It was just an ordinary Saturday.

My dad was outside mowing the lawn,

my mom was upstairs folding laundry,

my sister was in her room doing homework

姉は自分の部屋で 宿題をしており

and I was in the basement playing video games.

私は地下で テレビゲームをしていました

And as I came upstairs to get something to drink,

飲み物を取りに １階に上がった時

I looked out the window

窓の外に目をやると

and realized that there was something that I was supposed to be doing,

自分のやるべき事が そこにあるのに気づきました

and this is what I saw.

これがその時見たものです

No, this wasn't my family's dinner on fire.

ええ これは我が家の 調理風景ではなく

This was my science project.

私の科学プロジェクトでした

Flames were pouring out,

火が吹き出し

smoke was in the air

煙が出て

and it looked like our wooden deck was about to catch fire.

ウッドデッキには 今にも火が燃え移りそうでした

I immediately started yelling.

私はすぐさま大声を出しました

My mom was freaking out,

母はパニックに陥り

my dad ran around to put out the fire

父は火を消そうと走り回り

and of course my sister started recording a Snapchat video.

勿論 姉は ビデオを回し始めました

(Laughter)

This was just the beginning of my team's science project.

これは私の科学チームの プロジェクトが始まったばかりのことでした

My team is composed of me and three other students

チームは私と３名の学生で 構成されています

who are here in the audience today.

皆 ここに来ているんですよ

We competed in FIRST LEGO League

私達はFIRST LEGOリーグに 出場しました

which is an international LEGO robotics competition for kids,

それは子どもが参加する 国際LEGOロボットの競技でした

and in addition to a robotics game,

ロボットの大会だけではなく

we also worked on a separate science project,

別の科学プロジェクトにも 取り組みました

and this was the project that we were working on.

これが そのプロジェクトです

So the idea for this project all started

その発想は全て その数か月前に始まったのです

when a few months earlier,

a couple of my teammates took a trip to Central America

何名かのチームメートが 中央アメリカを旅行し

and saw beaches littered with Styrofoam,

発泡スチロールや 発泡ポリスチレンフォームで

or expanded polystyrene foam.

散らかった海岸を 目にしたのです

And when they came back and told us about it,

彼らが戻って この事を伝えてくれた時

we really started thinking about the ways in which we see Styrofoam every day.

毎日どんな形で発泡スチロールを 目にしているか考え始めました

Get a new flat-screen TV?

新しいテレビを買ったら

You end up with a block of Styrofoam bigger than the TV itself.

テレビそのものより大きな 発泡スチロールが付いて来ます

Drink a cup of coffee?

コーヒーを飲むと

Well, those Styrofoam coffee cups are sure going to add up.

発泡スチロールのカップが出てきます

And where do all these items go after their one-time use?

１度使われた後 こういった物はどこへ行くのでしょうか？

Since there aren't any good existing solutions for used Styrofoam,

使用済み発泡スチロールの 有効な処理法は存在しないので

almost all of them end up right in the landfill,

殆どは ごみ処理施設、海、ビーチに

or the oceans and beaches,

結局は置き去りになり

taking over 500 years to degrade.

分解するのに 500年以上かかるのです

And in fact, every year, the US alone

事実 毎年アメリカだけで

produces over two billion pounds of Styrofoam,

900万トンの発泡スチロールが 生産されており

filling up a staggering 25 percent of landfills.

ごみ処理施設の25%を 占拠し続けています

So why do we have these ghost accumulations of Styrofoam waste?

では何故 発泡スチロールのゴミの山を そのままにしているのでしょう？

Why can't we just recycle them like many plastics?

多くのプラスチックのように 何故再利用出来ないのでしょう？

Well, simply put, recycled polystyrene is too expensive

単純に 再生されたポリスチレンは 高価すぎるうえ

and potentially contaminated,

汚染されている可能性があります

so there is very little market demand for Styrofoam that has to be recycled.

従って再生発泡スチロールの 需要はほんのわずかなのです

And as a result, Styrofoam is considered a nonrenewable material,

その結果 発泡スチロールは 再生不能な素材と見なされています

because it is neither feasible nor viable to recycle polystyrene.

ポリスチレンの再生は実行も出来ないし 成功しそうにないからです

And in fact, many cities across the US

事実 アメリカの多くの都市では

have even passed ordinances

that simply ban the production of many products containing polystyrene,

which includes disposable utensils,

packing peanuts, takeout containers

and even plastic beach toys,

And now France has become the first country

to completely ban all plastic utensils,

cups and plates.

But what if we could keep using Styrofoam

and keep benefiting from its cheap, lightweight, insulating

and excellent packing ability,

while not having to suffer from the repercussions

of having to dispose of it?

What if we could turn it into something else that's actually useful?

それを何か他の役立つものに 変える事が出来たらどうでしょう？

What if we could make the impossible possible?

