For over a decade,

I have studied young people that have been pushed out of school,

I follow these young people for years at a time,

to try to understand what some of us call the "school-to-prison pipeline."

When you look at a picture like this,

of young people who are in my study ...

you might see trouble.

I mean one of the boys has a bottle of liquor in his hand,

한 명은 손에 술병을 들고 있는데

그 아이는 14살에

he's 14 years old

and it's a school day.

이 날은 학교에 가는 날이었습니다.

Other people, when they see this picture,

어떤 사람들은 이 사진을 보고

might see gangs,

갱단이나

폭력배, 비행 청소년

thugs, delinquents --

혹은 범죄자로 볼지도 모르죠.

criminals.

But I see it different.

하지만 저는 다른 게 보입니다.

저는 이 아이들을

I see these young people through a perspective

교육 체계에 불러올 큰 자산의 관점으로 바라봅니다.

that looks at the assets that they bring to the education system.

So will you join me in changing the way we label young people

여러분께서도 저와 함께 이 아이들을 "위험에 처한" 아이들이 아니라

from "at-risk" to "at-promise?"

"장래가 촉망된" 아이들로 바꾸는데 함께 해주시겠습니까?

How do I know that these young people

제가 이 아이들에게 잠재력이 있고

have the potential and the promise to change?

바뀔 수 있다고 어떻게 아냐고요?

제가 바로 그런 사람이었기 때문입니다.

I know this because I am one of them.

You see, I grew up in dire poverty in the inner city,

저 또한 도시 빈민가에서 아버지도 없이

가난에 찌든 채 자랐습니다.

without a father --

he abandoned me before I was even born.

아버지는 제가 태어나기도 전에 저를 버리고 갔습니다.

We were on welfare,

사회복지 지원으로 살았고

가끔은 노숙도 했고

sometimes homeless,

many times hungry.

굶주린 적도 많았습니다.

By the time I was 15 years old,

제가 15살이 될 때까지

세 번의 범죄로 감옥에 세 번 갔습니다.

I had been incarcerated in juvy three times for three felonies.

My best friend had already been killed.

제 가장 친한 친구는 이미 이 세상 사람이 아니었고요.

And soon after,

그리고 얼마 지나지 않아

while I'm standing next to my uncle,

제가 삼촌과 같이 있을 때

he gets shot.

삼촌이 총에 맞으셨고

And as I'm waiting for the ambulance to arrive

응급차가 도착할 때까지

한 시간 넘게 기다리는 동안

for over an hour ...

삼촌은 길 위에서 출혈로 돌아가셨습니다.

he bleeds to death on the street.

I had lost faith and hope in the world,

저는 세상에 대한 믿음과 희망의 끈을 놓아버렸고

and I had given up on the system because the system had failed me.

국가도 제게 희망을 주지 못했기에 그마저도 포기했습니다.

I had nothing to offer

제가 남에게 베풀 수 있는 것도 없었고

and no one had anything to offer me.

제게 뭐 하나라도 베푸는 이도 없었습니다.

저는 절망에 빠졌고

I was fatalistic.

I didn't even think I could make it to my 18th birthday.

제가 18번 째 생일을 맞지 못할 거라고 생각했죠.

The reason I'm here today

제가 이 자리까지 올 수 있었던 것은

is because a teacher that cared reached out

한 선생님 덕분인데 그분은 저를 신경써주시고

and managed to tap into my soul.

다가와서 제 영혼을 열어 주셨습니다.

이 선생님은

This teacher,

Ms. Russ ...

러스 선생님이신데요.

she was the kind of teacher that was always in your business.

무지막지하게 오지랖이 넓은 선생님이셨습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

선생님은 항상 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.

She was the kind of teacher that was like,

"Victor, I'm here for you whenever you're ready."

"빅터야, 내가 여기 있으니 필요하면 언제든지 부르렴."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I wasn't ready.

저는 준비가 되지 않았어요.

But she understood one basic principle about young people like me.

