인가요?"

Then I said, "Well, fuck it, we'll just change the rules."

That's my job in the community:

to say we won't allow our openness and freedom

to undermine the quality of the content.

And so, as long as people trust me in my role,

then that's a valid place for me.

Of course, because of the free licensing,

if I do a bad job, the volunteers are more than happy to take and leave --

So the final point here is that to understand how Wikipedia works,

it's important to understand that our wiki model is the way we work,

In fact, we're very flexible about the social methodology,

because ultimately, the passion of the community

is for the quality of the work,

not necessarily for the process that we use to generate it.

Jimmy Wales: Yeah, so, a lot of teachers are beginning to use Wikipedia.

There's a media storyline about Wikipedia, which I think is false.

It builds on the storyline of bloggers versus newspapers.

And the storyline is, there's this crazy thing, Wikipedia,

And that turns out to not be true.

The last time I got an email from a journalist saying,

I sent it from my Harvard email address

저는 제 하버드 이메일 계정으로 답장을 보냈습니다.

because I was recently appointed a fellow there.

And I said, "Well, they don't all hate it."

But I think there's going to be huge impacts.

And we actually have a project that I'm personally really excited about,

which is the Wikibooks project,

which is an effort to create textbooks in all the languages.

And that's a much bigger project.

It's going to take 20 years or so to come to fruition.

And for a lot of people in the world,

if I give you an encyclopedia that's written at a university level,

it doesn't do you any good without a whole host of literacy materials

to build you up to the point where you can actually use it.

The Wikibooks project is an effort to do that.

And I think that we're going to see -- it may not even come from us;

there's all kinds of innovation going on.