不可能を可能に変えられるなら どうでしょう？

My team hypothesized that we could use the carbon that's already in Styrofoam

我がチームは活性炭を作り出す為に 発泡スチロールの中に既に存在する炭素が

to create activated carbon,

使えないかと仮定してみました

which is used in almost every water filter today.

それは今日殆どどの浄水器にも 使われている物です

And activated carbon works by using very small micropores

活性炭は水や空気から 汚染物質を除去する為に

to filter out contaminants from water or even air.

非常に小さな微小孔が 作用しています

So we started out by doing a variety of heating tests,

私達は様々な加熱実験を 行う事から始めました

and unfortunately, we had many failures.

残念ながら 何度も失敗を重ねました

Literally, nothing worked.

本当に 何一つ うまくいきませんでした

Besides my dad's grill catching on fire,

その上 父のグリルから火が上がり

most of our samples vaporized into nothing,

サンプルの殆どが 蒸発して消えたり

or exploded inside expensive furnaces,

高価な暖炉の中で爆発して

leaving a horribly sticky mess.

おぞましいベトベトな 残骸になったりしました

In fact, we were so saddened by our failures that we almost gave up.

実際 失敗に落ち込んで もう諦めかけていました

So why did we keep trying

大人が全員無理だと言った時

when all the adults said it was impossible?

私達は何故 頑張り続けたのでしょう？

Well, maybe it's because we're kids. We don't know any better.

おそらくそれは自分達が子どもで 頑張るしかなかったからです

But the truth is, we kept trying because we thought it was still possible.

しかし実はそれがまだ不可能ではないと 思っていたからなのです

We knew that if we were successful,

成功したら 環境に貢献でき

we would be helping the environment and making the world a better place.

世界をより良い場所にする事が 出来ると分かっていたのです

So we kept trying

だから私達は挑戦し続けました

and failing

そして失敗し

and trying

また挑戦し

and failing.

そして失敗しました

We were so ready to give up.

諦める覚悟は出来ていました

But then it happened.

でもその時 やったのです

With the right temperatures, times and chemicals,

適切な温度、時間、化学物質で

we finally got that successful test result

私達は遂に 発泡スチロールのゴミから

showing us that we had created activated carbon from Styrofoam waste.

活性炭を作り出した事を示す 確かな実験結果を得たのです

And at that moment, the thing that had been impossible

その瞬間 不可能だったものが

all of a sudden wasn't.

突然可能になりました

It showed us that although we had many failures at the beginning,

それは 始めは沢山失敗したけれど

we were able to persevere through them to get the test results that we wanted.

自分達が望んだ実験結果を得る為に 耐えてやり抜く事が出来た証でした

And moreover, not only were we able to create activated carbon

その上 浄水する為の活性炭を

for purifying water,

作り出せただけでなく

but we were also able to reduce Styrofoam waste,

発泡スチロールごみを 減らす事もでき

solving two global problems with just one solution.

わずか１つの方法で ２つの地球規模の問題を解決出来ました

So from then on, we were inspired to take our project further,

それからプロジェクトを さらに進める意欲が高まり

performing more tests to make it more effective

その方法の効果を高める実験や

and testing it in real world situations.

実際の状況に応じた テストを行って来ました

We then proceeded to receive funding

その後 資金を集め始めました

from the NSTA's eCYBERMISSION STEM-in-Action program

NSTAのeCYBERMISSION STEM-in-Action プログラム―

sponsored by the US Army,

米陸軍が主催するものです

as well as FIRST Global Innovation Awards

同様にXPRIZE主催のFIRST で Global Innovation賞を受けました

sponsored by XPRIZE.

And we were also honored

又Google科学フェアで

with the Scientific American Innovator Award

アメリカ科学イノベーション賞も

from Google Science Fair.

受賞しました

And using these funds, we plan to file a full patent on our process

これらの基金で特許を取り 自分達のプロジェクトに

and to continue to work on our project.

取り組み続けようと計画しています

So yes, although we started with catching my dad's grill on fire

そう 父のグリルを 火だるまにしたことから始めて

and failing so many times that we almost quit,

何度も失敗して 殆ど諦めかけていたけれど

it was well worth it when we look back at it now.

今振り返れば やる価値は十分にありました

We took a problem that many people said was impossible

多くの人達が不可能だと言った 問題に取り組み

and we made it possible,

それを可能にし

and we persevered when it looked like nothing that we did would work.

何をやってもうまく行かなかった時も 頑張ってやり抜いたのです

We learned that you can't have success

少しばかりの 又は

without a little,

沢山の失敗なしには

or a lot, of failure.

成功は出来ないのだと学びました

So in the future, don't be afraid if your grill goes up in flames,

だから将来 もしグリルから 火が上がっても恐れないで下さい

because you never know when your idea might just catch fire.

あなたの発想にも 火がつくかも知れないのだから