하지만 선생님께서는 저 같은 아이들의 가장 기본적인 특성을 알고 계셨습니다.

We're like oysters.

저 같은 애들은 굴 같습니다.

We're only going to open up when we're ready,

자신이 준비되어야만 마음을 열고

and if you're not there when we're ready,

준비가 되었음에도 옆에 누군가가 없다면

we're going to clam back up.

다시 마음을 닫아버립니다.

Ms. Russ was there for me.

러스 선생님은 제 곁에 계셨습니다.

선생님은 문화적으로도 관련이 있었고

She was culturally relevant,

제 주변 환경, 사람들과 가족들을 존중해줬습니다.

she respected my community, my people, my family.

I told her a story about my Uncle Ruben.

선생님께 루벤 삼촌에 대해 말씀드렸습니다.

He would take me to work with him because I was broke,

삼촌은 제가 돈이 필요할 때

and he knew I needed some money.

일터로 저를 데려가곤 하셨습니다.

He collected glass bottles for a living.

삼촌은 유리병을 모아서 생계를 유지하셨어요.

Four in the morning on a school day,

학교가는 날 새벽 4시에 일어나서

we'd throw the glass bottles in the back of his van,

삼촌의 차 뒤에 유리병을 던져 넣었는데

and the bottles would break.

당연히 병이 부서졌죠.

And my hands and arms would start to bleed

제 손과 팔은 피가 나기 시작하고

and my tennis shoes and pants would get all bloody.

신발과 바지도 피범벅이 됐습니다.

And I was terrified and in pain, and I would stop working.

저는 겁이나고 아파서 일하는 것을 멈췄습니다.

And my uncle, he would look me in the eyes and he would say to me,

그랬더니 삼촌께서는 제 눈을 보시며 말씀하셨습니다.

"Mijo,

"Mijo,

estamos buscando vida."

estamos buscando vida."

"우리는 더 나은 삶을 찾고 있는 거란다.

"We're searching for a better life,

we're trying to make something out of nothing."

무에서 유를 창조하는 것이지."

Ms. Russ listened to my story,

러스 선생님께선 제 이야기를 듣고는

welcomed it into the classroom and said,

교실로 돌아와 말씀하셨습니다.

"Victor, this is your power.

"빅터야, 이게 네가 가진 힘이야.

This is your potential.

너의 잠재력이란다.

Your family, your culture, your community have taught you a hard-work ethic

너희 가족, 문화, 공동체가 성실함의 윤리에 대해 가르쳐주었고

너는 그것을 공부하는 데에 사용하고

and you will use it to empower yourself in the academic world

so you can come back and empower your community."

나아가서 너희 공동체에 힘을 불어넣어 주렴."

With Ms. Russ's help,

러스 선생님의 도움 덕분에

I ended up returning to school.

저는 학교로 돌아갈 수 있었고

I even finished my credits on time

모든 수업을 제 때에 마쳤고

and graduated with my class.

제 친구들과 졸업할 수 있었습니다.

But Ms. Russ said to me right before graduation,

그런데 러스 선생님께서 제 졸업식 직전에 이렇게 말씀하셨어요.

"Victor, I'm so proud of you.

"빅터야, 나는 네가 자랑스럽단다.

I knew you could do it.

네가 해낼 줄 알고 있었어.

Now it's time to go to college."

이제 대학교 가야지."

(Laughter)

College, me?

제가 대학교엘 간다고요?

Man, what is this teacher smoking thinking I'm going to college?

이 선생님은 도대체 뭔 생각을 하는 거예요?

I applied with the mentors and support she provided,

저는 선생님께서 도와주신 덕분에

got a letter of acceptance,

대학교에 입학할 수 있었습니다.

그리고 입학허가서에 이렇게 쓰여 있었죠.

and one of the paragraphs read,

"You've been admitted under probationary status."

"귀하는 보호 관찰 상태로 입학 허가되었습니다."

I said, "Probation? I'm already on probation,

그래서 저는 이렇게 말했죠. "보호 관찰? 난 이미 보호관찰 중인데?

that don't matter?"

