For over a decade,

I have studied young people that have been pushed out of school,

I follow these young people for years at a time,

he's 14 years old

and it's a school day.

Other people, when they see this picture,

thugs, delinquents --

criminals.

But I see it different.

I see these young people through a perspective

私にとっては 彼らが 教育システムにいずれ貢献する

that looks at the assets that they bring to the education system.

かけがえのない人材に見えます

So will you join me in changing the way we label young people

from "at-risk" to "at-promise?"

How do I know that these young people

どうして私に

have the potential and the promise to change?

彼らが変われる見込みがあると わかるのかって？

I know this because I am one of them.

私自身がそうだったからです

You see, I grew up in dire poverty in the inner city,

without a father --

he abandoned me before I was even born.

We were on welfare,

sometimes homeless,

many times hungry.

By the time I was 15 years old,

I had been incarcerated in juvy three times for three felonies.

My best friend had already been killed.

And soon after,

while I'm standing next to my uncle,

he gets shot.

And as I'm waiting for the ambulance to arrive

for over an hour ...

he bleeds to death on the street.

I had lost faith and hope in the world,

and I had given up on the system because the system had failed me.

I had nothing to offer

私には 何も貢献できる事もなく

and no one had anything to offer me.

誰も何の 手も差し伸べてくれませんでした

I was fatalistic.

こんな運命なのだと諦め

I didn't even think I could make it to my 18th birthday.

自分が18才の誕生日を 迎える事もないと思っていました

The reason I'm here today

今日ここでお話しできているのは

is because a teacher that cared reached out

ある教師が昔 そんな私に手を差し伸べ

and managed to tap into my soul.

心を開いてくれたからです

This teacher,

この教師は

Ms. Russ ...

ラス先生と言い

she was the kind of teacher that was always in your business.

いつも人の事に 鼻を突っ込んで来るタイプの先生でした

(Laughter)

She was the kind of teacher that was like,

こんな感じです

"Victor, I'm here for you whenever you're ready."

「ヴィクター 私ならここにいるからね 待ってるわよ〜」

(Laughter)

I wasn't ready.

私には心の準備が できていませんでした

But she understood one basic principle about young people like me.

でも先生は私のような 若者がわかっていたんです

We're like oysters.

まるで固く殻を閉じた牡蠣です

We're only going to open up when we're ready,

心の準備ができた時しか開かない

and if you're not there when we're ready,

開いた時に傍に誰もいなければ

we're going to clam back up.

また閉じてしまうんです

Ms. Russ was there for me.

先生は私の傍にいてくれました

She was culturally relevant,

先生は私と同じ文化で育ち

she respected my community, my people, my family.

I told her a story about my Uncle Ruben.

He would take me to work with him because I was broke,

and he knew I needed some money.

He collected glass bottles for a living.

Four in the morning on a school day,

we'd throw the glass bottles in the back of his van,

and the bottles would break.

And my hands and arms would start to bleed

and my tennis shoes and pants would get all bloody.

And I was terrified and in pain, and I would stop working.

And my uncle, he would look me in the eyes and he would say to me,

we're trying to make something out of nothing."

Ms. Russ listened to my story,

welcomed it into the classroom and said,

"Victor, this is your power.

This is your potential.

あなたの能力なの

Your family, your culture, your community have taught you a hard-work ethic

あなたの家族、文化 コミュニティーが勤勉さを教えてくれたの

and you will use it to empower yourself in the academic world

今度はそれを学業で活かすのよ そうしたら

so you can come back and empower your community."

あなたのコミュニティーに 戻って 皆を力づけられるでしょう」

With Ms. Russ's help,

先生の助力によって

I ended up returning to school.

私は学校に戻りました

I even finished my credits on time

単位も 期間内に取ることが出来て

and graduated with my class.

クラスメートたちと 一緒に卒業しました

(Applause)

But Ms. Russ said to me right before graduation,

でもラス先生は 卒業の直前に言ったんです

"Victor, I'm so proud of you.

「ヴィクター あなたをとても誇りに思うわ〜

I knew you could do it.

あなたなら やれると思っていたわよ〜

Now it's time to go to college."

さあ 今度は大学に行くのよ〜」

(Laughter)

College, me?

ええっ大学？俺が？

Man, what is this teacher smoking thinking I'm going to college?

おい この先生 俺が大学に行くだなんて 何考えちゃってんだよ？

I applied with the mentors and support she provided,

先生が用意したメンター達や サポートに頼って 願書を提出しました

got a letter of acceptance,

すると合格通知が来たのですが

and one of the paragraphs read,

その一節にこう書いてありました

"You've been admitted under probationary status."

「補欠合格 (probation) です」

I said, "Probation? I'm already on probation,

保護観察 (probation)？ もう俺は保護観察処分中なんだけど

that don't matter?"

それが何か？

(Laughter)

（笑）

It was academic probation, not criminal probation.

完全に勘違いしてしまってたんです

But what do teachers like Ms. Russ do to succeed with young people

ラス先生のような教師たちは どうやってこんな若者たちと

like the ones I study?

協力するのでしょう？

I propose three strategies.

３つの戦略を提案します

The first:

まず１つめ

let's get rid of our deficit perspective in education.

