I grew up

we built an amazing jewelry business.

It was a fairy tale, and then we retired.

Then she took me to see a film

I have four kids,

저는 네 명의 아이들이 있습니다.

and even if part of what he says is true,

they're not going to have the life that I had.

And I decided at that moment

It's a tiny, little island --

60 miles by 90 miles.

It has an intact Hindu culture.

발리에는 힌두 문화가 그대로 보존되어 있습니다.

Cynthia and I were there.

아내와 전 발리에 갔죠.

We had had a wonderful life there,

우린 그곳에서 멋진 삶을 보내왔고요.

and we decided to do something unusual.

그래서 뭔가 특별한 것을 해보기로 했습니다.

We decided to give back

지역사회에 뭔가를 환원하고자 하는

locally.

결심이었죠.

And here it is: it's called the Green School.

그게 바로 이겁니다. 이건 '녹색 학교'라고 합니다.

I know it doesn't look like a school,

이곳이 학교처럼 보이지 않는다는 걸 잘 압니다.

but it is something we decided to do,

하지만 이게 바로 저희가 하기로 한 것이었죠.

and it is extremely,

그리고 이건 굉장히

extremely green.

매우 친환경적입니다.

The classrooms have no walls.

교실에는 벽이 없고

The teacher is writing on a bamboo blackboard.

선생님들은 대나무 칠판에 판서합니다.

The desks are not square.

책상은 사각형 모양이 아니고요.

At Green School, the children are smiling --

녹색 학교의 아이들은 항상 웃고 있습니다.

an unusual thing for school, especially for me.

학교에서 웃는 건 흔치 않은 일이죠. 특히 저 같은 사람한테는요.

And we practice holism.

그리고 우린 전인(全人)주의 교육을 합니다.

And for me it's just the idea

저에게 전인주의란 이런 겁니다.

that, if this little girl

이 작은 소녀가 전인적 생각을 하는

graduates as a whole person,

온전한 아이로 학교를 졸업하면

chances are

아마도 이 아이는

she'll demand a whole world --

온전한 세상,

a whole world --

정말 온전한 세상에서 살기를

to live on.

요구할 겁니다.

Our children spend 181 days

아이들은 상자같이 생긴 학교에서

going to school in a box.

181일을 보냅니다.

The people that built my school

그 학교를 지은 사람들은

also built the prison and the insane asylum

같은 재료로 감옥과 정신병원도

out of the same materials.

지었습니다.

So if this gentleman

had had a holistic education,

학교에서 전인교육을 받았다면

would he be sitting there?

저기에 앉아 있을까요?

Would he have had more possibilities in his life?

저분 인생에서 더 많은 가능성을 가졌으면 어땠을까요?

The classrooms have natural light.

학교 교실에는 자연채광이 들어옵니다.

They're beautiful. They're bamboo.

아름다운 교실이죠. 대나무로 만들어졌고요.

The breeze passes through them.

교실에는 산들바람이 들어옵니다.

And when the natural breeze isn't enough,

자연 바람이 충분하지 않을 땐

the kids deploy bubbles,

아이들은 돔을 설치합니다.

but not the kind of bubbles you know.

하지만 여러분이 아는 종류의 돔은 아닙니다.

These bubbles are made from natural cotton

이 돔은 천연 목화와 고무나무에서 나온

and rubber from the rubber tree.

고무로 만들어진 돔입니다.

So we basically turned the box

그래서 기본적으로 우리는 교실을

into a bubble.

상자에서 돔으로 바꾼 겁니다.

And these kids know

that painless climate control

may not be

자기들의 미래엔

part of their future.

없을지도 모른다는 걸 알고 있습니다.

We pay the bill at the end of the month,

우린 월말에 각종 세금을 내지만,

but the people that are really going to pay the bill

정말 그 대가를 치르는 사람은

are our grandchildren.

우리의 후손이 될 겁니다.

We have to teach the kids

우리는 아이들에게

that the world is not indestructible.

세상이 영원불멸의 곳이 아니라 걸 가르쳐야 합니다.

These kids did a little graffiti on their desks,

이 아이들은 책상에 약간의 그래피티를 했는데요.

and then they signed up for two extra courses.

그런 다음 아이들은 두 개의 특별 수업에 등록했죠.

The first one was called sanding

and the second one was called re-waxing.

But since that happened,

And this thing

is the second vortex to be built in the world,

in a two-and-a-half meter drop on a river.

When the turbine drops in,

There's nowhere to flush.

There isn't enough water.

These are compost toilets,

and nobody at the school wanted to know about them,

especially the principal.

And they work. People use them. People are okay.

It's something you should think about doing.

Not many things didn't work.

