Good evening – or, good morning, I am not sure what time it is there.

Regardless of the hour, I am thrilled to be participating in your conference.

I very much like its title – "The Future You" –

미래를 바라보면서 현재의 우리를 대화로 초대하니까요.

because, while looking at tomorrow, it invites us to open a dialogue today,

"당신"을 통해 미래를 보는 거죠.

to look at the future through a "you."

여러분들로 미래가 만들어지고 그 만남들로 미래가 이루어집니다.

"The Future You:"

the future is made of yous, it is made of encounters,

인생은 서로의 관계를 통해 흘러가니까요.

because life flows through our relations with others.

저의 신념은 인생의 수많은 시간을 지나며 강해졌습니다.

Quite a few years of life

모든 사람의 존재는 다른 사람과 깊이 연결되어 있다는 신념 말입니다.

have strengthened my conviction

that each and everyone's existence is deeply tied to that of others:

인생이란 그저 시간이 지나가는 게 아니라 관계를 경험하는 것입니다.

life is not time merely passing by, life is about interactions.

저는 사람을 만나면서 아픈 사람의 이야기를 들어주고

As I meet, or lend an ear to those who are sick,

더 나은 미래를 찾으며 엄청난 고생을 겪는

to the migrants who face terrible hardships

이주자들의 이야기에 귀를 기울이고

마음 속에 끔찍한 고통을 안고 있는 수감자의 이야기를 듣고

in search of a brighter future,

to prison inmates who carry a hell of pain inside their hearts,

일자리를 구하지 못하는 많은 젊은이들의 이야기를 들으며

and to those, many of them young, who cannot find a job,

저는 자주 궁금해합니다.

I often find myself wondering:

"어째서 내가 아니라 저들이어야 할까?"

"Why them and not me?"

저도 이주자의 가정에서 태어났습니다.

I, myself, was born in a family of migrants;

다른 많은 이탈리아인들처럼 저의 아버지, 조부모님도

my father, my grandparents, like many other Italians,

아르헨티나를 향해 떠나며

아무것도 가진 것이 없는 어려운 삶을 겪었습니다.

left for Argentina

and met the fate of those who are left with nothing.

저 역시 오늘날 "폐기된" 사람들 중 하나가 됐을 수 있었습니다.

I could have very well ended up among today's "discarded" people.

그렇기에 저는 스스로에게 마음 속 깊이 항상 자문합니다.

And that's why I always ask myself, deep in my heart:

"어째서 내가 아니라 저들이어야 하는가?"

"Why them and not me?"

가장 먼저는, 이 모임이 우리 모두에게

First and foremost, I would love it if this meeting could help to remind us

우리는 서로 필요한 사람들임을 기억하게 해 줬으면 좋겠습니다.

that we all need each other,

그 누구도 섬처럼 혼자가 아닙니다.

none of us is an island,

다른 사람들과 별개로 독립적인 "나"가 아니예요.

an autonomous and independent "I," separated from the other,

소외되는 자 없이, 모두가 함께 서야만 미래를 세울 수 있습니다.

and we can only build the future by standing together, including everyone.

우리가 자주 생각하는 건 아니지만 모든 것은 연결되어 있습니다.

We don’t think about it often, but everything is connected,

그리고 우리는 서로의 관계를 건강한 상태로 회복해야 합니다.

and we need to restore our connections to a healthy state.

심지어 저의 형제 자매에게 하는

Even the harsh judgment I hold in my heart

가혹한 비판과

치유되지 못한 심한 상처, 용서받지 못한 범죄

against my brother or my sister,

the open wound that was never cured, the offense that was never forgiven,

저만 다치게 하는 증오심은

제 안에 있는 싸움의 예입니다.

the rancor that is only going to hurt me,

are all instances of a fight that I carry within me,

a flare deep in my heart that needs to be extinguished

before it goes up in flames, leaving only ashes behind.

요즘 우리들은

행복한 미래가 불가능하다고 생각하는 것 같습니다.

Many of us, nowadays,

seem to believe that a happy future is something impossible to achieve.

