Some people are obsessed by French wines.

One of my greatest pleasures in life is, I have to admit,

I cannot tell you how much I enjoy watching cities from the sky,

from an airplane window.

Some cities are calmly industrious,

like Dusseldorf

or Louisville.

Others project an energy that they can hardly contain,

like New York

or Hong Kong.

홍콩 같은 곳이죠.

And then you have Paris

or Istanbul,

and their patina full of history.

역사의 고색창연함이 있습니다.

I see cities as living beings.

제게 도시는 살아있는 생물같습니다.

And when I discover them from far above,

높은 곳에서 도시를 발견하면

I like to find those main streets and highways that structure their space.

그 공간을 이루는 거리나 도로를 찾아 보곤 합니다.

Especially at night,

특히 밤에는

when commuters make these arteries look dramatically red and golden:

the city's vascular system performing its vital function

right before your eyes.

But when I'm sitting in my car

after an hour and a half of commute every day,

that reality looks very different.

Isn't it absurd

that we created cars that can reach 130 miles per hour

시속 200km로 달리는 차를 만들었는데

and we now drive them at the same speed as 19th-century horse carriages?

In the US alone,

we spent 29.6 billion hours commuting in 2014.

2014년에만 통근을 위해 296억 시간을 허비했죠.

With that amount of time,

ancient Egyptians could have built 26 Pyramids of Giza.

고대 이집트인들이 피라미드를 26개나 지었을 겁니다.

We do that in one year.

한 해만 그렇다는 거예요.

A monumental waste of time, energy and human potential.

시간, 에너지, 인적 자원의 낭비가 어마어마하죠.

For decades,

지난 수십 년간

our remedy for congestion was simple:

교통혼잡의 해결책은 단순했습니다.

build new roads or enlarge existing ones.

새로운 도로를 만들거나 기존의 도로를 넓히는 거죠.

And it worked.

효과는 있었어요.

It worked admirably for Paris,

파리에서는 꽤 효과가 좋았습니다.

when the city tore down hundreds of historical buildings

수백 개의 역사적 건물들을 허물고

to create 85 miles

135 km 길이의

of transportation-friendly boulevards.

교통 전용 도로를 만든거죠.

And it still works today in fast-growing emerging cities.

급속한 성장세를 보이는 도시라면 지금도 여전히 효과가 있습니다.

But in more established urban centers,

significant network expansions are almost impossible:

교통망을 획기적으로 넓히는 건 거의 불가능해요.

habitat is just too dense,

real estate, too expensive

and public finances, too fragile.

Our city's vascular system is getting clogged, it's getting sick,

우리 도시의 혈관계가 막히고 병들고 있어요.

and we should pay attention.

관심을 기울여야 합니다.

Our current way of thinking is not working.

지금의 우리 사고방식은 도움이 되지 않습니다.

For our transportation to flow,

교통 흐름을 원할히 하려면

we need a new source of inspiration.

새로운 발상의 원천이 필요합니다.

So after 16 years working in transportation,

16년간 교통 분야에서 일하면서

my "aha moment" happened when speaking with a biotech customer.

She was telling me how her treatment

was leveraging specific properties of our vascular system.

"Wow," I thought, "Our vascular system --

all the veins and arteries in our body

우리 몸의 모든 정맥과 동맥은

making miracles of logistics every day."

매일 물류의 기적을 이루는군."

This is the moment I realized

바로 그 순간 깨달았습니다.

that biology has been in the transportation business

그 생명 활동이 이미 수십 억년 동안

for billions of years.

물류사업을 하고 있던 거였죠.

It has been testing countless solutions

수없이 많은 해결책을 시험하며

to move nutrients, gases and proteins.

양분, 산소, 단백질을 운반한 거예요.

It really is the world's most sophisticated transportation laboratory.

실로 세상에서 가장 수준높은 교통 연구실인 셈이죠.

So, what if the solution to our traffic challenges was inside us?

교통문제의 해결책이 바로 우리 몸안에 있다면 어떨까요?

I wanted to know:

제가 알고 싶은 건 이겁니다.

Why is it that blood flows in our veins most of our lives,

우리 혈관은 평생 피가 돌고 있는데

when our big cities get clogged on a daily basis?