間違った引き算だらけのこんな目線を 教育から無くすんです

"These people come from a culture of violence,

「この子たちは 暴力的な文化から来た

a culture of poverty.

貧困の文化だ

These people are at-risk; these people are truant.

彼らは問題児で 怠け者の集団だ

These people are empty containers for us to fill with knowledge.

いわば知識で満たすことのできる 空っぽな容れ物で

They have the problems,

彼らは問題を抱えていて

we have the solutions."

解決法を知るのは我々なんだ」

Number two.

２つ目です

Let's value the stories that young people bring to the schoolhouse.

若者たちの話を学校で共有し 尊重しましょう

Their stories of overcoming insurmountable odds are so powerful.

彼らの忍耐と克服の物語は とてもパワフルです

And I know you know some of these stories.

皆さんの中にもこうした物語があったり 聞いたことがある人がいますね

These very same stories and experiences

こうした体験や物語には 正に

already have grit, character and resilience in them.

すでにグリット（やり抜く気骨）や人格 逆境に立ち向かう精神があります

So let's help young people refine those stories.

だから 若者たちが自らの物語を 精錬する手助けをしましょう

Let's help them be proud of who they are,

彼らが自分自身を 誇りに思えるように—

because our education system welcomes their families, their cultures,

それは 私たちの教育システムは 彼らの家族や文化

their communities

コミュニティー そして

and the skill set they've learned to survive.

彼らが生きる為に学んだ スキルも受容するからです

And of course the third strategy being the most important:

resources.

We have to provide adequate resources to young people.

Grit alone isn't going to cut it.

You can sit there and tell me all you want,

"Hey man, pick yourself up by the bootstraps."

But if I was born without any straps on my boots --

How am I supposed to pick myself up?

Job training,

mentoring,

メンタリング

counseling ...

カウンセリング

Teaching young people to learn from their mistakes

若者たちに 失敗から学ぶことを教えるのです

instead of criminalizing them,

失敗したら彼らを罰し

and dragging them out of their classrooms like animals.

How about this?

こうするのはどうでしょう？

I propose that we implement restorative justice in every high school in America.

So we went out to test these ideas in the community of Watts in LA

このアイデアを試す為に LAのワッツ地区にあるコミュニティーの

with 40 young people that had been pushed out of school.

学校を退学した40人の 若者たちに会いました

William was one of them.

ウィリアムはその中の１人でした

William was the kind of kid that had been given every label.

あらゆるレッテルを 貼られたような子で

He had dropped out, he was a gang member,

a criminal.

And when we met him he was very resistant.

But I remember what Ms. Russ used to say.

"Hey, I'm here for you whenever you're ready."

(Laughter)

So over time --

over time he began to open up.

And I remember the day that he made the switch.

We were in a large group

and a young lady in our program was crying

because she told us her powerful story

of her dad being killed

and then his body being shown in the newspaper the next day.

And as she's crying, I don't know what to do,

so I give her her space,

and William had enough.

我慢を切らしたウィリアムが突然

He slammed his hands on the desk and he said,

"Hey, everybody! Group hug! Group hug!"

「おいみんな！ハグしようぜ！ グループハグだ！」

(Applause)

This young lady's tears and pain turned into joy and laughter

彼女の涙と痛みは 喜びと笑い声に変わりました

knowing that her community had her back,

このコミュニティーが彼女を 支えているとわかったからです

and William had now learned that he did have a purpose in life:

ウィリアムはそうして 人生の目的を見つけました

to help to heal the souls of people in his own community.

彼のコミュニティーの 傷ついた人々を癒すことです

He told us his story.

彼は自分自身の物語を話し

We refined his story

私たちは彼の話を精錬しました

to go from being the story of a victim to being the story of a survivor

単なる被害者としての物語から

逆境を乗り越えた サバイバーとしての物語へと

that has overcome adversity.

We placed high value on it.

その体験を強調しました

William went on to finish high school,

その後ウィリアムは高校を卒業し

get his security guard certificate to become a security guard,

資格試験に合格し 警備員になり

and is now working at a local school district.

今 地域の校区で 活躍しています

(Applause)

Ms. Russ's mantra --

her mantra was always,

こう言っていました

"when you teach to the heart, the mind will follow."

The great writer Khalil Gibran says,

偉大な作家 カリール・ジブラーンは こう言いました

"Out of suffering have emerged the greatest souls.

「最も偉大な魂は苦悩から現れる

The massive characters are seared with scars."

揺るぎない人格は 傷跡を持っているものだ」

I believe that in this education revolution that we're talking about

私が信じているのは この教育改革で

we need to invite the souls of the young people that we work with,

若者たちを巻き込み

and once they're able to refine --

彼らがすでに持っていた

identify their grit, resilience and character

やり抜く力、逆境への忍耐力

that they've already developed --

そして人格が精錬された時

their academic performance will improve.

学業成績も向上するはずだ ということです

Let's believe in young people.

若者たちを信じましょう

Let's provide them the right kinds of resources.

そして 正しいリソースを 提供しましょう

I'll tell you what my teacher did for me.

先生が私にしてくれたのは これです

She believed in me so much

先生がとことん 私を信じ抜いてくれたから

that she tricked me into believing in myself.

私も思わず自分を 信じられるようになったのです
