"I wonder if he's had the surgery yet ...

Oh, now I'm looking at his crotch.

아이구, 나도 모르게 자꾸 사타구니를 쳐다보게 되네.

Look to the right, that's a safe place to look."

다른 쪽을 봐야겠어. 오른쪽은 쳐다봐도 괜찮겠지."

"내가 알아봤지! 진짜 남자면 저런 엉덩이일리가 없거든."

"Yes, I knew it! No real man has hips like those."

"My friend's daughter is transgender --

"Oh my gosh, he is so brave.

I would totally support his right to use the men's bathroom.

Wait, but how does he use the bathroom?

How does he have sex?"

OK, OK, let's stop those hypothetical questions

네, 그럼 너무 깊숙이 들어가기 전에 이쯤에서

before we get too close for my comfort.

가상의 질문들을 마무리 해볼까요?

I mean, don't get me wrong,

그렇다고 오해는 하지 마세요.

I did come here today to share my personal experiences being transgender,

오늘 여기에서 트랜스젠더로서 겪은 제 경험을 나누러 온 거니까요.

but I did not wake up this morning wanting to tell an entire audience

아침에 일어나면서 오늘 청중들에게

about my sex life.

내 성생활에 대해 말해야겠다고 생각하진 않았지만요.

Of course, that's the problem with being trans, right?

People are pretty much always wondering how we have sex

대부분의 사람들은 트랜스젠더가 어떻게 섹스를 하고

and what kind of equipment we're working with below the belt.

하반신에 어떤 기구를 착용하는지 궁금해하죠.

Being trans is awkward.

트랜스젠더가 되는 건 불편한 일이예요.

And not just because the gender I was assigned at birth

제가 태어나면서 가지게 된 성이

mismatches the one I really am.

진정한 제 자신과 맞지 않아서만은 아니예요.

Being trans is awkward

트랜스젠더로서 불편한 건

because everyone else gets awkward when they're around me.

모두들 저를 어떻게 대해야 할 지 곤란해하기 때문입니다.

People who support me and all other trans people wholeheartedly

저를 인정해주는 사람들이나 다른 트랜스젠더들은

뭔가 잘못된 말을 할까봐 진심으로 두려워합니다.

are often so scared to say to wrong thing,

so embarrassed to not know what they think they should,

본인들이 옳다고 생각하는 것에 대해 알지 못하는 것을

that they never ask.

너무나 부끄러워해서 물어보지도 않아요.

Part of what was so nerve-racking about coming out as transgender

트랜스젠더라고 밝힐 때 가장 걱정되는 부분은

was knowing that people wouldn't know what I meant.

사람들이 그게 무슨 뜻인지 알지 못하는 것입니다.

And when someone comes out as gay,

누군가 게이라고 밝힐 때

people know what that means,

사람들은 그게 무슨 뜻인지 알잖아요.

but when you come out as trans,

그렇지만 트랜스젠더들은

you have to face the misconceptions

사람들의 오해를 맞닥뜨리게 되죠.

that will color other people's impressions of you

사람들은 그 오해에 기반해서 당신을 평가하게 됩니다.

even after you've educated them ...

심지어는 당신이 그 사람들에게 알려준 뒤에도요.

And you will have to educate them.

사실 당신은 꼭 그 사람들을 가르쳐 줘야 합니다.

When I came out,

저는 트랜스젠더라고 고백할 때

I wrote at 10-page encyclopedic document

백과사전같은 10페이지의 서류와

with a zip-file attachment of music and videos

음악과 비디오를 담은 압축 파일을

that I sent to every single person I came out to.

커밍아웃한 모두에게 보냈습니다.

(Laughter)

And I kept it in my email signature for months afterwards,

그리고 그 이후에도 몇개월동안 메일 서명으로 그 파일을 썼죠.

because you also don't ever stop coming out.

커밍아웃하는 것을 멈춰서는 안 되거든요.

I came out to the accountant helping me with my taxes

제 세금문제를 도와주는 회계사나

and the TSA agents who didn't know which one of them should pat me down,

교통안전청 사람에게도 커밍아웃했습니다.