그런 걱정은 진지하게 생각해야 하지만

While such concerns must be taken very seriously,

행복한 미래는 불가능한 게 아닙니다.

바깥 세상으로 통하는 문을 잠그지 않으면 극복할 수 있습니다.

they are not invincible.

They can be overcome when we don't lock our door to the outside world.

행복이란 오직

Happiness can only be discovered

전체와 단일한 구성 요소의 조화에서 발견됩니다.

as a gift of harmony between the whole and each single component.

여러분이 저보다 잘 아시겠지만

Even science – and you know it better than I do –

심지어 과학도 현실을 이해하도록 보여줍니다.

points to an understanding of reality

현실이란 모든 요소가 소통하고 서로 상호작용하는 곳이라고요.

as a place where every element connects and interacts with everything else.

이제 두 번째 메시지입니다.

And this brings me to my second message.

얼마나 놀라울지 생각해 보세요.

과학과 기술 혁신의 성장이

How wonderful would it be

if the growth of scientific and technological innovation

보다 평등하고 사회적으로 포용하는 것과 함께 한다면요.

would come along with more equality and social inclusion.

먼 행성을 발견하면서도

How wonderful would it be, while we discover faraway planets,

우리 주위를 맴도는 형제 자매들의 필요를 발견한다면 얼마나 멋질까요.

to rediscover the needs of the brothers and sisters orbiting around us.

아름답지만 때로 불편한 말인

결속과 연대가

How wonderful would it be if solidarity,

this beautiful and, at times, inconvenient word,

그저 사회 사업에만 국한되지 않고

were not simply reduced to social work,

개인과 민족, 국가의 관계 뿐만 아니라

and became, instead, the default attitude

정치, 경제, 과학적 선택에 기본적인 태도가 된다면

in political, economic and scientific choices,

얼마나 훌륭할까요.

as well as in the relationships among individuals, peoples and countries.

사람들에게 진정한 연대를 교육시키는 것만이

Only by educating people to a true solidarity

우리로 하여금 "쓰레기 문화"를 극복하게 할 것입니다.

will we be able to overcome

the "culture of waste,"

이 "쓰레기 문화"는 단순히 음식이나 물건만이 아니라

which doesn't concern only food and goods

가장 먼저는 사람을 가리킵니다.

우리의 기술-경제 체계에서 소외된 사람으로

but, first and foremost, the people

who are cast aside by our techno-economic systems

사람이 아니라 제품을 앞세우는 사회에서

which, without even realizing it,

우리가 인지하지도 못하면서 소외되고 있는 사람이죠.

are now putting products at their core, instead of people.

많은 이들이 결속이라는 단어를 사전에서 지웠으면 하고 바라죠.

Solidarity is a term that many wish to erase from the dictionary.

그러나 결속은 자동적인 구조가 아닙니다.

Solidarity, however, is not an automatic mechanism.

프로그램으로 짜거나 통제할 수 있는 것이 아닙니다.

결속은 모든 사람의 마음 속에서 우러나는 자발적인 반응입니다.

It cannot be programmed or controlled.

It is a free response born from the heart of each and everyone.

그렇습니다, 자발적인 반응입니다!

Yes, a free response!

아무리 많은 모순 가운데 있어도 삶은 선물이라는 것을 알고

When one realizes

that life, even in the middle of so many contradictions, is a gift,

사랑이 삶의 원천이자 의미임을 안다면

that love is the source and the meaning of life,

다른 사람에게 선한 일을 할 마음을 어떻게 억누를 수 있겠습니까?

how can they withhold their urge to do good to another fellow being?

선한 일을 하려면

추억, 용기와 창의성이 있어야 합니다.

In order to do good,

we need memory, we need courage and we need creativity.

TED에는 많은 창의적인 사람들이 모인다는 걸 알아요.

And I know that TED gathers many creative minds.

사랑은 창조적이고, 구체적이며

Yes, love does require a creative, concrete

독창적인 태도를 필요로 합니다.

많은 경우 우리의 양심을 무디게 하는

and ingenious attitude.