무슨 상관이야."

(웃음)

(Laughter)

It was academic probation, not criminal probation.

그건 학업이 부족하다는 뜻이었지 범죄적 보호 관찰이 아니었습니다.

But what do teachers like Ms. Russ do to succeed with young people

그런데 제가 연구 중인 아이들 같은 애들을

성공하게 만들려고 러스 선생님은 무엇을 한 것일까요?

like the ones I study?

전 세 가지 전략을 제안합니다.

I propose three strategies.

The first:

첫 번째는

let's get rid of our deficit perspective in education.

교육에 있어서 결손에 대한 우리의 관점을 없애는 것입니다.

"These people come from a culture of violence,

"이 사람들은 폭력적이고

빈곤의 문화에 속해 있어.

a culture of poverty.

These people are at-risk; these people are truant.

이 사람들은 위험에 처해있어 얘들은 게을러.

These people are empty containers for us to fill with knowledge.

얘들을 가르치는 건 밑 빠진 독에 물 붓는 거야.

이 아이들은 문제가 있고

They have the problems,

we have the solutions."

우리가 해결해야만 해."

Number two.

두 번째입니다.

Let's value the stories that young people bring to the schoolhouse.

학생들이 학교로 가져오는 이야기들을 가치있게 여깁시다.

Their stories of overcoming insurmountable odds are so powerful.

그들이 역경을 헤쳐나가는 이야기에는 굉장한 힘이 있습니다.

여러분도 이런 이야기를 들어본 적이 분명히 있을 거라고 저는 생각합니다.

And I know you know some of these stories.

These very same stories and experiences

이 비슷한 이야기와 경험은 이미 끈기와

인격, 그리고 회복력이 있습니다.

already have grit, character and resilience in them.

So let's help young people refine those stories.

이제 아이들이 이런 이야기를 가꿔나갈 수 있게 도와줍시다.

Let's help them be proud of who they are,

본인이 자랑스럽다고 느끼도록 도와주자고요.

because our education system welcomes their families, their cultures,

우리 교육 체계가 아이들의 가족

문화, 공동체, 그리고

their communities

살면서 배운 기술들을 기꺼이 받아들이니까요.

and the skill set they've learned to survive.

And of course the third strategy being the most important:

그리고 마지막으로 가장 중요한 것은 바로

resources.

자원입니다.

우리는 아이들에게 충분히 지원해주어야만 합니다.

We have to provide adequate resources to young people.

끈기만으로는 이뤄낼 수 없어요.

Grit alone isn't going to cut it.

이런 조언을 할 수 있어요.

You can sit there and tell me all you want,

"Hey man, pick yourself up by the bootstraps."

"이봐, 신발끈 묶고 잘 좀 해봐" (역주: '자수성가하다'는 뜻)

But if I was born without any straps on my boots --

그런데 신발에 그 끈조차 없다면

(Laughter)

(웃음)

How am I supposed to pick myself up?

어떻게 그 끈을 묶고 일어나겠어요?

Job training,

직업 교육

mentoring,

멘토링

상담

counseling ...

Teaching young people to learn from their mistakes

아이들을 범죄자 취급하고

instead of criminalizing them,

교실 바깥으로 개처럼 끌어내는 것 말고

and dragging them out of their classrooms like animals.

아이들이 실수를 통해 배우게 하는 것

How about this?

이런 건 어떻습니까?

I propose that we implement restorative justice in every high school in America.

저는 미국 모든 고등학교에 회복적 정의를 시행할 것을 제안합니다.

(Applause)

So we went out to test these ideas in the community of Watts in LA

그래서 저희는 LA 와츠(Watts)에서 학교 밖으로 쫓겨난 40명의 아이들에게

이 아이디어를 시험해보기로 했습니다.

with 40 young people that had been pushed out of school.

William was one of them.

윌리엄도 그 중의 하나였습니다.

William was the kind of kid that had been given every label.

윌리엄에게는 수많은 꼬리표가 붙어다녔습니다.

