I'm going to show you two videos that have gotten a lot of attention

that I think embody this philosophy.

그냥 닌텐도 Wii 컨트롤러인데요.

And they actually use the Nintendo Wii Remote.

For those of you who aren't familiar with this device,

4만원짜리 오락 조종기라 생각하심 됩니다.

it's a $40 video game controller.

Wii는 동작 감지 센서로 유명하죠.

And it's mostly advertised for its motion-sensing capabilities:

그니까 테니스 라켓을 휘두른다거나, 야구공을 치는게 가능한거죠.

so you can swing a tennis racket, or hit a baseball bat.

하지만 제가 보기에 더 흥미로운 것은

But what actually interests me a lot more

이 조종기 맨 끝에

is the fact that in the tip of each controller

고성능의 적외선 카메라가 달려있 다는 것입니다.

is a relatively high-performing infrared camera.

이게 왜 유용한지 두 가지 이유를 보여드리죠.

And I'm going to show you two demos of why this is useful.

여기 컴퓨터와 프로젝터가 있고..

So here, I have my computer set up with the projector,

그 위에 Wii 조종기가 있습니다.

and I have a Wii Remote sitting on top of it.

예를들어 학교라고 해보죠.

And, for example, if you're in a school that doesn't have a lot money,

돈이 별로 없는 학교. 아마 대부분이 그럴텐데..

probably a lot of schools,

아님 여러분 사무실이라 생각해도 되고요.

or if you're in an office environment, and you want an interactive whiteboard,

어쨌든 거기서 전자칠판이 하나 필요하다 치면

보통 200~300만원 정도 합니다.

normally these cost about two to three thousand dollars.

지금부터 Wii 조종기로

So I'm going to show you how to create one with a Wii Remote.

어떻게 양방향 전자 칠판을 만들 수 있는지 보여드리죠.

필요한 장비가 한가지 더 있습니다.

Now, this requires another piece of hardware,

적외선 펜인데요.

which is this infrared pen.

근처 문방구나 전파사에 가시면

You can probably make this yourself for about five dollars

5천원 정도에 구할 수 있습니다.

with a quick trip to the Radio Shack.

배터리도 있구요. 적외선 전구 ON/OFF 스위치가 있고..

It's got a battery, a button and an infrared LED --

이렇게 키면.. 눈엔 안보입니다.

you guys can't see it --

근데 사실 버튼을 누르면 켜집니다. 안보여도요.

but it turns on whenever I push the button.

이게 뭐냐면, 그러니까 제가 이 프로그램을 한번 돌려보죠.

Now, what this means is that if I run this piece of software,

카메라가 적외선 점을 봅니다.

the camera sees the infrared dot,

그럼 우린 이제 카메라에서 화소의 위치를 따서

and I can register the location of the camera pixels

프로젝터에 뿌리는거죠. 전자칠판이 됐네요.

to the projector pixels.

And now this is like an interactive whiteboard surface.

5만원어치의 장비만 있으면 전자칠판이 하나 생기는거죠.

So for about $50 of hardware, you can have your own whiteboard.

그랬더니 3개월만에 다운로드가 50만건이 되더군요.

In the three months this project has been public,

한가지 살짝 꼬집고 싶은건 이게 5만원짜리고 또 싸서 좋긴 하지만,

Although it does do it for 50 dollars,

아무래도 이 방식에 한계가 있는 것이 사실입니다.

there are some limitations of this approach.

하지만 그래도 1퍼센트의 비용만으로

You get about 80 percent of the way there, for one percent of the cost.

기대했던 효과의 80퍼센트를 얻습니다.

한가지 더 멋진 건, 카메라가 이제 여러 점을 동시에 본단 겁니다.

Another nice thing is that a camera can see multiple dots,

그래서 이렇게

so this is actually a multi-touch, interactive whiteboard system as well.

멀티터치 전자칠판이 되는거죠.

두번째로 보여드릴 것은, Wii 조종기가

For the second demo,

I have this Wii Remote that's actually next to the TV.

앞으로 TV를 대체할 거란 겁니다.

화면을 가리키고 있다기보다는,

So it's pointing away from the display, rather than pointing at the display.

화면 너머를 가리키고 있죠.

이게 훌륭한 이유는

And why this is interesting

예를들어 적외선 점이 두개 찍힌 안경을 쓰면,

is that if you put on, say, a pair of safety glasses,

그런 안전용 고글을 쓰면,

that have two infrared dots in them,

이 안보이는 점이 여러분 시선의 방향을

they are going to give the computer an approximation of your head location.

컴퓨터에게 알려준다는 겁니다.

이게 놀라운 이유는

And why this is interesting

이렇게 컴퓨터 모니터에 프로그램이 있다고 했을 때,

is I have this sort of application running on the computer monitor,

3D로 된 방이 있고 그 안에 공이 몇개 있는데 있는데,

which has a 3D room, with some targets floating in it.

그냥 보면 3D같긴 한데..

And you can see that it looks like a 3D room.

kind of like a video game, it sort of looks 3D,

3D 게임 같기도 한데

사실은 그냥 평평하네요.

but for the most part, the image looks pretty flat,

화면의 표면에 갇혀있죠.

and bound to the surface of the screen.

하지만 이렇게 헤드 트래킹을 키면..

But if we turn on head tracking --

컴퓨터가 이렇게 화면의 각도를 바꾸는 겁니다.

the computer can change the image that's on the screen

머리의 움직임에 반응해서요.

and make it respond to the head movements.

So let's switch back to that.

가장 큰 게임 퍼블리셔중에 하나인 EA가

last week announced that Electronic Arts, one of the largest game publishers,

5월에 게임 하나를 발표한다죠.

is releasing a game in May that has a little Easter egg feature

그안에 작은 Easter egg(게임 안에 숨겨진 기능)이 있다네요.

이런 헤드 트래킹을 활용한걸로 말입니다.

for supporting this type of head tracking.

그래서.. 이게 5개월도 안걸렸어요.

And that's from less than five months

제 랩에 프로토타입이 실제로 상용화 되기까지 말입니다.

from a prototype in my lab to a major commercial product.

근데 제가보기에 지금 말씀드린 이 두가지 아이디어보다

But actually, to me, what's almost more interesting

훨씬 놀라운 게 있습니다.

than either of these two projects

is how people actually found out about them.

유튜브가 정말 세상을 바꾸고 있는거죠 세상이 바뀌는 속도가 바뀌었어요.

YouTube has really changed the way, or changed the speed,

한사람의 개인이 자기 아이디어를

in which a single individual

말 그대로 전세계에 퍼뜨릴 수 있으니까요.

can actually spread an idea around the world.

저는 요즘 비디오 카메라를 이용한 연구를 하고 있는데요,

I'm doing some research in my lab with a video camera,

이걸 본 사람이 1주일만에 100만명이 되더군요.

and within the first week, a million people had seen this work,

and literally within days, engineers, teachers and students

문자 그대로 며칠만에 전세계의 기술자, 선생님, 학생들이

자기가 이 기술을 어떻게 활용하는지 어떻게 개선했는지를

from around the world were already posting their own YouTube videos

of them using my system or derivatives of this work.

유튜브에 올리기 시작하더군요.

앞으로 이런 일이 더 많이 생기길 기대합니다.

So I hope to see more of that in the future,

연구자 사회에서부터 동영상 공유를 활용하고

and hope online video distribution to be embraced by the research community.

또 잘 키워줄 수 있었음 하고 바래봅니다.