왜 대도시 도로는 매일 막히는 걸까요?

And the reality is that you're looking at two very different networks.

사실은 서로 완전히 다른 교통망이죠.

I don't know if you realize,

아실지 모르겠지만

but each of us has 60,000 miles of blood vessels in our bodies --

우리의 몸에는 약 6만마일(96,000 km) 길이의 혈관이 있습니다.

60,000 miles.

6만 마일(96,000 km)예요.

That's two-and-a-half times the Earth's circumference,

지구 둘레 2.5배 길이의 혈관이

inside you.

What it means is that blood vessels are everywhere inside us,

not just under the surface of our skin.

But if you look at our cities,

yes, we have some underground subway systems

and some tunnels and bridges,

터널과 교량도 있고

and also some helicopters in the sky.

하늘에 헬기도 있긴 하죠.

But the vast majority of our traffic is focused on the ground,

하지만 교통 대부분은 지상에만 초점이 맞춰져 있습니다.

on the surface.

표면만 보는 거죠.

So in other words,

while our vascular system uses the three dimensions inside us,

our urban transportation is mostly two-dimensional.

And so what we need is to embrace that verticality.

If our surface grid is saturated,

well, let's elevate our traffic.

This Chinese concept of a bus that can straddle traffic jams --

중국의 이런 버스 개념이라면 막힌 도로 위를 다닐 수 있습니다.

that was an eye-opener on new ways to think about space and movement

도시 공간과 이동에 관한 새로운 사고방식의 눈을 열어주는 사례죠.

inside our cities.

And we can go higher,

더 높이 올라가서

and suspend our transportation like we did with our electrical grid.

전력망에 적용한 것처럼 교통망도 확장할 수 있습니다.

Tel Aviv and Abu Dhabi are talking about testing

텔아비브와 아부다비에서 시험운행을 논의하고 있는 것은

these futuristic networks of suspended magnetic pods.

자력으로 운송체를 매다는 미래형 교통망입니다.

And we can keep climbing, and fly.

더 올라가서 날아다닐 수도 있죠.

The fact that a company like Airbus

에어버스 같은 회사가

is now seriously working on flying urban taxis

날아다니는 택시를 신중히 검토하고 있다는 사실은

is telling us something.

시사하는 바가 큽니다.

Flying cars are finally moving from science-fiction déjà vu

공상과학 소설에서나 보았을 비행 자동차가

to attractive business-case territory.

매력적인 사업 영역으로 옮겨가고 있다는 거죠.

And that's an exciting moment.

정말 기대되는 순간이에요.

So building this 3-D transportation network

즉, 3차원 교통망을 구축하는 것이

is one of the ways we can mitigate and solve traffic jams.

교통체증을 완화하는 해결책 중 하나입니다.

But it's not the only one.

그뿐만 아닙니다.

We have to question

우리가 생각해봐야 할 것은 다른 근본적인 선택 사항입니다.

other fundamental choices that we made, like the vehicles we use.

자동차같은 것들 말이죠.

Just imagine a very familiar scene:

익숙한 장면을 상상해 볼까요.

You've been driving for 42 minutes.

이미 42분 넘게 운전하고 있습니다.

The two kids behind you are getting restless.

뒷좌석에 탄 두 아이들은 지루해하고 있어요.

And you're late.

회사도 지각입니다.

Do you see that slow car in front of you?

앞 차는 느리게 가고 있어요.

Always comes when you're late, right?

꼭 지각일 때만 그런 차가 나타나잖아요.

(Laughter)

That driver is looking for parking.

그 운전자는 주차할 곳을 찾고 있습니다.

There is no parking spot available in the area,

그 부근에는 주차장이 없는데도 말이죠.

but how would he know?

하지만 어떻게 알겠어요?

It is estimated that up to 30 percent of urban traffic is generated

추정으로는 도시 교통의 약 30%가

주차장을 찾는 경우라고 합니다.

by drivers looking for parking.

Do you see the 100 cars around you?

주위에 100대의 차가 있다고 치죠.

Eighty-five of them only have one passenger.

Those 85 drivers could all fit in one Londonian red bus.

