So, I decided to embark on a quest.

and one of them is Wolfgang Puck's restaurant, Cut, in Los Angeles.

I went there, and I ordered the eight-ounce rib eye for 160 dollars.

제가 거기 가서 꽃등심 8온스를 160달러에 주문했습니다.

And it arrived, and it was tiny.

And I was outraged.

It was like, 160 dollars for this?

And then I took a bite,

and I wished that it was tinier, because Kobe beef is so rich.

It's like foie gras -- it's not even like steak.

I almost couldn't finish it.

I was really happy when I was done.

Now, the photographer who took the pictures for this project

Which, I guess, you know, communicates to you

One of the most expensive luxury foods by weight in the world.

To try this, I went to a Mario Batali restaurant

in Manhattan -- Del Posto.

The waiter, you know, came out with the white truffle knob

종업원이 흰 송로버섯과 그걸 깎는 도구를 가지고 와서

and his shaver, and he shaved it onto my pasta and he said, you know,

"Would Signore like the truffles?"

버섯을 깎아내더군요.

And the charm of white truffles is in their aroma.

흰 송로버섯의 매력은 특유의 향에 있었습니다.

It's not in their taste, really. It's not in their texture.

It's in the smell.

These white pearlescent flakes hit the noodles,

this haunting, wonderful, nutty, mushroomy smell wafted up.

10 seconds passed and it was gone.

And then I was left with these little ugly flakes on my pasta that,

you know, their purpose had been served,

and so I'm afraid to say that this was also a disappointment to me.

This is soap that's made from silver nanoparticles,

I washed my face with this this morning in preparation for this.

And it, you know, tickled a little bit and it smelled good,

That said, a lot of work goes into these.

Armando Manni is a former filmmaker who makes this olive oil

전 영화감독인 아르만도 마니씨는

from an olive that grows on a single slope in Tuscany.

토스카나의 한 경사지에서 자라는 올리브로 이 올리브유를 만듭니다.

And he goes to great lengths to protect the olive oil from oxygen and light.

He uses tiny bottles, the glass is tinted,

he tops the olive oil off with an inert gas.

I did a blind taste test of this with 20 people and five other olive oils.

It tasted fine. It tasted interesting.

It was very green, it was very peppery.

But in the blind taste test, it came in last.

The olive oil that came in first was actually a bottle of

A recurring theme is that a lot of these things are from Japan --

This is a coffee made from a very unusual process.

Japan is doing crazy things with toilets.

There's one that actually analyzes the contents of the bowl

그런 귀한 와인을 내줄 사람은 없었습니다.

So, I'd about given up trying to get my hands on one of these.

그래서 전 포기 직전의 상태에 있었습니다.

I'd put out feelers to retailers, to auctioneers,

소매업자들과 경매업자들을 떠보았지만

and it was coming up empty.

아무런 소득이 없는 상태였죠.

And then I got an email from a guy named Bipin Desai.

그러다가 어느 날 비핀 드자이라는 분으로부터 이메일을 받았습니다.

Bipin Desai is a U.C. Riverside theoretical physicist

비핀 아지이는 UC 리버사이드(미국 대학교)의 이론 물리학자이면서

who also happens to be the preeminent organizer of rare wine tastings,

희귀 와인을 맛보는 행사의 주최자이기도 했죠.

and he said, "I've got a tasting coming up

그는 47년산 슈발 블랑을 맛볼 수 있는

where we're going to serve the '47 Cheval Blanc."

와인 시음회가 있다고 말했습니다.

And it was going to be a double vertical --

2단 수직형으로 진행된다고 하더군요.

it was going to be 30 vintages of Cheval Blanc,

슈발 블랑 30종류와 디켐 30종류를

and 30 vintages of Yquem.

맛본다고 했습니다.

And it was an invitation you do not refuse.

한마디로 거절하면 안되는 초대였죠.

I went.

그래서 저는 갔습니다.

It was three days, four meals.

3일에 거쳐 네 끼의 식사가 있었습니다.

And at lunch on Saturday, we opened the '47.

그리고 토요일 점심식사 때 47년산을 슈발 블랑을 개봉했습니다.

And you know, it had this fragrant softness,

부드러운 향기가 나면서 동시에

and it smelled a little bit of linseed oil.

약간의 아마인유 냄새가 나더군요.

And then I tasted it, and it,

맛을 봤습니다.

you know, had this kind of unctuous, porty richness,

달콤하고, 풍부하고, 점성이 강했습니다.

which is characteristic of that wine --

그건 슈발 블랑의 특성이기도 하죠.

that it sort of resembles port in a lot of ways.

그런 면에서 포루투갈산 와인과 꽤 비슷했습니다.

There were people at my table who thought it was, you know, fantastic.

많은 사람들이 47년산 슈발 블랑의 맛이 환상적이라고 생각했습니다.

There were some people who were a little less impressed.

반면 별로 감동을 받지 못한 분들도 몇 명 있었습니다.

And I wasn't that impressed.

저도 그 와인이 그렇게 인상적이진 않았습니다.

And I don't -- call my palate a philistine palate --

전 맛에 있어서 비평가는 아니기 때문에

so it doesn't necessarily mean something that I wasn't impressed,

제가 감동 받지 않았다는 것에 뭔가 깊은 의미가 있는 것은 아닙니다.

but I was not the only one there who had that reaction.

하지만 저 같은 반응을 보인 사람이 저 혼자는 아니었습니다.

And it wasn't just to that wine.

또 그 이유가 단지 그 와인 때문은 아니었습니다.

Any one of the wines served at this tasting,

아마 일상의 저녁 파티에서

if I'd been served it at a dinner party, it would have been, you know,

47년산 슈발 블랑이 나왔다면 아마

the wine experience of my lifetime, and incredibly memorable.

제 인생에 있어서 잊지 못할 맛을 느꼈을 것입니다.

But drinking 60 great wines over three days,

하지만 60개의 와인들을 3일에 거쳐 계속 마시면

they all just blurred together,

아무리 품질이 좋은

and it became almost a grueling experience.

와인이라 하더라도 사람을 거의 녹초로 만들어 버립니다.

And I just wanted to finish by mentioning a very interesting study

올해 초 스탠포드와 칼텍의 연구원들이 발표한 아주 흥미로운 연구를

which came out earlier this year from some researchers at Stanford and Caltech.

소개하면서 이 강연을 마치고 싶습니다.

And they gave subjects the same wine,

그들은 내용물은 똑같지만 다른 가격표가 달린

labeled with different price tags.

와인을 사람들에게 줬습니다.

A lot of people, you know,

그 결과 많은 사람들이

said that they liked the more expensive wine more --

비싼 와인이 더 좋다고 말했습니다.

it was the same wine, but they thought it was a different one

사실은 같은 와인이지만 사람들은 가격이 더 비싼,

that was more expensive.

다른 종류의 와인라고 생각을 한 것이죠.

But what was unexpected was that these researchers did

놀라웠던 것은 와인을 마시는 순간에

MRI brain imaging while the people were drinking the wine,

사람들의 뇌 사진을 MRI로 찍었는데

and not only did they say they enjoyed the more expensively labeled wine more --

사람들이 비싼 와인을 선호한다고 말했을 경우 실제로 뇌도

their brain actually registered as experiencing more pleasure

같은 반응을 보였다는 것입니다. 같은 와인인데도 더 비싼 가격표를 보고

from the same wine when it was labeled with a higher price tag.

뇌가 더 큰 만족감을 느꼈다는거죠.