Good intentions and conventional formulas,

선한 의도와 전통적인 방법으로는 충분치 않습니다.

so often used to appease our conscience, are not enough.

모두 다 함께 서로 도와서

Let us help each other, all together, to remember

다른 사람이 통계치나 숫자에 불과한 것이 아님을 기억하도록 합시다.

that the other is not a statistic or a number.

다른 사람도 모두 얼굴이 있어요.

"당신"이란 존재는 언제나 실존합니다.

The other has a face.

The "you" is always a real presence,

관심을 가져야 할 사람이죠.

a person to take care of.

예수님이 말씀하신 비유가 있습니다.

There is a parable Jesus told to help us understand the difference

굳이 남을 돕지 않으려는 사람과 남을 돌보는 사람을 비교한 비유죠.

between those who'd rather not be bothered and those who take care of the other.

선한 사마리아인이라는 비유를 들어보셨을텐데요.

I am sure you have heard it before. It is the Parable of the Good Samaritan.

예수께서 물으셨습니다. "누가 나의 이웃이냐?"

When Jesus was asked: "Who is my neighbor?" -

즉, "누구를 돌봐줘야 하느냐?"

namely, "Who should I take care of?" -

예수께서 이런 이야기를 하셨습니다.

he told this story, the story of a man

어떤 남자가 습격받아 강도질과 폭행을 당해 길바닥에 버려졌습니다.

who had been assaulted, robbed, beaten and abandoned along a dirt road.

그 당시 매우 영향력 있던 제사장과 레위인이 그를 보고서

Upon seeing him, a priest and a Levite, two very influential people of the time,

도와주지도 않고 그냥 지나가버렸습니다.

walked past him without stopping to help.

잠시 후, 그 당시 매우 멸시받는 민족이었던 사마리아인이 지나갔습니다.

After a while, a Samaritan, a very much despised ethnicity at the time, walked by.

사마리아인은 다친 사람이 땅바닥에 쓰러져 있는 걸 보고는

Seeing the injured man lying on the ground,

거기 없는 사람인 것처럼 그냥 무시하지 않고

he did not ignore him as if he weren't even there.

그 사람을 불쌍히 여깁니다.

Instead, he felt compassion for this man,

그래서 매우 확실한 행동을 하게 됩니다.

which compelled him to act in a very concrete manner.

가엾은 남자의 상처에 기름과 포도주를 부어주고

He poured oil and wine on the wounds of the helpless man,

여관에 데려가서

그를 돌봐주도록 자기 돈을 내줬습니다.

brought him to a hostel

and paid out of his pocket for him to be assisted.

선한 사마리아인의 이야기는 오늘날 인류애에 관한 이야기입니다.

The story of the Good Samaritan is the story of today’s humanity.

모든 것이 사람이 아닌 돈과 물질에 집중되어 있기에

People's paths are riddled with suffering,

사람들의 길은 상처로 얽혀있습니다.

as everything is centered around money, and things, instead of people.

실제로 많은 경우 자신을 "고상하다"고 표현하는 사람들이

And often there is this habit, by people who call themselves "respectable,"

다른 이들을 돌보지 않는 습관을 가지고

수천 명 또는 전 인류를 길에 버려두고 있습니다.

of not taking care of the others,

thus leaving behind thousands of human beings, or entire populations,

on the side of the road.

다행히도 새로운 세상을 만드는 사람들이 있는데

Fortunately, there are also those who are creating a new world

그들은 자기 돈을 써가면까지 다른 사람들을 돌봅니다.

by taking care of the other, even out of their own pockets.

테레사 수녀가 말했습니다.

Mother Teresa actually said:

"자기 희생을 치르지 않고서는 사랑할 수 없다."

"One cannot love, unless it is at their own expense."

우리는 할 일이 너무 많고 이 일들을 다함께 해야 합니다.

We have so much to do, and we must do it together.

그러나 매일 마주치는 악함 속에서 우리는 어떻게 이 일을 할 수 있을까요?

But how can we do that with all the evil we breathe every day?

