But today I've got a personal story to share with you.

This is a picture of my family,

my four siblings -- my mom and I -- taken in 1977.

And we're actually Cambodians.

And this picture is taken in Vietnam.

So how did a Cambodian family end up in Vietnam in 1977?

그렇다면 캄보디아인 가족이 어떻게 1977년에 베트남에 가게되었을까요?

The communist Khmer Rouge

공산주의 단체인 크메르루주가

enters Phnom Penh to liberate their people

베트남 내의 침략전쟁과

from the encroaching conflict in Vietnam,

미국의 폭탄투하로부터 사람들을 구하기 위해서

and American bombing campaigns.

프놈펜으로 들어왔습니다.

Led by peasant-born Pol Pot,

농민 출신인 폴 포트가 이끄는

the Khmer Rouge evacuates people to the countryside

크메르루즈는 사람들을 시골로 대피시켜

in order to create a rural communist utopia,

그 지역에서 공산주의자의 천국을 만들려고 했습니다.

much like Mao Tse-tung's Cultural Revolution in China.

마치 중국 마오쩌뚱의 문화혁명처럼 말입니다.

The Khmer Rouge closes the doors to the outside world.

크메루즈는 바깥세상과의 문을 닫았습니다.

But after four years the grim truth seeps out.

하지만 4년 후에 잔혹한 현실이 새어나왔습니다.

In a country of only seven million people,

인구가 700만명밖에 안되는 나라에서

one and a half million were murdered by their own leaders,

150만명의 사람들이 그들의 지도자에 의해서 죽임을 당했습니다.

their bodies piled in the mass graves of the killing fields.

그들의 시체는 킬링필드를 가득 메웠습니다.

Sophal Ear: So, notwithstanding the 1970s narration,

on April 17th 1975

we lived in Phnom Penh.

And my parents were told by the Khmer Rouge

to evacuate the city because of impending American bombing for three days.

And here is a picture of the Khmer Rouge.

They were young soldiers, typically child soldiers.

And this is very normal now, of modern day conflict,

because they're easy to bring into wars.

The reason that they gave about American bombing wasn't all that far off.

I mean, from 1965 to 1973 there were

more munitions that fell on Cambodia

than in all of World War II Japan,

including the two nuclear bombs

The Khmer Rouge didn't believe in money.

크메루즈는 돈의 가치를 믿지 않았기 때문에

So the equivalent of the Federal Reserve Bank

연방준비은행과 같은 존재였던 캄보디아의 중앙은행이

in Cambodia was bombed.

폭격을 받았습니다.

But not just that, they actually banned money.

하지만 그것뿐만아니라 그들은 돈의 사용자체를 금지시켰습니다.

I think it's the only precedent in which

제 생각에는 돈의 사용자체가 금지된

money has ever been stopped from being used.

유일한 예였던것같습니다.

And we know money is the root of all evil,

but it didn't actually stop evil from happening in Cambodia, in fact.

My family was moved from Phnom Penh to Pursat province.

저의 가족은 프놈펜에서 프루삿 지역으로 옮겼습니다.

This is a picture of what Pursat looks like.

이 사진은 프루삿의 모습입니다.

It's actually a very pretty area of Cambodia,

이곳은 사실 벼농사가 이루어지는

where rice growing takes place.

캄보디아의 아주 아름다운 지역입니다.

And in fact they were forced to work the fields.

그리고 그들은 저기서 일하기를 강요했습니다.

So my father and mother ended up in

그래서 저의 부모님은

a sort of concentration camp, labor camp.

강제 수용소 같은 노동 수용소에 가게 되셨습니다.

And it was at that time that my mother got word

from the commune chief

당시 그 곳을 관리하던 책임자에게

that the Vietnamese were actually asking

베트남정부가 베트남 국적의 사람들에게

for their citizens to go back to Vietnam.

베트남으로 돌아올 것을 요청했다는 이야기를 들었습니다.

And she spoke some Vietnamese,

그리고 그 녀는 어렸을 때 베트남 친구들과

as a child having grown up with Vietnamese friends.

함께 자라서 베트남어를 할 줄 알았습니다.

