public spaces in America.

But to anyone who hasn't visited,

these images can't really fully convey.

큰 감흥이 일어나지 않을 겁니다.

To really understand Central Park,

센트럴 파크를 제대로 이해하려면

you have to physically be there.

직접 가 봐야 합니다.

Well, the same is true of the music,

지금 이 음악도 마찬가지입니다.

which my brother and I composed and mapped

이 음악은 특별히 센트럴 파크만을 위해

specifically for Central Park.

I'd like to talk to you today a little bit about the work

저는 오늘 저와 제 동생 헤이즈가 하는

that my brother Hays and I are doing --

That's us there. That's both of us actually —

specifically about a concept that we've been developing over the last few years,

특히 저희가 지난 몇 년 동안 연구해 온 한 개념에 대해 말씀드리려고 합니다.

this idea of location-aware music.

바로 '장소 기반 음악' 이라는 것입니다.

Now, my brother and I, we're musicians

동생과 저는 음악가이자,

and music producers.

음반 제작가이기도 하죠.

We've been working together since,

저희는 꼬맹이 시절부터

well, since we were kids, really.

같이 작업하고 있습니다.

But recently, we've become more and more interested

in projects where art

and technology intersect,

from creating sight-specific audio

and video installation

to engineering interactive concerts.

But today I want to focus on this concept

But before I go too much further into that,

let me tell you a little bit about how we got started

with this idea.

My brother and I were living in New York City

when the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude

크리스토와 잔 클로드의

did their temporary installation, The Gates,

in Central Park.

센트럴 파크에서 열렸습니다.

Hundreds of these brightly-colored sculptures

화려한 색상의 구조물 수백 개가

decorated the park for a number of weeks,

몇 주 동안 공원을 장식했습니다.

and unlike work that's exhibited

그리고 이 작품들은 일반적인 장소에 전시되는

in a more neutral space,

like on the walls of a gallery or a museum,

this was work that was really in dialogue

with this place,

and in a lot of ways, The Gates

This was an experience that stayed with us

for a long time, and years later,

my brother and I moved back to Washington, D.C.,

동생과 저는 워싱턴으로 돌아갔고

and we started to ask the question,

would it be possible,

in the same way that The Gates

responded to the physical layout of the park,

to compose music for a landscape?

음악도 그렇게 만들 수 없을까?

Which brought us to this.

그 답이 바로 저희를 이것으로 이끌었습니다.

On Memorial Day, we released "The National Mall,"

저희가 독립 기념일에 발매한 '내셔널 몰'이란

a location-aware album

장소 기반 앨범입니다.

released exclusively as a mobile app

모바일 전용 어플로

that uses the device's built-in GPS functionality

기기에 내장된 GPS 기능을 이용해

to sonically map the entire park

'내셔널 몰' 전체를

in our hometown of Washington, D.C.

음악으로 표현한 것입니다.

Hundreds of musical segments

수백 가지의 연주들이

are geo-tagged throughout the entire park

공원의 각 구역에 설정되어

so that as a listener traverses the landscape,

사용자가 해당 장소를 지나면

a musical score is actually unfolding around them.

음악이 흘러나오게 됩니다.

So this is not a playlist or a list of songs

공원과 어울리는 곡을 선정하여

intended for the park,

들려주는 것이 아니라

but rather an array of distinct melodies and rhythms

특정한 멜로디와 박자의 연주가

that fit together like pieces of a puzzle

하나의 퍼즐처럼 어울어져

and blend seamlessly

끊임없이 연주되는 것입니다.

based on a listener's chosen trajectory.

경로에 따라 연주가 변하죠.

So think of this as

달리 말하면 앨범의 수록곡을

a choose-your-own-adventure of an album.

스스로 만들 수 있는 겁니다.

Let's take a closer look.

좀 더 자세히 살펴보죠.

Let's look at one example here.

예를 하나 보여 드리겠습니다.

So using the app,

어플을 작동시키고

as you make your way towards the grounds

'워싱턴 기념탑'을 향해

surrounding the Washington Monument,

걸어가 보겠습니다.

you hear the sounds of instruments warming up,

악기들이 준비하는 소리가 들리시죠?

which then gives way to the sound of a mellotron

연이어 전자 건반 소리가 나옵니다.

spelling out a very simple melody.

아주 단순한 멜로디예요.

This is then joined by the sound of sweeping violins.

그 뒤로 바이올린 합주가 이어집니다.

Keep walking, and a full choir joins in,

계속 걸어가면, 합창단이 등장합니다.

until you finally reach the top of the hill

그리고 언덕 꼭대기에 도착하면

and you're hearing the sound of drums and fireworks

드럼 연주와 불꽃놀이 소리가 들리면서

and all sorts of musical craziness,

온갖 연주 소리가 울려 퍼집니다.

as if all of these sounds are radiating out

마치 이 모든 연주가 공원 중앙에 있는

from this giant obelisk that punctuates

거대한 오벨리스크에서

the center of the park.

But were you to walk in the opposite direction,

여기에서 반대로 걸어 내려오면

this entire sequence happens in reverse.

And were you to actually exit the perimeter of the park,

공원을 벗어나 밖으로 나오면

the music would fade to silence,

귓가에는 어느새 침묵이 흐르고

and the play button would disappear.

재생 버튼도 사라지죠.

We're sometimes contacted by people in other parts of the world

다른 나라에서 연락을 주시는 분들도 계신데요.

who can't travel to the United States,

미국에 올 수는 없지만

but would like to hear this record.

이 앨범을 듣고 싶어하는 분들이죠.

Well, unlike a normal album,

하지만 일반 앨범과 다르다 보니

we haven't been able to accommodate this request.

요청을 들어드릴 수 없는 실정입니다.

When they ask for a C.D. or an MP3 version,

CD나 MP3파일을 달라고 하시는데

we just can't make that happen,

생산 자체를 할 수 없습니다.

and the reason is because

이유를 설명하자면

this isn't a promotional app

이건 홍보용 어플도 아니고

or a game to promote or accompany

게임 어플에 딸려 나오는

the release of a traditional record.

그런 앨범이 아닙니다.

In this case, the app is the work itself,

어플 자체가 하나의 앨범이고

and the architecture of the landscape

특정 장소에 가야

is intrinsic to the listening experience.

연주를 들을 수 있기 때문이죠.

Six months later, we did a location-aware album

그로부터 6개월 뒤 저희는 센트럴 파크의

for Central Park,

위치 인식 앨범을 제작했습니다.

a park that is over two times the size of the National Mall,

내셔널 몰 보다 두 배나 큰 공원으로

with music spanning from the Sheep's Meadow

'양들의 초원'부터 연주가 시작되어

to the Ramble to the Reservoir.

'램블'이나 '저수지'까지 계속됩니다.

Currently, my brother and I are working on

지금 저희 형제는

projects all over the country,

전국에 걸쳐 작업 중입니다.

but last spring we started a project,

here actually at Stanford's

Experimental Media Art Department,

where we're creating our largest location-aware album to date,

one that will span the entirety of Highway 1

태평양 해안을 아우르는

here on the Pacific Coast.

But what we're doing, integrating GPS with music,

is really just one idea.

But it speaks to a larger vision

for a music industry that's sometimes struggled

to find its footing in this digital age,

that they begin to see these new technologies

최첨단 기술을 선사한 겁니다.

not simply as ways of adding bells and whistles

종소리나 휘파람 소리를 추가하는

to an existing model,

단순한 도구가 아닌

but to dream up entirely new ways

완전히 새로운 방식으로

for people to interact with

사람들이 음악과 소통하고

and experience music.

음악을 느낄 수 있게 말이죠.