거기선 남자가 저를 수색해야 할 지 여자가 수색해야 할 지 고민하더군요.

the man or the woman.

I mean, I just came out to everyone watching this.

사실 저는 이 영상을 보는 모두에게 커밍아웃하고 있는 거죠.

When I came out to my dad,

제가 아버지에게 커밍아웃 할 때는

to my great relief, he was totally cool with me being trans,

다행스럽게도 아버지가 별 반응을 보이지 않았어요.

but as soon as I started talking about physically transitioning,

신체의 변이에 대해 얘기하니까

he freaked.

기겁을 하시긴 하셨지만요.

And I quickly realized it was because he, like so many other people,

아버지가 타인과 똑같은 반응을 할 때 깨달았습니다.

think that physical transition means just one thing:

아버지에게도 신체의 변이는 단 한 가지를 의미한다는 걸요.

the surgery.

수술이죠.

Now, listen,

잘 들어보세요.

if there were one magical surgery

만약 저를 하룻밤에 키 큰 근육질의 사회통념상 완벽한 남자로

that could turn me into a tall, muscular,

바꿔줄 수 있는 기적같은 수술이 있다면

societally perfect image of a man overnight,

I'd sign up in a heartbeat.

두 말 할 것 없이 할 거예요.

Unfortunately, it isn't that simple.

불행히도, 현실은 녹록치가 않습니다.

There are dozens of different gender-affirming surgeries

성별을 확정지어주는 수술은 수십개가 있습니다.

from chest surgeries to bottom surgeries

가슴 수술부터 사타구니 수술,

to facial feminization and man-sculpting.

여자같은 얼굴이나 남자같은 몸을 만들어주는 수술까지요.

Many trans people will only ever undergo one procedure in their lifetime, if that.

수술을 한 트랜스젠더들은 보통 평생동안,

단 한 번의 수술만을 합니다.

Maybe because they don't personally feel the need

아마 필요성을 느끼지 못 해서일 겁니다.

but also because they're expensive,

물론 수술이 비싸고

and health insurance is only beginning to cover them.

건강 보험이 수술을 보장해주기 어려운것도 이유죠.

Instead, the first step for a trans person seeking physical transition

그래서 트랜스젠더들이 보통 첫번째로 찾게 되는 신체 변이는

is usually hormone replacement therapy.

호르몬 치환 요법입니다.

Hormones are why I have a deeper voice and some sparse whiskers on my neck

호르몬은 제 저음과 드문드문한 목의 수염,

and a giant pimple on my chin.

턱에 큰 여드름이 나게 해주죠.

Basically, they put you through a second puberty ...

기본적으로 호르몬 때문에 2차 성징이 일어나게 되죠.

it's a blast.

완전 폭발적으로요.

(Laughter)

Now, because our transitions are slower and steadier

신체변이가 꾸준하지만 느리게 진행되기 때문에

than historic misconceptions can lead people to believe,

이전부터 전해져 내려오는 오해가 진실로 느껴지죠.

there can be some confusion

언제부터 새롭게 바뀐 이름과 대명사로 불러야 하는 지는

about when to call someone by their new name and pronouns.

논란이 있습니다.

There's no distinct point in physical transition

신체 변이 과정에서 진짜 성을 가지게 되는

at which a trans person becomes their true gender.

정확한 시점이 있는 건 아니거든요.

As soon as they tell you their new name and pronouns,

스스로 새로운 이름과 대명사를 알려줬을 때가

that's when you start using them.

여러분이 그런 단어들을 사용하기에 적합한 때일 겁니다.

It can be difficult to make the change.

바뀌는 게 힘들 수도 있어요.

You might slip up here and there;

여기저기서 실수를 할 수도 있어요.

I've slipped up myself with other trans people.

저 역시 다른 트랜스젠더에게 실수를 했습니다.