And she decided, despite the advice of her neighbors,

그리고 그녀의 이웃들의 만류에도 불구하고

that she would take the chance

기회를 잡기로 결심했고

and claim to be Vietnamese

베트남인이라고 밝히고

so that we could have a chance to survive,

우리 가족은 살아남을 수 있는 기회를 가지게 되었습니다.

because at this point they're forcing everybody to work.

And they're giving about --

in a modern-day, caloric-restriction diet, I guess --

they're giving porridge, with a few grains of rice.

그들은 쌀 몇개를 섞은 오트밀 죽을 줬으며

And at about this time actually

당시 우리 아버지는

my father got very sick.

매우 편찮으셨습니다.

And he didn't speak Vietnamese.

그리고 그는 베트남어를 못하셨습니다.

So he died actually, in January 1976.

그래서 그는 1976년 1월에 돌아가셨습니다.

And it made it possible, in fact,

그리고 사실 아버지의 죽음은

for us to take on this plan.

So the Khmer Rouge took us

from a place called Pursat to Kaoh Tiev,

which is across from the border from Vietnam.

And there they had a detention camp

where alleged Vietnamese would be tested, language tested.

And my mother's Vietnamese was so bad

that to make our story more credible,

she'd given all the boys and girls new Vietnamese names.

어머니는 자식들에게 베트남어로 된 이름을 지어줬는데

But she'd given the boys girls' names,

그녀는 아들에게는 딸 이름을 ,

and the girls boys' names.

딸들에게는 아들이름을 지어줬습니다.

And it wasn't until she met a Vietnamese lady

어머니가 베트남 여성을 만날 때까지는 그런지 몰랐고

who told her this, and then tutored her for two days intensively,

그 베트남 여성은 이틀동안 저희 어머니에게 집중적으로 베트남어를 가르쳐줘서

that she was able to go into her exam

어머니가 시험에 임할 수 있게 했습니다.

and -- you know, this was a moment of truth.

그리고 여러분도 아시다시피 이것은 굉장히 중요한 순간이었습니다.

If she fails, we're all headed to the gallows;

그녀가 실패했다면 우리 모두는 교수형에 쳐해졌을 것이고.

if she passes, we can leave to Vietnam.

그녀가 성공했다면 우리는 모두 베트남으로 갈 수 있었습니다.

And she actually, of course -- I'm here, she passes.

그리고 물론 제가 여기 있는 것에서 보시다시피, 저희 어머니는 시험에 통과했습니다.

And we end up in Hong Ngu on the Vietnamese side.

그리고 우리는 홍뉴라고 불리는 베트남 지역으로 옮겨졌고

And then onwards to Chau Doc.

And this is a picture of Hong Ngu, Vietnam today.

A pretty idyllic place on the Mekong Delta.

메콩 삼각주에 위치한 아주 전원적인 곳입니다.

But for us it meant freedom.

하지만 우리에게는 자유를 상징하는 곳입니다.

And freedom from persecution from the Khmer Rouge.

그리고 크메루즈의 박해로부터의 자유를 의미합니다.

Last year, the Khmer Rouge Tribunal,

작년에, UN 이 캄보디아를 도와서 진행한

which the U.N. is helping Cambodia take on,

started, and I decided that as a matter of record

I should file a Civil Complaint

with the Tribunal about my father's passing away.

And I got word last month

that the complaint was officially accepted by the Khmer Rouge Tribunal.

And it's for me a matter of justice for history, and accountability for the future,

because Cambodia remains a pretty lawless place, at times.

Five years ago my mother and I went back to Chau Doc.

5년 전에 저의 어머니와 저는 차우덕에 갔습니다.

And she was able to return to a place

어머니는 자유와 공포를 동시에 상징하던

that for her meant freedom, but also fear,

그 곳으로 돌아갈 수 있었습니다.

because we had just come out of Cambodia.

왜냐하면 우리는 막 캄보디아에서 나왔었습니다.

I'm happy, actually, today, to present her.

이렇게 저희 어머니를 소개하게되어서 사실 전 기쁩니다.

She's here today with us in the audience.