The beautiful canvas and rubber skylights

아름다운 캔버스와 고무 채광창은

got eaten by the sun in six months.

6개월 만에 햇빛에 삭아버렸죠.

We had to replace them with recyclable plastic.

우린 그걸 재활용 가능한 플라스틱으로 교체해야만 했습니다.

The teachers dragged giant PVC whiteboards

선생님들이 거대한 PVC 화이트보드를

into the classrooms.

교실 안으로 끌고 왔습니다.

So we had some good ideas:

그래서 좋은 생각이 있었죠.

we took old automobile windshields, put paper behind them

우린 자동차 전면유리를 갖고 와서 그 뒤에 종이를 붙이고

and created the first alternative

화이트보드에 대한 첫 번째 대안으로

to the whiteboard.

사용했습니다.

Green School sits in south-central Bali,

녹색 학교는 발리의 중남부 지역에 있는데

and it's on 20 acres

20에이커의 [1acre = 4046.8m²]

of rolling garden.

롤링 가든에 있습니다.

There's an amazing river traveling through it,

멋진 강이 그곳을 관통해서 흐르고 있고요.

and you can see there

how we manage to get across the river.

I met a father the other day; he looked a little crazed.

얼마 전에 학생 아버지 한 분을 뵈었는데 살짝 들뜨셨더군요.

I said, "Welcome to Green School."

"녹색 학교 오신 걸 환영합니다."라고 했더니

He said, "I've been on an airplane for 24 hours."

그분이 "비행기를 24시간 동안이나 탔습니다." 하시더군요.

I asked him, "Why?"

제가 "왜요?"라고 물었습니다.

He said, "I had a dream once about a green school,

그분은 "저는 한때 친환경 학교에 대한 꿈이 있었는데요,

and I saw a picture of this green school,

어느 날 녹색 학교에 대한 사진을 본 겁니다.

I got on an airplane.

그래서 비행기를 타게 됐죠.

In August I'm bringing my sons."

"8월에는 제 아이들을 데리고 오겠습니다."라고 하셨죠.

This was a great thing.

정말 멋진 일이었습니다.

But more than that,

하지만 그보다 더한 멋진 일이 있습니다.

people are building green houses around Green School,

사람들이 녹색 학교 근처에 친환경 주택을 짓고 있는 것이죠.

so their kids can walk to school on the paths.

그래서 아이들이 학교를 걸어 다닐 수 있도록 말입니다.

And people are bringing their green industries,

그리고 사람들은 친환경 사업을 들여오고 있죠.

hopefully their green restaurants,

친환경 음식점도

to the Green School.

녹색 학교 근처로 들어오면 좋겠고요.

It's becoming a community.

이곳은 공동체로 변하고 있습니다.

It's becoming a green model.

친환경적 모델이 되어 가는 겁니다.

We had to look at everything.

우리는 모든 걸 살펴봐야 했습니다.

No petrochemicals in the pavement.

도로에는 석유화학 물질이 없습니다.

No pavement.

아니, 아예 도로가 없죠.

These are volcanic stones laid by hand.

이건 수작업으로 깔아 놓은 화산암입니다.

There are no sidewalks.

인도는 없습니다.

The sidewalks are gravel. They flood when it rains,

인도는 자갈로 되어 있습니다. 비가 오면 물이 넘치기도 하지만

but they're green.

친환경적이죠.

This is the school buffalo.

이건 학교 버팔로 입니다.

He's planning to eat that fence for dinner.

이 버팔로는 저녁 식사로 담장을 먹으려고 하고 있군요.

All the fences at Green School are green.

녹색 학교의 모든 담장은 친환경입니다.

And when the kindergarten kids

최근에 유치원생 아이들이

recently moved their gate,

자기들 정문을 옮겼을 때

they found out the fence was made out of tapioca.

아이들은 그 담장이 타피오카로 만들어진 걸 알게 됐죠.

They took the tapioca roots up to the kitchen,

아이들은 타피오카 뿌리를 부엌으로 가져가서

sliced them thinly and made delicious chips.

얇게 썰어 맛있는 칩으로 만들었습니다.

Landscaping.

학교 조경은요.

We manage to keep the garden that was there

우리는 그곳에 원래 있던 정원을 활용했는데

running right up to the edge of each of the classrooms.

정원은 교실 가장자리까지 연결되어 있었죠.

We dropped them gently in.

우린 거기에 씨앗을 뿌려서 조경으로 활용했습니다.

We made space for these guys

발리에 있는 마지막 흑돼지를 위한

who are Bali's last black pigs.

공간도 마련해줬죠.

And the school cow

그리고 학교 소는

is trying to figure out

학교 운동장을 깎는

how to replace the lawnmower

잔디 깎는 기계를 어떻게 대체해야 하나

on the playing field.