But I always think to myself,

그렇지만 항상 스스로 생각합니다.

if we can change from calling Puff Daddy to P. Diddy,

애완고양이 이름이 퍼프 대디에서 피 디디로 바뀌었을 때도

and if we apologize profusely when we've used the wrong gender pronoun

이름을 잘못불러서 사과를 한다면,

for someone's pet cat --

I mean, I think we can make the same effort

그런 노력을 함께 살아가는 사람에게도

for the real humans in our lives.

기울여 줄 수 있을 거라고 생각합니다.

Now, there is no topic that makes other people more awkward about trans people

트랜스젠더의 공중화장실 이용 문제만큼

더 민감한 주제가 있을까요?

than public bathrooms.

Ah, the bathrooms --

화장실은..

the latest political flash point for LGBT opponents.

성소수자를 반대하는 사람들이 최근에 주장하는 '정치적 화약고'죠.

Here's a fun fact about bathrooms:

화장실과 관련해서 재밌는 사실이 있어요.

more US congressmen have been convicted of assaulting someone in a public bathroom

트랜스젠더보다 화장실 성폭행을 더 많이 저지른 분은

than trans people have been.

바로 미국 국회의원이죠.

(Laughter)

The truth is we trans people are so much more scared of you than you are of us.

사람들이 트랜스젠더들을 무서워하는 것보다

트랜스젠더들이 사람들을 더 무서워합니다.

It's a huge point of discussion in trans communities

트랜스젠더들 사이에서도 어떤 화장실을 언제부터 사용하는 지는

about which bathroom to start using and when,

논란의 대상입니다.

so we don't attract attention that could lead to violence against us.

우리를 겨냥한 사건이 일어날 수 도 있는데

우리도 무서워서 못하죠.

I personally started using the men's room

저는 여자화장실에서 사람들이 저를 보고

when I started getting confused and frightened looks in the women's room,

당황하고 겁을 먹었을 때부터 남자화장실을 사용했습니다.

even though I was petrified to start going into the men's room.

제자신은 남자화장실을 가는 게 무서웠지만요.

And often we opt to just not go to the bathroom at all.

대개 트랜스젠더들은 화장실을 가지 않는걸 선택하죠.

A 2015 national survey of trans people

2015년의 트랜스젠더를 대상으로 한 설문조사에서

found that eight percent of us had had a urinary tract infection

8퍼센트가 화장실 가는 것을 참다가

in the past year

요로감염증을 앓아본 적이 있다고 대답했습니다.

as a result of avoiding restrooms.

These bathroom bills aren't protecting anyone.

화장실 법안은 그 누구도 보호해주지 못하고 있습니다.

All they're doing

오히려 트랜스젠더들이

is ensuring that when trans people are assaulted in bathrooms,

화장실에서 폭행과 추행을 당하게 하죠.

the law will no longer be on our side when we report it.

우리가 신고를 하면 법은 저희의 편을 들어주지 않습니다.

Being trans means a daily onslaught of these misconceptions.

트랜스젠더로 산다는 것은 이런 오해로 인한 습격을 일상처럼 받는다는 것을 뜻합니다.

And I have it pretty easy.

저한테는 나은 편이죠.

I am a white, able-bodied guy

저는 백인이고 신체가 건강한 남성입니다.

sitting nearly at the peak of privilege mountain.

특권 계층의 거의 꼭대기에 있죠.

For non-binary people,

비주류의 사람들이나

for trans women,

트랜스젠더 여성,

for trans people of color,

유색인종인 트랜스젠더에게는

it is so much harder.

훨씬 더 힘든 일일 겁니다.

So I've given you a starter pack of trans knowledge

그래서 제가 여러분에게 트랜스젠더에 관한 기초 지식을 알려드리려고 합니다.

that I hope will lead to more learning on your own.

Talk to trans people.

Take the heat off of us and educate those around you

so we don't have to every time.

우리가 항상 들어야 하는 비난에서 벗어나게 해 주세요.

Maybe someday, when I say,

그러면 언젠가,

제가 "안녕하세요, 저는 잭이고 트랜스젠더입니다."라고 말했을 때,

"Hi, I'm Jack, and I'm transgender,"

the only response I'll get is,

돌아오는 반응이

"Hi, nice to meet you."