어떤 시스템도 선한 마음을 향한

소망과 동정, 악함에 대항하는 우리 능력을 막을 수 없게 만든

Thank God,

no system can nullify our desire to open up to the good,

신께 감사합니다.

to compassion and to our capacity to react against evil,

이 모든 것은 우리 마음 속 깊은 곳에서 나옵니다.

여러분께서 이런 말씀을 하시겠지요.

all of which stem from deep within our hearts.

"맞아요, 모두 아름다운 말이에요.

하지만 저는 선한 사마리아인도 캘커타의 테레사 수녀도 아니예요."

Now you might tell me,

"Sure, these are beautiful words,

but I am not the Good Samaritan, nor Mother Teresa of Calcutta."

그러나 오히려 반대로 우리는 각자 모두 소중합니다.

On the contrary: we are precious, each and every one of us.

우리 모두는 신이 보시기에 대체할 수 없는 소중한 존재입니다.

Each and every one of us is irreplaceable in the eyes of God.

오늘날 혼란의 암흑을 통과하여

Through the darkness of today's conflicts,

우리 모두는 밝은 촛불이 될 수 있습니다.

each and every one of us can become a bright candle,

빛이 어둠을 이기며

a reminder that light will overcome darkness,

그 반대가 절대 아닙니다.

and never the other way around.

기독교인들에게는 미래가 이름을 갖고 있습니다.

To Christians, the future does have a name,

그 이름은 "소망"입니다.

and its name is Hope.

희망을 갖는다고 해서 그저 순진하게 낙관하고

Feeling hopeful does not mean to be optimistically naïve

인류가 맞고 있는 비극을 무시하는 게 아닙니다.

and ignore the tragedy humanity is facing.

소망이란 마음의 미덕이며

어둠에 묶어두지 않고, 과거에 얽매이지 않으며

Hope is the virtue of a heart

that doesn't lock itself into darkness, that doesn't dwell on the past,

현재를 살아갈 뿐만 아니라 미래를 볼 줄 알게 합니다.

does not simply get by in the present, but is able to see a tomorrow.

소망은 미래를 여는 문입니다.

소망은 겸허한 삶의 숨은 씨앗이며

Hope is the door that opens onto the future.

Hope is a humble, hidden seed of life

시간이 갈수록 큰 나무로 자라납니다.

that, with time, will develop into a large tree.

보이지 않는 누룩이 반죽을 부풀게 하듯이

It is like some invisible yeast that allows the whole dough to grow,

소망이란 모든 삶에 향미를 더합니다.

that brings flavor to all aspects of life.

그리고 소망은 많은 일을 할 수 있습니다.

희망을 키우는 작은 불꽃 하나가

And it can do so much,

because a tiny flicker of light that feeds on hope

충분히 어둠의 장막을 깨뜨리기 때문입니다.

is enough to shatter the shield of darkness.

단 한 사람만 있어도 희망은 존재합니다.

A single individual is enough for hope to exist,

그리고 그 한 사람이 당신일 수 있습니다.

and that individual can be you.

그럼 또 다른 "당신", 다른 "당신"이 생기고

And then there will be another "you," and another "you,"

그것이 "우리"가 되는 겁니다.

"우리"가 되면 소망이 시작될까요?

and it turns into an "us."

And so, does hope begin when we have an "us?"

아니요.

소망이란 하나의 "당신"으로 시작합니다.

No.

"우리"가 있으면 혁명이 시작됩니다.

Hope began with one "you."

When there is an "us," there begins a revolution.

오늘 드릴 세 번째 말씀은 혁명에 관한 것입니다

The third message I would like to share today

온유함의 혁명이죠.

is, indeed, about revolution: the revolution of tenderness.

온유함이란 무엇일까요?

가까이 다가와 실제가 되는 사랑입니다.

And what is tenderness?

It is the love that comes close and becomes real.

우리의 마음으로부터 시작하여

눈, 귀, 손으로 전해지는 움직임입니다.

It is a movement that starts from our heart

and reaches the eyes, the ears and the hands.