He had dropped out, he was a gang member,

학교에서 퇴학당했고, 조직원에다가

범죄자였으니까요.

a criminal.

And when we met him he was very resistant.

얘를 처음 만났을 때 저희를 많이 거부했습니다.

But I remember what Ms. Russ used to say.

하지만 러스 선생님께서 하신 말씀이 기억났습니다.

"Hey, I'm here for you whenever you're ready."

"얘야, 준비 되면 말하렴."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

오랜 시간이 지나서

So over time --

over time he began to open up.

그제서야 마음을 열기 시작했습니다.

And I remember the day that he made the switch.

전 윌리엄이 바뀐 날을 기억합니다.

We were in a large group

다른 많은 아이들과 모여 있을 때였는데

and a young lady in our program was crying

저희 프로그램의 한 여자아이가 울고 있었습니다.

because she told us her powerful story

저희에게 강렬한 이야기를 해주었는데

of her dad being killed

아버지께서 살해 당해서

and then his body being shown in the newspaper the next day.

다음날 신문에 시체가 나왔다는 것이었죠.

And as she's crying, I don't know what to do,

그 아이는 울고 있었고, 저는 어쩔 줄 몰라하고 있었습니다.

so I give her her space,

그래서 약간의 시간을 주기로 했는데

and William had enough.

윌리엄은 이를 참지 못했습니다.

He slammed his hands on the desk and he said,

그는 손으로 책상을 세게 내려치고 외쳤습니다.

"Hey, everybody! Group hug! Group hug!"

"자, 모여서 안아주자. 다 안아줘."

자신을 도와주는 사람이 있다는 것을 알자

This young lady's tears and pain turned into joy and laughter

knowing that her community had her back,

and William had now learned that he did have a purpose in life:

윌리엄은 삶의 목표를 배웠습니다.

to help to heal the souls of people in his own community.

자기 주변 사람들의 마음을 치유하는 것을 도와주는 일이었죠.

He told us his story.

윌리엄이 자신에 대해 이야기해줬고

We refined his story

저희는 그것을 피해자의 이야기에서

역경을 이겨낸 생존자의 이야기로

to go from being the story of a victim to being the story of a survivor

that has overcome adversity.

바꾸었습니다.

We placed high value on it.

저희는 이를 높이 삽니다.

William went on to finish high school,

윌리엄은 고등학교로 돌아가서 무사히 마쳤고

get his security guard certificate to become a security guard,

경호원 자격증을 따서 지금은

지역 학교에서 경호원으로 일하고 있습니다.

and is now working at a local school district.

Ms. Russ's mantra --

러스 선생님의 주문은

her mantra was always,

다음과 같았습니다.

"when you teach to the heart, the mind will follow."

"마음에다 가르치면 머리는 따라오게 되어 있다."

The great writer Khalil Gibran says,

위대한 작가 칼릴 지브란은 이렇게 말했습니다.

"Out of suffering have emerged the greatest souls.

"위대한 영혼은 고통으로부터 나온다.

The massive characters are seared with scars."

"담대한 기질은 상처로 인해 만들어진다."

지금 말하고 있는 이 교육 혁명에서

I believe that in this education revolution that we're talking about

we need to invite the souls of the young people that we work with,

저는 우리가 아이들의 마음을 움직여야 한다고 생각합니다.

and once they're able to refine --

그렇게 다듬어 주고

identify their grit, resilience and character

자신들이 이미 만들어 놓은

끈기와 회복 탄력성, 기질을 깨닫는다면

that they've already developed --

학습 성취도는 오를 것입니다.

their academic performance will improve.

Let's believe in young people.

아이들을 믿읍시다.

Let's provide them the right kinds of resources.

필요한 자원을 지원해줍시다.

제 은사께서 제게 해주신 걸 말씀 드리죠.

I'll tell you what my teacher did for me.

She believed in me so much

선생님께서는 저를 굉장히 신뢰하셔서

제 자신조차 저를 믿도록 만드셨습니다.

that she tricked me into believing in myself.