그 85명은 버스 한 대에 타면 딱 맞는 인원이에요.

So the question is:

Why are we wasting so much space if it is what we need the most?

Why are we doing this to ourselves?

Biology would never do this.

Space inside our arteries is fully utilized.

At every heartbeat,

a higher blood pressure literally compacts millions of red blood cells

높아진 혈압으로 수백 만개 적혈구를 말 그대로 압축시켜서

into massive trains of oxygen

거대한 산소 운반열차를 만들고

that quickly flow throughout our body.

우리 몸 전체에 신속하게 운반하죠.

And the tiny space inside our red blood cells is not wasted, either.

적혈구 안의 좁은 공간도 낭비되는 법이 없죠.

In healthy conditions,

건강한 상태라면

more than 95 percent of their oxygen capacity is utilized.

적혈구 산소 용량의 95% 이상을 활용하죠.

Can you imagine if the vehicles we used in our cities

우리 도시 자동차 대수의 95%로 꽉 차있는 게

were 95 percent full,

상상이나 되시겠어요?

all the additional space you would have to walk, to bike

보도, 자전거 도로, 여가 공간 등 도시의 모든 여유 공간들이

and to enjoy our cities?

자동차로 채워지는 거죠.

The reason blood is so incredibly efficient

혈액이 그렇게 놀라운 효율을 보이는 이유는

is that our red blood cells are not dedicated

적혈구가 특정 장기나 조직을 목표로 하지 않기 때문입니다.

to specific organs or tissues;

otherwise, we would probably have traffic jams in our veins.

그랬다면 아마 우리 혈관에도 교통 체증이 일어나겠죠.

No, they're shared.

하지만 적혈구는 공유됩니다.

They're shared by all the cells of our body.

우리 몸의 모든 세포들이 적혈구를 공유하고 있어요.

And because our network is so extensive,

그 운송망이 너무나 광범위해서

each one of our 37 trillion cells gets its own deliveries of oxygen

37조 개의 세포 하나하나가 필요한 산소를 공급받습니다.

precisely when it needs them.

Blood is both a collective and individual form of transportation.

But for our cities,

we've been stuck.

We've been stuck in an endless debate

끊임없는 논쟁에 갇힌 상태죠.

between creating a car-centric society or extensive mass-transit systems.

자동차 중심의 사회냐 광범위한 대량 수송체계냐의 사이에 갇혀 있습니다.

I think we should transcend this.

이걸 뛰어 넘어야 합니다.

I think we can create vehicles that combine the convenience of cars

자동차가 갖는 편의성과 철도나 버스의 효율성이 조합된

and the efficiencies of trains and buses.

차량을 만들면 된다고 생각합니다.

Just imagine.

상상해보세요.

You're comfortably sitting in a fast and smooth urban train,

여러분은 빠르고 막힘없는 도시철도로 편안하게 이동합니다.

along with 1,200 passengers.

1200명의 승객과 함께 말이죠.

The problem with urban trains

도시 철도의 문제는

is that sometimes you have to stop five, ten, fifteen times

때로는 5번, 10번, 15번을 정차하고 나서야

before your final destination.

목적지에 도착한다는 겁니다.

What if in this train you didn't have to stop?

만약 정차할 필요가 없는 열차가 있다면 어떨까요?

In this train,

이 열차의 경우는

wagons can detach dynamically while you're moving

각 차량이 주행 중에 유동적으로 분리됩니다.

and become express, driverless buses

각 칸이 고속의 무인 버스가 되어

that move on a secondary road network.

별도의 도로망을 달리게 되죠.

And so without a single stop,

정차할 필요도 없고

nor a lengthy transfer,

줄서서 환승할 필요도 없습니다.

you are now sitting in a bus that is headed toward your suburb.

외곽으로 향하는 버스 칸에 앉아 있기만 하면 됩니다.

And when you get close,

목적지 근처에 다다르면

the section you're sitting in detaches

여러분이 앉아 있는 칸이 분리되고

and self-drives you right to your doorstep.

자가주행으로 목적지 바로 앞까지 데려다주죠.

It is collective and individual at the same time.

대량인 동시에 개별 수송인 것입니다.