고민하고 있군요.

These young ladies

이 꼬마 숙녀들은

are living in a rice culture,

벼 문화권에서 살고 있습니다.

but they know something that few people know in a rice culture.

하지만 이 아이들은 벼 문화권에 사는 사람들이 거의 모르는 것을 알죠.

They know how to plant organic rice,

아이들은 유기농 벼를 심을 줄 알고,

they know how to look after it,

어떻게 그걸 관리해야 하는지,

they know how to harvest and they know how to cook it.

어떻게 추수해야 하는지, 그리고 밥은 어떻게 해야 하는지 압니다.

They're part of the rice cycle

아이들은 벼농사 주기의 한 부분인 셈이죠.

and these skills will be valuable

그러한 지식은 아이들의 장래에

for them in their future.

소중한 것이 될 겁니다.

This young man is picking organic vegetables.

이 꼬마 신사는 유기농 야채를 수확 중이군요.

We feed 400 people lunch every day

우리는 매일 400명의 점심을 준비하는데요.

and it's not a normal lunch. There's no gas.

이건 일반적인 점심이 아닙니다. 가스는 쓰지 않습니다.

Local Balinese women

지역사회의 발리 여성들이

cook the food on sawdust burners

오직 그들의 할머니만이 알고 있을 비법을 이용해서

using secrets that only their grandmothers know.

톱밥 화로에서 음식을 조리하죠.

The food is incredible.

그 음식은 정말 훌륭합니다.

Green School is a place of pioneers,

녹색 학교는 지역과 세계에 있는

local and global.

개척자들의 공간입니다.

And it's a kind of microcosm

여긴 세계화된 세상 속에 있는

of the globalized world.

일종의 작은 세계입니다.

The kids are from 25 countries.

학생들은 전 세계의 25개 국가에서 왔습니다.

When I see them together,

그 아이들 모두를 보면

I know that they're working out

저는 아이들이 미래에 어떻게 살아야 하는가에

how to live in the future.

알아가고 있다는 걸 느낍니다.

Green School is going into its third year

녹색 학교는 이제 160명의 학생과 함께

with 160 children.

삼 년째에 접어들었습니다.

It's a school where you do learn reading --

이곳은 제가 좋아했던 읽기 수업과

one of my favorites --

제가 별로 못 했던

writing -- I was bad at it --

작문 수업, 그리고 산수를

arithmetic.

배우는 보통 학교입니다.

But you also learn other things.

하지만 또 다른 것도 배웁니다.

You learn bamboo building.

대나무 건물에 대해서도 배우고

You practice

고대 발리 예술도

ancient Balinese arts.

배웁니다.

This is called mud wrestling in the rice fields.

이것은 논에서 하는 진흙 레슬링이라고 합니다.

The kids love it.

아이들이 무척 좋아합니다.

The mothers aren't quite convinced.

어머니들은 잘 이해하지 못하시지만요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

We've done a lot of outrageous things in our lives,

우리는 정말 놀라운 일들을 해왔습니다.

and we said, okay, local, what does "local" mean?

그리고 우린 이젠 '지역사회'를 생각하게 된 거죠. 이게 무슨 의미냐면

Local means

우리가 생각하는 건

that 20 percent of the population of the school

우리 학교 학생 수의 20%는

has to be Balinese,

발리 아이들이어야 한다는 겁니다.

and this was a really big commitment.

이건 지역사회에 정말 큰 헌신이었습니다.

And we were right.

그리고 우리 결정은 옳았습니다.

And people are coming forward

전 세계 곳곳에서

from all over the world

발리 장학 기금을 지원하기 위해

to support the Balinese Scholarship Fund,

나서고 있습니다.

because these kids will be Bali's next green leaders.

왜냐하면 이 아이들이 발리의 차세대 환경 지도자가 될 것이니까요.

The teachers are as diverse

선생님 또한 학생 구성만큼이나

as the student body,

다양합니다.

and the amazing thing

그리고 놀라운 일은

is that volunteers are popping up.

여기저기서 자원봉사자가 온다는 겁니다.

A man came from Java

자바에서 오신 남자분은

with a new kind of organic agriculture.

새로운 종류의 유기농법을 전해줬고요.

A woman came from Africa with music.

아프리카에서 오신 여자분은 음악을 전해줬죠.

And together these volunteers and the teachers

이런 자원봉사자와 선생님들은 함께

are deeply committed

차세대 세계적 환경 지도자를

to creating a new generation

육성하기 위해 온 힘을 다해

of global, green leaders.

헌신하고 있습니다.