온유함이란 우리 눈을 다른 이를 보는데 쓰고

Tenderness means to use our eyes to see the other,

귀를 다른 이의 말을 듣는데 쓰고

아이들, 가난한 자, 미래를 두려워하는 사람들의 말을 듣는 것입니다.

our ears to hear the other,

to listen to the children, the poor, those who are afraid of the future.

평범한 사람들과

병들고 오염된 지구의 조용한 외침도 듣는 것입니다.

To listen also to the silent cry of our common home,

온유함이란 우리의 손과 마음을

of our sick and polluted earth.

Tenderness means to use our hands and our heart

다른 이를 위로하는 데 쓰는 겁니다.

어려움에 처한 사람을 돕는 겁니다.

to comfort the other,

온유함이란 어린 아이들과

to take care of those in need.

Tenderness is the language of the young children,

다른 사람이 필요한 사람들의 언어입니다.

of those who need the other.

엄마, 아빠를 향한 아이의 사랑은

A child’s love for mom and dad

부모의 쓰다듬기, 바라보기, 목소리, 부드러움을 통해 자랍니다.

grows through their touch, their gaze, their voice, their tenderness.

부모님이 어린 아이에게 맞추어

이야기해 줄 때 저는 좋습니다.

I like when I hear parents

talk to their babies, adapting to the little child,

눈높이를 맞추어 공감하는 것이죠.

sharing the same level of communication.

이것이 온유함입니다. 다른 이와 같은 눈높이에 있는 것이죠.

This is tenderness: being on the same level as the other.

신은 우리의 수준에 맞추시기 위해 스스로 예수님으로 오셨습니다.

God himself descended into Jesus to be on our level.

선한 사마리아인도 똑같이 행동했습니다.

This is the same path the Good Samaritan took.

예수님 자신도 똑같이 하셨습니다.

This is the path that Jesus himself took.

그는 자신을 낮추어

온전한 인간으로 살며

He lowered himself,

실제적이고 구체적인 사랑의 언어를 실천하셨습니다.

he lived his entire human existence

practicing the real, concrete language of love.

그렇습니다, 온유함이란

가장 강하고, 용감한 사람이 택하는 선택의 길입니다.

Yes, tenderness is the path of choice

for the strongest, most courageous men and women.

온유함이란 약함이 아니라 꿋꿋한 인내입니다.

Tenderness is not weakness; it is fortitude.

결속의 방법이며, 인류애의 방식입니다.

It is the path of solidarity, the path of humility.

분명하고 크게 말씀드리겠습니다.

여러분이 힘이 있을수록

Please, allow me to say it loud and clear:

여러분의 행동이 사람들에게 영향력이 있을수록

the more powerful you are,

the more your actions will have an impact on people,

여러분은 더욱 겸허하게 행동할 책임이 있습니다.

the more responsible you are to act humbly.

그렇지 않으면, 그 힘이 여러분을 망치고 여러분은 다른 사람을 망칠 겁니다.

If you don’t, your power will ruin you, and you will ruin the other.

아르헨티나에 이런 말이 있습니다.

There is a saying in Argentina:

"힘이란 빈 속에 술을 마시는 것과 같다."

"Power is like drinking gin on an empty stomach."

여러분의 힘을 겸손과 온유함과 연결시키지 않으면

You feel dizzy, you get drunk, you lose your balance,

결국 어지럽고, 취해서 균형을 잃어

and you will end up hurting yourself and those around you,

자신과 주변의 사람들을 다치게 하는 것이죠.

if you don’t connect your power with humility and tenderness.

그러나 겸손함과 구체적인 사랑이 있을 때

Through humility and concrete love, on the other hand,

가장 높고 강한 힘은 선을 위한 봉사와 힘이 됩니다.

power – the highest, the strongest one – becomes a service, a force for good.

인류의 미래는 정치인들이나

The future of humankind isn't exclusively in the hands of politicians,

훌륭한 지도자, 거대 기업의 손에 있지 않습니다.

of great leaders, of big companies.

네, 그들은 엄청난 책임을 갖고 있습니다.

하지만 무엇보다도, 미래는

Yes, they do hold an enormous responsibility.

But the future is, most of all, in the hands of those people

who recognize the other as a "you"

and themselves as part of an "us."