This could be one of the shared, modular, driverless vehicles of tomorrow.

이런 공유형 분리식 무인주행 형태가 미래의 교통수단이 될지도 모릅니다.

Now ...

자, 이제

as if walking in a city buzzing with drones,

드론을 타고 도시를 다닌다거나

flying taxis, modular buses and suspended magnetic pods

비행식 택시, 분리형 버스, 현수식 자력 포드도

was not exotic enough,

별 게 아니라면

I think there is another force in action

도시 교통을 휘어잡을

that will make urban traffic mesmerizing.

또 다른 강력한 방법이 있습니다.

If you think about it,

한번 생각해보세요.

the current generation of driverless cars is just trying to earn its way

현재의 무인 자동차는 사람이 만든 교통망에서

into a traffic grid made by and for humans.

단지 경로를 찾아가는 수준입니다.

They're trying to learn traffic rules, which is relatively simple,

단순하게는 교통 법규를 학습시키거나

and coping with human unpredictability,

인간의 예측 불가능성에 대응하도록 하는

which is more challenging.

더 어려운 부분도 시도하고 있죠.

But what would happen when whole cities become driverless?

도시 전체가 무인운전 체계라면 어떻게 될까요?

Would we need traffic lights?

신호등이 필요할까요?

Would we need lanes?

차선이 필요할까요?

How about speed limits?

속도제한도 필요할까요?

Red blood cells are not flowing in lanes.

적혈구는 차선을 따라 이동하지 않죠.

They never stop at red lights.

빨간 신호등에 서는 법도 없습니다.

In the first driverless cities,

최초의 무인운전 도시가 만들어지면

you would have no red lights and no lanes.

신호등도 차선도 없을 겁니다.

And when all the cars are driverless and connected,

모든 차들이 무인운전이고 서로 무선통신으로 연결되면

everything is predictable and reaction time, minimum.

모든 것이 예측될 수 있고 반응시간도 최소화되겠죠.

They can drive much faster

더 빠른 속도로 운전할 수 있고

and can take any rational initiative that can speed them up

더 빨리 이동할 수 있는 합리적인 경로를 선택하고

or the cars around them.

주변 차량 정보도 이용하겠죠.

So instead of rigid traffic rules,

융통성없는 교통법규 대신에

flow will be regulated

교통흐름을 조절하기 위해

by a mesh of dynamic and constantly self-improving algorithms.

유동적으로 계속해서 스스로 알고리즘을 개선시킬 것입니다.

The result: a strange traffic

그 결과로 희한한 교통체계가 만들어지겠죠.

that mixes the fast and smooth rigor of German autobahns

빠르고 끊김없는 독일 아우토반의 엄격함과

and the creative vitality of the intersections of Mumbai.

뭄바이의 교차로같은 활기가 혼재된 모습일 겁니다.

Traffic will be functionally exuberant.

교통 기능도 생기가 넘칠 거예요.

It will be liquid like our blood.

혈액처럼 액체가 흐르는 모습이겠죠.

And by a strange paradox,

역설적이게도

the more robotized our traffic grid will be,

교통 체계가 더욱 자동화될수록

the more organic and alive its movement will feel.

그 움직임은 더욱 유기적이고 생동감있게 느껴질 것입니다.

So yes,

예, 맞아요.

biology has all the attributes of a transportation genius today.

우리 생체의 수송 기능은 모든 면에서 뛰어납니다.

But this process has taken billions of years,

하지만 그러기까지 수십 억 년이 걸렸죠.

and went through all sorts of iterations and mutations.

온갖 반복과 변이의 과정을 거친 결과입니다.

We can't wait billions of years to evolve our transportation system.

우리 교통체계를 진화시키기 위해 수십 억 년을 기다릴 수는 없겠죠.

We now have the dreams,

우리는 이제 꿈이 있습니다.

the concepts

개념도 이해하고 있고

and the technology

기술도 있습니다.

to create 3-D transportation networks,

3차원 교통망을 창조할 수도 있고

invent new vehicles

새로운 교통수단도 발명하며

and change the flow in our cities.

우리 도시의 교통흐름을 바꿀 수 있습니다.