The Green School effect --

녹색 학교 효과라...

we don't know what it is.

우리는 그게 뭔지 모르겠습니다.

We need someone to come and study it.

여기 와서 그 효과를 연구해 줄 사람이 필요합니다.

But what's happening, our learning-different kids --

어떤 일이 벌어지고 있느냐면, 난독증이라는 다른 학습 방식을

dyslexic --

가진 아이들이

we've renamed them prolexic --

우린 난독(難讀)증 대신 애독(愛讀)증이라고 부르지만요.

are doing well in these beautiful, beautiful classrooms.

그 아이들은 이 아름다운 교실에서 너무나 잘 해나가고 있다는 거죠.

And all the kids are thriving.

모든 아이가 잘 커 나고 있습니다.

And how did we do all this?

그리고 우린 이걸 어떻게 했을까요?

On giant grass.

이건 엄청나게 넓은 잔디밭에

It's bamboo.

대나무입니다.

It comes out of the ground like a train.

대나무는 땅에서 힘차게 솟아 나오죠.

It grows as high as a coconut tree in two months

그리고 두 달 만에 코코넛 나무만큼 높이 자랍니다.

and three years later it can be harvested

3년 후에는 이런 건물을 짓기 위해

to build buildings like this.

수확 가능하죠.

It's as strong and dense as teak

대나무는 티크 나무만큼 단단하고 조밀합니다.

and it will hold up any roof.

어떤 지붕도 받쳐줄 수 있죠.

When the architects came, they brought us these things,

건축가들이 왔을 때 이걸 가져왔더군요.

and you've probably seen things like this.

여러분도 아마 이런 비슷한 걸 보셨을 겁니다.

The yellow box was called the administration complex.

모형에서 노란색 상자를 행정 복합 공간으로 부르더군요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

We squashed it, we rethought it,

우린 그 계획은 접어버리고 다시 생각했습니다.

but mainly we renamed it

사실 다시 이름을 붙인 것이죠.

"the heart of school,"

'학교의 심장'이라고 말입니다.

and that changed everything forever.

그것이 모든 걸 바꿔놓았습니다.

It's a double helix.

그것은 이중 나선 구조입니다.

It has administrators in it

이 안에는 행정실과

and many, many other things.

다른 여러 가지 것이 있습니다.

And the problem of building it --

그런데 그 건물을 지을 때 문제는

when the Balinese workers

발리 노동자들이

saw long reams of plans,

엄청나게 긴 계획서를 보면서

they looked at them and said, "What's this?"

"이게 뭐죠?"라고 한 것이었죠.

So we built big models.

그래서 우리는 큰 모델을 만들었습니다.

We had them engineered by the engineers.

엔지니어들이 건물을 설계했고요.

And Balinese carpenters like this

그리고 발리 목수는

measured them with their bamboo rulers,

대나무 자로 그 모델을 측정하고

selected the bamboo and built the buildings

적당한 대나무를 골라서 전통 방식을 이용한

using age-old techniques,

수작업으로 건물을

mostly by hand.

지었습니다.

It was chaos.

혼란 그 자체였죠.

And the Balinese carpenters want to be as modern as we do,

발리 목수들은 우리만큼이나 현대적입니다.

so they use metal scaffolding

그들은 금속 비계를 사용해서 (비계: 높은 곳의 공사를 돕는 임시 가설 설치물)

to build the bamboo building

대나무 건물을 짓습니다.

and when the scaffolding came down,

그리고 비계를 해체한 후에

we realized that we had a cathedral,

우리는 환경에 대한 성지,

a cathedral to green,

친환경 교육에 대한 성지를

and a cathedral to green education.

갖게 되었다는 걸 알게 되었죠.

The heart of school has seven kilometers

'학교의 심장'은 7km에 달하는

of bamboo in it.

From the time the foundations were finished,

기초공사가 끝나고 나서

in three months it had roofs and floors.

약 3개월 후에 지붕과 바닥 공사도 마무리되었죠.

It may not be the biggest bamboo building in the world,

세계에서 가장 큰 대나무 건물이 아닐 수도 있습니다만

but many people believe

많은 사람이 우리 학교를 세상에서

that it's the most beautiful.

가장 아름다운 대나무 건축물이라고 믿지요.

Is this doable in your community?

We believe it is.

우리는 그렇다고 믿습니다.

Green School is a model we built for the world.

녹색 학교는 세상을 위해 만든 모델이고

It's a model we built for Bali.

발리를 위해 만든 모델입니다.

And you just have to follow these simple, simple rules:

단지 이런 간단한 규칙을 따르기만 하면 됩니다.

be local,

지역사회와 함께할 것,

let the environment lead

and think about

how your grandchildren might build.
